As everyone knows, Poke Balls are used for catching and containing wild Pokemon. Shortly after receiving their starter in each mainline Pokemon game, players are walked through a tutorial on how to catch them, and are usually given a starting amount of Poke Balls from their rival or professor.

For those wanting to complete the Pokedex, it’s recommended to unlock the Poke Balls with higher catch rates as soon as possible. Using the right Poke Ball depending on the wild Pokemon’s level or the player’s surroundings will make it easier to catch them.

The more gym badges the player character has, the more Poke Balls that become available at the Poke Centers. Here’s how to get them all.

At the start of Scarlet & Violet, players will only be able to purchase the standard Poke Ball from the store counter at Pokemon Centers. These cost 200 PokeDollars a piece.

They just won’t be available to buy until a set amount of gym badges are earned. Additionally, various Poke Balls can be earned from reaching Pokedex Completion milestones.

Nest Ball. A ball that’s ideal for catching weaker Pokemon in the wild (ex: levels 1-22).

Heal Ball. A ball with the same catch rate as a regular Poke Ball.

Status conditions (such as Poison) will also be removed. 300.

Repeat Ball. A ball that has a higher chance of catching a Pokemon that has already been caught.

Timer Ball. A ball that has a higher catch rate the longer the battle goes on.

After 40 turns, the Timer Ball caps out with a catch rate of 4x. These are recommended for catching legendary Pokemon.

Quick Ball. A ball that has a 5x catch rate when used at the start of battle.

Net Ball. A ball that has a high catch rate when used on a Bug or Water-type Pokemon.

Luxury Ball. A ball with the same catch rate as a regular Poke Ball.

It’s perfect to use when trying to catch Pokemon that evolve with Friendship, such as Eevee or Riolu. 3000.

Dive Ball. A ball that has a higher catch rate when used on a Pokemon in water.

Dusk Ball. A ball that has a 3.5x catch rate when catching Pokemon in dark caves or at night.

Beast Ball. A special type of Poke Ball that has a 5x catch rate against Ultra Beasts, but a 0.1 catch rate on regular Pokemon.

Dream Ball. A ball that has a 4x catch rate on a sleeping Pokemon only.

Lure Ball. A ball that’s ideal for catching Pokemon through fishing.

Heavy Ball. A ball that’s best used when catching heavier Pokemon.

Friend Ball. Pokemon caught in a Friend Ball will have a Friendship Level of 200.

Level Ball. The ball’s catch rate will be influenced by how much higher the trainer’s level is compared to the wild Pokemon.

Fast Ball. A ball that has a 4x catch rate when used on a Pokemon with a Speed of 100 or higher.

Love Ball. A Love Ball is useful when trying to catch a Pokemon of the opposite gender of the trainer’s Pokemon.

Moon Ball. A special type of ball that has a higher catch rate when used on Pokemon that evolve with a Moon Stone (ex: Jigglypuff).

If a player’s Pokemon is able to inflict a status ailment such as Paralysis or Sleep, it will increase the chances of catching the wild Pokemon. These factors will stack on the effects of the Poke Ball using to catch the wild Pokemon.

To prevent this from happening, have a Pokemon with a higher Speed than the opponent, and use Taunt. This is a Dark-type move that will prevent the opponent from using non-damaging moves.

The Net Ball has a higher capture rate when used to catch Water-type or Bug-type Pokémon. Its effectiveness is particularly pronounced when encountering Pokémon of these types, making it a strategic choice for trainers exploring aquatic environments or bug-infested areas.

Its capture rate is significantly higher in these aquatic environments. The Luxury Ball doesn’t affect the capture rate but provides a unique benefit.

It’s a choice for those who want to build strong bonds with their newly caught Pokémon. The Quick Ball offers a higher capture rate when used early in a battle, particularly during the first turn.

The Heal Ball doesn’t affect the capture rate but serves a healing function. When a Pokémon is caught with a Heal Ball, it is immediately healed to total health, promoting the well-being of the newly captured creature and making it ready for battle or friendship-building activities.

It provides a significantly higher capture rate when used under these conditions, making it an excellent choice for trainers exploring low-light environments or attempting captures during nighttime encounters. The Cherish Ball is typically reserved for distributing special event Pokémon.

Capturing Pokémon is the most important thing in the Pokémon Games. Without it you wouldn’t be able to obtain any Pokémon.

The calculation runs through various different variables before finally determining whether or not the Pokémon is captured. The first element involved is the Pokémon’s Hit Points.

A good thing to use here is a move like False Swipe which will always leave a Pokémon with 1 HP. CatchChance = floor((3 * MaxHP – 2 * CurrentHP) * 4096 + 0.5).

Each species and form has got a specific rate, which can be seen in the Pokédex throughout the site. The Heavy Ball effect is also factored in here, adding a value to thecatch rate straight out if the Heavy Ball is used.

After that calculation is done, then the Poké Ball you used is factored in. Each Poké Ball has got a special factor that alters the catch rate in certain circumstances, or just as standard.

CatchChance = PokeBallModifier * CatchChance. There is another factor involved.

In Pokémon Scarlet & Violet, there’s a new element factored in at this part, a badge penalty. For each Gym Badge you are missing, you have a reduction in catch rate, so if you have no badges, this is factored in to a power of 8.

BadgePenalty = 0.8BadgesMissing * 4096 CatchRate = (BadgePenalty * CatchRate) / (3* Max HP). Following this, there’s a small bonus if the wild Pokémon is Level 13 or under.

If the target Pokémon’s level is 14 or higher, this part is ignored. CatchRate = floor(((36-2* TargetLevel) * CatchRate)/10).

Status Conditions have always been an element in the game that can help you turn the tide of battle. However, they also factor in to the capture calculations.

CatchRate = Status * CatchRate.

This is used for bonuses for things in Scarlet & Violet such as Backstrikes and Meal Powers. Backstrikes have an increase of *2 which activates if you start a battle by starting the battle with the Pokémon unaware.

These stack. This gives us the final catch rate which is capped at 1044480.

Critical Capture. A totally new mechanic of capture is the Critical Capture.

Critical Capture will be noticed when you throw the Pokéball. It’ll make a metal noise, and pause in mid-air briefly.

This cuts three of the four random calculations out of the overal capture mechanic making it more likely to capture the Pokémon. However, it can still fail.

The calculation is done by a simple factor depending upon the amount of Pokémon species you have captured. It will run this calculation based upon the capture value calculated above and will then have another random number based upon the Pokémon you have captured.

This value is then rounded down and then is determined if it will activate through a simple randomised number. If the number is less than the critical catch rate, then it will be a critical catch and it will only run a shake check once.

It runs four of these checks and if all four are successful, then the Pokémon is captured. The Let’s Go games run things a bit differently to the previous games.

Catch rate is a completely different situation to the previous and subsequent Pokémon games with the Pokémon’s Catch Rate being modified through a variety of means. 65535 / (255/ModifiedCatchRate)1/5.33.

If the number is less, then it’s success. 4 shakes mean the capture is successful.

There’s another method that helps the catch rate. As you increase your catches of the same species of Pokémon, the capture rate will increase.

4√(10000/((1000-TotalCaught)/100)*CP+1). The final Species Catch Rate shown is showcased by the Ring.

NumberOfPlayers * (a*(√((Player1Ball + Player2Ball)/NumberofPlayers)*NewbieModifier)3). Newbie Modifier is 1 as standard but 1.5 if you haven’t reached Viridian Forest.
