Active suicidal ideation includes making plans to end your life. If you feel actively suicidal or have a plan, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255), or text “MHA” to 741-741 to talk to a trained counselor from the Crisis Text Line.

In the novel, the main character completes suicide to escape the pressures and expectations she felt. During our class discussion, I spent a bit too much time defending her decision.

I did not know it at the time, but my compassion for this character likely stemmed from my undiagnosed depression. I feel certain that I was not the only person in the room who felt this way.

Every person’s experience is different—it’s important to understand when passive suicidal thoughts become harmful to your safety. Consider the feelings behind these thoughts.

Are you feeling: Having suicidal thoughts can be a scary experience.

If you’re reading this, there’s a part of you that wants to go on living. It’s possible to nurture that part of you, to make it stronger.

It doesn’t have to be some deep sense of purpose—it could be as simple as not wanting to miss the next season of your favorite show. (Being afraid to die could also be a starting point.) Once you start acknowledging the small reasons to keep on going, you’ll realize you have more to live for than you may have thought.

Negative thoughts usually come from our past experiences. What happened in your life that makes you believe this thought.

Then, imagine your friend telling you this more hopeful thought.

What do you need to say to convince yourself or focus on the positive.

With that said, suicidal thoughts should be taken seriously. It’s important to address these thoughts when they occur.

Put some distance between your thoughts and behaviors and talk to someone (whether it be a friend, parent, or counselor) about how you are feeling. Here is a template for how to begin the conversation:

I have struggled with (thoughts about dying). Telling you this makes me feel (nervous), but I’m telling you this because (I’m worried about myself and I don’t know what to do).

It is completely normal to feel a variety of feelings, including confusion, loneliness, and apathy, when struggling with suicidal thoughts. Just know that you are not alone: seeking help can be the first step in alleviating the feelings and pressure of these thoughts.

I did finish And I Don’t Want To Live This Life, though, and I really felt for Deborah Spungen.

Sometimes you just want everyone to STFU. And who knows if a different discipline style would have worked anyway.

Overall, I enjoyed the book as an experience. Spungen effectively wears down the reader on the subject of Nancy, makes you really feel the exhaustion and hopelessness that comes with having to manage a child like her — at a time when even those experts who understood what might be wrong had no resources to offer you.

she doesn’t apologize for needing to step out of her life every now and then. The book holds up despite still taking it as gospel that Sid Vicious killed Nancy, which I believe is no longer the received wisdom here.

At the end of the book, when she writes so sadly about the distance between her and Suzy, I had to roll my eyes. What did she expect.

Suzy probably would have put you at arm’s length sooner if she weren’t so busy constantly cleaning up after the latest tornado. And some of the “my baby, my baby” upon Nancy’s death left me cold as well, not because I can’t relate to losing a child — obviously I can’t — but because the good qualities of Nancy’s that Spungen repeats more frequently at the end, almost like a mantra, we haven’t really seen.

What did you guys think. Were you annoyed at Spungen, or at Nancy, or both.

Did the prim references to “rock concerts” give you a snicker. Did you notice that she referred to Johnny Rotten as “Johnny Lyman”.

How to Deal with Semi-Suicidal Feelings [11]

Trigger warning: This post contains a frank discussion of suicide pertaining to feeling semi-suicidal. September is Suicide Awareness Month, and in honor of that, I want to share my experience with feeling semi-suicidal.

Over the last six years, I’ve been semi-suicidal many times. Semi-suicidal is a state of being where you may experience suicidal thoughts or feelings, but don’t necessarily want to die.

When I am semi-suicidal, I truly don’t want to die. I don’t want this life to be over, I just want it to be better, but in that moment, it doesn’t feel like there’s any way for that to happen.

I’m so inherently wrong in some way that living a good life sounds ridiculous and impossible. I become so ashamed of who I am that I can’t imagine living the rest of my life this way, as this person I hate so very much.

I recommend these three things: Have you ever felt semi-suicidal.
