Ever wonder why some banks have so many routing numbers. It’s because they’ve merged and acquired smaller banks, keeping their financial infrastructure in place, and just building on top of it.

You’ll notice in the list that many states have the same ABA routing number. Those were all one bank (or at least one bank at the time they were acquired) before Wells Fargo brought them into the fold.

If you have a personal check handy, your routing number is located on the check itself. This is why most HR departments request a voided check to set up your direct deposit.

The nine-digit number highlighted in red is the number you want to use. The green number, which is often longer, is your account number.

What’s fun is that you can confirm the validity of any ABA routing number’s formatting with just the number itself. The first four digits correspond to the Federal Reserve Routing Symbol, the next four digits are the ABAB institution identifier, and the last digit is a check digit.

The 12 is for San Francisco. I won’t get into super detail about the rest but I think it’s kind of fun to see.

It will ask you for your account type and state to determine your routing number. We pulled the numbers in the above table from this tool.

The phone number is 1-800-869-3557 and they are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The ABA routing numbers are useful only for ACH transfers.

Wire transfers are “better” than an ACH transfer because they’re faster by a few days – they’re also more expensive. An ACH transfer is free, an incoming wire transfer costs $15 and an outgoing transfer costs $30.

If you’re going to send a wire transfer, confirm all the details before you send it. In almost all cases, wire transfers cannot be reversed.

I’ve heard of a lot of scams that are the result of erroneous wire transfers. There you go – pretty easy right.

Here’s a deeper look at what a cashier’s check is, how it works and how Wells Fargo’s fee compares with other major banks. A cashier’s check is a type of official check issued by banks and credit unions to a payee, typically on behalf of the bank’s customer.

As opposed to a personal check, where funds are drawn from your checking account, a cashier’s check is drawn against the bank’s account. The bank guarantees the payment, assuring the recipient that the cashier’s check won’t bounce for insufficient funds.

The bank will first check your account to ensure you have sufficient funds to cover the amount. If not, you’ll want to deposit more cash into your account.

What do you use a routing number for? [10]

As of 2020, Wells Fargo serves over 70 million customers with more than 7,200 locations across the United States. You might be surprised to know that not every Wells Fargo customer uses the same routing number.

A routing number is a nine digit numerical code based on the location and financial institution where an account was opened. It is also often referred to as an ABA Routing Transit Number (ABA RTN).

Essentially, a routing number is a digital identifier (i.e. address) of where your account is located describing which bank your account is housed within and which branch of said bank.

Your account number, then, is the house number. A routing number is an important piece of information which helps identify where money should be sent to and taken from to carry out your financial transactions.

It’s not uncommon for routing numbers for a single financial institution to vary by location (predominantly state and territory). Why.

As we mentioned, Wells Fargo is a big bank which was founded back in 1852. Not all of Wells Fargo’s growth has been organic.

And instead of completely wiping out and replacing each acquisition’s infrastructure, they opted to absorb it. The other reason that Wells Fargo uses many different routing numbers is because of its size – both geographically and in terms of their customer base.

What if you moved to a different state after opening your account. Your routing number will be associated with the state or territory that you originally opened your account.

You might have noticed there are a few territories/states which share the same routing number, which is not in error. For example, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and American Forces Abroad all use the same routing number.

What’s a wire transfer. A wire transfer, also known as a bank transfer for bank wire, is a quick way to move money electronically directly from one person or bank to another.

A line of credit is a relatively popular method of borrowing money as a business, but much less common for individuals. It’s a flexible type of loan from a financial institution that allows borrows to access a defined amount of money.

Similar to a traditional type of loan, once the borrower begins accessing the money, interest will start being assessed. The loan then can be paid back immediately or or a predefined schedule.

Line of credit routing numbers differ in that they are based on the first three numbers of your account number. Thus, if your account number begins with “001”, then the associated routing number you should use is “073000228”, and so forth down the table.

It is a non-bank affiliate of the company and is also one of the biggest financial advising businesses in the US. Wells Fargo Advisors sets its customers up with what they call their Command Asset Program.

The Wells Fargo Command Asset Program Routing Number is 102307164. The Wells Fargo EasyPay Card is no longer open to new applicants, but is still accessible to anyone who already has one.

There are multiple options to reload the card, including direct transfers from your Wells Fargo or other external bank accounts, setting up direct deposit, or by depositing checks.

It’s always important to double check that you’re using the correct routing number before making any significant financial moves. Remember, the routing number is like the street name, city, and state of an address indicating where your money should be sent to or taken from.

If you don’t double check the routing number, your money could easily be sent to the wrong place.

Fill in the date [11]

If you haven’t written one in a while (or ever), here is a handy guide on how to write a check. Many consumers send money electronically these days, but occasionally it may still be necessary to pay by check.

It’s important to note that there are several different kinds of checks, including personal checks, cashier’s checks and traveler’s checks. Though they may come with different fees and different ordering protocols, the way you fill out each check is generally the same.

Write the current date on the line at the top right-hand corner. This information notifies the financial institution and the recipient of when you wrote it.

Either 4/24/2023 or April 24, 2023, could work, for example. On the line that says “Pay to the order of,” write the name of the individual or company you’d like to pay, known as the payee.

If you don’t know the exact name, you can write “cash” here. Be aware that if a check is made out to cash, anyone can cash or deposit it.

The first is a small box to the right of the line for the recipient’s name. Write the numerical dollar amount in this box.

Make sure you write this clearly so that the bank can subtract the correct amount from your account. Next, write out the dollar amount in words on the line below “Pay to the order of,” making sure it matches the numerical amount.

For example, if you wrote $100.30 in the box, you’ll write “One hundred and 30/100.” If the check is for $100 or another round number, still include 00/100 after the dollar amount for clarity. The memo section of the check is optional, but it’s a good idea to fill it out because it can serve as a reminder of what the check was for.

A company may ask you to write your account number or invoice number in this section, which helps ensure the payment is applied to the correct account. You would also write your account number in the memo area if the check’s for a bill payment.

Sign legibly, and make sure to use the same signature on file at your bank. A signature confirms to the bank that you agree to pay the stated amount to the payee.

your check should be all set to make a payment. (You may also want to check out Bankrate’s list of the best checking accounts.).

By following the steps outlined above and double-checking all of the information you’ve written out, you can make sure that your check payments will be processed accurately and securely. –Freelance writer Anna Baluch contributed to a previous version of this article.

It’s very important to know where you can find your bank routing and account number. Without knowing these numbers, it is impossible to do essential things such as setting up direct deposits, paying bills online, or even making a wire transfer.

The company also recently redesigned its mobile app, making finding your account and routing number even easier.

Because of this, you won’t have to look for this information on another page or setting.

Here’s how it’s done: If you’d rather not use the Wells Fargo mobile app, you can accomplish the same thing by logging into your Wells Fargo bank account on a computer web browser or any device’s web browser.
