Who’s coming with me? [1]

We all have dreams—both big and small. Dream jobs, dream dates, dream pets, dream accomplishments, and even dream vacations.

If you’ve been fantasizing about your ideal getaway for years, maybe it’s time to take action. And the only way to make any dream a reality is with proper planning.

We’ve compiled a list of seven key questions to help you make your dream vacation a reality.

After all, you’ve been imagining your ideal destination for the better part of your life. But for others, the answer is next to impossible because you want to go to all the places.

As you envision your answer, remember the key word “dream.” You’ll work out the financial details later, so don’t limit yourself. And while you’re thinking, realize your answer to this question might be affected by your answer to the next.

Have you been talking about visiting your family roots in Ireland with parents and siblings. Have you and your spouse shared a desire to go on an Alaskan cruise for ages.

Maybe your dream vacation is a shared dream with loved ones.

First, let’s be responsible. There’s no problem in dreaming big—especially when you’re ready to work hard saving up to make those big dreams come true.

It doesn’t mean you can’t prepare for a huge reward trip after you’re debt-free. That’d be a great way to celebrate.

Next, when we’re talking about timing, there are a few things to factor in:. For example, if you’re going to Iceland to see the Northern Lights, don’t go in the summer—you won’t see them.

Depending on who’s involved, you might need to travel during certain parts of the year. Kids have a naturally obvious break in their school schedule, which makes summer trips easier to coordinate without piles of makeup work.

This is a dream vacation, not your typical weekend trip two towns over. You’re going to need time to save.

We’ll tell you how to budget and save over time.

Some of these expenses (cars and living space) you’ll be able to divide among the others coming. The rest is up to you and your (perfectly prepared) wallet.

Once you have a total in mind, divide that cost by the number of months until you leave. This gives you what you’ll need to save each month.

With 15 months to save, that means stashing away $533 a month.

Take a moment to explore these possible solutions:. Extend your trips dates out.

Consider making some adjustments. Perhaps you’ll stay just 10 days instead of two weeks or skip out on an activity or two.

Stay serious as you save. Buckle down for the next 15 months—working and saving hard now so you can play hard later.

Search for thriftier options. Flying coach, renting more economical cars, reserving different living spaces: these are all ways to make the trip more affordable.

When you get to a number you know you can live with each month (even if it means living tighter), you’re ready to set up a fund in your EveryDollar budget. This feature helps you keep track of all the money you’re reserving for trip expenses.

Create a new budget line item titled “Dream Vacation.”. Choose to “Make this a Fund.”.

You now have a fund for your trip. Each month, enter the planned amount of $533 (or $297, or whatever you ended up with) in EveryDollar and transfer that amount to a savings account.

When you need to find extra money in your budget, the first place you need to go is, well, your budget. Start by looking for any extraneous spending.

You’ll be surprised how quickly little changes add up—and how much they’ll contribute to a better, even more fantastic getaway.

Then sign up for emails and text alerts about discounts.

Create yours today with EveryDollar. Check out AirfareWatchdog for plane ticket alerts, Hipmunk for hotel and lodging costs, and GasBuddy for the best gas prices.

You may come in under budget and have even more to spend on your special getaway adventure.

When times get hard, just think about the reward of lying on the beach or sitting at a Parisian café at sunset on a vacation that is already paid for. You’ll bring home all the memories and none of the debt.

Create a dream vacation fund with a free EveryDollar account.

Here Are 20+ Ways to Afford Your Dream Vacation [2]

For many people, a dream vacation is just that, a dream. But what if I told you that the amazing place you’ve always dreamed of is attainable.

But I assure that you can get there. Probably more quickly and easily than you think.

I don’t recall that there was anything that drew us there other than how easy it is to get married. It turns out that we absolutely loved Hawaii.

After that, we started traveling more. The following two trips were pretty safe, but it didn’t take long before we began taking the road less traveled.

We discovered that we’d rather take one three-week vacation instead of a few shorter ones. We really enjoy being able to dive into a place, get to know the culture, and not feel rushed.

The last couple of trips we took to Hawaii were three times longer than our first trip, but our expenses decreased. In this post, you’ll discover how we do this.

First things first, let’s address some money matters. My husband, Jer, and I have identified some common responses to our travels that I want to tackle head-on.

Let’s talk about what it means to afford something. For many of us living in the Western world, it’s not really a question of whether not we can afford something.

If you say you can’t afford a vacation but have a giant mortgage, car payments, an overloaded activities schedule, and order takeout most nights, understand that these are choices you’re making. The first step is to recognize that everything is a choice and that we have the power to choose what we most value.

The way that we feel about money determines our success with money. It’s impossible to prosper if the feelings you have about money are negative.

Now let’s address the other issue, paying it off. If you’ve been following my story, you’re probably familiar with our financial practices.

The bottom line is that my husband and I choose to not borrow money. That means no mortgages, no car payments, and no vacations on credit cards.

That’s okay. Please don’t let that deter you from the lessons I share about traveling.

Nobody needs them. I use credit cards, but firmly believe that you should never charge something that you don’t have the cash to pay for.

Therefore, under no circumstances would I accrue vacation debt on a credit card. So how do we pay for these vacations.

We save up for them. The first step is to set up a budget and learn where your money is going.

We have automatic transfers every other week to an account we don’t have easy access to. From there I allocate our savings into different categories: investments, emergency fund, car fund, home repairs, and a vacation fund.

I encourage you to do the same. Enough money talk.

We’re usually pretty good about this so I never truly understood how important it is. Our most recent trip was planned rather last-minute and during the high season.

Our average nightly expense for lodging was about the same, but the places were not nearly as nice. The earlier you book, the better deals you’ll get.

A lot of locations, like Hawaii, are just as wonderful during low season. If you enjoy lower prices and fewer crowds, plan your trip outside of peak season.

Take the opportunity to apply what I share to your preferences. Or maybe be open to trying something new.

When it comes to resorts, I’m not a fan. With the exception of one resort we visit in the winter, we prefer to find other lodging.

When I go on vacation I want to find a private corner of the world where I can experience peace and quiet. The idea of a mega resort with thousands of vacationers and a tram that takes me to my room kind of stresses me out.

It’s a great option for both health and budget reasons. We also enjoy winding down after a day of adventure in a private space where we can chat, cook, and enjoy the view.

This can be anything from a small condo-hotel, to an Airbnb, or a vacation home on VRBO (Vacation Rental By Owner). In Hawaii specifically, rooms range from $40 a night in an Airbnb or a hostel to $15,000 a night in an oceanfront mansion.

If you’re the type of person who goes on adventures every day and just use your room to sleep you don’t need to spend much. We like to spend at least part of our trip in an oceanfront condo or cottage so we can relax and breathe in the beauty and privacy.

It’s easy to justify cheaper lodging in one location so you can spend a little more somewhere else. If you’re renting an Airbnb, VRBO, or resort room for that matter, always check the total price.

One of the cottages we rented on our most recent trip was $200 more on Airbnb than through their website. Which brings up another good point.

And don’t be afraid to ask for a discount. If I’m staying somewhere for a week or during the low season and they don’t offer a discount upfront, I always ask.

So don’t be afraid to reach out and connect. Airfare can be one of the biggest expenses for your dream vacation.

That said, there are always deals to be found. The first tip is to be flexible.

Whenever there are price drops, I receive an email. Sticking with the Hawaii theme, I often see flights for less than $600.

I hadn’t until our last trip to Hawaii. We ended up scoring some pretty great deals.

We’re finicky about flight times and the number of layovers, so these were not bottom of the barrel deals. I found the flights to and from Minneapolis as a hacker fare on Kayak and booked the other flights directly through Hawaiian and Island Air.

Baggage and overweight fees can add up fast. Besides, unless you’re headed to one resort and staying there, luggage can be a pain in the you know what.

There are a lot of places where it makes sense to use public transportation. Big cities like Honolulu, Athens, and New York are not car friendly.

It’s common for us to use a combination of both public transportation and rental cars. When it comes to renting a car, do it as far in advance as possible.

Most rental car companies have excellent cancellation policies. This makes it easy to grab lower rates as they become available.

If you have a Costco membership map out their locations and get gas there when you can. In places like Hawaii, you could save more than $100 with this tip alone.

We’ve had great luck getting the best rates and upgrades with this free service to members. Activities can blow your budget.

While some things are definitely worth it, some of the best experiences are absolutely free. In fact, most of the things we like to do are free or very low-cost.

Pack a picnic lunch and head to the beach. When it comes to activities like snorkeling, consider renting equipment on your own instead of booking a tour*.

*Use your best judgment here. The ocean is a dangerous place.

Did you read the part in the lodging section where I talked about booking places with kitchens so you can prepare your own meals. Consider taking the money you save by eating in and putting it.

Pro-Travel Tips for Getting to Your Dream Travel Destination [3]

Most travelers dream of making memories all over the world. Ask any traveler where their dream travel destination is, and they’ll have a list of places to share, from exploring ancient cities in South America to riding hot air balloons in Myanmar.

Maybe you’re looking to add some new entries to an old list, or you’re still searching for that first love you can call your dream travel destination. Whatever the case, we’ve got some of the most incredible dream vacation ideas to reignite your quest and set your wanderlust aflame.

When choosing your dream travel destination, there are no wrong answers. No matter what you enjoy most, you can’t miss traveling to these dream vacation destinations.

Iceland is a country of marvels, from cities like quirky Reykjavik to natural wonders like Hverfjall crater. If you want to have your breath taken away, travel to Iceland for a dream destination unlike any other.

Though small, the signs ensure you won’t miss it. Or, just keep an eye out for the towering Hallgrímskirkja Church, which can be seen for miles around.

Below, Reykjavik’s streets offer Icelandic charm and beauty, including the Sun Voyager sculpture, the Harpa Concert Hall, and street art hidden down alleys and plastered on buildings. While the city has its share of sights, you’ll find Iceland’s best features on the road.

From the Golden Circle tour to charting your own course, you’ll find countless attractions to capture your attention. Stand before the might of the Gullfoss waterfall, take in the sights from Dyrholaey Viewpoint, and dive between two continents at the Silfra Ravine in Thingvellir National Park—the only place in the world where you can cross this item off your bucket list.

You’ll find black sand beaches dotting Iceland’s coast, each with something unique to offer. From the distinct basalt columns at Reynisfjara beach to the enormous chunks of iceberg washed ashore at Diamond Beach, you’re in for a treat wherever you travel.

Nature lovers should visit in the summer months, June to August, to take advantage of the best weather and most hours of sunlight. Treat yourself to hot springs, whale watching, and everything under the sun.

Sitting on the shores of Lake Wakatipu on New Zealand’s South Island, Queenstown possesses stunning views of gorgeous lakes and majestic mountains aptly named The Remarkables. But these stunning landmarks are far from the only reason Queenstown is a popular getaway.

As far as daring activities go, Queenstown doesn’t disappoint. Seek your thrills in the air paragliding off Coronet’s Peak or seek them in the water Jet Boat Riding through Shotover River at over 50mph.

You can even try superhero flying off the freestyle jump at Ledge Bungy for amazing panoramic views of Queenstown, The Remarkables, and Lake Wakatipu—that is, if you’re not jumping off backward. And if you’re thinking about adventures on land, try hopping on a gondola ride up to Skyline, where you can appreciate the gorgeous scenery as you’re walking, mountain bike riding, or racing back downhill on a luge.

Additionally, you can’t go to Queenstown without making a trip to Fiordland National Park a priority. Take a helicopter tour over Milford Sound for a bird’s eye view of the incredible scenery or, for a closer look, take a boat cruise with the dramatic cliffs of the fjords rising up around you.

New Zealand’s summer, December to March, is the optimal time for experiencing the outdoors and all the heart-pounding adventures you can stomach. The long and sunny days are perfect for outdoor excursions of all kinds.

Claiming another spot on our dream travel destinations list is Fiji, though divers know it by another name: The Soft Coral Capital of the World. Fiji’s Rainbow Reef often ranks among the world’s most beautiful coral reefs, and the name says it all.

But it’s not the only coral reef or great diving spot to be found. The crystal clear waters surrounding Fiji highlight the vibrant coral reefs in dream places like Bligh Water and Somosomo Strait.

Once you drag yourself away from the sea, you’ll find plenty of activities to keep you busy on land. Horseback ride along the island’s coasts or travel inland and visit the Koroyanitu National Park, where you’ll find hiking trails, mountain biking, and natural pools perfect for a relaxing swim.

You’ll also want to try out island hopping on a day trip or spend a few days at popular destinations like Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands. Yasawa is one of 15 Fijian words meaning heaven.

And, of course, a trip to Fiji wouldn’t be complete without visiting one of the local villages to experience daily life, meet the friendly residents, and participate in the traditional culture. Fiji’s magical experiences on land and sea are reason enough to mark this dream destination among your future travels.

However, if you’re looking to take advantage of the best weather, plan your visit for July to September. Of course, as this is peak season, prices tend to skyrocket and crowds descend.

The Maldives is synonymous with luxury resorts, overwater bungalows, and white sandy beaches.

Home to roughly five percent of the world’s reef area, the Maldives’ sprawling coral reefs offer the perfect reason to strap on your snorkeling gear and dive right in.

Take your surfboard to the waves of the Indian Ocean or scour the water for a glimpse of dolphins or whales on a boat tour.

To get a true sense of Maldivian culture and life outside the flashy resorts, you can take an island hopping tour and get to know the locals. When rounding off your stay, you can add the Huvafen Fushi Maldives underwater spa and resort to your bucket list.

If you’ve ever wanted to be spoiled and indulged while feeling like you’ve been spirited away to the legendary city of Atlantis, then this place will make those dreams a reality. The Maldives is a stunning destination you’ll want to return to again and again to enjoy the kind of pampered holiday we all deserve.

If you plan your trip a little earlier, in October or November, you may even be able to spot whale sharks, a rare and memorable experience for those lucky enough to see it.

Taking a peak within its walls, it’s not hard to understand why. Jaipur bears a distinctly fairytale-like spirit, and its moniker as the “Pink City” of India certainly brings that idea to life.

Jaipur bursts with history and interest around every corner, from its planned layout to the limestone and Indian red brick powder that earned the city its nickname. Every road offers a wealth of amazing things to explore and even more amazing pictures to capture.

These windows were used by royal ladies to view festivals and everyday life in the streets. Countless jewels, from the intricately designed City Palace and the sprawling Amer Fort to Jal Mahal—a palace with four of its five stories sitting underwater—make Jaipur shine.

(That reminds us, Siri, add the Taj Mahal to our bucket list, please.). India is a vast country, and Jaipur is.

Five months into a nation-wide pandemic lockdown and some Canadians are starting to feel a little squirrely. Let’s face it, we love to travel.

With travel restrictions and strict advisories in place, a winter getaway might not be in the cards this year. But instead of letting it get you down, why not take this opportunity to plan your dream vacation.

The pandemic has been stressful for many of us. When all of this is over, taking a much-needed getaway to unwind from the uncertainty will be top of mind for many Canadians.

Whether you’re dreaming of going to a 5-star, all-inclusive tropical resort, skiing down mountains to a chalet-spotted village, or wining and dining in a world-class city, you need a plan in place to save that cash money in order to make that dream a reality. We’ve got some simple tips that anyone can use to help save the money needed for their next dream holiday.

The first step in saving for your vacation is knowing how much you need to save. Plan your vacation meticulously by researching all costs associated with your trip in the destination city, including accommodations, excursions, food, shopping, transportation, and taking currency exchange, fees and tips into consideration.

Create a budget so you can prioritize accordingly. Once the budget is set, you can start implementing strategies to save the necessary funds.

When you set up an account specifically for pleasure travel, you are signalling a true commitment to your self-care. Of course, the vacation fund savings account only works if you work it.

Allocate a portion of your income to the vacation fund each month. If you don’t have to juggle expenses and you can afford to, automatically transfer funds to the account each pay cheque.

Keeping your vacation money separate from all other expenses is a good way to focus on saving and to avoid over-spending money that should be allocated to other living expenses. If you end each month either skint or in the hole, it is time to have a hard look at your budget.

Here are a few quick ideas that won’t hurt to implement:. Everything from streaming services and music to wine and beauty boxes can be packaged and delivered to you for a monthly fee these days.

enough so that they don’t necessarily warrant a line item in your budget.

Most subscriptions are a nice-to-have, but often not essential for daily living. Cancel any non-essential subscriptions and redirect those funds to your vacation savings fund.

The math on this one is simple. It costs a fraction of the money to cook your own food at home than it does to eat out.

Brewing and toasting it yourself will still save you money.

If you go out for dinner and drinks with friends a few times a month, commit to reducing it to once a month. The money you save will make a big impact on your vacation fund.

We already suggested you eat at home over eating out. However, with rising food costs, you also need to be a savvy shopper to ensure that you aren’t paying a fortune to eat fresh, healthy foods.

Trim your grocery budget by using coupons, buying in bulk, and avoiding prepared foods. Meal plan and stick to your grocery list.

You’ll be surprised how much you can save when you really start to examine your food spending and shop more strategically. Travel reward credit cards are often worth the annual fee, if you find one that gives you perks you can really take advantage of.

You can also earn rewards on every dollar charged to your credit card. If you have big purchases that you can charge to a credit card and pay off immediately, you may want to consider a rewards card as a way of partially funding some of your holiday budget.

With a free bill payment app, like Paytm, you earn rewards points for paying your bills through the app. The points can then be redeemed for cash gift cards that you can use to buy groceries, pay for subscriptions, eat out, or shop — including popular brands like Amazon, Instacart, Starbucks and Best Buy.

It’s all about finding savings wherever you can.

Picture yourself sitting in a cabana by your private pool sipping a piña colada. Start dreaming and get planning.

What are the Top Dream Destinations for a Vacation or Holiday? [10]

Los Angeles, CA (10/21/22) Our SabbaticalHomes.com member surveys in 2020 and 2021 were designed to understand how our academic community was managing personal pandemic challenges and overall work / life balance issues. In 2022, we switched gears and completed a travel focused survey.

We believe traveling to other locations, interacting with people in different cities, universities, languages and countries makes the exchange of ideas possible. And when thinking people exchange ideas, the best possible outcome is that every thoughtful interaction can have the ripple effect of opening minds and solving problems.

Our global community lives in countries all over the world. Some people even live in a couple of locations throughout the year depending on their work and research.

It is probably no surprise that Europe overall is a very desirable vacation destination, with Italy and France at the top of many of our survey respondents’ lists. Of course, there are so many places to visit within these two countries alone, that could be a standalone survey.

And our favorite response: “Anywhere. ”.

We’re not playing favorites with the European destinations. there were plenty of responses that indicate how curious our member respondents are about the world and show a true traveler mentality:

We heard a variety of responses worldwide, with detail like:.

Whether you are looking for temporary housing or tenants for a holiday, relocation, fellowship, sabbatical, research trip and something else entirely, you can always search our listings and dream a little about places to stay on SabbaticalHomes.com. Work Out Your Budget [12]

Planning a vacation is never easy, but if it is your dream vacation that makes it even more of a challenge. It can be downright overwhelming as you try to get the absolute most out of your dream vacation.

Well that’s where this guide comes in. It will help you go through the entire planning phase of your dream vacation so you can get everything out of it that your heart desires.

Once you’ve settled on a destination, or destinations plural it is time to start dreaming. All good dreams start with a list.

Make a list of everything you know about your dream destination that you are even slightly inclined to see or do. Right now nothing is too small, too difficult, or too outlandish.

Once you’ve exhausted your knowledge of your destination then it’s time to take the research online. I like to use a combination of Pinterest and TripAdvisor for this part.

Is Ireland your destination. It’s a small enough country you can easily drive across it in a few hours.

But, if your destination is Los Angeles, you aren’t going to be taking a day trip to New York. So start with the largest region that makes sense.

See what Pinterest has about travel in those locations and add anything that catches your eye to the list. I recommend looking at 10 different websites to get a variety of ideas.

Unless the article is specifically named “Things to do in Paris that aren’t the Eiffel Tower” then no. After you’ve looked at the wider picture it’s time to narrow your search.

So for instance if you’re traveling to Ireland, you’re most likely going to end up in Dublin. So search specifically for Dublin and again, write down everything that catches your eye, no matter how small it is.

In the Ireland example, this might include Galway, the Wild Atlantic Way, or even Northern Ireland. To use an American example, perhaps you had previously looked up Southern California, now you’re searching Hollywood, Orange County, and San Diego just to name a few options.

Personally, I like to look at the top 100 things to do for each area and again, write down everything I might want to do. In the end you will have a pretty massive list but try not to get overwhelmed by it.

So you’ve got your list put together of things you’d like to see and do on your dream vacation, what comes next. Well, next you need to give each one a priority rating.

1 – Must-See, non-negotiable. Examples: Eiffel Tower, the Colosseum in Rome, or the Great Pyramids.

Examples: An LA Lakers game, Climbing Half Dome in Yosemite. 3 – Sort of Interesting.

4 – Least Important. Examples: Street Art, The Little Museum of Dublin.

This is the time to be completely honest with yourself. Remember that just because other people consider something a must-see for a particular destination doesn’t mean you HAVE to go there.

Dublin doesn’t have a great skyline so you’re really only there for the drinking. Any of the ones that you’ve given a 4 go ahead and put a line through them.

This way you aren’t deleting them but you are quite clearly showing that for now at least, you are not going to go do those things. This might change though, you might finish your planning and discover that you have extra time leftover or you might find that the Street Art is only around the corner from the Eiffel tower and squeeze it in any way.

Are you happy with the rankings you’ve given everything. Don’t be afraid to second guess yourself.

Make it everything you want it to be. Now it’s time to set aside your lists for a few minutes and consider time.

Visiting Switzerland for example is a wildly different experience in summer than it is in the winter. For some destinations, though like Los Angeles it doesn’t really make much of a difference if you’re visiting in Spring or Fall, the environment doesn’t change all that much from season to season.

It might be fireworks in Sydney for New Years, KFC for Christmas dinner in Japan, or a Full Moon Party in Thailand. This might result in you adding a few new things to your list, don’t forget to give them a ranking too.

How much time off can you get from work for this trip. This will help you prioritize things even more and it might see you going back to the list to make some more adjustments as you see that there simply isn’t enough time to see it all, there never is.

Now that you’ve got your dream lists compiled it’s time to start getting a little bit more down to Earth. Don’t do anything with the lists just yet.

Be realistic, be honest, and don’t bankrupt yourself. Give yourself a budget that will grant you comfort on your trip as well as after it.

Could you possibly get a part-time job between now and when you go on your trip. Or maybe there are things around your house that you could sell to make some extra cash.

This is the point where budget meets dreams and you get an awful dose of reality. As much as you might want to, chances are you aren’t going to be staying in the Ritz-Carlton for your New Year’s Eve trip to New York City.

This is the stage where you balance your checkbook so to speak. If there is anything you want to go to or do that has an admission cost factor that in.

I like to plan for one really fancy meal each week of my trip so I might double the cost of one of the dinners. Don’t forget to factor in gifts, souvenirs, and whatever other shopping you might want to do there.

You never know when you’re going to go to Japan and buy a kotatsu table then have to work out how to ship it back home. Seriously, it’s on my list for my trip to Japan.

You don’t have to follow the schedule religiously but having a schedule will help serve as a reminder of all the things you want to do on your trip. You don’t want to do what I did in Malta and decide to go see the Azure Window next time only for it to collapse before you made it back.
