Postal Service has teams of forensic scientists who can catch the subtle differences between a real postage stamp and a fake one, however, an average person could easily make that mistake and use a counterfeit stamp, which is a federal crime. Other legitimate retailers such as Costco, Walgreens, and CVS are permitted to sell postage stamps at a discount by law, so it is possible to get postage stamps for slightly cheaper.

You should always be buying stamps from approved vendors to avoid using counterfeit ones and having your mail confiscated, and never from an online platform like Facebook, Instagram, or any other retailer that you have never heard of. It’s not exactly that Facebook allows people to post fraudulent ads to the site.

The way they do this is by buying accounts that have already gone through the verification process, such as business manager accounts that are allowed to post lots of ads.

Once hackers take over these accounts, they can charge thousands of dollars in ad spending to credit cards associated with the compromised accounts and post whatever ads they want. So, it’s really a flaw within Facebook’s verification process that allows these ads to come to life.

Postal officials warn that deeply discounted postage stamps may be a scam. But you’ll have to look carefully to see whether they’re fake.

The number of counterfeit stamps being sold online is escalating, postal officials said Wednesday. Scammers are peddling them on social media, through e-commerce and third-party vendors.

And while email is replacing snail mail, scammers are selling counterfeit stamps — especially during the holidays — because many folks still send greeting cards. The postal service processed and estimated 1.3 billion of them.

Fake ones don’t. The counterfeit stamps often are sold in bulk, with discounts from 20% to 50% off their face value, and a popular postage to imitate is the first-class Forever stamp — most often the Flag stamp — for a 1-ounce card or letter, which costs 58 cents.

What can you do.

Postal Inspection Service, the law enforcement arm of the postal service, has said that if you see a deal on postage stamps that’s “too good to pass up. ” — say half off — the stamps are “probably counterfeit.”.

The postal service doesn’t discount stamps, but some retailers do. Still, getting confirmation on what’s legitimate is more challenging.

The Free Press followed up with a call and email seeking clarification, and inspectors responded with a longer, but also vague email: “The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is actively working to identify shipments of counterfeit postage stamps entering the U.S.

It’s illegal to knowingly send mail with counterfeit stamps, but it’s not entirely clear how aggressively the postal service checks for fake stamps given the volume of mail and that older stamps that evade counterfeit countermeasures are still in use. If the postal service does detect bogus stamps, it may return the mail to sender or turn it over to the postal inspection service.

Last month, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported a man who had been scammed by an ad he saw on Facebook. It offered 100 regular U.S.

When the Philadelphian tried to report it to the social media network, he was told “the online seller did not violate its rules.” It wasn’t until the Inquirer asked about his case that Facebook removed the advertiser and the man got a refund.

If a scammer collects your personal data and payment information, that could trigger other problems: identity theft and fraudulent purchases without your permission or knowledge.

In addition to a ridiculously low price, here are some other things to look for: Website addresses, which appear legitimate, but aren’t.

Examples include: uspsstam.com, UUStamps.com and uspssts.com.

AARP, which reported on fake stamps, sent an email to a suspect site. The response was from the “qijiuzhongfu Support Team,” a red flag.

If you feel pressured to make a purchase and have doubts, it might be better to lose a seemingly good deal than to lose your money.

Postal service in the United States began with the delivery of stampless letters whose cost was borne by the receiving person, later encompassed pre-paid letters carried by private mail carriers and provisional post offices, and culminated in a system of universal prepayment that required all letters to bear nationally issued adhesive postage stamps.

In the earliest days, ship captains arriving in port with stampless mail would advertise in the local newspaper names of those having mail and for them to come collect and pay for it, if not already paid for by the sender. Postal delivery in the United States was a matter of haphazard local organization until after the Revolutionary War, when eventually a national postal system was established.

Each of these stamps generally bore the face or bust of an American president or another historically important statesman. However, once the Post Office realized during the 1890s that it could increase revenues by selling stamps as “collectibles”, it began issuing commemorative stamps, first in connection with important national expositions, later for the anniversaries of significant American historical events.

Today, many stamps issued by the post office are self-adhesive, and no longer require that the stamps be “licked” to activate the glue on their back. In many cases, post office clerks now use Postal Value Indicators (PVI), which are computer labels, instead of stamps.[citation needed].

These stamps are still valid for the full rate even if there is a rate increase. However, for other uses, adhesive stamps with denomination indicators are still available and sold.

Postal services began in the first half of the 17th century serving the first American colonies of Britain and France. today, the United States Postal Service is a large government organization providing a wide range of services across the United States and its territories abroad.

In the American colonies, informal independently-run postal routes began in Boston as early as 1639, with Boston to New York City service starting in 1672.[citation needed] Courier service began between Montreal and Quebec City by 1693, and likely occurred earlier, as Pedro da Silva, a courier, had arrived more than 20 years before that.

Officially sanctioned mail service began in 1692 when King William III granted to an English nobleman a delivery “patent” that included the exclusive right to establish and collect a formal postal tax on official documents of all kinds.

In the years leading up to the American Revolution, mail routes among the colonies existed along the few roads between Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Montreal, Trois Rivieres, and Quebec City. Halifax stationer Benjamin Leigh started postal service in Nova Scotia by 1754.

From New York, any available ships carried mail to port cities, including Halifax. In the middle 18th century, individuals like Benjamin Franklin and William Goddard were the colonial postmasters who managed the mails then, and were the general architects of a postal system that started out as an alternative to the Crown Post (the colonial mail system then) which became more distrusted as the American Revolution drew near.

The dates and postmarks generated from these places often has provided the historian with a window into a given time and place in question.[citation needed] Each postmark is uniquely distinctive with its own name of state and town, in addition to its distinctive date.

Mail and postmarks generated from prisoner of war camps during the Civil War, or from aboard naval ships, each with a U.S. Post Office aboard, can and have offered amazing insights into United States history and are avidly sought after by historians and collectors alike.

Between 1874 and 1976 post offices were categorized from first to fourth classes based on the amount of revenue they generated, with first being the highest.

The task of collecting money for letter after letter greatly slowed the postman on his route. Moreover, the addressee would at times refuse a piece of mail, which then had to be taken back to the Post Office (post office budgets always allowed for an appreciable volume of unpaid-for mail).

To be sure, postmasters allowed some citizens to run charge accounts for their delivered and prepaid mail, but bookkeeping on these constituted another inefficiency.

but a precondition for their issue by a nation was the establishment of standardized rates for delivery throughout the country.

The introduction of postage stamps in the UK in May 1840 was received with great interest in the United States (and around the world). Later that year, Daniel Webster rose in the U.S.

It would be private enterprise, however, that brought stamps to the U. S.

This stamp was a 3¢ issue bearing a rather amateurish drawing of George Washington, printed from line engraved plates in sheets of 42 images. The company had been founded by Henry Thomas Windsor, a London merchant who at the time was living in Hoboken, New Jersey.

Greig was advertised as the post’s “agent,” and as a result, historians and philatelists have tended to refer to the firm simply as “Greig’s City Despatch Post,” making no mention of Windsor. In another innovation, the company placed mail-collection boxes around the city for the convenience of its customers.

A few months after its founding, the City Despatch Post was sold to the U.S. government, which renamed it the “United States City Despatch Post.” The government began operation of this local post on August 16, 1842, under an Act of Congress of some years earlier that authorized local delivery.

In its revised form, this issue accordingly became the first postage stamp produced under the auspices of a government in the western hemisphere.[citation needed]. An Act of Congress of March 3, 1845 (effective July 1, 1845), established uniform (and mostly reduced) postal rates throughout the nation, with a uniform rate of five cents for distances under 300 miles (500 km) and ten cents for distances between 300 and 3,000 miles.

Just as you are scrambling to send those last-minute holiday cards, maybe with a last-minute gift card to a favorite store or restaurant tucked inside, we’re being warned of yet another scam. OK, wait for it.

Seriously.

I guess it shouldn’t be all that surprising as consumer watchdogs told us early in the season to expect a flurry of phony websites. The fake sites aim to rip off consumers by offering fantastic bargains.

Or you might spend money and receive nothing at all. Shoppers need to be careful because the crooks will impersonate big name brands, mirroring the look and design of the legitimate site, like Lululemon.

The con artists know that consumers will do a Google search to find all sorts of items being sold online, including holiday stamps, when they’re in a rush and don’t have time to go to a store or the post office. “After a quick Google search for stamps, you click on a link that advertises a 50% discount on stamps,” according to the BBB warning.

Postal Service isn’t offering any half-off sales on stamps. Instead, the U.S.

Yet, scammers are hoping that you’ll suspend reality a bit when you spot a deal online and think, ‘Wow, I just found a great bargain while I had absolutely no time to go to the post office.’. So you buy the stamps.

“Later, you see the charge to your credit card was made by someone’s PayPal account — not USPS,” the BBB warned. When you try to contact the customer service department, you might get an email back from a scammer who continues to impersonate someone from the post office.

I received an email from [email protected] stating that I was being refunded. However, that pending refund transaction later disappeared from my credit card account.”.

But Andrea Avery, assistant inspector in charge of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, noted in a YouTube video that counterfeiters are using designs of other stamps, too, adding that one seizure included batches of the more colorful patriotic spiral or starburst stamps.

I spotted an offer online for 100 of the spiral Forever USA stamps, stamps with a gold star in the middle of the design, selling for $29.99 — which amounts to roughly 30 cents a stamp at a time when the price of one Forever Stamp is now 66 cents. A Forever stamp bought years ago, even if you paid far less for it, can be used now to mail a one-ounce letter.

It’s “Forever.”. The first Forever Stamp was issued in April 2007 and it featured an image of the Liberty Bell.

They do not work and if you look at them closely, they are not legitimate.”. The U.S.

Other warnings about fake stamps were issued back during the 2021 holiday season, too. “Scammers peddle fake stamps on social media marketplaces, e-commerce sites via third-party vendors, and other websites,” according to the 2023 alert from the U.S.

Online promotions might offer fake stamps at 20% to 50% below their face value. It’s best to buy stamps from the post office or from approved vendors, which can include legitimate “big box” or warehouse retailers who can provide an extremely small but legitimate discount on postage stamps through resale agreements with the U.S.

Major retailers, such as Kroger, CVS and Walgreens, also sell books of stamps, if you’re unable to get to a post office. Costco Wholesale had 100 stamps — five books of 20 stamps each — listed online for $65.75.

The tips for avoiding the stamp scam are similar to those offered to avoid other online shopping scams: Check the website’s URL for slightly misspelled words or other red flags of a fake site. Be extremely wary of deals you see promoted on social media.

Presidents of the United States have frequently appeared on U.S. postage stamps since the mid-19th century.

The advent of presidents on postage stamps has been definitive to U.S. postage stamp design since the first issues were released and set the precedent that U.S.

The paper postage stamp itself was born of utility (in England, 1840), as something simple and easy to use was needed to confirm that postage had been paid for an item of mail. People could purchase several stamps at one time and no longer had to make a special trip to pay for postage each time an item was mailed.

This is where the appearance of presidents on stamps was introduced. Moreover, the subject theme of a president, along with the honors associated with it, is what began to define the stamp issues in ways that took it beyond the physical postage stamp itself and is why people began to collect them.

The portrayals of Washington and Franklin on U.S. postage are among the most definitive of examples and have appeared on numerous postage stamps.

presidents were the only designs found on U.S. postage from 1847 until 1869, with the one exception of Benjamin Franklin, whose historical stature was comparable to that of a president, although his appearance was also an acknowledgement of his role as the first U.S.

During this period, the U.S. Post Office issued various postage stamps bearing the depictions of George Washington foremost, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, and Abraham Lincoln, the last of whom first appeared in 1866, one year after his death.

These new issues had other nonpresidential subjects and a design style that was also different, one issue bearing a horse, another a locomotive, while others were depicted with nonpresidential themes. Washington and Lincoln were to be found only once in this series of eleven stamps, which some considered to be below par in design and image quality.

In 1870 the Post Office resumed its tradition of printing postage stamps with the portraits of American presidents and Franklin but now added several other famous Americans, including Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, Alexander Hamilton and General Winfield Scott among other notable Americans. Indeed, the balance had now shifted somewhat.

Moreover, presidents also appeared on less than half of the denominations in the definitive sets of 1890, 1917, 1954 and 1965, while occupying only a slight majority of values in the definitive issues of 1894–1898, 1902 and 1922–1925.

The 1975 Americana Series marked a clear end to this tradition, being the first U.S. definitive issue on which no presidential portrait appeared.

Every deceased U.S. president as of 2023[update] has appeared on at least one U.S.

Bush, have appeared on at least two. Per postal office regulations, no living figure is permitted to be the subject of a postage stamp, so no living President is permitted on a postage stamp.

The portrayals of various American presidents made their first appearances on U.S. postage at different times for very different reasons.

George Washington (February 22, 1732 – December 14, 1799) was the first president of the United States, serving from 1789 to 1797, and before this, served as the commander of the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War from 1775 to 1783. The Electoral College elected Washington unanimously in 1789, and again in the 1792 election.

Washington took his oath of office while standing on the balcony of Federal Hall on Wall Street in New York City.

postage begins with George Washington. Near the end of Washington’s second term as president, Martha Washington commissioned the well-known portrait artist Gilbert Stuart to paint both her portrait and the president’s.

The two portraits remained unfinished and tacked to a door in Stuart’s Boston studio until his death in 1828. In 1860, artist Rembrandt Peale finished Stuart’s work, filling in where this artist had left off.

by private letter-carrying services and by local postmasters. Indeed, the first postage stamp ever produced in the Western Hemisphere was a 3-cent issue bearing a somewhat crude engraving of Washington, introduced in 1842 by the City Despatch Post in New York City.

In 1845, the New York Postmaster issued a provisional stamp for local use which offered a far more elegant image of Washington, engraved by the firm of Rawdon, Wright and Hatch (the same company that, two years later, would produce the first National U.S. postage stamps).

Washington was the only president depicted on any of the postmasters’ provisionals released during this period.

Engravers from this period typically used the works of John Trumbull, Gilbert Stuart and Jean Antoine Houdon as models for their engravings.
