Here at Zippia, we love math (and jobs. ), so we delved into the data to determine where in 2019 it was easiest to find a job in Florida.

There you have it, folks- the ten cities where it was easiest to get a job in Florida. Keep reading for a more detailed breakdown of how we reached these results.

Keep scrolling to see where it landed on the full list. We used the most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics to pull data for the main Florida metro areas.

We opted to take a more in-depth look at the best job markets in the country. The lower the score in each category the better.

The four ranked categories were then averaged together to produce our final list. The final list ranks the 24 metro areas from 1-to-24.

While Tampa and the surrounding metro area have the hottest job market in Florida, personal finances can be, well, personal. Education, work experience, and occupation all play a big role in securing a job.

A majority of the members of the Florida work group that developed new standards for teaching African American history opposed the sections that have recently drawn criticism, including that middle schoolers be instructed that enslaved people developed “skills” that could be used for their “personal benefit,” three members of the work group said.

“Most of us did not want that language,” one member said, adding that two of the 13 members of the group pushed to include those specific items.

The standards, which are to be used by students in kindergarten through 12th grade, have been widely criticized as “propaganda” and a “sanitized“ version of history.

“These extremist, so-called leaders should model what we know to be the correct and right approach if we really are invested in the well-being of our children,” Harris said last week in Jacksonville, where she was joined by the president of the NAACP. “They dare to push propaganda to our children.

We’re not supposed to do that.”. The work group members who spoke to NBC News said that only two members of the work group, William Allen and Frances Presley Rice, advocated for the criticized language.

“The intent of this particular benchmark clarification is to show that some slaves developed highly specialized trades from which they benefitted,” they wrote. “This is factual and well documented.”.

“People were very vocal” and questioned “how there could be a benefit to slavery,” one work group member said about the language. Allen, the member said, countered the arguments by using Frederick Douglass as an example.

“However, Dr. Allen is focusing on the few slaves who actually did learn something and keeps alluding to Frederick Douglass,” one work group member said.

All three members described him in separate interviews as “persuasive” and “knowledgeable” and said the group deferred to him.

One of those members called the language in the final product “problematic” and said the group “could have done a better job” if it had been given more time to work. Allen did not immediately return a request for comment Friday in response to the members’ characterization of events.

The Florida Education Department did not respond to a request for comment. The revelations about the group’s inner workings come as the state maintains a lack of transparency around the work group.

The Education Department has not responded to repeated requests to identify the members of the work group nor has it disclosed how they were selected or detailed how they came up with the new language. Florida Gov.

“You should talk to them about it,” he said, referring to the group, at an event last week. “I didn’t do it.

DeSantis said he believed “what they’re doing is, they’re probably going to show some of the folks that eventually parlayed, you know, being a blacksmith into doing things later in life.”. The names of the 13 work group members were confirmed to NBC News by two members of the group who asked to remain anonymous.

NBC News sought comment from all of the members through various means, leaving messages for some while others could not be reached. The group is racially and politically diverse.

Allen, who lives in Maryland, is a professor emeritus of political science at Michigan State University. He was on the U.S.

Presley Rice, on her LinkedIn page, describes herself as an “independent consultant, providing advice about the production of African American History documentary production.”.

It is not clear on what criteria the applicants were evaluated. While most members of the group have kept a low profile, Presley Rice and Allen have spoken out.

They mentioned blacksmithing, shoemaking, fishing, teaching and tailoring as examples of skills enslaved people developed. “Florida students deserve to learn how slaves took advantage of whatever circumstances they were in to benefit themselves and the community of African descendants.”.

In an interview with NBC News earlier in the week, Allen said the work group “deliberated between February and the end of April to review the curriculum standards and to propose new benchmarks and standards.”. “I think we may have had, over the course of the period from February to April, three or four meetings,” he said, adding that each meeting took place over several days at Education Department facilities in Tallahassee.

The individuals who spoke to NBC News said some of the meetings were held over Microsoft Teams and that the entire panel did not attend every meeting.

“Most people think that we work on behalf of the African American History Task Force and that wasn’t the case,” the member said. “It was two separate groups.”.

Geraldine Thompson, who opposes the new standards, said in an interview with NBC News that she had been involved with the African American History Task Force for decades, but was not aware that there was a work group. “I don’t know who the people were who worked on this,” she said.

And people that you would expect would be involved or at least informed, were not.”. Another task force member, state Rep.

Florida’s Board of Education was required to change its standards for African American history education, among other things, to comply with House Bill 7, also known as the Stop WOKE Act, that DeSantis signed into law in April 2022.

The law is being challenged in court. De Santis has repeatedly claimed, without evidence, that public school educators have tried to indoctrinate students with a liberal agenda.

Finance Buzz Article. Tech is one of the fastest-growing employment sectors in America, and as the industry has grown, specific cities have become major hubs for technology companies.

We wanted to take a deeper look at some of those cities, starting close to home. As a Florida-based tech company ourselves, we examined which metropolitan areas across the Sunshine State are the best for tech jobs based on factors relating to industry employment, earnings, and more.

For this analysis, we collected hard data and statistics on every single major metro area in the state of Florida, for which the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) publishes employment data.

Each city was given a score relative to all other cities for each factor. Those scores were then weighted based on importance.

The factors we chose were:.

Located on the east coast of central Florida, the Sebastian-Vero Beach metro area is the only area that earned an overall score higher than 75, putting it well ahead of the rest of the state when it comes to tech jobs. Sebastian-Vero Beach earned a score of 4.5 or higher in three different categories, the only city in our analysis to do so.

There are many open tech jobs and low competition at well-regarded tech companies such as Microsoft, Cisco Systems, and Citrix. The second-place metro area is located in almost the exact same part of Central Florida as the number-one city — just on the opposite coast.

Petersburg-Clearwater metro area also boasts a perfect score when it comes to the number of highly rated tech companies. Both Tech Data and Sykes Enterprises are headquartered in the area.

Petersburg-Clearwater area earned a near-perfect score when it comes to internet connectivity and scores higher than 3.5 on tech job salary and availability. The theme park mecca of Orlando headlines the number three metro area.

Beyond tech job openings with theme park giants Disney and Universal, other notable tech companies in the area include Electronic Arts, Facebook, and Hewlett-Packard. Orlando also includes one of the ten largest research parks in the country, which hosts a number of technology-focused businesses and labs.

Jacksonville is home to a number of major military installations and the headquarters for four different Fortune 500 companies, including financial technology giant FIS. Those workplaces helped the city earn a perfect score in the 4+ star company category, while strong internet infrastructure gave Jacksonville a 4.7 connectivity score.

Outside of the NASA hubs at Cape Canaveral and the Kennedy Space Center, tech workers can find employment at places such as L3Harris Technologies and nearly 500 different aerospace companies. These companies propelled Palm Bay-Melbourne-Titusville to a perfect score in the 4+ star company category.

Lakeland-Winter Haven is the first metro area on this list without a score of 5 out of 5 in the highly-rated tech company category. Instead, these cities earned their spot in the top 10 thanks to strong performances in the areas of tech job availability (a perfect 5 out of 5) and competition level for tech jobs (a score of 4.1).

The final metro area on our list with a perfect 5 out of 5 score for the number of highly rated tech companies in the area, the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach area is home to the headquarters of Latin America operations for many major corporations. That includes tech-focused companies like Cisco, Oracle, SBC Communications, and Launch Potato, the parent company of FinanceBuzz.

Punta Gorda is the final city to earn an overall score in excess of 60. The city earned that score thanks to strong showings in two different categories: tech job competition and per capita tech job availability.

Much like Punta Gorda, the North Port-Sarasota-Bradenton metro area earned scores of 3.4 and higher in four of the six categories to achieve a top-10 finish. The top overall categories were tech job salary (where the metro earned a 3.7) and internet connectivity (where it earned a 3.5).

Strong showings in the areas of cost of living and tech job competition also helped Panama City earn the final slot in the list of Florida’s 10 best cities for tech jobs. Tips for getting the most out of your job and career.

Methodology and sources. For this analysis, FinanceBuzz collected data for all Florida metropolitan areas that the Bureau of Labor Statistics published data on.

Data for each metro was put into a dynamic formula that assigned a 0-5 score to each metro for every factor, with scores being relative to all other metro areas in our evaluation. Individual factor scores were then weighted and added together to get a final score on a 0-100 scale.

Job Competition Score – Assigned location quotient score for tech jobs in each metro area – Bureau of Labor Statistics – Weight: 4.0. Salary Score – Assigned annual mean wage for tech jobs in each metro area – Bureau of Labor Statistics – Weight: 4.0.

Highly-Rated Tech Companies Score – Number of companies with 4+ star ratings under the “technology” category in each metro area on August 17, 2021 – Glassdoor – Weight: 4.33. Job Availability Score – Population for each metro area divided by the number of open tech jobs on Indeed.com on August 17, 2021 – Indeed.com and the U.S.

State of Florida Internet Connectivity Ranking Score – Proprietary ranking of internet infrastructure, quality, and cost in each metro area relative to the rest of Florida – BroadBandNow – Weight: 2.0.

CHATTAHOOCHEE — Fifteen-year-old Rubi Sandoval remembers where she was when she first heard of Florida’s new immigration law. It was Mother’s Day, and her family had a big party on their front lawn at their home in north Florida near the Georgia border.

Ron DeSantis two days prior. “I was like, oh no, this is bad for us, this is bad for everyone,” Sandoval said.

Sandoval and her family drove the 45-minute trip to the Capitol to protest with members of her community. It was her first protest, and it won’t be her last.

Sandoval was inspired by the work stoppage and has been working to organize her rural Panhandle community for a march and rally at the Florida Capitol on Friday at 11 a.m., the day before the new immigration law takes effect. So far she’s gotten 200 yeses from family, friends and community members.

With what is viewed as the nation’s toughest state law against undocumented immigrants set to take effect Saturday, opponents are organizing demonstrations and work stoppages across the state to underscore its impact on families and the Florida economy. Employers in the agriculture, landscaping, construction and restaurant industries have been complaining about workers fleeing the state rather than face the potential penalties imposed by the new law, pushed by Gov. Ron DeSantis, now a Republican presidential contender.

Starting Saturday, the federal database, E-Verify, must be used by companies with 25 or more employees to check the legal status of any new hire.

It also invalidates out-of-state driver’s licenses issued to undocumented workers and makes it a felony to use false identity documents to get employment.

Campaigning:DeSantis’ immigration plan calls for restricting asylum, ending birthright citizenship. DeSantis stepped up his attack earlier this week, unveiling immigration policies he’d enact from the White House that included a pledge to somehow end the constitutional guarantee of citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants born in the United States.

He called the Biden administration’s difficulty in securing the border with Mexico “humiliating as a country,” and his immigration plan expands on the wall-building approach advanced by former President Donald Trump, who remains the clear frontrunner for the 2024 GOP nomination.

“I call this the anti-Florida bill,” said Rep. Johanna Lopez, D-Orlando, during a call Wednesday with opponents of the measure.

“Just last week, our hoteliers came to Washington to talk about how they’re losing employees and then construction, we’ve seen them losing workers,” said U.S. Rep.

“These are Florida’s top industries, tourism and agriculture, in particular, and the construction industry – this is going to affect affordable housing in a key way, and it’ll also affect infrastructure.”. “And for what.

Rubi and her family are documented, but she has family members who aren’t.

It affects all of us,” she added. On a hot summer morning, after stepping out the front door of her home and pulling on her brown work boots, she walked across acres of green grass to feed her family’s goats and cows.

The family bought the land and the house off of a two-lane road in rural Gadsden County five years ago. They used to grow watermelons, Sandoval said.

About 100 immigrant workers came to the event. This law has galvanized many in the Latino community in Chattahoochee, Gretna and Quincy, farm communities in the Florida Panhandle that have relied on immigrant labor for decades, Sandoval said.

“My parents have been living here many years. My uncles have been living here many years, and how do they pay us like this.

They’re not criminals. They just came to work and to give their kids a better life, and then they just want to take us out like that.”.

This week marks article #9 in my series on redistricting possibilities across Florida. Each week I will look at an area of Florida to discuss redistricting implication.

The goal of this series is to take a look at different areas in Florida and see how the legislative lines may end up. These articles will focus on how lawmakers may draw districts to accommodate changing populations.

I will also, at times, examine what efforts to gerrymander a region will look like. After the 2012 gerrymandering was discovered by a Florida Court, I believe it is appropriate to treat legislative intent with some healthy skepticism.

I highly recommending reading my History of Florida Redistricting series – as many mandates and norms we have in our maps are a product of that history. Prerequisite reading is absolutely my 2022 Primer Article – which covers which districts are under-populated and what the racial benchmarks are.

Lets continue this series by looking at the southeast Florida state senate region.

On November 29th, the State House released their first draft maps. I discussed the gerrymandering of the Congressional map in this substack post.

Both plans give the GOP a decent advantage in the chamber. Biden won just 50/120 districts in plan 8005, while he got 52/120 in plan 8007.

In the races for Governor and Senator from 2018, the breakdowns were closer. The plans do give Republicans key advantages, namely with Democrats winning several very narrow races while the GOP has fewer “at risk” seats.

Plan 8005 is a more aggressive plan in different parts of the state. though there is some trade-off in different regions.

examining what these drafts (and any future drafts) are doing. This article will cover the plans for the Tampa region.

The specific focus is on the Hillsborough and Manatee county districts. where there is reason to believe partisan motives are guiding the lines.

Both plans have the same lines for HD’s 62, 63, 64, 65, 66, 71, and 72. The primary debate between the two plans is over the eastern Hillsborough region.

For those of you familiar with Tampa Bay’s historic house districts, you will have no doubt noticed a major change. In a November article, I covered the history of HD-70, the African-American district that stretched from St Pete to Sarasota.

Well this year all the drafts end the St Pete to Sarasota lines. The new HD-62 is the successor, but it goes from St Pete to southern Tampa.

You can see how the progression of the district has gone over time. Its 2012 borders were similar to 2002.

I touched on some of the partisan back-and-forth about HD-70 in my November article. Many Democrats claimed the lines were designed to prevent a democratic district in Sarasota.

In that same article, I talked about the growth in the diverse, and democratic, suburbs along I-75 south of Tampa. I wondered how Republicans might try to crack or pack Democrats to stave off losses.

Between that packing maneuver, and some careful cracking, the lines just so happen to nicely cut up Democratic growth along I-75. The partisan breakdown of these plans is below.

Plan 8007’s biggest differences to 8005 is that it creates a deep-red 68 while allowing 67 to remain more solidly Democratic. Both plans have HD69 neck-and-neck.

Plan 8005 follows a gerrymandering idea I brought up as a possibility in my November article. The path there is simple, grab some of the I-75 Democrats, then pair them with deep-red rural eastern precincts.

The drafts follow this formula. plus they have the packing I didn’t do.

My firm believe is that this new version of HD-62 is designed to pack Democratic voters, NOT adhere to minority voter concerns.

That is not the case however. African-American voters are likely contained in HD’s 62 and 63.

As previously discussed, this map maintains the current status quo of two black-performing districts and a Hispanic-performing seat as well. All thee of these seats are heavily Democratic.

As I discussed in my Tampa Bay article, another diverse district could be drawn in the southern Hillsborough area. In the plan I drafted below, I drew a seat, HD65, that was solidly Democratic and almost 50% black in a primary.

And considering the growth in the area is diverse, the district very likely would continue to grow more diverse over the decade. Of course drawing this would mean four solidly Democratic non-white districts instead of three.

So if these house drafts are getting rid of HD-70s tale, which connected the non-white, largely black, voters down the I-75 corridor of Manatee County, what district are these voters now in. Well, for Manatee alone, they could be in any one of three districts.

which cut the non-white population between three seats. While keeping these voters together would not be enough for a minority district, it is incredibly bad form considering this was a community that has been part of a minority district for decades.

For those unfamiliar, a dummymander is when a party tries to draw lines to gerrymander a region, but they instead accidently create a map that is worse for them than they expected. There are histories of both parties attempting gerrymanders that backfired.

The reason Hillsborough house districts are looked at as a potential dummymander are that they might be “too greedy.” The plans, especially 8005, aim to keep southeastern Hillsborough red. The biggest issues revolve around districts 69 and 70.

Part of this swing was voters flipping from 2020. a common sight in many of the suburbs.

This area saw some of the largest growth in votes cast from 2016 to 2020. something I covered here.

Note, however, this isn’t the % swing. This is raw vote swing.

The lines around districts 69, 62, and 70 really work to divide up the large blocks of Democratic growth in the southern Hillsborough corridor. However, this is a risk for Republicans with 70 and 69.

One of the districts is already tied, the other has rapidly moved into single-digits (similar story in both plans). Arguably for Republicans, using the plan I offered earlier, where I create a potential third black-access district, would be the safer route.

Instead of sacrificing one seat, they risk long-term losing two. They be fine in 2022 as that midterm is likely to be red, but 2024 and onward are less certain.

Florida football began spring practice on Saturday without a wide receivers and tight ends coach and with a defensive coordinator on his first week on the job. But Florida coach Billy Napier sounded confident that the two position groups will be able to navigate through the situation until the new position coaches are hired.

Zoned air conditioning allows you to easily control the temperatures within individual rooms in your home. Most houses have one thermostat controlling a central air conditioning system that determines how cold or warm an entire home will be.

For example, if you have a room with a lot of direct sunlight, you may want to keep that room a little cooler than a room without windows or with indirect sunlight. Conversely, storage rooms may need to be kept at a slightly higher temperature than the rest of your house during colder months.

Once you’ve separated your house into at least two different zones, a licensed HVAC professional will outfit each zone with its own programmable thermostat and install duct dampers to automatically vent and release hot or cold air into your home. Each individual thermostat is linked to a central control module that allows you to control each zone with just a few quick adjustments and settings.

According to the Florida Climate Center of Florida State University, summer temperatures in Florida can range between 73° F and 95° F in a single day. That’s a 22-degree difference from just before sunrise to the hottest part of the afternoon.

What are some best practices when it comes to splitting your home into individual zones and keeping everything at the temperature you decide.

Florida gets hot, especially in July and August. If you’re considering zoned air conditioning, the first thing you need to keep in mind is how the sun is currently interacting with your home.

Depending on your answers, you could group rooms together into a specific zone that either needs to be cooler because it gets a lot of direct sunlight, or warmer because it’s already shaded. Most homes in Florida don’t have basements, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t multi-story homes.

Maybe your first floor is relatively cool, but when you go upstairs you feel the room start to get a little stuffy. That’s perfectly normal for a central air conditioning unit that’s treating all rooms the same.

That would offset the naturally hotter temperatures on your upper floors. With zoned air conditioning, you can easily set different temperatures for different rooms in your house.

That means the system is switching on and off less frequently, saving you money. In addition, zoned air conditioning reduces the workload on your system’s compressor and air handler, regulating the amount of energy each is doing throughout the day and reducing wear and tear.

Whenever you see pictures of the pyramids in Egypt, you probably wonder how they could possibly have been constructed without modern tools. Well, you don’t have to travel to the Nile to see such wonders on a smaller yet still dramatic scale.

Here, stones weighing up to 30 tons were hand-hewn from pits on the property and some were raised over 25 feet in the air. And all this was accomplished by a 5-foot, 100-pound man with a fourth-grade education.

Since his work on his castle began in 1923, visitors have been asking, “How did he do it. ”.

At the age of 26, Ed was living in his homeland of Latvia and was engaged to Agnes Scuffs. He was very happy until the 16-year-old girl jilted him the day before their wedding (or so the story goes).

He ended up in the Pacific Northwest where he worked as a lumber jack. But he still couldn’t forget his beloved Sweet 16, as he called Agnes.

In 1918, he moved to Florida City where the Moser family nursed him and offered him a job. They also sold him an acre of land on which to live.

By quarrying and carving huge chunks of oolite, a type of limestone that’s common in Florida, he began creating a monument to his lost love (or at least the idea of her). Apparently, he hoped his work would dazzle her with his devotion in case she ever showed up.

Of course, Ed was not going to leave his memories or monuments to Agnes behind. Working alone and at night, he secretively loaded all of his carvings onto a flatbed truck trailer for the move.

It was either a farmer with a tractor who pulled the trailer or a 15-year-old boy named Orval Irwin who got $2 a trip to drive his truck back and forth loaded with Ed’s treasures. Regardless, the trip to the new Homestead location was 10 miles north and the move took three years.

When Ed realized he could make money by offering tours of his Coral Castle for 25 cents a person, he sold seven acres of his land for the creation of Dixie Highway. That assured him the roadway would run past his location as it does to this day.

He never heard from Agnes. the park was later sold and renamed the Coral Castle.

There’s also a recording of Sweet 16 in which Idol uses the first few minutes to explain the story behind the song. Today if you visit the Coral Castle, here are some of the remarkable things you will see.

At the Homestead location, Ed built eight-foot-high stone walls to protect the works within. For the walls, he hand-cut stones weighing almost six tons each.

The walls remain perfectly balanced to this day. Stairways to the top of the walls gave him a view over the top so he could see who was approaching.

At the time, Ed called his new location in Homestead the Rock Gate Park. It’s named after an eight-foot-high gate that Ed carved from a nine-ton stone.

It worked perfectly for 50 years. And then in 1986 when it stopped rotating, men came in with a crane to take it apart.

The bearing had rusted and that caused the gate to malfunction. But once the workmen had it apart, they never got it back as precisely as Ed had it originally.

The first story of the stone structure in a corner of the castle houses a display of about 30 percent of Ed’s homemade tools. These were made from virtually indestructible Dade pine, truck/car parts plus other recycled items found on the property.

Upstairs is Ed’s bedroom where he slept on a mattress suspended from the ceiling. This protected him from the creepy crawlies.

But no one is allowed to climb the 16 steps (yes, in homage to his Sweet 16) to see the upper floor, probably for safety reasons. A 5,000-pound chunk of stone carved into a rocker sits atop a stone pedestal.

Waiting for Agnes, his queen, Ed carved two large thrones and a child-sized one. The fourth and most uncomfortable looking chair in this area is called the mother-in-law chair.

It’s two rockers in one that were carved side-by-side but facing in opposite directions. A couple could sit and talk and rock without really looking at each other.

Listed in the Guinness Book of World Records, this 5,000-pound table is shaped like a heart with a built-in planter for flowers. Ed wanted to be sure Agnes would always have flowers.

This table shaped like Florida is surrounded by 1,000-pound rocking chairs. It is said that Ed liked to set all the chairs rocking at one time.

Clearly Ed was no cartographer. Here is where Ed is said to have cooked a dozen hot dogs at a time that he sold for two cents each.

An old truck’s rear axle differential is hung by a chain over the heat of the barbecue pit. The casing opens and Ed would place the food inside before closing it and letting his food sizzle.

Ed dug by hand to reach the water table. He didn’t have to go far until he hit the Biscayne Aquifer providing running water to this day.

A carved wheel of rock rolls across the top of the stairs to protect his water supply. Oversized carvings of Saturn, the Moon, Venus and Mars add to the mysticism of the place.

It had Spanish subtitles and was shot at the Coral Castle. Ed’s carvings of Saturn and the Moon plus his water well are prominently featured.

Three chairs are placed at different spots in the Coral Castle so they catch the sun throughout the day. This assured Ed that he could get good light to read whenever he found time to sit down.

Perhaps he worked at night for secrecy or because it was cooler. However, it does seem that Ed created an AC generator that powered two lightbulbs.

When he needed light to work, he used kerosene lanterns. Weighing 30 tons and rising 25 feet in the air as well as descending six feet into the ground, this is one of the largest structures on the property.

Its inscription celebrates this fact by designating when the stone was carved, when it was moved and when Ed was born. Look through the hole in the wall that lines up with the hole atop a 25-foot-tall megalith that weigh 22 tons.

Depending on what quadrant of the upper hole the star appears in tells you the season. Although this is called a telescope, it’s not.

The Coral Castle’s accurate sundial tells the day, month and season/solstices as well as accurate time from 9 a.m. to.

Guess Ed was off the clock after that. Also of interest, he didn’t take daylight savings into account so you may have to add an hour.

A number of these were discovered in 1966 when the electric company was laying conduit and found that the ground under the surface was softer than that on top. This led them to dig more carefully and they discovered five quarries where Ed cut his rock.

About a third of his tools are on display in the tool room on the first floor of the castle tower (See Item 3 above). In the parking lot, you may find buses.
