Amazon store cards vs. Amazon Visa credit cards comparison [1]

Amazon store cards, issued by Synchrony Bank, are store-only cards that solely work at Amazon and, as such, might offer rewards only for Amazon purchases.

This means that they could offer rewards on Amazon and non-Amazing spending.

We prefer Amazon Visa credit cards, especially the Prime Visa, as they offer more versatility and enable rewards earning on spending at any retailer that accepts Visa cards. They also come with additional benefits like travel perks and purchase protection.

It can get confusing talking about Amazon store cards or Amazon Visa credit cards as a whole because each category actually includes two different cards for a total of four cards. Where it gets more confusing, though, is that you can only apply for the Amazon.com Store Card or the Amazon Visa credit card.

To get the Amazon Prime Store Card or the Amazon Visa Prime credit card, you have to already have the standard Amazon Store Card or Amazon Visa credit card as well as an eligible Amazon Prime membership. This will qualify you for an automatic update to the Prime version of each card.

If you’re approved for the Amazon Store Card and don’t have a Prime membership, you’ll end up with the non-Prime Amazon.com Store Card, which doesn’t offer any earning potential. If you’re approved for the Amazon Visa credit card and don’t have a Prime membership, you’ll get the non-Prime version, which offers fewer rewards and benefits.

The Amazon Store Card and Amazon Prime Store Card are two cards offered by Amazon and Synchrony Bank. They provide a way for frequent Amazon customers to pay for their purchases from Amazon.com and access financing options.

The Amazon Store Card is a no-annual-fee store card that offers financing for purchases made on Amazon.com.

Its drawbacks include:. The Amazon Prime Store Card is similar to the Amazon Store Card but is exclusive to Amazon Prime members, and it helps them earn rewards on their purchases.

Its benefits include:. Its drawbacks include:.

They enable you to earn rewards on your purchases at Amazon and elsewhere, as you can use them anywhere Visa is accepted.

You can only use Amazon store cards at Amazon.com, which means that you won’t be able to use them at any other online store or physical merchant.

This means that you can use these credit cards in the U.S. and abroad, and you don’t have to worry about foreign transaction fees either, as both Amazon Visa credit cards don’t charge them.

Winner: Amazon Visa credit cards since you can use them in more places than Amazon store cards.

The Amazon Visa helps you earn 3% cash back at Amazon.com, Whole Foods Market, and on Chase Travel purchases. 2% cash back at restaurants and gas stations, and on local transit and commuting.

The Amazon Prime Visa helps you earn 5% cash back at Amazon.com, Whole Foods Market, and on Chase Travel purchases. 2% cash back at restaurants and gas stations, and on local transit and commuting.

Winner: Amazon Visa credit cards since they help you earn rewards at more places than Amazon.com.

The Amazon Visa helps you earn a $50 Amazon gift card upon approval of credit card application.

Winner: Tie. Amazon store cards and Amazon Visa credit cards both help you earn Amazon gift cards of varying values upon approval.

The Amazon Prime Store Card enables you to redeem your rewards toward Amazon purchases or in the form of statement credits.

Winner: Amazon Visa credit cards since they offer more redemption options for the rewards you earn.

The two Amazon Visa credit cards also offer financing options for certain Amazon.com purchases. But they also offer additional perks, including:.

If these cards don’t seem like the best fit for you, there are other Amazon card options from other credit card issuers. These include:.

The Amazon store cards can be used only for Amazon purchases, whereas the Amazon Visa cards can be used anywhere Visa cards are accepted. In addition, the Amazon Visa cards have more benefits than the Amazon store cards, including different types of travel insurance and purchase protections.

You likely need a fair credit score to qualify for the Amazon.com Store Card, but the Amazon Visa typically requires a good credit score. A 580 FICO Score would be considered fair and a 670 FICO Score would be considered good.

However, it doesn’t earn you rewards unless you have an Amazon Prime membership.

Amazon credit cards can make sense if you frequently shop on Amazon. But depending on your shopping habits, you might get better value from a more versatile credit card like the Chase Freedom Flex℠ or Citi Double Cash® Card, which are often included as two of the best rewards credit cards available.

Drawbacks of the Amazon card [2]

Amazon this week unveiled a new secured credit card with Synchrony Bank, aimed at customers with bad or no credit history. The card – called the Amazon Prime Store Card Credit Builder – requires a refundable security deposit, has no annual fee and offers Prime members 5% back on Amazon.com purchases.

The card also features installment and special financing options on certain purchases. It’s also the first of its kind, said Ted Rossman, an industry analyst at CreditCards.com.

“But I’ve never seen a retailer offering one.”. Learn more: Best credit cards of 2023.

In the U.S., 53 million people have no credit history and another 79 million have subprime credit, according to data analytics company FICO. Fake chicken alert:Plant-based nuggets.

Improve your job:Beyond salary: How to negotiate benefits. “Secured cards are basically meant to be training wheels cards that people use when they’re just getting started in order to help them build credit,” Schulz said.

But the credit card can only be used for Amazon purchases, Schulz added. Synchrony, the issuing bank behind the card, will report your payment history to the three national credit bureaus: TransUnion, Equifax and Experian.

Auto news:Ford’s 2020 Explorer and Escape expected to lead explosion of new car models. “The program puts credit in the hands of people in a responsible way while giving customers access to tangible benefits such as tools to improve credit,” Angie Hu, a spokesperson for Synchrony told USA TODAY.

“If you are somebody who keeps your balances low, pays your bills on time every time, then it is possible that you could graduate to a new card pretty quickly,” Schulz said. While Amazon’s new card overall is a good option for consumers, the card still comes with a relatively high APR of 28.24%, Rossman said.

“Store cards typically charge higher rates in large part because they’re easier to get,” Rossman said. Both analysts said consumers need to be especially wary of the special financing with deferred interest on purchases that Amazon promotes.

“If you buy something and you don’t pay it off within that six months or 12 or 24 months, then you will likely get a bill for any interest that would have accrued on that account since the purchase date,” Schulz said. Follow USA TODAY reporter Frances Yue on Twitter @FrancesYue_.

Other Amazon cards to consider [3]

We think it’s important for you to understand how we make money. It’s pretty simple, actually.

The money we make helps us give you access to free credit scores and reports and helps us create our other great tools and educational materials. Compensation may factor into how and where products appear on our platform (and in what order).

That’s why we provide features like your Approval Odds and savings estimates. Of course, the offers on our platform don’t represent all financial products out there, but our goal is to show you as many great options as we can.

3.5 out of 5. From cardholders in the last year.

But there’s a catch: You must be an Amazon Prime member to apply for the card, which costs $139 per year (or $14.99 per month) for a nonstudent membership. Of course, that $139 goes toward more than just maintaining your card each year.

If you’re already an Amazon Prime member, then the cost isn’t a concern. But if you’re considering signing up just so that you can apply for the card, think about the cost carefully.

Cardholders who cancel their Amazon Prime membership can keep the card, but they earn lower cash back rates in certain categories. The number of points you can earn with the Amazon Prime Visa depends on where you shop.

But it’s worth noting that you have other options for redemption, like cash back, gift cards and travel. In these cases, $1 of rewards is equal to 100 rewards points, and vice-versa.

That makes this card more versatile than many store-branded credit cards, which usually require that you use your rewards only at the store and its affiliates. Similarly, while other cards offer 5% cash back on purchases, they may switch which stores or categories you’ll earn with throughout the year and limit how much you can earn.

Plus, Amazon sells a wide variety of products. Some store-branded or retail credit cards are only accepted at the associated store, and possibly with other affiliated brands.

The Amazon Prime Visa has an APR of 19.49% – 27.49% on purchases and balance transfers. A high APR isn’t a concern if you pay your bill on time and in full each month.

We don’t recommend using credit cards for purchases you can’t afford to pay off by your due date, but the APR is still a consideration if you have to cover emergency expenses that don’t easily fit into your budget. There are a few more details that might help you decide if the Amazon Prime Visa is a good fit for you.

You can only use the two store cards on Amazon.com. The other Amazon Visa card is similar to the Amazon Prime Visa in that you can use it elsewhere, but it doesn’t require an Amazon Prime membership.

Also, know that you’ll be considered only for the card you apply for, so be sure to apply directly for the Amazon Prime Visa if that’s the card you want. Even if you’re not the main Prime accountholder, you might qualify if you have Prime benefits that someone shares with you via an Amazon Household (which allows you to share Prime benefits between members of the same household, including up to two adults, four teens and four children).

If you choose to remove the card from your Amazon account, you’ll no longer earn 5% back on Amazon or Whole Foods Market purchases. You can relink the card to get the higher rate back, though.

The good news is that there are lots of options. On Amazon.com, you can redeem your points to pay for part or all of your eligible purchase.

You can then choose the dollar amount you want to cover using your points. Using your points this way gets you a redemption value of $1 per 100 points.

The redemption value may vary for other types of redemptions, but 100 points also equals $1 for Amazon.com, travel, gift cards and cash back. If you do most of your household shopping on Amazon.com and grocery shopping at Whole Foods, the Amazon Prime Visa could be a match.

But the rewards probably won’t be worth it if you don’t think you’d get much use out of an Amazon Prime membership or you’d wind up carrying a balance from month to month. Make sure you can afford to pay off your card on time and in full each month, and don’t get tempted to make more (or costlier) purchases just because you’ll earn bonus points.

It might make sense to keep a travel rewards credit card in your wallet for when you’re booking travel or you’re away from home. The Amazon Prime Visa isn’t a perfect fit for everyone.

Rewards and Benefits [4]

Amazon is the virtual store that has everything. Place your order today and you can have it as early as tomorrow.

The Prime Signature Visa is similar to its alternative co-branded card, named the Amazon Signature Visa credit card. Both can be used anywhere Visa is accepted and are backed by Chase Bank, a subsidiary of JPMorgan Chase, which handles all revolving credit services and issues.

The card can be used anywhere that accepts Visa. It offers 5% cash back on all items purchased on Amazon, at Whole Foods markets, and at Amazon Fresh, as well as rewards on everyday purchases.

Cardholders may also select a card design featuring either Amazon or Whole Foods.

These rewards and rebates can be substantial. You earn:.

Let’s say you bought an item on Amazon for $20. You would earn a 5% rebate (or 100 cents), which would become 100 points.

Prime members also get an extra 10% or more cash back on select items. These offers are for a limited time only.

Here’s how it works. Let’s say you bought an item on Amazon for $20.

Every 100 points are worth $1. Your points are available as soon as they are processed as a discount at checkout.

There is no annual fee, no foreign transaction fees, no earning cap, and your points never expire.

However, the vetting process goes through Chase Bank, which authorizes and administers the financial logistics and the approval process.

Conversely, if your application isn’t approved instantly, Chase will inform you about your status after reviewing your credit history. This takes approximately two to four weeks.

Your credit score will determine whether or not you can add the Amazon store card or the Amazon Signature Visa to your wallet. Your credit score is what virtually every lender uses to determine your creditworthiness.

Unlike the Amazon store card, which only requires fair credit, the Amazon Signature Visa cards (Prime member or non-member) both require a higher credit score because they are Visa credit cards.

You can expect to use your Amazon credit card anywhere that takes Visa. This means you can use it anywhere in the U.S.

Unlike store cards that are tied to use at a specific retailer, a Visa card connected to Amazon is a regular credit card in many ways.

Amazon offers two store-only cards, similar to its credit cards, as the Amazon Prime store card offers its Prime member more perks. Synchrony Bank issues the Amazon Store Card and the Amazon Prime Store Card, and the cards are useful if you are a frequent Amazon shopper.

If you don’t want or don’t qualify for either of the Amazon Signature Visa cards, the Amazon or Prime store cards may be a viable option for saving money on your Amazon purchases. Amazon store cards are not accepted at Whole Foods markets, unlike the Amazon Prime Visa Signature and the Amazon Rewards Signature Visa.

When you are approved for an Amazon store card, you receive a $60 gift card from Amazon, which is a bit less than the $200 gift card you receive for opening an Amazon Prime Visa card. The Amazon store card’s reward program is not as robust as Signature Visa card, but it does offer introductory financing opportunities for new cardholders.

The Amazon Signature Visa card is another alternative if you don’t have a Prime membership but want the convenience and the benefits of an Amazon Visa credit card. The Amazon Signature Visa is nearly identical in its perks and terms and conditions to the Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card, with one exception, if you are not a Prime member, you only reap a 3% reward when you shop on Amazon and at Whole Foods.

Unlike many credit cards, there is no introductory APR on the Amazon Prime Visa Signature Card. The annual percentage rate (APR) on your card depends on your credit history.

Balance transfers have the same APR as purchases instead of the higher one many cards impose.

You have 21 days after the end of the billing cycle to pay the balance in full to avoid any interest charges. The late payment fee is up to $39, depending on your card’s balance.

Cash advances cost $5 or 4%, whichever is greater.

You must be age 18 or older to apply for the card, and credit limits are based on the applicant’s credit.

A co-branded card like this provides not only access to rewards but a line of credit, and you have the flexibility of being able to use the card anywhere that takes Visa.

You can make payments on your Amazon Prime Visa Signature credit card through the Chase website or on the mobile app. You can also mail in a check when you receive your Amazon Visa card statement every month.

If you manage your credit wisely, it can help you improve your credit over time just like any other credit card. This means using the card and paying off the balance or making the minimum payments before the due date.

However, you will be required to purchase an Amazon Prime membership ($139 a year) if you want to open an Amazon Prime Visa Signature credit card account. Both cards are co-branded by Chase and offer the same terms and conditions but slightly different rewards.

Both cards come without an annual fee, but a Prime membership costs $139 a year. Although the card is only available to Prime members, the rewards structure of either Amazon Visa card might make it useful even for people who only shop at Amazon infrequently.

Rewards are most valuable to people who don’t carry a balance, as you can quickly pay more in interest charges than the benefits are worth if you don’t pay it off. Second, it may be wise not to make purchases solely to earn rewards.

If you are interested in owning a Visa card and are an avid Amazon.com and Whole Foods shopper, you may want to investigate opening this card.

There are exemptions? [5]

There’s exciting news for those of you with Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) or Health Savings Accounts (HSAs). Amazon has stepped up its game and is now accepting FSA and HSA cards as a payment method for eligible products.

To use your FSA or HSA card on Amazon, simply add it as a payment option in your account. Just remember, some HSA cards need to be registered as credit cards to ensure they are used solely for eligible products.

Amazon has got you covered with a complete list of eligible brands and products. They even label products with “FSA or HSA Eligible” disclaimers on their pages, making it easier for you to navigate.

Generally, you can use your FSA or HSA card for healthcare expenses like medical devices, first aid products, and even sunscreen. You can purchase items for your family or eligible dependents too.

Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) and Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) allow you to use a portion of your pre-tax salary to cover medical expenses. If you’re not sure if you have one, reach out to your employer or plan administrator for clarification.

Unfortunately, you need a prescription to purchase them with your FSA or HSA card, and Amazon doesn’t support this feature yet. However, you can use other payment methods on Amazon and request reimbursement from your plan administrator.

It’s worth checking with your employer or plan administrator to ensure you’re making the most of it. Lastly, if you encounter any issues with your FSA or HSA card, reach out to your employer or plan administrator for assistance.

Therefore, a Vanilla gift card is a great option for people not wishing to open a credit card or bank account. In addition, Vanilla gift cards are the best option for people trying to avoid the high-interest rates and other fees associated with traditional credit cards.

This is due to its range of benefits that position the card as a viable payment option. These benefits are:

The following are the quick steps to checking your Vanilla gift card balance: However, knowing that you can not spend more than the funds available on your Vanilla gift card on Amazon is important.

For instance, if you have a $100 Vanilla gift card, that means you can spend within a $100 budget on the store. This enables you to make a wise purchase than impulse buying.

You can use your Vanilla gift card as a payment option on the Amazon website and Amazon app. It is important to shop within the balance limit of your Vanilla card on Amazon.

You can learn how to activate your Vanilla card in this guide. A Vanilla gift card is one of the gift cards that expire.

Therefore, you must be wary of the expiration date of your card to prevent the event of expiration before using your card. You may lose the value of your card upon expiration, hence the need to use it on time to buy on Amazon.

This card is a good fit for consumers who do a lot of shopping at Amazon and Whole Foods because they can earn an unlimited 5% cash back on purchases there. Cardholders also earn some cash back on other purchases, with decent rates for restaurants and gas stations.

With the Prime Visa Credit Card, loyal Amazon and Whole Foods shoppers can get special rewards and perks with a credit card made just for them. This card is exceptional in its ability to reward customer loyalty, transforming your shopping at Amazon or Whole Foods into unrivaled cash-back rewards.

Yet, it’s important to consider your shopping habits. Those who seldom shop at either retailer might reap greater benefits from a card that aligns rewards with their frequent shopping destinations.

The Prime Visa Credit Card is a rewarding option for Amazon Prime members. Some of the card highlights include:

Here’s what new cardholders can expect: Unlike other credit card sign-up bonuses, this one does not require you to spend a certain amount of money with your new card.

Just make sure you avoid carrying a balance on the card, or you could be negating any benefits you receive from owning the card.

So this card is kind of a no-brainer since we now earn 5% back on all purchases (sometimes 6%). I don’t really shop at Whole Foods regularly, but if I did it would be even more of a reason to have this card.

If you have a Prime membership I can’t really think of a reason not to have this card.”.

Your rewards don’t expire as long as your account is open. Prime cardmembers can also earn 10% back or more on rotating products and categories at Amazon.com.

Your points are worth 1 cent apiece, regardless of how you use them, and you can opt for one of the following: While the redemption rate is the same for all options, we recommend not using your points to pay at checkout because you won’t be earning the 5% back on the amount that you’d get if you were using your card.

But if you used your points, you wouldn’t get the extra $5. So while it’s convenient, skip using your points to pay for Amazon.com purchases during the checkout process.

Here’s what you can expect: However, these benefits will be best enjoyed by those who can capitalize on them — frequent Amazon shoppers, Prime members, and Whole Foods patrons.

“It’s remarkable how much I can earn with the Prime Visa because I can buy nearly everything on Amazon. Between Prime Video, groceries from Amazon Fresh or Whole Foods, and everyday items like home goods and tools, the 5% cashback adds up quickly.

My wife and I took advantage of them to upgrade to newer iPhone models. This is one of the few ways to get a deal on Apple products.

While the Prime Visa Credit Card holds considerable value for frequent Amazon and Whole Foods shoppers, it may not meet everyone’s expectations or needs. Here are some potential disadvantages of the card.

If you don’t have an Amazon Prime membership, though, you will need to pay the $139 annual fee to join, which may feel steep if you wouldn’t otherwise join Prime. The Prime Visa Credit Card has a 19.49% – 27.49% (Variable) APR based on creditworthiness.

Chase will determine your APR during the approval process. However, APRs can fluctuate periodically as a credit card issuer adjusts its rates to the market.

Here are some you might encounter: The card issuer, Chase, does not publicly disclose the exact credit score required to qualify for the card.

According to the FICO scoring model, this translates to a credit score range of 670 to 800.

Other factors that influence your decision-making include your income, existing debt, payment history, and overall financial stability. The Prime Visa Credit Card is, without a doubt, one of the best store credit cards on the market.

Furthermore, just because you are an Amazon Prime member today does not guarantee that you will be one next year. Fortunately, there are a few cash-back credit cards that may be better suited for your household spending.

Mastercard gift cards are accepted virtually anywhere that accepts credit or debit card transactions, and that includes online retailers. If you or someone you know is a habitual online shopper, then you should be delighted to know that Mastercard gift cards can be used to complete online transactions at your favorite businesses.

In an effort to better understand the mechanics of using a Mastercard gift card for online shopping, we are going to address how exactly it works and everything you need to know before making your first online purchase.

Using your Mastercard gift card to complete online transactions is a piece of cake. Similar to debit and credit card transactions, you will need to enter the accurate card information when you select a payment method during online checkout.

The Mastercard gift card information you will need to have on hand includes: So long as you have all of this information at your disposal, you should not expect to encounter any difficulties while shopping online.

Your payment may be declined if you do not have the funds necessary to complete the transaction.

This means that you will need to have an available balance that is at least 20% more than the total cost of the transaction. Anything less and you may not be able to complete the transaction using your Mastercard gift card.

For the billing address section, be sure to fill in your name and address accurately.

You can use a Mastercard gift card just about anywhere, including your favorite online shops. With so much shopping potential packed into one card, there is basically no limit as to what you can buy.

Online, phone, and mail-order merchants based in the United States that accept Mastercard will be able to take your Mastercard gift card as payment. Purchases at merchants based outside of the United States may be restricted.

Here are some examples where you may face restrictions on your Mastercard gift card: If you spend a lot of time browsing the near-infinite catalog of items available on Amazon and consider yourself a devoted customer of the brand, then you are probably wondering if you can use your Mastercard gift card to make purchases from the massive online retailer.

Mastercard gift cards can be used just like normal payment methods when shopping on Amazon. Once you select all of the items you would like to buy and ensure everything you wish to purchase is in your virtual shopping cart, you can proceed to the payment screen where you must choose a payment method that works for you.

In order to pay using a Mastercard gift card, you must add a new card to your account by inputting all of the relevant gift card information including the gift card number, security code, and expiration date.

One great solution you can accomplish in no time at all is transferring your Mastercard gift card funds onto your Amazon account. It’s a quick and simple way to use up the remaining Mastercard gift card balance.

Do you have multiple Mastercard gift cards with different balances. Instead of using each gift card separately to pay for a purchase, combine your Mastercard gift card balance for a sum of money to spend on Amazon.

Adding funds to your Amazon account from various Mastercard gift cards makes keeping track of your finances way more easy and makes paying for your orders a whole lot more convenient for you. It can be hard to remember to use the couple remaining dollars and cents leftover on depleted Mastercard gift cards, but transferring those funds to your Amazon accounts means you will have those funds on hand the next time you go to make a purchase.

Consolidating prepaid gift card balances is a great way to ensure you use the gift card in its entirety and lets you shop at a retailer you love.

Since you really do not want to be put in a situation where you are left without a means to pay, it is important to keep tabs on your Mastercard gift card balance by checking it often.

You will want to make sure you have your Mastercard gift card information on hand so that you can accurately enter it to complete a balance check.

If you turn your gift card over to the back side, you will find a toll-free customer service number you may call in order to activate or check the balance of your Mastercard gift card. The official Mastercard number you can dial is 1-833-623-4266.

Once you have dialed the phone number, you will be asked to provide your gift card account number (16 digits), security code (3 digits), and the expiration date. After this information is provided, you will hear an automated message with your current gift card balance.

To delete an unwanted payment method using your desktop, open a web browser on your computer and launch the Amazon site. Sign in to your account on the site.

On the “Edit Payment Method” window, in the bottom-left corner, click “Remove From Wallet.”. Confirm your choice by clicking “Confirm Remove” in the prompt.

Additional Benefits & Perks of the Amazon Visa Signature Cards [11]

It seems like every store has it’s own credit card nowadays, including Amazon. But is the Amazon Rewards Visa Signature card right for you.

From card benefits and program basics to fees, drawbacks, and more, we’re outlining everything you need to know in this in-depth review. There is currently only 1 Amazon-branded Visa Signature Card by Chase — Prime Visa card.

As you can see, the main difference between these cards is in the benefits. Prime members get an extra bump up to 5% back at Amazon.com and Whole Foods, which is a nice little bonus if you’re already paying a yearly Prime Membership fee (not to be confused with the annual credit card fee, which neither of these cards has).

It’s UNLIMITED — as opposed to other cards that may cap benefits at a certain spending level.

This is because technically, cardholders are not earning cash-back. Instead, this program uses the term “percent-back.”.

Thinking of your return in terms of earning percent-back rewards converted to points can get confusing. To simplify things, we’ll say each $1 of eligible purchases made with an Amazon Visa Signature Card equals a specific number of points.

For example, if you spent $200 at Whole Foods, you’d earn 1,000 points if you used your Prime Visa card, or 600 points if it was on the standard Amazon Rewards Visa. Your $50 fill-up at the tank would earn you 150 points regardless of which card you used, and that $20 you spent at the movies to catch the latest blockbuster would earn you 20 points.

Hot Tip: It’s important to note that the percent-back does NOT apply to purchases from merchants using Amazon Pay, purchases made on international Amazon retail sites (e.g. Amazon.ca, Amazon.co.uk, etc.), or international Whole Foods purchases.—Additionally, terms and conditions state percent-back is not earned via any other website operated by Amazon, i.e.

A Quick Note on Standard vs. Prime Account Benefits.

In the terms & conditions associated with these cards and their respective benefits, Amazon states the following: “If you switch Amazon.com accounts, use multiple Amazon.com accounts, or your card account is loaded into multiple Amazon.com accounts, then your card account may not automatically earn 5% Back and may instead earn 3% Back.

Special Promotions. The Amazon Visa Signature Cards intermittently offer cardholders ways to earn bonus points through the program or special promotions.

Once points have been accrued, cardholders can utilize them in a number of ways: A lot of cardholders redeem their points in this way, and it’s widely advertised as one of the card’s biggest perks.

However, let’s look at how to redeem for Amazon purchases if you choose to do so. When redeeming at Amazon.com, every 100 points in your account = $1.

You’ll see the total in your account, how much it equates to in cash, and have the ability to use that balance (or a portion of your balance) to apply to your purchase. Simply select your preferred option, then complete check-out as usual.

Because using your Amazon Rewards credit card on Amazon is where you reap the most benefits (remember that 5% back). When you use your points, Amazon’s not giving you 5% back on that part of your purchase.

Say you’re buying a new Kindle Paperwhite for $80, and you’re a Prime Visa card holder. Option 1: Use only rewards points.

Option 3: Use only your Prime Visa Card. Okay, okay…is saving $4 really worth it.

Especially since you probably got this card because you spend a lot on Amazon to begin with.

If you’d like to redeem your points for cash, the program gives you 2 options: Either option may be enacted once you reach a minimum of 2,000 points in your account.

Using your points to redeem for items on Amazon.com would mean you’re not earning rewards on that purchase. The program also allows cardholders to redeem their points for gift cards.

This appears to be the same return rate as opting for cash-back, so there’s not currently an incentive here to choose gift cards over cash-back.

When cardholders log into their account, click through to the rewards link, and then visit the travel section, they’re presented with a phone number to contact a Chase Travel Advisor. While Chase doesn’t elaborate on these redemption options, it does not appear that the Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Program points and Chase Ultimate Rewards are linked.

However, if the account status changes or if it is closed for misuse, fraudulent activity, failure to pay, bankruptcy, etc., the cardholder will immediately forfeit all their points. “Is it worth signing up for Amazon Prime to get the Prime Visa Card that comes with 5% vs.

The answer. It depends.

Strictly from a percent-back perspective, the math works out to a spending threshold of roughly ~$5,000 at Amazon and/or Whole Foods before you start reaping benefits that outweigh the $99 Prime membership fee. So if you’re spending more than $5,000 annually on the card, then yes it’s worth it to upgrade.

However, Amazon Prime comes with much more than just a 5% back benefit, which the math above doesn’t consider. Other money-saving perks include:

For example, if you watch just 1 Prime movie a month that otherwise would have cost you $5, you’re saving $60 over the course of a year. The above math also doesn’t take into account the $70 vs.

That additional $20 essentially cuts the membership fee down to $80. Bottom Line: If you’re likely to utilize additional benefits of Amazon Prime and generally spend a decent amount on Amazon throughout the year, then signing up for the Prime Visa Card and it’s 5% back option is likely worth it.

—If you don’t already have Prime, you don’t think you’ll utilize any of the extra perks, and you aren’t likely to spend over $5,000 on Amazon in a year, don’t sign up for Amazon Prime just to get the extra percent-back. Go with the standard Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card and its 3% back.

Travel-related perks: Visa Signature Luxury Hotel perks:

For more details related to these additional benefits, you can visit Amazon’s explanation of benefits page or read our review on Amazon Prime Visa Card benefits. You’ll be asked to sign in to your Amazon account before proceeding.

You may be approved instantly, or you may receive a message stating they need more time to review your application. Among other fine print terms, the program points out that the following qualifications are important:

In general, the consensus across many credit card review sites is that a “good” credit score is needed to secure either of these cards. However, each application is reviewed on an individual basis, and reports of approval have been verified from customers with credit scores in the mid-600s.

As this is a “store card,” it can only be used at Amazon.com — a major drawback for consumers who need a credit card for everyday purchases outside of Amazon. The main benefit of this card is.

Credit cards that offer instant card numbers [13]

If you’re looking to finance an emergency expense, such as a broken fridge or car repair, you may want fast access to a new credit card.

But if you apply for certain cards, you may receive an instant card number, allowing you to complete purchases right after approval. Instant credit cards are a great way to pay for unexpected expenses or new transactions without checking the mail everyday for your card.

It’s also important to note that you may only be able to use a portion of your credit limit while you wait for your physical card. Below, we’ll list credit cards that offer instant access, without waiting for the physical card to arrive in the mail.

However, certain types of cards offer instant card numbers, which we list below. All Amex cards have the ability to receive an instant card number once your identity is validated.

Take note that Amex co-branded cards may only be used with the brand until you receive your physical card. For instance, a temporary co-branded Delta Amex card may only be valid at Delta.

Terms apply. If you open a co-branded or store credit card at checkout (online or in-store) you can begin using your card right away.

Store cards can only be used at the retailer, but co-branded cards can be used anywhere the card is accepted. However, a temporary co-branded store card might only be accepted at the store, as is the case with the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi (see rates and fees).

There are exceptions to that rule, such as the Apple Card. New Apple cardholders receive access to the card instantly after approval and can load it to their Apple Wallet for immediate use anywhere Mastercard is accepted.

Find the best credit card for you by reviewing offers in our credit card marketplace or get personalized offers via CardMatch™. As you’ll notice from the cards mentioned above, instant card numbers primarily come with Amex cards, co-branded cards and store cards.

However, you may be able to get your new card sooner if you’re approved for a premium card. Many issuers provide expedited shipping for high-end cards or upon request for any card.

Before submitting your request, consider whether you really need the card ASAP and whether the fee is worthwhile. If it’s not, you can simply wait for it to arrive in the mail.

Amazon Prime Store Card vs. Prime Visa: At a glance [14]

The best credit cards for shopping on Amazon let users earn the top rewards rate on everything they buy from the online retailer and its associated brands, including Whole Foods. That said, there’s more than one Amazon credit card to consider, so you’ll need to do some research before you apply.

10-11, you’ll want to act fast. When it comes to store cards, that is those for use within a limited Amazon universe, Synchrony Bank offers the Amazon Store Card* and its counterpart for Amazon Prime members, the Amazon Prime Store Card*.

Both secured cards required a minimum security deposit of $100 to establish your line of credit. If you’re looking for a card to use for purchases with Amazon and beyond, Chase offers the Amazon Visa* (formerly known as the Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card) and the Prime Visa (formerly known as the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card).

Essentially, your card of choice will boil down to your credit score and whether you’re an Amazon Prime member. Here’s a quick guide to the various Amazon credit card options to help you choose the best one for your lifestyle.

The card application process will direct you to the card that matches your Prime status. In either case, being a Prime member is the best way to maximize your credit card rewards on Amazon purchases.

A big difference between the Synchrony Amazon cards and Chase Amazon cards is where you can use them. Synchrony’s Amazon cards are closed-loop credit cards, meaning you can only use them at a specific store or family of brands.

Chase’s Amazon cards, however, are open-loop cards, meaning you can use them anywhere Visa cards are accepted. This means you can use the Prime Visa for dining out, groceries, regular bills, miscellaneous spending and more in order to increase your rewards haul over time.

Typically, you can qualify for Synchrony’s Amazon store cards with a fair credit score (580 to 669). On the other hand, you’ll likely need at least a good credit score (670 to 739) to qualify for one of the Amazon Visa cards from Chase.

However, Chase’s Prime Visa also offers 5 percent back on Whole Foods purchases, Amazon Fresh purchases and Chase Travel purchases with an eligible Prime membership, as well as 2 percent back on restaurant, gas station and local transit and commuting purchases. All other spending earns 1 percent back.

Without a Prime membership, you don’t earn any rewards with Synchrony’s Amazon Store Card. Also, your rewards with the Amazon Prime Store Card are not as flexible as the ones you earn with Chase Amazon cards.

However, your Prime Visa and Amazon Visa rewards can be redeemed in many ways — cash back via bank deposit, statement credits for Amazon purchases or gift cards. You can also use rewards earned with the Prime Visa and Amazon Visa to book travel through Chase.com.

Synchrony’s Amazon store cards offer longer financing periods on Equal Monthly Payments purchases. With the store cards, you can get six, 12 or 24 months to pay off your purchase at a 0 percent APR:

Conversely, the Chase Prime Visa and Amazon Visa cards offer six or 12 months to pay off your purchase with no interest, with the following requirements: Once again, however, you have to forgo rewards on purchases when you apply these special financing offers.

Chase cardholders may also qualify. Note that the 29.99 percent variable APR on Synchrony’s Amazon store cards is fairly high compared to the average credit card interest rate and could come back to haunt you if you use the Special Financing option.

Whether you get a store credit card from Synchrony or a Chase credit card, we recommend you get the Prime version if it makes sense to do so. If your credit isn’t good enough to get a Chase credit card, consider one of the Synchrony Amazon cards — preferably the Prime version so you can earn rewards.

If your credit is good enough for a Chase card, the Prime Visa is certainly worth it. You can use the same spending strategy to cover your Prime membership cost with rewards, but in this case, you’ll have more spending options to earn rewards on.

Be sure to pay your balance in full each month to avoid interest charges and only purchase what you need. Amazon Prime Big Day Deals will be here before you know it, and you need to make sure you’re paying with the right credit card.

Whether you should get a store card or the Prime Visa depends on if you want to be able to use your card for other bills and spending, too. Other factors to keep in mind include the added perks you can get with the Prime Visa, as well as the credit score you’ll need to get approved.

Can you add a Visa gift card to Apple Wallet? [15]

If you’ve ever used Apple Wallet to conveniently store your credit cards, boarding passes, concert tickets, or transit cards in one place, you’ve experienced how easy your smartphone now makes it to check out (and check in) nearly anywhere that uses a contactless system.

While it is easy to add a gift card to Apple Wallet, it can be tricky to know if your gift card retailer is Apple Wallet-eligible. Apple Wallet no longer allows users to manually add a gift card directly into the app, however, you may be able to add a gift card to Apple Wallet through the retailer’s app or website.

Here’s what to know about what you can and can’t do if you want to add a gift card to Apple Wallet. Yes, you can add a gift card to Apple Wallet.

While you can check Apple’s list of Wallet-eligible apps to see the major gift card retailers that support this functionality, just know that this isn’t a complete list of all compatible retailers. (For example, we were able to add a T.J.Maxx gift card to Apple Wallet, which is not a listed retailer here.).

The other card balance that you have access to in your Apple Wallet is Apple Cash, which works a little like Venmo: You can put funds directly into your Apple Cash account, which can be sent to other people through Message or Wallet. You can also make purchases with Apple Cash wherever Apple Pay is accepted.

You will need to download the corresponding app for each brand and tap the “Add to Apple Wallet” badge to grant the app permission to do this. Additionally, if you’ve ever used Apple Pay at a store that uses a touchless point-of-sale system like Square, you may be prompted at checkout (or via push notification afterward) to opt into that store’s loyalty program on Apple Wallet without having to download a separate app.

According to Apple Wallet’s policy, “You can currently add eligible Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover credit cards offered in the U.S.”. You can add a Visa gift card to Apple Wallet the same way you would any other credit or debit card:

Keep in mind that the Visa gift card balance won’t display here, so you’ll need to keep track of how much is left to prevent your transaction from being declined. How to check out with Venmo on Amazon [16]

It’s handy for things like paying rent to your landlord or reimbursing your friend for dinner. In recent years, Venmo has expanded its usability to merchants, as well.

Venmo is officially an option when paying for your Amazon cart. It’s nice to see more flexibility in Amazon payment options, but they aren’t always a good idea.

Earn 5% back at Amazon.com, Amazon Fresh, and Whole Foods Market, and on Chase Travel purchases with an eligible Prime membership (earn 3% without an eligible Prime membership). Earn 2% back on restaurant, gas station, and local transit and commuting purchases, including rideshare.

19.49% – 27.49% Variable. Earn a $100 Amazon gift card.

The Amazon Prime Visa is a good choice if you’re already an Amazon Prime member — and do quite a bit of online shopping. It comes with decent benefits for a no-annual-fee credit card, and its earning rates are exceptional.

Here’s why. We’re focused here on the rewards and perks that come with each card.

When using a credit card, it’s important to pay your balance in full each month, make payments on time, and only spend what you can afford to pay.

You’re paying with either a checking account or debit card, and you want to add a layer of encryption to your purchase. By using Venmo as a middleman, Amazon won’t receive any of your account information such as your debit card or checking account number.

Here’s why: When you pay with your Venmo balance or a checking account, you won’t earn rewards on your purchase. You probably won’t earn rewards with your debit card, either — and even if you do, it’ll be the same rewards as had you paid directly with Amazon.

Besides the fact that paying with a credit card is generally much more secure than paying with a debit card or a checking account, you’ll be sure to earn something for your spending. Here are the best credit cards for Amazon purchases:

For example, the $0 annual fee Citi® Double Cash Card earns 1% back when you make a purchase and 1% back when pay off that purchase. That’s effectively 2% everywhere.

Instead of using your Venmo balance to make Amazon purchases, you’re much better off simply transferring that money to your bank account, using a rewards credit card for your Amazon cart, and then effectively using your Venmo balance to pay your credit card bill. The one possible development that might make Venmo a worthwhile option at Amazon checkout concerns the Venmo Debit Card.

We’ve seen offers as high as 6%. If at some point Amazon is featured as a Venmo Offer (far from a certainty), Venmo would become a viable option to Venmo debit card holders — but again, you’d still earn the same as if you had paid directly with Amazon.

You can then select Venmo as a one-time purchase or as your default payment method for subsequent Amazon purchases. You can pay with either your current Venmo balance, your attached bank account, or a debit card.

Amazon already allows you to pay with a debit card and a checking account — so the only real addition here is the ability to pay for your cart with your Venmo balance (money you’ve received from others). Venmo and Amazon have partnered up to allow users to pay for their online shopping with a Venmo balance, a bank account, or a debit card through Venmo.

Instead of making purchases with a payment method that won’t yield any return, pay Amazon directly with a rewards credit card instead.
