The earliest known stone inscription of the Ten Commandments sold for $850,000 – and a stipulation the owner must put the tablet on public display.

“The tablet’s significance is testament to the deep roots and enduring power of the Commandments that still form the basis of three of the world’s great religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam,” said David Michaels, director of ancient coins for Heritage Auctions.

The two-foot-square (0.18 square meter), 115-pound (52 kg) marble slab is inscribed in an early Hebrew script called Samaritan and most likely adorned a Samaritan synagogue or home in the ancient town of Jabneel, Palestine, which is now Yavneh in modern Israel, according to Michaels.

“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in Vain” was deliberately left off the list to keep the total number of Commandments to 10, according to scholars.

“The workmen who found it did not recognize its importance and either sold or gave it to a local Arab man, who set the stone into the threshold of a room leading to his inner courtyard, with the inscription facing up,” Michaels said.

“He immediately recognized its importance as an extremely rare ‘Samaritan Decalogue,’ one of five such known stone inscriptions that date to the late Roman-Byzantine era (300-640 CE) or just after the Muslim invasion of the seventh century CE,” added Michaels.

After recognizing its importance, Kaplan asked a noted archaeologist – Yitzhak Ben-Zvi, who would go on to become Israel’s second-longest serving president – to help him investigate its provenance. They published an academic paper that recounts the story of the stone’s discovery and provides background information about its historical context.

Kaplan eventually sold the stone to an American, Rabbi Saul Deutsch, who took it to the US and put it on display at his Living Torah Museum in Brooklyn, New York.

The IAA stipulated that the stone can be sold to a third party, but only on condition that it be placed on public display “where all can view it and enjoy.”. Rabbi Deutsch put the stone up for sale, along with more than 50 other “Bible-related historical artifacts” he owns, to fund an expansion of his Living Torah Museum, according to Michaels.

God gave us the Ten Commandments to teach us right from wrong. If everybody followed them, what a wonderful world it would be.

Paul put it this way: We all sin and “fall short” of God’s expectations. (Romans 3:23) So in addition to guiding us how to live, the commandments show us our need for forgiveness — which God graciously offers.

Does God’s grace let off the hook from trying to keep the Ten Commandments. By no means.

What’s this I hear about “The Law. “.

The “Law of Moses” usually refers to the 600+ “religious rules” found in the Old Testament which came after the Ten Commandments. Many of those laws were about how to worship, when and how to celebrate festivals, “clean and unclean” things and such.

As the story of Jesus’ disciples plucking grain on the Sabbath illustrates, some of those “laws” had become oppressive. Following on Jesus’ teachings, the Apostle Paul declared we are “free” from those kinds of laws and that it is “loving others (that) fulfills the law.” (Romans13:8).

And if you can’t remember all Ten, then just remember how Jesus and Paul made them even easier to remember and practice: LOVE. Each lesson in this set includes an activity to remember all ten of the commandments.

Some lessons dig into particular commandments. Now some people might think that it’s silly to teach kids about “killing or adultery,” but as you’ll soon see in the lessons, there are more ways to kill, cheat, and steal than by taking their life or stuff.

But the beauty of these commandments is that their meaning can be explored in many ways — and many of our lessons will do so. See the word studies at the end of this background for some interesting meanings.

In the Gospel this weekend (Mt 5:17-37), Jesus mentions the Ten Commandments in his teaching. Have you ever looked at images of the Ten Commandments and wondered about the various ways the numbers appear on the tablets: five and five, or three and seven, or four and six.

We all know the Exodus story (20:1-17) of Moses receiving the commandments from God. They are also called the Decalogue (“Ten Words” in Latin) and Aseret HaDibrot (“Ten Sayings” in Hebrew).

Meshulam Margaliot of the Bible department at the Bar-Ilan University in Tel Aviv, Israel, notes that it was common in the ancient world to make a copy of important contracts. One copy was kept by each party — in this case, God and his people.

The people’s copy also went in there because it was common to place the secondary party’s copy of a contract in the temple of their god. Moses’ people were the secondary party.

This leaves one other commandment: the one about your father and mother. Why, in Jewish tradition, is it placed on the same tablet as the commandments about God.

Rabbi Ronald Isaacs writes for “My Jewish Learning.” He addresses the placement of the command about one’s parents: “A dual structure can be seen in the Ten Commandments. Commandments one through four deal with human relationships to God.

The Fifth commandment, that of honoring one’s parents, forms a sort of bridge between the two.”. This parental command can thus be viewed as a lynch pin, something that keeps two parts working together.

God, besides being our creator, cares about us as a parent cares for their child. Parents ask obedience from children.

But good parents also want obedience to come from trust and love, not from fear or control. The same is true with God.

In Jewish numbering, honoring parents is the Fifth Commandment, and it is placed on the first tablet. If you, as a Catholic, hold the same Jewish view about God and parents, you put commandments one through four on the first tablet.

The rest (including parents) would go on the second. This is why you see tablets representing the Ten Commandments numbered with 3+7 or 4+6 or 5+5.

Jesus gave us that, and it only has two numbers: “Love the Lord your God” and “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Mk 12:30-31). When you reflect on it — 10, 5+5, 3+7, 4+6 or 1+1 — the Ten Words really add up to one word: love.

A set of the Ten Commandments Tablets isn’t something that everyone has lying around the house. But for ministry leaders, a set of Ten Commandments Tablets can be a neat prop to have on hand as a visual to a story or as a prop for a skit.

I am specifically sharing her version to demonstrate that this project is do-able for any skill level. She created this by herself from start to finish.

This process really is as easy as it seems. Begin by drawing a tablet shape on the corrugated cardboard with the pencil.

Use this one as a template to cut out a second tablet shape.

Paint with the gray paint. Let dry completely for 24 hours.

Turn over the cardboard. Paint this side of the tablet with the gray paint.

View the painting coverage to determine if the tablets need another coat of paint. Add this if desired, keeping in mind that they will need another 24 hours of drying time after each coat of paint.

Once you’re satisfied with the paint coverage, grab the permanent marker and write the commandments on the tablets. The first five will go on one tablet and the second five will go on the other.

For Michelangelo (1475–1564) and Andrea Mantegna (1431–1506) they still have sharp corners (see gallery), and are about the size found in rabbinic tradition. Later artists such as Rembrandt (1606–1669) tended to combine the rounded shape with a larger size.

According to the Talmud, each tablet was square, six tefachim (approximately 50 centimeters, or 20 inches) wide and high, and more a thicker block than a tablet, at three tefachim (25 centimeters, 10 inches) thick, though they tend to be shown larger in art.

We can only imagine what the Israelites were going through, three months after they’d been led out of Egypt. Six hundred thousand men, besides women and children, had witnessed their miraculous deliverance from the hand of Pharaoh.

(Exodus 16:2-5). God’s timing in waiting until the third month to give the commandments was no coincidence.

The third month also parallels the New Testament Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit came upon the first church in Acts 2. The Israelites were God’s chosen people, and by setting forth His commandments, He was declaring an everlasting covenant with them that would later be fulfilled in Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection.

It is often assumed that when God spoke the commandments in Exodus chapter 20, it was Moses who wrote them down. But the tablets were inscribed by the finger of God.

There have been skeptics who claim that Moses copied the commandments from an ancient Babylonian text called the Code of Hammurabi. While Hammurabi did record 282 civil and criminal laws, 300 years before Moses, any similarities between the two sets have remained just that—similarities.

God wrote the Ten Commandments on stone tablets and gave them Moses to share with all the Israelites soon after they left captivity in Egypt (Exodus 20:1-26). Moses reiterated them 40 years later in Deuteronomy 5:1-22 as the Israelites neared the Promised Land.

Thou shalt not have any other gods before God. Exodus 20:3.

Thou shalt not make yourself an idol. Exodus 20:4-6.

Thou shalt not take the Lord’s name in vain. Exodus 20:7.

They provided the foundation of personal and property rights found in our modern legal system. Jewish tradition holds that all 613 laws found in the Torah are summed up in the Ten Commandments.

Jesus called people to an even higher standard by obeying the commandments not only in their actions but also in their hearts. For instance, Jesus quoted the command not to commit adultery (Exodus 20:14, Deuteronomy 5:18).

Scholars agree that the Ten Commandments, or more literally, “10 Words,” are found in Exodus 20:1-26 and Deuteronomy 5:1-22. Still, they debate the division of the commands because there are more than ten commands.

In Hebrew scrolls, the text is typically written in a format justified in columns. The Ten Commandments stand out because they are not right and left sides justified, but large white spaces are in the middle of the text.

In English translations, a new paragraph is started after each commandment. The unusual Hebrew spacing has led to differences in counting the 10 Commandments in Jewish, Protestant, and Catholic traditions.

The first several commandments kept the Lord God as the focus. God created the world and everything in it.

“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. “You shall have no other gods before me.

You shall not bow down to them or worship them. for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.

The initial commandments start with the relationship with the “Lord your God” (Exodus 20:2). God told His people He was their Lord, Master, and Creator God.

They should not misuse his name. These commands were a dramatic change from the Egyptian view of a deity.

The Sabbath bridges our relationship with God, and the following commandments address our relationships with others. “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.

On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day.

God commanded his people to take the Sabbath for their benefit. God “blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.” This phrase in the Ten Commandments is a quote from the creation account in Genesis 2:3, “Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested.”.

God intended for his people to enjoy their relationship with Him and each other by valuing the Sabbath. The Sabbath is set apart to connect with God and with other people.

It was to be a blessing for all of creation. Leaving captivity in Egypt meant establishing a new society.

Read these laws and imagine how they would help develop a healthy community. “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

“You shall not commit adultery. “You shall not steal.

“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor” (Exodus 20:2-17).

Our relationship with our parents is the foundation for our future relationships and choices. Here’s how Paul explained to new believers in Ephesians that choosing to honor your parents has consequences like enjoying a long life.

‘Honor your father and mother’—which is the first commandment with a promise— ‘so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth’” (Ephesians 6:1-3).

Kids learn to honor their parents by seeing their parents honor God and His commandments. Do Not Lie.

Should Christians Really Give Up All Their Possessions.

Lying devalues and disrespects another person by not telling the truth. Do Not Steal.

In a time when “might makes right,” they were to respect each other’s property rights. Do Not Murder.

Because people are made in the image of God, life has value. Murder is an intentional act that says that a person’s life has no value compared to another’s priorities.

You Shall Not Commit Adultery. God commanded his people to be faithful in marriage and to respect other people’s vows as a model of faithfulness in their relationship with God.

Interestingly, God’s command not to commit adultery was an equal standard for men and women. In the New Testament, Jesus called his followers to faithfulness in marriage (Matthew 5:27-28, Mark 10:11-12).

“But since sexual immorality is occurring, each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman with her own husband” (1 Corinthians 7:2). You Shall Not Covet.

You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor” (Exodus 20:17). Why would God include coveting in the same list as murder, stealing, and adultery.

God knew coveting a neighbor’s servant, ox, or wife was a stepping stone to ungratefulness and discontentment – even lying, stealing, murder, and adultery. Focusing on what others have diminishes our ability to appreciate the good things in our lives.

Many wonder which words were written on the stone tablets and if the first tablet contained commands 1-5 and the second contained 6-10. Other scholars divide the list between the first two commandments and the following eight based on the word length of the text.

Whatever holds the supreme place in a person’s life is a god. The story is told that in a certain museum in China there was an exhibit called “The American God.” And what do you suppose it was.

It is strange how modern men turn away from the living God, who is revealed in nature and the Bible, and invent imaginary gods to fit their unbelieving hearts. In his book, God and the Cosmos, Dr.

One of these modern leaders says, “God is myself” (Page 23). Another says that he worships man (Page 19).

These are some of the false gods proclaimed by the wise men of today. Some worship pleasure.

But all these things are as imperfect as humans themselves, and those who trust in them will be left at last without a light in the vacant and dark night, until the words of the first commandment meet them in the judgment: “Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.”.

you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.”.

Millions in the world need to hear this commandment. Jesus said in John 4:24, “God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”.

An idol image degrades God and it degrades man. God’s jealousy against false gods is but infinite love which allows no rival for our heart’s affection.

Bible reference – Exodus 20:7: “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.”. Explanation: Has the world advanced so far that we do not need this commandment any more.

Have men–and women and children, too–ceased to take God’s name in vain. Have they at last learned to honor the holy name of our Saviour.

How many millions violate this commandment every day. And how many do about the same thing with common slang.

It is recorded in Matthew 12:36, 37, “But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”.

We need the Sabbath or God would not have made it for us. Jesus said that it was “made for man” and that He Himself is the Lord of the Sabbath (Mark 2:27, 28).

Wherever we are and whether we regard God’s holy day or not the commandment is still there. Do you recognize and observe it in your home.

Think of the happiness that obedience to this commandment would bring to thousands of homes today. Then every day would be Mother’s Day and every day would be Father’s Day.

Do you know that there are many thousands who have broken this commandment living at large in this country. And judging from past records, many thousands who will die at the hands of others.

From the first groan of Abel to the last prayer upon the scaffold, this commandment comes thundering into the hearts of men, “Thou shall not murder.”.

Explanation: Do we need a greater regard for the sanctity of the home today. Do we need more honest obedience to marriage vows.

What is the answer. You know the answer.

A thousand times yes.

Now is the time for every Christian home to stand as an example of right living. Remember, you can’t write SIN in big letters without the law of God.

Proverbs 14:34 says, “Righteousness exalts a nation, But sin is a reproach to any people.”.

Explanation: According to police and press reports, the world still needs this commandment. The varieties of thieves are almost endless ranging from mere pickpockets and purse-snatchers, to men who steal widows’ homes, children’s education, banks, industries, and the good names of their friends.

Bible reference – Exodus 20:15: “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.”. Explanation: This commandment forbids bribery and forgery and even the least suggestion contrary to truth.

In Revelation 22:15, we are told that “whoever loves and practices a lie” will be outside the gates of the New Jerusalem, and in Revelation 21:27 “But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.”.

If Paul needed this commandment, so do we.

Paul says in Romans 7:12 that “the commandment is holy, and just, and good.” And in verse 14 he says that it is spiritual. You see, our obligations are not merely to a law, but to Him who enacted that law.

The evil is in us, not in God or in His commandments.

“I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 1.

Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me.

Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
