Adapting ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ into a movie [2]

Get ready Harry Potter fans — the wizarding franchise might expand. There is chatter about bringing the stage play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” to theaters.

“Warner Bros are currently looking at how to bring The Cursed Child to the big screen,” a source reported to The Sun. “At the moment it is in very formative stages and they are discussing the next steps to move it forward.”.

Its most recent endeavor — the “Fantastic Beasts” movies — were slammed by critics. So much so that filmmakers put a halt on completing the five-movie series after just three installments, per 7news.

“If the series were to fizzle out, that would be a relief. No amount of movie magic can save it now,” panned Shirley Li in The Atlantic, after the release of the most recent “Fantastic Beasts” installment.

After the “Fantastic Beasts” flop, Warner Bros is allegedly “full steam ahead” in making the “Cursed Child” series, but significant changes could be necessary to impress audiences. The West End production of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” has received its own slew of bad reviews.

“Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” is a play written by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany.

The play catches up with Harry 19 years after his defeat of Voldemort in the Battle of Hogwarts. Harry’s life looks different now — he’s a husband and father of three who works for the Ministry of Magic.

His eldest son, Albus, is grappling with his own set of challenges — following in his famous father’s footsteps at Hogwarts. Albus sets off on a much different path than Harry when he gets sorted into Slytherin, the Hogwarts house notorious for breeding dark wizards, and befriends Scorpius Malfoy, son of Harry’s childhood nemesis, Draco.

Once “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” got put on stages across the world, a condensed, roughly three-hour version of the play was written.

It is now showing in theaters across the world: Broadway, Melbourne, Hamburg, Toronto and Tokyo, according to the Cursed Child site.

Critics received the “Cursed Child” with mixed reviews. Vulture called it “record-breakingly extravagant, and extravagantly entertaining.”.

“I.. worry that people who’ve only watched the films might have trouble with portions of the play,” Vanity Fair wrote.

Despite the show’s intense plot, critics gave loads of praise for its visual effects.

“There’s a giddy bravado to a lot of this stuff.. Tiffany smartly contextualizes the spectacle, figuring out how to make a live ‘Harry Potter’ show feel magical in a way that’s unique to the theater.”.

budgets of the ‘Harry Potter’ movies — that come nowhere near approaching the magic of Tiffany’s staging.”. There is no doubt that CGI is capable of incredible stunts, but will it be able to recreate the magic of visual effects on stage.

If movie makers can recreate the magic effects of the stage show, it is sure to impress audiences.

The length proved to be the show’s weak point. At almost six hours in length, the excessively long and pricey play was not accessible to young kids and families.

Critics were pleased with the shortened plot. It felt more straightforward and easily understood.

“Without so much gratuitous small talk, lackluster punchlines and ineffective jabs, whatever has survived the cut is much more impactful than before,” wrote the Los Angeles Times.

These situations, once diluted by dialogue, have been rewritten into simple, more straightforward sentiments — brief monologues or emphatic one-liners, each given seconds to sink in.”. It is likely that the movie adaptation will be broken up into two installments based on the condensed version of the play.

“The hope at the moment is that ‘The Cursed Child’ could be made into two films — both of which would pack as much punch, if not more, than the stage show,” according to 7news.

Chris Columbus — director of the first two “Harry Potter” movies — expressed interest in directing a “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” movie.

“It’s a great play and the kids are actually the right age to play those roles. It’s a small fantasy of mine.”.

“The dream would be to have major stars returning, including Daniel Radcliffe, but that is still incredibly far off,” a source told The Sun. “Everyone who works within the Harry world wants Daniel to be back, but first they have to iron out the plan for how many films it will be, a reworked script and budgets.”.

Although Grint said he would be open to reprising his role as Ron Weasley.

It was a character that was important to me, we kind of became the same person,” per the Daily Mail.

A long-rumored seven season Harry Potter television series in on track to appear on HBO in the near future, Deadline confirmed in April.

Rowling to produce the series. It is understood that the series will be available through streaming via Max.

The series does not have a release date yet.

Will J.K. Rowling Approve The Cursed Child Adaptation? [3]

After the failure of the Fantastic Beasts film series, Warner Bros. Discovery is reportedly looking to move forward with a movie adaptation of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

The Wizarding World has experienced its own ups and downs through the years, but its momentum slowed down after Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 ended Daniel Radcliffe’s on-screen adventure as the titular wizard in 2011.

Now, amid the promising news that plans for a small screen expansion for Harry Potter’s adventures to continue, a new update about a potential Harry Potter 9 emerged online.

Discovery CEO David Zaslav and movie executives Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy to “go hard” after a movie adaptation of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child which would effectively be Harry Potter 9.

While the play follows Harry’s son, Albus Severus Potter, as its protagonist, it still managed to include the main trio (Harry, Ron, and Hermione) alongside Draco Malfoy with significant roles.

Even if Zaslav closed a deal with J.K. Rowling soon, no project would release until 2025 or later.

However, the Wizarding World property is thriving, with books still selling as well as the upcoming launch of Hogwarts Legacy in next-gen consoles. In addition, Warner Bros.

It’s clear that the demand for more Hogwarts-related content is still there, and the studio is aware of that.

Discovery has full adaptation rights for the seven Harry Potter books, meaning that Zaslav has the opportunity to develop remakes of those movies with brand-new actors.

Instead, what’s not known from that development, as Puck notes, is that the studio saved hundreds of millions of dollars since Spielberg would have required them to share the franchise with him, similar to the deal he made with Universal on the Jurassic Park movies.

Belloni noted that Warner “needs” the notable author, with the franchise’s future being highly dependent on its creator who has a complicated public persona.

The report believed that it’s unclear to Warners’ executives whether Rowling gets the messages sent for her, or how those are even relayed.

In light of this news, Zaslav teased during the company’s earnings call that new Harry Potter movies could be on the way, with the studio’s clear emphasis on “franchises” moving forward.

Discovery to move forward with a fresh take on the Wizarding World.

Still, the reality is there are a lot of moving parts in play, such as the actors’ willingness and availability, scheduling conflicts, and ultimately, J.K. Rowling’s approval.

It is unknown if Rowling is willing to give the go-ahead for a potential reboot, but it’s likely that the author could approve a The Cursed Child movie adaptation.

Seeing these characters again could be a massive win for the studio, but it would eventually boil down to how they would honor the story on the big screen.

How Many Harry Potter Movies are There? [4]

Although there are many folks out there who think the books were better than their film adaptations, the Harry Potter movies have become an essential part of the franchise. The film universe has even extended beyond the original series with 3 addtional Fantastic Beast prequels that introduced us to a new part of the wizarding world.

Whether you’re new to the series or have just forgotten the proper order of the films, we’ve got you covered with our guides below. Take a look at how to watch the Harry Potter movies in chronological order or by release date.

Although there were only 7 books in the original series, there are a total of 11 movies in the Harry Potter franchise. This includes 8 films based on the books (2 parts for the Deathly Hallows) and 3 Fantastic Beasts prequels.

If you want to exclude the Fantastic Beasts movies from your streaming marathon, you can watch all 8 of the Harry Potter movies in just under 20 hours. Adding in the prequel films will add another 6 hours and 49 minutes to that total.

For context, the Fantastic Beasts movies begin in the 1920s and the Harry Potter films start in the 1990s. And although it takes place before the films, there are quite a few last names in Hogwarts Legacy you’ll recognize from the books and movies and Hogwarts Castle is pretty much exactly the same.

Considering it takes place around 70 years before Harry starts school at Hogwarts, it is the first film you’ll want to watch if you’re going by chronological order. The first Fantastic Beasts film focuses on Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) as he navigates his way through New York and the magical underpinnings of the United States.

Where to Watch: Max to stream, Apple TV+ and Amazon Prime Video to rent. Just a few months after the end of the first prequel, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald takes us back to England and features even more tie-ins to the original Harry Potter Movies.

The film itself largely focuses on the villain revealed in the first movie, Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp). Read our review of The Crimes of Grindelwald.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is the first film in the Fantastic Beasts series that sees a true time jump. Set 5 years after the events of The Crimes of Grindelwald, the third film in the Fantastic Beasts series largely focuses on Grindelwald himself once again — who is actually played by Mads Mikkelsen this time.

Read our review of The Secrets of Dumbledore. Where to Watch: Max to stream, AppleTV+ and Amazon Prime Video to rent.

And while the majority of the film takes place in 1991, the true start of the film is technically 1980 — the year when Harry was born and Hagrid drops him of at the Dursley residence. Since this is the first Harry Potter movie released, it gives us our first look at Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Hermione Granger (Emma Watson), and Ron Weasley (Rupert Grint) as well as our initial forray into wizarding world through a Muggle lens.

Where to Watch: Max and Peacock to stream, AppleTV+ and Amazon Prime Video to rent. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is the second film released in the franchise and thus follows Harry’s second year at Hogwarts.

It also gives us our first indroduction to Professor Gilderoy Lockhart (Kenneth Branagh) and Dobby the House Elf. See more about The Chamber of Secrets.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is the third film in the original series and coincides with Harry’s third year of classes at Hogwarts — taking place in 1993. This is the first film where we start to truly see the darker side of the wizarding world as we get introduced to the likes of Sirius Black (Gary Oldman) and Peter Pettigrew (Timothy Spall).

Taking place in 1994, The Goblet of Fire breathes new life into Hogwarts with the addition of the Triwizard Tournament and the Yule Ball. We get introduced to new important characters like Mad Eye Moody (Brendand Gleeson) and Cedric Diggory (Robert Pattinson).

This also the first film Harry comes face to face with a fully alive Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes). Read our review of The Goblet of Fire.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is the fifth film in the original series and takes place in 1995. Harry starts his fifth year of Hogwarts with a newfound family of sorts and we get our first look at some of the other members of The Order of the Phoenix like the shapeshifting Nymphadora Tonks (Natalia Tena).

There is also a new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor with a penchant for cruelty that everyone gets to hate, Delores Umbridge (Imelda Staunton). Read our review of The Order of the Phoenix.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince is the sixth film to be released and takes place in 1996. As Harry enters his sixth year at Hogwarts school for witchcraft and wizardry, he is starting to truly grow up after being faced with even more death.

We also get to see Voldemort and the Deatheaters fully on the loose as Dumbledore reveals more secrets about the prophecy Harry is a part of. Although this film starts to get pretty dark, it’s also where we see more of Ginny Weasley (Bonnie Wright) and expand her relationship with Harry.

Where to Watch: Max and Peacock to stream, AppleTV+ and Amazon Prime Video to rent. Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 1 takes place in 1997 and coincides with the seventh and final book in the series.

In what would have been Harry’s seventh year at Hogwarts, Harry, Hermione, and Ron instead set out into the real world to find and destroy Horcruxes. With quite a bit of action and deep character growth between Harry, Ron, and Hermione it’s clear the franchise is reaching it’s climax here.

Read our review of The Deathly Hallows – Part 1. Where to Watch: Max and Peacock to stream, AppleTV+ and Amazon Prime Video to rent.

Set in 1998, this film is a continuation of part 1 starting right where the previous film left off. As Harry and his friends reveal more information about the prophecy Harry is part of, they eventually make their way back to Hogwarts for a final showdown against Voldemort and the Deatheaters.

Even the director of Fantastic Beasts admits to the pause in films. It was announced earlier this year that there will be a new Harry Potter TV series based on the books.

It was also recently announced that Daniel Radcliffe will be executive producing a new documentary about his former Harry Potter stunt double, who was left paralysed after an accident. Additionally, the success of Hogwarts Legacy has led to the developers teasing a Hogwarts Legacy 2, which would expand the Hogwarts prequel timeline even further.

Will Max’s Harry Potter Reboot Feature The Cursed Child? [5]

Warner Bros. was rumored to be developing a Harry Potter and the Cursed Child movie for release in 2025.

Written by Jack Thorne, the tale picked up 19 years after The Deathly Hallows as Harry Potter’s son Albus tries to live up to his father’s legacy on a time-hopping adventure with Draco Malfoy’s son Scorpius. The story was written in collaboration with J.K.

Rumors have spread across social media of Harry Potter 9 coming to theaters in 2025 and adapting The Cursed Child stage play following the release of the franchise’s last movie, The Deathly Hallows Part 2, in July 2011.

But there had been some talk of a ninth movie being made before the Max reboot was announced. According to a report from Puck’s Matt Belloni, Warner Bros.

Although, there were reportedly issues securing some key actors. Jeff Sneider claimed that Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe and Hermione Granger’s Emma Watson were skeptical about returning due to the controversy surrounding J.K.

That said, Ron Weasley’s Rupert Grint expressed far more openness to the notion, saying “if the timing was right,” he would be open to reprising his Wizarding World character provided “everyone was kinda coming back:”. “Yeah, I think if the timing was right and everyone was kinda coming back I’d definitely revisit it.

I kinda grew up and we kinda became the same person. I feel quite protective of him as well.”.

“This isn’t the answer that anybody’s going to want, but I think I was so able to go back and enjoy it because it’s not a part of my day-to-day life anymore. I’m getting to a point where I feel like I made it out of ‘Potter’ OK and I’m really happy with where I am now, and to go back would be such a massive change to my life.

For me, it’s only been 10. It’s not something I’m really interested in doing right now.”.

Discovery could secure these key actors, much of the older talent behind the Hogwarts professors, several of whom feature in The Cursed Child, have now passed away. Among those are Michael Gambon (Dumbledore), Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid), and Alan Rickman (Snape).

is only just getting started on its Harry Potter reboot for Max, which will feature a full cast of new actors. The high-budget show is planned as a decade-long venture, meaning the series’ second adaptation won’t even reach The Deathly Hallows until the mid-2030s.

For now, The Cursed Child appears doomed to remain exclusive to the stage, aside from the published script book. Perhaps the best chance fans have of enjoying the play from home is a recorded performance of the show coming to Max akin to how Hamilton was released on Disney+.

has not announced a release window for Max’s Harry Potter series.

It Picks Up Exactly Where We Left Off [6]

Sharing is caring.

While I was in London in October, I was lucky to have the opportunity to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. I’m a huge Harry Potter fan and when I was in London, Lauren, an American ex-pat who writes Aspiring Kennedy, posted on Instagram that she had extra tickets to show.

Just a few nights earlier my husband’s colleague was raving about the show. He didn’t give anything away, he just told me it was wonderful.

So without giving away any details, here is what you need to know about seeing Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Table of Contents.

If you read the books and/or saw the movies you know how JK loves to refer back to the past all the time. Ideally you should at least see all the movies before seeing the play.

You can see the show all in one day, at 2pm and 7:30pm (you have time for a meal between shows). Or you can see the two parts on two different days.

A woman in my row at the second show left during intermission because she didn’t see the first part and couldn’t follow along. And the first part ends with a cliffhanger and you will want to know how the story ends.

The later Harry Potter films get dark and so do the plays. If you wouldn’t let your child see the films, don’t bring them to the play.

The play won nine Olivier Awards including best actor, best new play, and best set design. (Note: The Olivier Awards are the UK’s equivalent of the Tony’s).

What is the sequel to the Harry Potter series? [9]

All eight films in the Harry Potter series are available to stream on Peacock (NBC’s streaming service) or buy digitally on Amazon Prime. The magical moments from the reunion special, Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts, can be seen on HBO Max.

20 years have passed since the release of the first Harry Potter movie. Are you beginning to feel old.

Due to their success, they now have two different theme parks and a ton of amazing merchandise.

However, it’s fine. With streaming services, new magic has emerged to save the day since DVDs are already essentially obsolete.

On Peacock, NBC’s streaming service, all eight Harry Potter movies are accessible for viewing, and they can also be purchased digitally on Amazon Prime. On HBO Max, you can watch the magical scenes from the reunion special Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts.

In the 1997 book Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry Potter first appears as an orphan who is mistreated by his guardians, his aunt and uncle and their son.

Additionally, he finds out that, contrary to what his aunt and uncle had previously told him, his parents were not killed in a car accident. rather, Voldemort, an evil wizard, had murdered them.

Harry was the only person to ever escape a Voldemort attack by reflecting back the latter’s “killing curse,” which left him with a scar in the shape of a lightning bolt on his forehead. Voldemort was virtually dead as a result of Harry’s mysterious survival, and the young boy was thus already well-known in the “wizarding” community.

Draco Malfoy emerges as a rival. The headmaster of the school, Albus Dumbledore, takes him under his wing.

Rowling, a British author, created Harry Potter. Seven wildly successful novels (1997–2007) about his adolescent exploits were turned into eight films (2001–11), and in 2016, a play and a book of the play’s script were published.

Worldwide, the Harry Potter series has proven to be incredibly popular with both kids and adults. Each book was a bestseller, distributed in more than 200 nations and about 60 different languages.

The books were made into a successful series of eight films that were released over ten years and made more than $7 billion in total revenue (the final book, which was about 750 pages long, was adapted into two films). The book and film series collectively gave rise to a massive amount of related merchandise, and in 2010, a theme park based on the franchise debuted in the United States.

Chris Columbus, the director of the first two Harry Potter films, openly admitted that a film version of the stage play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” was the only way the series could go on. Fans naturally want to learn more about the HP trio’s lives after the Second Wizarding World War because the play has already gained a lot of popularity.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child opens with 37-year-old parents, Harry, Ron, and Hermione, dropping their kids off at Hogwarts on Platform 9 3/4. The story is set 19 years after the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

The play also includes Scorpius, the son of Draco Malfoy. Rose, the daughter of Hermione and Ron.

The time-travel element of the play has the potential to create a very captivating film or television series that would appeal to both ardent Potter fans and brand-new viewers by reimagining a significant portion of the original plot.

The fantasy film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which was released in 2016, was made by David Yates and J. K.

It serves as a spin-off prequel to the Harry Potter film series and is the first installment of the Fantastic Beasts film franchise, which was inspired by J.K. Rowling’s 2001 guidebook of the same name.

Warner Bros. Pictures’ Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them had its world premiere in New York City on November 10, 2016, and on November 18, it was released in theaters everywhere in 2D, 3D, 4D, Dolby Cinema, and IMAX formats.

The story takes place in 1926, and Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) has just returned from a worldwide quest to find and catalog an extraordinary variety of magical creatures. If it weren’t for a No-Maj named Jacob, a lost magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s fantastical animals, which could cause problems for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds, he might have arrived in New York for a brief stopover and left without incident.

You can stream the eight film series on Peacock or purchase or rent it at Amazon Prime.

There have been talks of taking the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Play to the big screen, but none of the reports confirm it. In fact, Rowling and Warner Bros.

There are two more Fantastic Beast movies to come, with five of them being planned initially.

The 20th anniversary Harry Potter reunion special can be streamed on HBO MAX.

Hermoine could return, as Rowling explained that her skin color is not mentioned in the books. She made such a statement because it was possible for Hermione to return to the screens as a black girl.

Scorpius Malfoy [11]

We know Harry, Ron and Hermione as well as we know our own friends. But Cursed Child also introduced us to a whole new generation of wizards and witches.

Although if you wish to know more, be our guest.

Albus serves as our hero in Cursed Child, unwittingly following in the footsteps of his famous father. While Harry and Albus are seen not to get along in the play, Harry and his middle-son actually have a lot in common – particularly that they are both reluctant heroes.

After this moment, his Hogwarts journey is marred by self-doubt, which affects his magical abilities. Albus has two other siblings: his older brother, the mischievous James Potter Jr.

– who both get sorted into Gryffindor. Very much like her mother, Rose Granger-Weasley embodies all the same grace, wit and intelligence of Hermione.

Sorted into Gryffindor, Rose seems to excel in everything, and unlike Hermione, even has a knack for Quidditch, being chosen for her house team as a Chaser. Despite a childhood friendship with Albus, and despite starting Hogwarts at the same time as each other, the pair start drifting apart in their earlier years at Hogwarts, with their separate Hogwarts houses not helping matters.

Despite sharing the same physical attributes, such as the blond hair, Scorpius immediately displays an empathy his father did not at his age. He joins Hogwarts at the same time as Albus Potter, forming an unlike friendship on the Hogwarts Express.

Unlike Draco, Scorpius focuses his Slytherin-like determination into his studies, being an avid reader. He’s also a self-confessed geek and adores sweets.

Although nervous and jumpy, like Albus, at the start of his Hogwarts journey, the young student becomes more self-assured as his adventures with Albus go on, despite having to contend with a rumour that he is Lord Voldemort’s son. At first, Delphi appears to be a plucky, colourful-haired helper working at St Oswald’s Home for Old Witches and Wizards, who focuses her efforts on her ‘Uncle’ the bereaved Amos Diggory, father of Cedric.

Despite not attending a wizarding school such as Hogwarts, Delphi is a smart and hugely talented witch with a penchant for Darker magic. She has a tattoo of an Augurey – a mournful, magical bird that symbolises death.

But his portrait, that hangs at Hogwarts, feels too much of a character in its own right not to include him here. All departed Hogwarts headmasters sit for their magical portrait – so they may look over their beloved castle forever.

But, as the kindly portrait of Albus tells Harry, he is merely “paint and memory”, despite embodying all the same wisdom and insight his subject once did. Apparently, the longer a subject spends with their painting, the more personality they will have.

To learn more about how the Hogwarts portraits work, we wrote a guide on that too. A special shout out to some of the new Hogwarts students we meet in the play, beyond the children of Harry, Ron and Hermione.

Commenting that he has “the same hair” as his dad, Yann seems like a bit of a gossip. He hangs out with Rose Granger-Weasley, and is shown to have an aptitude for flying in his first flying lesson.

A stickler for the rules (we see him chastising Harry for breaking into a school dormitory in the middle of the night) this Slytherin Hogwarts student is named as a “good boy”, as he is callously murdered during the play. By who, we will not say.

He enjoys the rumours and gossip that surround Scorpius and Albus, and seems to be friends with.. Polly is a savvy student, also in Albus’s Hogwarts year, and joins in the gossiping about Albus when he arrives at school.

Scorpius Malfoy, at one point, seems to have a bit of a crush on her, but this is short-lived. For more Cursed Child content, visit our collection page to learn all about the eighth Harry Potter story in more detail.

The new characters are totally loveable [12]

The most hotly anticipated London theatre show of the year, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, is finally open. (They’ve had a mere seven weeks of previews to get the play to absolute Potter-perfection..).

But there’s still a chance to see it with the Friday 40 ballot, and in August, the next booking period (from May 2017) opens.

With those kind of odds it might be tempting for all but the most hardened Potterati to opt for the new Ghostbusters movie instead. But through a combination of Twitter mining and gazing in to Professor Trelawney’s crystal ball, Londonist can officially confirm Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is well worth the hassle.

Here are our top reasons to watch the official ticketing website like a hippogriff:. The play’s creative team, led by director John Tiffany, deftly brings the wizarding world to life with hands-down some of the most impressive special effects ever seen on the London stage.

Those imagining panto-like hordes of screaming kids accompanying their theatre watching experience need not fear. The vast majority of ticket holders are Generation Potter who were pre-teens when the books came out but are now..

Yes, fit. Properly fit.

Harry’s no longer that sweet young Daniel Radcliffe from the films. in fact, he’s a bit of an angry dad who shouts a lot.

JK Rowling proves she’s still got it with her character creations: angst-ridden Albus Potter, sparky Rose Granger-Weasley, and mysterious Delphi Diggory will all capture your imaginations. Best of all is the hilariously geeky Scorpius Malfoy, who actually carries a lot of the play.

But with billowing wizard robes and accompanying thumping tunes, the cast animate the story with energetic dance sequences that will have you tapping your toes in your seat. (But please, no dancing in the aisles.

Just when you think Harry Potter and the Cursed Child can’t get any better, the story reveals another surprise. the sets get more elaborate.

They recreate the Hogwarts lake, for goodness sake.

Once you get past the hour-long door queue (bring sandwiches and owl food) the theatre is surprisingly intimate. The fact that you sit in the same seats for both shows/on both nights means you end up chatting to your neighbours.

One thing about the idea of a play that had made hardened Pottermaniacs anxious was whether it would still fit ‘the canon’. Everything we loved about the original Harry Potter books are present and correct in the theatrical version.

And let’s not forget: neither the Harry Potter books, or the Harry Potter films are perfect either. Pottergeeks will have fun smugly pointing out the odd plot inconsistency.

Just don’t tweet your observations to JK Rowling during the interval. That’s not cool.

If you want to brush up on your magical techniques ahead of the show, we’d recommend revising those amazing Time Turners from Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban.

We’d be amazed if they don’t start selling them on the theatre merchandise stands..

Will There Be A Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Movie? [15]

Ever since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2 was released in 2011, fans have been waiting on Platform 9 3/4 for another glimpse of the Golden Trio. It finally came in 2016, albeit in an unexpected manner, with the release of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, a stage play.

But what happens in the follow-up to the beloved franchise, and who is the titular Cursed Child.

The Cursed Child begins right where Deathly Hallows ended, on Platform 9 3/4, where Harry, Ginny, Ron, and Hermione are watching their children board the Hogwarts Express. Albus Severus Potter, Harry and Ginny’s middle child, and Rose Granger-Weasley, Ron and Hermione’s oldest child, wander the train looking for the right place to sit.

That’s where the parallels between their parent’s story and their own end. While Rose leaves, initially refusing to associate with the child of their parents’ rival, Albus stays, and the two boys become fast friends.

For the next three years, the young Potter boy’s time at Hogwarts is one never-ending struggle – he’s bullied for being a Slytherin, for struggling with even the most basic forms of magic, and for lacking his father’s natural talent with a broomstick. Where Rose becomes incredibly popular, both in class and as a Chaser for the Gryffindor Quidditch team, Albus grows increasingly isolated from both his peers and his father.

With Rose in a different house and a different social circle entirely, Albus leans heavily into his relationship with Scorpius. The two become inseparable, and by the end of the book, it’s revealed that their feelings for one another are romantic.

In the summer before the boys’ fourth year, Scorpius’ mother dies from a fatal blood curse. Around the same time, Harry’s scar begins hurting again, and he confiscates a prototype Time-Turner, which allows its user to travel as far back in time as they want but only for five minutes.

Two such devices were created – the initial prototype that Harry recovered and an improved model that allowed its user to remain in the past for as long as they wanted. Neither Lucius nor Nott actually used the Time-Turners, but Lucius passed the improved one down to Draco, who kept it hidden.

Harry refuses, explaining that messing with the timeline is too dangerous. Albus overhears their conversation and meets Delphi Diggory, who claims to be Amos’ niece.

Ultimately, Albus and Scorpius decide to steal the confiscated prototype Time-Turner from Hermione after Rose accidentally confirms its existence. Hermione is now the Minister for Magic, and the boys have to use the Polyjuice Potion to break into the Ministry to find it.

But unbeknownst to them, Delphi is the true child of Voldemort and Bellatrix. After several smaller timeline alterations, Delphi betrays the boys to create a new timeline where Harry was killed, Albus was never born, and Voldemort successfully conquered the Wizarding World.

Some fans have claimed that it is Albus, arguing that he is cursed by a family name he can never live up to. Others, albeit less convincingly, have pointed to Scorpius.

Perhaps the most convincing theory is that Delphi is the Cursed Child. Not only was she born of two insane, evil parents, but she and Harry were both orphaned from infancy.

Harry always wished he’d had the opportunity to grow up with his parents and, at times, would’ve done anything to see them again. Delphi is fundamentally the same.

She is cursed to forever exist outside the margins of Wizarding society. The same reality in which she isn’t alone, the one she craves so desperately, is the one in which the world burns.

Harry addresses this during their final confrontation, in which he tells her that she must simply learn to come to terms with her parents’ death as he did. Refusing to do so only leads to more pain.

They track Delphi back to the night Voldemort killed Harry’s parents and prevent her from warning the Dark Lord against attacking the family. With Delphi captured, Harry remains to watch his parents die all over again, making the sacrifice that Delphi couldn’t for the greater good.

Or at least it is very unlikely. With Warner Brothers rebooting the universe for a Max Original TV series and much of the original cast expressing their lack of interest in returning to the Rowling-affiliated universe, a Cursed Child seems improbable.

No release date has been given for the new series. So, for now, fans will have to keep waiting on the Hogwarts Express.

A brand new version of Harry Potter And The Cursed Child [16]

It’s time for a brand new adventure. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is now playing exclusively at the Princess Theatre in Melbourne – direct from Broadway.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is in Melbourne, now playing at the Princess Theatre.

This week we attended the opening night of the new theatre production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and it has cast its magical spell over Melbourne already.

The Opening Night event was held in the forecourt of the Princess Theatre, and had to be the best party in town.

We felt so thrilled to be there. See our Instagram post about Harry Potter And The Cursed Child with more photos here.

Attendees were embracing the theme en masse, and costumed appropriately. Robes twirled, scarves swung and wands swished and flicked everywhere.

We pulled my girl’s precious Hogwarts robes out of the wardrobe and added a few new accessories, including my new favourite – a screaming Mandrake scarf.

This premiere event took full advantage of the beloved magical Potter theme with several impressive installations. They proved perfect for fun family and Instagram photos.

It was an impressive sight that served to emphasise the flickering, magical atmosphere. As we circulated we posed for some really fun Harry Potter themed photos.

There was even a Platform 9¾ wall, complete with a half-through baggage trolley – so that you could pretend to make a run at the wall of course.

A red carpet photo wall was there too, and perhaps the most fun surprise of all – a trolley lady handing out chocolate.

We were met with a cocky “Anything from the trolley, dears. ”.

It wasn’t just my teenagers clamouring around her, either – adults left right and centre were excitedly lining up to interact with the trolley lady, and get their own chocolate. Harry Potter of course now has generations of adult fans too.

This Wizarding World licensed production is a Potter Head’s dream. A brand new, reimagined version of Harry Potter And The Cursed Child that has been combined into one part instead of the original two part version.

From the moment you enter the theatre, the atmosphere is other-worldly. You can hear eerie, indistinct train station platform calls echoing in the light-studded dim of the historic Princess Theatre.

A levitating bowler hat is seemingly suspended above the stage, and you find yourself trying to puzzle out how it’s actually DOING THAT. The answer just may be – magic.

The stage for Part One of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is eerily lit.

The whole gang is back for this play – Harry (Gareth Reeves), Ron (Michael Whalley), Ginny (Lucy Goleby), Hermione (Paula Arundell) and Draco (Lachlan Woods)…plus some fun surprise come-backs. But this magical tale is really all about the new generation.

This play is very-much the story of what happens next – a continuation of the Harry Potter stories. With a whirl of wizard and witches robes, scenes change and magical twists, turns and slight of hand illusions happen seamlessly.

The Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Act 2 stage setting featured a Dark Mark. Act 2 was every bit as wonderful as the first, and the audience were so ready for it – you could feel the anticipation before it even began.

I don’t want to go into too much detail or give out any spoilers, however I will say that this show takes you from wonder to joy and even to delighted fear.

My teenagers (and myself) loved this show. For older primary school aged children up, this would be a wonderful outing and magical experience.

Under-fours are not permitted at all. One things for sure- this new show is a highly entertaining, and often completely astonishing production that will have you on the edge of your seat.

It was an obvious seal of audience approval. This fabulous production is a hit – and a truly spellbinding way to spend a special night out in Melbourne.

Book your tickets without delay. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is travelling the world, but playing only at the Princess Theatre in Melbourne.

So if you don’t live in Melbourne then this is the excuse to visit you’ve been looking for.

We were flown Sydney to Melbourne by our sponsors and favourite budget airline Jetstar Australia. The flying time between Sydney and Melbourne is just 1 hour 35 minutes, and check in and boarding is now as straightforward as it ever was.

While you’re in Melbourne, why not spoil yourself with a decadent five star stay. We loved being hosted by the gorgeous Grand Hyatt Melbourne.

Perfect.
