This article demonstrates how to setup and configure the built-in “Command” key on the SerialMagic Keys keyboard. Note that SerialMagic Keys is meant to be used in unison with SerialMagic Gears.

You may have noticed it previously by tapping it on accident. While the location of the key can take some getting used to, once you discover how much you can improve your workflow with the command key it becomes an indispensable tool.

There are two ways to access the command key settings. The easiest way is to tap on it directly.

The other way is to access it through SerialMagic Gears’ settings page. To access these setting the latter mention method, follow the steps below.

Launch SerialMagic Gears. 2.

Tap on “Settings.”. 4.

Tap on “SerialMagic Keys Settings.”. 6.

To define the Command Key, tap on “Command Data.” It is the second to last option.

Macs can use nearly all keyboards built for Windows PC, whether they are USB or Bluetooth, but you may notice that the layout of some of the modifier keys are different on a Mac keyboard from the layout of a Windows keyboard. Specifically, the WINDOWS and ALT key of a Windows keyboard are switched compared to the Mac keyboard layout of OPTION/ALT and COMMAND keys.

A simple solution to this problem is to remap the Windows and ALT key and the command and option/alt keys on the Windows PC keyboard connected to the Mac, so that the keyboard layouts will mimic expectations based on the standard Apple modifier key layout, rather than what it says on the PC keyboard.

This trick works the same with all Windows and PC keyboard with the standard CTRL / Windows / ALT key layout, and all versions of Mac OS:.

Once finished you will have a new digital layout of the Windows PC keyboard keys when used on the Mac: * NOTE: Some PC keyboards also have the “CNTRL” and “ALT” keys switched too, compared to a standard Mac key layout.

A simple way to confirm the keyboard modifier keys are switched as expected is to issue a keyboard shortcut, like a screen capture (Command Shift 3) or a Close Window command (Command + W). It should work as you’d expect based on the Mac keyboard layout.

But if you are mostly a touch-typer and never look at your hands when typing this shouldn’t be an issue. Essentially you are reversing the Windows PC keyboard Windows and ALT keys (which become the Command and Option/ALT keys when connected to the Mac), which puts them in line with the default Mac and Apple keyboard layout of those buttons.

For example, here’s a Windows PC keyboard with a different modifier key layout than the Apple keyboard layout:.

Thus you can see why switching the modifier key behavior when the PC keyboard is connected to the Mac can be helpful. This trick should be particularly useful to Mac users who have a favorite PC keyboard laying around they want to use, or perhaps prefer a particular Windows PC keyboard for one reason or another.

You can switch the modifier keys in any release and with any keyboard this way.

Every time you’re on your Mac, you’re using modifier keys on your keyboard. These modifier keys, like Command and Option, are probably the most important keys you have, because they can perform shortcuts that are necessary to be more productive and efficient on your computer.

And the most important modifier key of them all. Command.

With it, you can copy and paste text, undo typing, select all your items at once, open a new window and so on. And in addition to all the routine shortcuts it’s known for, the Command key is much more powerful than you might think.

The keyboard shortcut Command-Tab allows you to quickly step through every app window open on your desktop. As long as the window is open on your desktop and not minimized in your dock, holding down the Command-Tab combination will bring up a window with all your open apps.

Command-Tab will bring up all your open windows. Instead of minimizing your window with the yellow minus button up in the top left corner, you can quickly hide any window that’s open on your desktop with the Command-H shortcut.

To open the window back up, simply click the app icon in either your dock or elsewhere. And if you want to hide all app windows except for the one in front, you can use Option-Command-H.

Bring up the search bar and type whatever you want to search for, such as text messages, emails, documents, applications, notes, music, settings, movies or locations. You can use the magnifying glass in the menu bar to bring up Spotlight search, but this keyboard shortcut is at your fingertips: Command-spacebar.

Usually, if you’re sharing a web address you double-click in the search bar and then copy the selected text to your clipboard. However, there’s a faster way to do this: use Command-L.

You can then hit Command-C to copy it so you can paste it elsewhere. With Command-L, you can quickly highlight the URL in your web browser.

Simply hit Command-Shift-T and you’ll recover whatever tab you most recently closed. And if you’ve closed several tabs and want to recover all of them, you can continue pressing the Command-Shift-T shortcut to open multiple closed tabs.

While it’s almost universally known for opening up a new window in many popular applications, on your Mac the Command-N shortcut can open a new email in Mail, a text message in iMessage, a window in Safari, a note in Notes, an event in Calendar and more. Try it out in your favorite apps and see what Command-N can open for you.

The Option key is a modifier key that, in combination with other keys, sends specific commands or completes shortcuts. By holding the opt key with certain key combinations, you can do things that normally require a trackpad or a mouse.

Any computer user needs to be familiar with the Option and Alt key, as they are the cornerstones of any keyboard experience. They help issue keystrokes, access hidden functions, and perform many other functions.

It is usually located between the Command and Ctrl keys on the left side of the bottom row of Apple keyboards. Newer Macs with larger keyboards come in variants that have an Option/Alt key (right side of the keyboard).

There’s a secondary “Alt” located on the right-hand side of the keyboard, between the “Command” key and the “Left arrow” key. The Option key carries a myriad of essential uses on the Mac, depending on the key combinations and application.

Closing All Windows Option+Command+W The Option key (Alt), in conjunction with the “close window” command (Command+W), automatically closes all open windows in the currently used program. When any unsaved programs are in operation, the program will ask you whether you would like to save the changes made to the program before entirely closing down the file in use.

Navigational Purposes Option + Left/Right arrow Hold down the Option key and press left or right for easier navigation on either side. Copying Files Option + Mouse Dragging Hold down the Option Key while you drag your files with the mouse to another folder or the Finder.

Music. The functions mentioned above are only a few of the many functions this special key can do when utilized properly.

The command key is known by many names, cmd key or the Apple key. However, it is only known to those who are familiar with the Apple ecosystem.

The alternative to the Command key makes no sense for someone who has recently switched from Mac to Windows. But, thankfully, there is a solution.

The closest buttons that work similarly to the Cmd key are: The command key is mostly used to perform routine shortcuts on a Mac.

The ctrl key can be used similarly to the command key. Here are a few examples.

If you connect a Windows keyboard to a Mac system, the computer does what we call a key substitution. This means that the command key is mapped to a different key on the Windows keyboard.

By default, the command key is mapped to the Control key. Or, you can map it to a different modifier key by following these steps on a Mac OS.

For example, if you map the command key to the option then make sure the option key is mapped to the command. To change the command key on windows, follow these steps.

Use an online checker like this to press the key on your keyboard. If the on-screen button doesn’t light up, the button is physically inaccessible.

Just make sure that the From key is set to Left Ctrl and change the To key to a working button. There are tons of keyboard mapping apps available online.

Windows does not provide a built-in method to disable the command key. There are many third-party apps that make disabling easier.

But, we can also use it to disable the key entirely. Make sure that the To key is mapped to Turn Key Off at the beginning of the list.

Alternatively called the Beanie key, Cloverleaf key, fan key, cmd key, open Apple key, or Command, the Command key is a key created by Susan Kare found on all Apple keyboards. The picture shows the command key on the Apple keyboard next to the control and option keys.

No PC keyboard has a command key. Users who are not familiar with Apple computers, but are familiar with IBM compatible computers, can relate this key to the Microsoft Windows key.

Remapping a Windows keyboard so that the key positions match a standard Mac keyboard is pretty easy. Just open Keyboard Preferences, and click the Modifier Keys… button in the Keyboard tab.

This lets you change the behaviour of the keys on each attached keyboard (make sure you select your external one from the top drop-down menu). To turn the Windows standard Ctrl⊞WinAlt configuration to the Mac standard controloptioncommand ⌘, just change the Option and Command drop downs so they have the opposite entries (i.e.
