This weekend, Logan Paul will try to emulate his brother’s performance against Ben Askren by knocking out Floyd Mayweather live on Showtime in the US and Sky in the UK. To be frank (and despite being at least 30 pounds heavier), that’s his only chance of winning the fight.

But that, of course, rests on people paying to watch the PPV. Unfortunately, all the signs suggest that huge numbers of people will pirate the event instead, and that will rest pretty squarely on the shoulders of Logan and brother Jake.

When you add in the fact that the Pauls never shut up about having more money than most regular fans, you have to wonder whether the ‘Logangsters’ would want to part with all of their spare cash to watch the fight when an illegal stream is just a click away. And there are other problems too.

Ok, their hero disposed of his opponent quickly and spectacularly but was it worth $49.99. As a boxing fan, who appreciates a good fight, absolutely not.

To be clear, there will not be a quick knockout of Floyd Mayweather, so the round-to-dollar ratio should present much more value. But this is a fight card, not just one fight, so will there be more value there.

Being more objective, probably not.

Add in the fact that most Logan Paul fans will have zero clue who anyone else is on the card, it’s doubtful they’ll be sitting through all of it. In fact, most people are clearly only interested in the main event and whichever way you cut it, that is not worth the money in itself.

The UK, where the Federation Against Copyright Theft has already issued a “DON’T PIRATE” warning on behalf of its client Sky, will be especially affected due to problems dating back decades. Very big fights tend to happen in the US, on US broadcasting schedules, meaning that in the UK the Mayweather v Paul fight will take place in the middle of the night.

Granted, younger fans might have less of a problem staying conscious but paying for a PPV and keeping mom and dad awake might prove even less popular. Instead, expect many thousands of young Paul fans to be tucked up in bed with a phone, tablet or laptop for company, waiting for their social media friends to paste them a link to the fight, either live or straight after.

According to the contract, going the distance after making Paul look like an amateur still won’t mean a win for Mayweather though. So, the YouTuber’s fans can get up on the morning after the fight, declare victory, and begin saving up for Jake Paul’s next battle against former UFC champ Tyron Woodley in August.

Depending on how long the fight lasts (or God forbid Mayweather gets knocked out), paying might become a more attractive option next time. But let’s see.

While Mayweather is an International Boxing Hall of Fame fighter, going 50-0 during a career spanning from 1996 through 2017, Paul is just 0-1 in his fighting career, failing to defeat fellow YouTuber KSI in a split decision loss November 2019.

In a sport primarily based on tribalism where the biggest fights feature boxers of opposing ethnicities fighting one another, this matchup as did Mayweather’s last fight, a 2017 match against UFC superstar Conor McGregor, capitalizes on the public’s hunger for the next Great White Hype while also delivering a spectacle that will entertain the masses.

Although the fight can be stopped due to knockout as well as the referee’s discretion, there will be no scorecards. On Sunday night in Miami Gardens, Florida, Floyd Mayweather outboxed Logan Paul over eight rounds in an exhibition bout that, by rule, had no official winner. For all the expectations of a wild clash between the boxing legend and the YouTube star, the fight looked like most of Mayweather’s fights have: Mayweather proving his elite skills can overcome any challenge placed in front of him.

To that end, it was a victory of sorts for the 26-year-old. Much was made before the fight of what, if any, meaning the contest had in a larger context.

Are YouTubers the future of the sport. And are Mayweather exhibitions a staple of the near future of combat.

Some may have had brief flirtations with the idea of Mayweather going all out and blitzing the Vine-turned-YouTube star to score an emphatic knockout, or even daydreaming of an internet-breaking knockout win for Paul. Stepping back from the insanity of the situation and the media onslaught of the week, the fight going eight rounds was always the thing that made the most sense.

Floyd never went overboard in his promises heading into the fight. Mayweather said, “This is legalized bank robbery.

Mayweather was never an in-ring risk taker. Yes, he fought great fighters.

Why would things be any different against a man who dwarfed him in the ring. Floyd Mayweather did what Floyd Mayweather does by minimizing risk and making statements in the safe spaces in between.

Or, rather, boxing is as fine as it has been in the modern era. The influx of “celebrity fights” has been touted by many — most who exist outside the boxing “bubble” — as some sort of sign of a flailing desperation for attention across the sport.

TikTok card and those who eagerly anticipated the junior welterweight unification bout between Josh Taylor and Jose Ramirez. Those two audiences are not going to build a meaningful investment in the other, no matter how much boxing promoters may wish it would.

Nonito Donaire are relentless displays of sustained action. Those who appreciate this have not lost appreciation for the heart of what boxing is because Jake Paul knocked out Ben Askren or Logan Paul and Floyd Mayweather fought a somewhat lackluster exhibition.

They’re simply visiting because the sport’s core appeal of two people punching each other in the face is simple to grasp and a wild idea for a generation grown on the concept of influencers and media stunts. Even before the infamous “gotcha hat” moment where Jake Paul stole Floyd Mayweather’s hat and took an uppercut for his trouble, there was a line of thinking that Mayweather vs.

Jake down the road. It’s a silly idea and one that should be left to die.

He’s gone through a YouTuber, a retired NBA player and a retired UFC fighter with bad striking in quick, brutal succession. Now, Jake is lined up to face Tyron Woodley, another former UFC fighter, albeit one with more dangerous striking later this summer.

To cash that out for an exhibition with Mayweather does not do him any good, nor does it benefit Mayweather — except for the heaps of money both men would stand to make. Mayweather faced Logan Paul and proved he could handle a bigger, wildly less skilled fighter on Sunday night.

If Mayweather is as serious about a rematch with Conor McGregor as he and Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe said they are, that’s the fight to make. The interest is still there, especially as some have clung to the idea that McGregor was ever in control of their 2017 meeting.

Or, as Mayweather suggested he was ready to do at the post-fight press conference, simply walk away from boxing competition, exhibition or otherwise.
