One-Piece Dresses [2]

What are your favorite K-dramas of the year so far. What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim is definitely one of mine.

The novel-turned-comic-turned-TV show earned Park Min-young the K-Star Award at the 6th APAN Star Awards. Instead of asking what’s wrong with Secretary Kim, maybe we should ask “What’s right with Secretary Kim.

WARNING: If you haven’t seen the drama, watch out for spoilers below.

Compared to her colleagues (who are also secretaries) and siblings, Secretary Kim’s workwear is rather monotonous. For the secretary to the Vice President, it’s better to play it safe than be adventurous.

The best part about her style is the different ways she ties the inset sashes around her neck. There’s also a scene where the Vice President “unties” her – sexy.

Secretary Kim wears mostly pastels, which give her a feminine appeal without sacrificing formality. Rather than earthy or muted colors, she tends to wear soft and bright hues for a young, clean and refreshing look.

She only wears one-piece dresses for corporate events like cocktail dinners, or when she has a date with the Vice President. In the first episode, she wore a bright orange ruffled off-shoulder dress paired with a glittery Jimmy Choo clutch at a corporate dinner.

Some of her other outfits include a fluttering canary yellow dress that she wore to a dinner date with the Vice President, a little black dress (LBD) when he proposed, and a structured pink midi for the parents’ meetup.

The Vice President mentions that he bought Secretary Kim many bags, ranging from Hermés, Dior, Chloé and Loewe to Salvatore Ferragamo, Tod’s, Michael Kors and Longchamp. This makes Kim’s bag repertoire worth every girl’s envy.

She lets her hair down only when she wears top-handle bags (which isn’t often).

Since Park Min-young is an ambassador for Shiseido, what makeup brand would you expect her to support in the drama. There are a few scenes that show Secretary Kim anxiously preparing for a date.

Secretary Kim mainly wears jewelry from the Korean brand STONEHENgE, including the rhinestone pendant necklace that the Vice President gives her. She switches up her earrings almost every day – she wears threaders, draped chains, hoops, studs or rhinestone flowers but they always remain minimal.

Where and When to Watch the Philippine Remake of “What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim” [3]

Heads up, K-drama fans: What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim is officially getting the Philippine treatment.

After a round of speculation in the past few months, the official confirmation has now arrived, with Linlang’s Kim Chiu and Paulo Avelino set to topbill the remake. Originally released in 2018, the hit K-drama stars Park Seo Joon as Lee Young-joon, the vice chairman of a major corporation, whose professional life is upended when his long-term secretary Kim Mi-so (played by Park Min Young) announces her resignation.

“Anticipating the unveiling of this culturally adapted rendition, we eagerly await the opportunity to captivate Filipino viewers by bridging the narrative and characters to resonate with local audiences, all the while preserving the inherent charm and essence of the original script,” Sebastian Kim, CJ ENM’s Director for International Content Sales said in a statement.

The show is set to stream on the Viu platform sometime in 2024. Hey, Preview readers.

We’ll curate the most stylish feed for you.

Here’s a list of K-dramas on Netflix and Viu that you should watch after Business Proposal:  [4]

Don’t you just miss watching K-dramas with so many clichés. While we love series with shocking plot twists, we have to admit that we like seeing tropes such as the rich guy, poor girl plot and the ~accidental~ kisses.

Now that Tae Moo and Ha Ri’s story has ended, we know you’re looking for more feel-good shows that don’t require a lot of thinking and guarantee next-level kilig. From office romances to fake identities..

Where you can watch it: Netflix and Viu. If there’s a K-drama that’s *very* similar to Business Proposal, that would be What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim.

And did we mention that it’s adapted from a webtoon, too.

Who’s in it: Park Hyun Sik, Park Bo Young, Ji Soo. Where you can watch it: Netflix and Viu.

Not long after, he starts receiving threats and is now followed by a stalker. Enter Bong Soon, a woman with superhuman strength who was hired by Min Hyuk to be his bodyguard.

Who’s in it: So Ji Sub, Gong Hyo Jin, Seo In Guk. Where you can watch it: Netflix and Viu.

The Master’s Sun is what you’re looking for. In this drama, Gong Hyo Jin plays Tae Gong Shil, a cheerful person whose life was changed after an accident.

Things started looking up when she meets CEO Joong Won (So Ji Sub) who’s actually nice despite his selfish exterior. Thanks to him, the spirits vanish whenever Gong Shil’s near him.

Who’s in it: Park Shin Hye, Jang Geun Suk, FT Island’s Lee Hong Ki, CNBLUE’s Jung Yong Hwa. Where you can watch it: Netflix.

You’re Beautiful tells the story of an aspiring nun named Go Mi Nyeo and her twin brother, Go Mi Nam. One day, Mi Nam had to go abroad because his plastic surgery went wrong.

It wasn’t love at first sight when she met the group’s lead vocalist, Hwang Tae Kyung, but he slowly warms up to Mi Nyeo after discovering the ~real~ her.

Where you can watch it: Netflix. A classic gem that you shouldn’t miss, Coffee Prince is one of the series that introduced us to K-drama clichés.

The twist. The female lead is often mistaken for a guy, and so the male lead hires her to pretend that she’s his gay lover.

Who’s in it: Moon Ga Young, Cha Eun Woo, Hwang In Yeop, Park Yoo Na. Where you can watch it: Viu.

It was our serotonin boost in 2020 because of its light, super kilig, and funny storyline. The love triangle will have you rooting for the second lead, while the friendships are something that will touch your heart.

What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim [6]

Before his breakthrough in the MCU, Park Seo-joon was and still is an A-list actor in Korea known for his impressive K-drama roles alongside Gyeongseong Creature. When it comes to new or veteran fans, one name is often included in the list of actors that are a must-watch.

But Park has shifted away from the genre breaking into Hollywood as Prince Yun in the MCU. Not to mention his cameo in Parasite.

K-drama fans didn’t have to worry about losing their favorite actor as he stars in Netflix’s Gyeongseong Creature alongside Han So-hee. He plays the role of Tae-sang, a wealthy pawn shop owner in Gyeongseong.

The actor dazzles on screen no matter what genre of role and has a popular filmography to watch.

It’s a hidden gem among fans who enjoy a Cinderella story. The romantic comedy focused on Kim Hye-jin (Hwang Jung-eum) and a true story.

When her family goes bankrupt, she also loses her looks. She’s seen as less desirable as an adult due to her frizzy hair and rosy red cheeks.

He was the opposite having been an unattractive boy but growing up handsome and successful.

Her pretty friend takes her place and pretends to be her. Unknown to Hye-jin, her friend develops a crush on Sung-joon.

But Sing-joon doesn’t recognize her and belittles her.

One historical K-drama that had fans’ hearts was 2017’s coming-of-age story Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth. It starred Park Seo-joon, Go A-ra, and Park Hyung-sik in the leading roles alongside an impressive ensemble cast.

When his father dies and political chaos ensues, his mother makes a choice. She sends him away for his safety against people who wish to kill him.

They are a group of elite warriors sworn to protect the throne. But they are unaware that among them is the prince and future king himself.

He has a secret even he’s unaware of. Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth is available on Viki and Amazon Prime Video.

It’s a sports romance that caters to all the well-loved tropes of romance. Ko Dong-man (Park Seo-joon) was a former TaeKwonDo athlete who quit due to an incident.

He has been friends with his neighbor Choi Ae-ra (Kim Ji-won) for years and constantly bicker with each other. Despite being childish, they have never seen each other as romantic partners – until the tide turns.

Ae-ra has always dreamed of leaving her department store job and becoming an announcer. The two venture on a journey to chase their dreams while also realizing the sparks and romance between them.

If there’s one K-drama that indoctrines all newcomers, it’s What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim. The K-drama is a cut classic that portrays every known trope with flair.

It’s a boss-employee relationship that’s comedic, blush-worthy, and with a bit of thrill. Kim Mi-so (Park Min-young) has worked for her vice-chairman boss Lee Young-joon (Park Seo-joon) for nine years.

The news shakes Young-joon to the core after realizing how much he needs her. In his plight to get her to stay, he begins to fall in love.

What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim is available on Viki. Itaewon Class was Netflix’s biggest claim to fame when it first ventured into K-drams during the Hallyu wave.

The 2020 K-drama is another classic among fans for its storyline. Park Sae-ro-yi (Park Seo-joon) is a newcomer in school who has no issue standing up to bully Jang Geun-won (Ahn Bo-hyun).

Angered, Sae-ro-yi wants his revenge but fails as the bully is the chaebol heir of a powerful CEO. The attack led Sae-ro-yi to be jailed for three years and lose his girlfriend in the process.

His efforts capture the attention of Geun-won again as his father owns a successful chain of restaurants in Itaewon and neighboring areas. Seeing Sae-ro-yi as a threat, they begin a fight to see who prevails.

Itaewon Class is available on Netflix.

In case you’re having King the Land blues, here are 7 feel-good K dramas to watch on Netflix: [7]

It’s been a minute since K-drama fans bid farewell to King the Land, starring Lee Junho and YoonA. The romantic comedy tells the story of Goo Won (Lee Junho), an uptight chaebol heir in competition with her older step-sister to take over King Hotel, a luxury hotel in Seoul, and Cheon Sa Rang (YoonA), a hotelier, who works at King Hotel’s VVIP lounge King the Land, and always has a smile on her face.

Besides making your heart flutter with the undeniable chemistry between the two leads, King the Land will also leave you with an instant smile on your face.

Lee Young Joon (Park Seo Joon) is the typical narcissistic chaebol, who can’t function without his equipped secretary Kim Mi So (Park Min Young). When Secretary Kim decides to resign, a shocked Young Joon takes matters into his own hands and does everything in his power, and beyond that, to convince Mi So to stay.

WWWSK is amongst the top all-time favourite picks for K-drama aficionados.

Yoon Hye-Jin (Shin Min Ah), a dentist and perfectionist in every sense of the word, moves from Seoul to the seaside village Gongjin where she encounters Hong Du-Sik aka Chief Hong (Kim Seon Ho), a man with many jobs. The two, as expected, fall in love, but their charismatic love story doesn’t begin without them constantly bickering with each other.

Speaking of heartfelt family K-dramas, we can’t not mention Reply 1988. The third instalment of Shin Won Ho’s iconic Reply series, Reply 1988 is about the chaotic lives of five friends.

Besides the classic love triangle between Deok Sun, Jung Hwan, and Bo Gum, the drama equally highlights the importance of family and instills instant nostalgia.

When Jin Young Seo (Seol In Ah) convinces her best friend Shin Ha Ri (Kim Se Jeong) to replace her on a blind date with Kang Tae Moo (Ahn Hyo Seop), Ha Ri is in for a surprise when she realises that Tae Moo is in fact the new CEO of the company she works at. Just like Goo Won and Cheon Sa Rang in KTL, Tae Moo and Ha Ri’s bickering chemistry is the focal point of the K-drama.

For K-dramas to have multiple seasons is a rare occurrence. Hospital Playlist is amongst the exceptions, with a deserved second season, and is another Shin Won Ho entry in the list.

Lee Ik Jun (Jo Jung Suk), Yoo Yeon Seok (Ahn Jeong Won), Kim Jun Wan (Jung Kyung Ho), Yank Seok Hyeong (Kim Dae Myung) and Chai Song Hwa (Jeon Mi Do), who effectively operate on patients and are also a part of a band, for hobby. The chaotic moments between the five characters are a definite highlight in this heartwarming K-drama.

A much older addition to this list, we have 2007’s Coffee Prince, a K-drama ahead of its time for tackling homosexuality. Go Eun Chan (Yoon Eun Hye), a tomboy and breadwinner for her family, gets mistaken for a guy by Choi Han Gyeol (Gong Yoo), who hires the former as a waiter at his beatdown coffee shop, Coffee Prince.

Amidst this is also the on-off relationship between Choi Han Sung (Lee Sun Kyun) and Chae Jung An (Han Yoo Joo), Han Gyeol’s cousin and first love.

Choi Ung (Choi Woo Shik), an illustrator, and Kook Yeon Soo (Kim Da Mi), a PR, are disgruntled ex-lovers, who are forced to reunite when the documentary they filmed a decade ago as classmates goes viral in the present time. They are reluctantly brought together again on camera by Ung’s best friend and producer Kim Ji Ung (Kim Sung Cheol), who has unrequited affection for Yeon Soo, while NJ (Roh Jeong Eui), a famous idol, crushes on Ung.

Flash Review: What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim? [8]

Park Seo-Joon as Lee Young-Joon, and Park Min-Young as Kim Mi-So. Release date: June 6 – July 26, 2018.

Available on: Viki. Summary: Lee Young-Joon is the Vice Chairman of the YumYung Group, a large corporation and the family business.

Kim Mi-So has been his secretary for the past nine years, proving herself to be extremely efficient in the execution of her duties and the only person who can keep up with his ego and intellect, anticipating her boss’ will and seeing it carried out. One day, out of the blue, Kim Mi-So announces she has decided to quit her job and start a new chapter in her life, what takes Young-Joon entirely by surprise.

As this is a kdrama, the return of Young-Joon’s hated older brother, Lee Seong-Yeon, complicates matters when he suddenly enters Mi-So’s life, turning himself into a rival romantic interest. Meanwhile, Mi-So starts looking into an old kidnapping case connected to the two brothers.

Pity the sound effect wasn’t timed right in this scene. What I didn’t like:

If that’s not chemistry, I don’t know what is. Every moment these two are together is just perfect.

I know some people disapproved of Mi-So’s decision to stay as Young-Joon’s secretary, seeing it as a regression and arguing she should try something new, but I disagree. At the end of the day, what’s important is that Mi-So is no longer pressured by circumstance to follow a path but is now finally able to decide for herself knowing she has someone in her life who will support her regardless.

She can always quit later. I also appreciated this show wasn’t afraid of showing the two characters actually tie the knot.

Verdict: Initially, I dropped this show like a bomb in the middle of the first episode, as the thought of having a hardcore narcissistic boss as one of the leads did not appeal to me one bit, and having just finished watching the disappointing The Secret Life of my Secretary I really didn’t want to waste much more of my time on a show that promised to be similar.

What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim. is a great office romcom, with Park Seo-Joon and Park Min-Young easily delivering on the romance and the comedy, aided by Kang Ki-Young and a solid supporting cast.

Rewatch meter: High.
