What are your favorite K-dramas of the year so far. What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim is definitely one of mine.

The novel-turned-comic-turned-TV show earned Park Min-young the K-Star Award at the 6th APAN Star Awards. Instead of asking what’s wrong with Secretary Kim, maybe we should ask “What’s right with Secretary Kim.

Compared to her colleagues (who are also secretaries) and siblings, Secretary Kim’s workwear is rather monotonous. For the secretary to the Vice President, it’s better to play it safe than be adventurous.

The best part about her style is the different ways she ties the inset sashes around her neck. There’s also a scene where the Vice President “unties” her – sexy.

Secretary Kim wears mostly pastels, which give her a feminine appeal without sacrificing formality. Rather than earthy or muted colors, she tends to wear soft and bright hues for a young, clean and refreshing look.

She only wears one-piece dresses for corporate events like cocktail dinners, or when she has a date with the Vice President. In the first episode, she wore a bright orange ruffled off-shoulder dress paired with a glittery Jimmy Choo clutch at a corporate dinner.

Some of her other outfits include a fluttering canary yellow dress that she wore to a dinner date with the Vice President, a little black dress (LBD) when he proposed, and a structured pink midi for the parents’ meetup.

The Vice President mentions that he bought Secretary Kim many bags, ranging from Hermés, Dior, Chloé and Loewe to Salvatore Ferragamo, Tod’s, Michael Kors and Longchamp. This makes Kim’s bag repertoire worth every girl’s envy.

She lets her hair down only when she wears top-handle bags (which isn’t often).

Since Park Min-young is an ambassador for Shiseido, what makeup brand would you expect her to support in the drama. There are a few scenes that show Secretary Kim anxiously preparing for a date.

Secretary Kim mainly wears jewelry from the Korean brand STONEHENgE, including the rhinestone pendant necklace that the Vice President gives her. She switches up her earrings almost every day – she wears threaders, draped chains, hoops, studs or rhinestone flowers but they always remain minimal.

After a round of speculation in the past few months, the official confirmation has now arrived, with Linlang’s Kim Chiu and Paulo Avelino set to topbill the remake. Originally released in 2018, the hit K-drama stars Park Seo Joon as Lee Young-joon, the vice chairman of a major corporation, whose professional life is upended when his long-term secretary Kim Mi-so (played by Park Min Young) announces her resignation.

“Anticipating the unveiling of this culturally adapted rendition, we eagerly await the opportunity to captivate Filipino viewers by bridging the narrative and characters to resonate with local audiences, all the while preserving the inherent charm and essence of the original script,” Sebastian Kim, CJ ENM’s Director for International Content Sales said in a statement.

The romantic comedy tells the story of Goo Won (Lee Junho), an uptight chaebol heir in competition with her older step-sister to take over King Hotel, a luxury hotel in Seoul, and Cheon Sa Rang (YoonA), a hotelier, who works at King Hotel’s VVIP lounge King the Land, and always has a smile on her face.

Besides making your heart flutter with the undeniable chemistry between the two leads, King the Land will also leave you with an instant smile on your face.

Lee Young Joon (Park Seo Joon) is the typical narcissistic chaebol, who can’t function without his equipped secretary Kim Mi So (Park Min Young). When Secretary Kim decides to resign, a shocked Young Joon takes matters into his own hands and does everything in his power, and beyond that, to convince Mi So to stay.

When Jin Young Seo (Seol In Ah) convinces her best friend Shin Ha Ri (Kim Se Jeong) to replace her on a blind date with Kang Tae Moo (Ahn Hyo Seop), Ha Ri is in for a surprise when she realises that Tae Moo is in fact the new CEO of the company she works at. Just like Goo Won and Cheon Sa Rang in KTL, Tae Moo and Ha Ri’s bickering chemistry is the focal point of the K-drama.

For K-dramas to have multiple seasons is a rare occurrence. Hospital Playlist is amongst the exceptions, with a deserved second season, and is another Shin Won Ho entry in the list.

Lee Ik Jun (Jo Jung Suk), Yoo Yeon Seok (Ahn Jeong Won), Kim Jun Wan (Jung Kyung Ho), Yank Seok Hyeong (Kim Dae Myung) and Chai Song Hwa (Jeon Mi Do), who effectively operate on patients and are also a part of a band, for hobby. The chaotic moments between the five characters are a definite highlight in this heartwarming K-drama.

A much older addition to this list, we have 2007’s Coffee Prince, a K-drama ahead of its time for tackling homosexuality. Go Eun Chan (Yoon Eun Hye), a tomboy and breadwinner for her family, gets mistaken for a guy by Choi Han Gyeol (Gong Yoo), who hires the former as a waiter at his beatdown coffee shop, Coffee Prince.

Amidst this is also the on-off relationship between Choi Han Sung (Lee Sun Kyun) and Chae Jung An (Han Yoo Joo), Han Gyeol’s cousin and first love.

Choi Ung (Choi Woo Shik), an illustrator, and Kook Yeon Soo (Kim Da Mi), a PR, are disgruntled ex-lovers, who are forced to reunite when the documentary they filmed a decade ago as classmates goes viral in the present time. They are reluctantly brought together again on camera by Ung’s best friend and producer Kim Ji Ung (Kim Sung Cheol), who has unrequited affection for Yeon Soo, while NJ (Roh Jeong Eui), a famous idol, crushes on Ung.

Pity the sound effect wasn’t timed right in this scene. What I didn’t like:

If that’s not chemistry, I don’t know what is. Every moment these two are together is just perfect.

I know some people disapproved of Mi-So’s decision to stay as Young-Joon’s secretary, seeing it as a regression and arguing she should try something new, but I disagree. At the end of the day, what’s important is that Mi-So is no longer pressured by circumstance to follow a path but is now finally able to decide for herself knowing she has someone in her life who will support her regardless.

She can always quit later. I also appreciated this show wasn’t afraid of showing the two characters actually tie the knot.

Verdict: Initially, I dropped this show like a bomb in the middle of the first episode, as the thought of having a hardcore narcissistic boss as one of the leads did not appeal to me one bit, and having just finished watching the disappointing The Secret Life of my Secretary I really didn’t want to waste much more of my time on a show that promised to be similar.

What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim. is a great office romcom, with Park Seo-Joon and Park Min-Young easily delivering on the romance and the comedy, aided by Kang Ki-Young and a solid supporting cast.
