How to scan a QR code on your Android [1]

Over the last decade, QR codes have boomed in popularity. You can find them on restaurant windows, at bus stops, in stores, and even in books.

And as QR codes become more standard, more devices are designed to scan them. That includes smartphones.

And once you’ve scanned the code, you can open or share its URL (the website it points to) freely. 1.

Move the QR code into the frame. If the code is easily scannable, you’ll see the code’s URL appear at the bottom of the frame.

Quick tip: If your camera won’t recognize the QR code, try closing your camera and opening it again, or moving the QR code so it doesn’t take up the entire screen. If your Android device’s camera doesn’t scan the QR code automatically, you’ll need to use Google Lens, a feature that lets you search the web with your camera, in the Google Search app, which you can download from the Play Store.

Note: You can also download the Google Lens app to scan the QR code, but it’s not available on all Android devices. We’re going to discuss a more universal approach with Google Search.

Just tap Modes at the bottom of the screen, then Lens, and try again. 1.

Tap the camera icon on the right side of the search bar to start Google Lens. 3.

If this is your first time using Lens, you’ll have to give the feature permission to access your media and camera. 4.

If your phone can scan QR codes automatically, the URL will appear over it. Tap the URL or the shutter button – magnifying glass – at the bottom of the screen to immediately go to the website.

If the URL doesn’t show up automatically, tap the shutter button for Lens to search the web. 7.

You’ll also be given three options: If neither of these methods work, the QR code itself might be invalid.

Most Android phones now let you scan QR codes using the built-in camera app, to save you installing a third-party QR code reader. If your phone is running Android 9 (Pie) or later, its camera will offer this feature through integration with Google Lens.

Google Lens will automatically detect and decipher the code and display a link, usually to a web page. Tap this link to open and view the code’s contents.

If nothing happens when you scan a QR code with your camera, you may need to activate Google Lens manually. Go into your camera app’s settings and switch on Google Lens there.

On Samsung phones, which use their own technology for scanning QR codes, ensure that “Scan QR codes” is turned on in the Camera app’s settings. You can also access the “Scan QR code” option by swiping down from the top of your screen to open the Quick Settings tray.

How to scan a QR code with an iPhone or iPad [10]

A QR code (short for Quick Response code) is an array of black and white squares or pixels set in a grid that stores data for a machine to read. A smartphone or camera can quickly process the information contained in a QR code’s specific arrangement of pixels, making it a convenient way to store and access data.

See all Privacy articles. This Article Contains:.

Initially, QR codes were used to enable high-speed scanning and tracking of components during the assembly process. Although the QR code meaning has evolved as compatible technology has matured to provide new ways to engage customers, most QR codes (also called qcodes) are designed simply to transmit URLs.

If you know how to use QR code, scanning it lets you: View a menu in a restaurant.

Read more about a product or service. Download an app on the App Store or Google Play.

Verify login details. Access Wi-Fi by storing SSID, password, and encryption type.

QR codes work by arranging a series of black and white pixels into a unique pattern that encodes a string of data. When scanned, the pattern of the qcode can be translated into human-readable information.

But unlike barcodes’ linear arrangement, QR codes can store much more data, because they’re written both vertically and horizontally. All QR codes have a standard structure that makes information readable.

Quiet Zone: The empty white border around the outside of a QR code. Hinder pattern: The three black squares in the bottom-left, top-left, and top-right corners.

Timing pattern: An L-shaped line that helps to identify individual squares within the whole code, making it possible for a damaged QR code to be read. Version information: Identifies which version of the QR code is being read.

Usually, you don’t need to use a special QR app scanner — smartphones will link to the content in the QR code when you point your camera app at it. If you’re offline or think you’ll need to access the code again, taking a picture of it will make the QR code scan again when you view it later.

Simply view the QR code through the camera and the QR code scanner will take care of the rest. Here’s how to scan a QR code on an iOS device:

Hold the phone so the entire QR code is visible in the frame (you don’t need to take a picture). Once the QR code has been read, a notification will appear at the top of your screen.

Remember that you won’t be able to access the link if you aren’t online. BUt you can take a picture of the QR code to rescan it again later.

This is usually turned on by default, but it may have been switched off accidentally. Here’s how to enable or disable the QR code scanner on an iPhone or iPad:

Tap the toggle next to Scan QR codes so that it’s enabled (green). To disable the QR code scanning feature, turn this toggle off.

Scanning a QR code on an Android phone is easy, and Android’s QR code scanner is automatically enabled. Here’s how to use the QR code scanner on an Android phone or tablet.

Hold the device so the whole QR code is present in the frame (you don’t have to take a picture). Then, tap the decoded link that appears on your screen.

Google Lens is available as a standalone app or through the Google app itself. Here’s how to use the Google QR scanner with Google Lens:

Allow Google to use the camera by tapping Open camera (or tap Search with your camera). You should see a camera view in the app now.

If everything works correctly, you’ll be linked directly to the content, whether it’s a restaurant menu, promotional offer, or a link to a video. If you don’t have access to a smartphone, you can read QR codes from your PC using either a webcam or by opening an image file with the code in it.

In the Start menu search bar, type Microsoft store and click the search result to launch the app. Search for “qr code scanner” in the Microsoft Store and click QR Code Scanner in the search results.

When the app asks for access to the camera, click Yes. You can now scan codes by holding the QR code up to the webcam.

You can also scan a QR barcode with a Mac, but you need to install a third-party app. Here’s what you need to do:

Open the app and hold up the QR code so that it’s fully visible in the frame. The QR code reader will detect the data and share the link with you automatically.

Or, you can save the encoded link to check it out later. Now that you know how to visit a website with a QR code on your Mac, make sure to review your Mac security to help defend against malware and phishing threats.

Some contain only black and white squares, while others have particular symbols in the center. While all QR codes perform the same basic function, some differ in how they read and write information.

QR code: The original version of the QR code created by Denso Wave in the 1990s. Aztec code: Contains concentric squares in the center and doesn’t require a “quiet zone” around the edge.

PDF417: A mix between a QR code and a barcode. Semacode: Has no need for the components of a QR code, like the hinder pattern.

A QR code’s data capacity is determined by storage type, or “mode.” Here are the various storage modes a QR code app can read: Numeric mode: A string of numbers.

Byte mode: 8-bit single-byte code. Kanji mode: Japanese characters.

For example, by making information more readily accessible, QR codes can help improve education practices and enable more integrated healthcare systems. Product packaging: These QR codes can reveal nutritional information or special offers.

Coronavirus tracing: In the UK, as in many other countries, visitors to hospitality venues are invited to scan a QR code upon arrival using a Covid-19 track and trace app. Postal services: QR codes can help you or your postal service track packages and other shipments.

Social media: People can easily share social media profiles and specific content via 24fps QR codes. Using third-party scanning apps for mobile isn’t recommended.

It’s also needlessly complicated — why not just open the camera, point, and scan.

While they record the scanning location, time, and operating system used, they don’t collect any personal information and cannot be hacked. But QR codes are only as safe as the links they contain, and while mobile devices can’t generally get viruses, QR codes can be used as a backdoor for other mobile threats.

If you do fall prey to a dodgy QR code, knowing the signs a phone has been hacked can help you take swift action to prevent the exploit developing into a more serious threat. A common QR code sca.

How to scan a QR code that’s displayed on your screen [15]

QR codes are a theoretically-simple way to send or receive information – they might hold a link to a website or app, contact information, ticket details, or a number of other things, and you can simply scan the QR code with your Android phone to get that data. But QR codes also aren’t things you’ll necessarily encounter regularly, so you might not be sure how to scan one when you do, which rather removes the convenience factor.

But ultimately, no matter what Android phone you have – whether it’s a recent Samsung or an older OnePlus – it’s very quick and easy to scan QR codes, and below we’ll explain exactly how you can read a QR code on your phone. Many Android phones let you scan QR codes direct from the camera app.

That software was launched in 2018, so the majority of recent handsets will be on that version or later. To scan a QR code this way, simply open the camera and point it at the QR code for a few seconds – there’s no need to actually take a photo.

Tapping on that will take you to the contents of the code (such as a website or Google Play Store page). If at first you don’t succeed, try lining the QR code up in the center of the frame and making sure that it’s clearly visible, and that the phone is held steady.

Note that on some Samsung phones you’ll also need to enable Bixby Vision within the camera before QR code scanning will work. To do this, tap the Bixby Vision icon in the top left corner of the camera app.

If you’re still having no luck, then chances are your phone’s native camera app can’t scan QR codes, but not to worry, there are other ways to scan them, detailed below. Google Assistant can also scan QR codes using a tool called Google Lens, just as long as your phone is running Android 8 or above.

This looks a bit like, well, a camera lens. Point Google Lens at the QR code for a second or two and it will highlight the code and display a link to its contents.

As with any other method for scanning a QR code though, you will typically need an internet connection for it to work.

There are many options available, including QR & Barcode Scanner, and QR Code Reader and Scanner, and many of them are free. Just search for ‘QR code scanner’ on the Play Store and you’ll be presented with near endless options.

The exact process will vary from app to app, but will be broadly in line with the methods above – once you’ve opened the app and got its QR scanning screen displayed, just point your camera at the QR code and it should automatically scan and provide you with a link to the contents.

But what if you’re browsing the web on your phone and see a code displayed on your screen. You can still scan it.

This will then display the URL found within the code, giving you the option to follow it.

Unlike the WiFi access points in public areas like coffee shops or airports, our home and work WiFi networks are protected by a password. To connect to these networks, you have to provide the required password.

The same is applicable to the WiFi hotspot created using your Android device. As good as the WiFi password protection is, it can be a bit tedious when you want WiFi access with your family or friends, especially if the password is long and complicated.

To deal with this inconvenience, most WiFi devices have a feature called WPS (WiFi Protected Setup). When using this feature, you have to select the “WiFi Push Button” setting on your Android device and then press the WPS button on your WiFi router (generally located on the backside).

As you can guess, you can’t always run and press the button as soon as someone requests access to your WiFi network. And not to forget, having WPS ON, comes with its own security risks.

When a user scans the QR code or NFC tag, they will be automatically connected to your WiFi network without you giving away your password. Here are some of the best apps you can try to share WiFi without giving away your password.

How to Convert Wi-Fi Password Into QR Code on iPhone with Shortcuts [25]

Have you ever wanted to share your home or work Wi-Fi with your guests without giving away the network password. You’re certainly not alone in this regard, but we’re pleased to inform you that you can now do just that using your iPhone or iPad, thanks to this neat workaround.

Typically, you’ll need to share your Wi-Fi password if you want someone else to access the network. Apple sort of resolved this issue by introducing the ability to share Wi-Fi passwords with other iOS and macOS devices with any modern version of iOS and iPadOS.

In such instances, you’ll need to rely on an iOS or ipadOS shortcut that basically converts your Wi-Fi password into a QR code that you can share with literally anyone, whether they’re on an iPhone, iPad, Android, Mac, Windows PC, Linux machine, or Chromebook. You will need the Shortcuts from the App Store on your iPhone or iPad if you don’t have it already.

There you go. Now you know how to easily share your Wi-Fi passwords with non-Apple users too.

We had to make changes to this shortcut since it wasn’t working upon installation. While the shortcut finished performing the operation successfully, the QR code never showed up on the screen even though a message popped up stating “The QR code is presented below”.

Of course, we could’ve gone with a different shortcut to make it easier for you, but all of them are third-party shortcuts that require you to set your device to allow the installation of untrusted shortcuts, which several users may not be okay with. But, if you live life on the edge, you can install this third-party shortcut called Share Wi-Fi to generate a QR code that your guests can scan.

For instance, there’s a similar shortcut called iCode QR that converts basically anything into a QR code that your friends can scan. There’s a shortcut that can be used to convert videos to GIFs too.

How do I scan QR codes? [26]

QR stands for “Quick Response.”. While they may look simple, QR codes are capable of storing lots of data.

A QR code is a type of barcode that can be read easily by a digital device and which stores information as a series of pixels in a square-shaped grid. QR codes are frequently used to track information about products in a supply chain and – because many smartphones have built-in QR readers – they are often used in marketing and advertising campaigns.

Check out this video on YouTube how to recognize malicious QR codes and protect yourself: The first QR code system was invented in 1994 by the Japanese company Denso Wave, a Toyota subsidiary.

To achieve this, they developed a type of barcode that could encode kanji, kana, and alphanumeric characters. Standard barcodes can only be read in one direction – top to bottom.

But a QR code is read in two directions – top to bottom and right to left. This allows it to house significantly more data.

QR codes can also be used to: The development team behind the QR code wanted to make the code easy to scan so that operatives did not waste time getting it at the right angle.

This led them to choose the iconic square shape that is still used today. Denso Wave made their QR code publicly available and declared they would not exercise their patent rights.

Initial uptake of the idea was slow. however, in 2002, the first mobile phones containing built-in QR readers were marketed in Japan.

In 2020, Denso Wave continued to improve on their original design. Their new QR codes include traceability, brand protection, and anti-forgery measures.

Most smartphones have built-in QR scanners, which are sometimes built in the camera. A QR scanner is simply a way to scan QR codes.

Some older devices may require a particular app to read QR codes – these apps are readily available on the Apple App Store and Google Play. Scanning a QR code using your device is straightforward:

It is also possible to embed a malicious URL into a QR code that directs to a phishing site, where unsuspecting users could disclose personal or financial information. Because humans cannot read QR codes, it is easy for attackers to alter a QR code to point to an alternative resource without being detected.

Aside from opening a website, these actions can include adding contacts or composing emails. This element of surprise can make QR code security threats especially problematic.

Unsuspecting users who scan the code are taken to a malicious web page which could host an exploit kit, leading to device compromise or a spoofed login page to steal user credentials. Some websites do drive-by downloads, so simply visiting the site can initiate a malicious software download.

Since QR codes are used on mobile devices, this increases the potential risks. QR code-generating software does not collect personally identifiable information.

The QR codes themselves can’t be hacked – the security risks associated with QR codes derive from the destination of QR codes rather than the codes themselves. Hackers can create malicious QR codes which send users to fake websites that capture their personal data such as login credentials or even track their geolocation on their phone.

The patterns within QR codes represent binary codes that can be interpreted to reveal the code’s data. A QR reader can identify a standard QR code based on the three large squares outside the QR code.

The QR reader then analyzes the QR code by breaking the whole thing down to a grid. It looks at the individual grid squares and assigns each one a value based on whether it is black or white.

A standard QR code is identifiable based on six components:.

The data it does collect – and which is visible to the code’s creators – includes location, the number of times the code has been scanned and at what times, plus the operating system of the device which scanned the code (i.e., iPhone or Android). QR codes can be used for multiple purposes, but there are four widely accepted versions of QR codes.

The type of mode is communicated via the version information field in the QR code. There are two additional modes which are modifications of the other types:

It is possible to create QR codes in many different shapes and styles, but five types are most commonly found. They all do the same job – they just look slightly different.

QR code – This is the original version of the QR code created by Denso Wave in the 1990s. It’s easy to identify by its three finder patterns in the bottom–left, top–left, and top–right corners.

Aztec code – While it looks similar to a QR code, the Aztec code, developed by Welch Allyn, contains only one finder pattern, right in the middle.

Maxi code – This type of QR code is used by the United States postal service. It’s similar to the Aztec code in that it places the finder pattern in the middle, but it uses a honeycomb pattern instead of squares.

PDF417 – Invented in 1991 by Ynjiun Wang of Symbol Technologies, the oddly named PDF417 predates the QR code by three years. It looks like a mix between a QR code and a barcode and is easily recognizable by its rectangular shape.

Semacode – Developed by a software company of the same name, the Semacode is a data matrix that looks a lot like an ordinary QR code but doesn’t have recognizable finder patterns.

They can also be used to link directly to product pages online. For instance, if you were searching for the exact dress a model was wearing in a poster, a QR code could directly take you to the web page where you could purchase it.

For example, in the UK, visitors to hospitality venues such as bars and restaurants are invited to scan a QR code upon arrival using the NHS Covid-19 tracing app. This is to help trace and stop the spread of the virus.

You may also find QR codes on the packaging for some of your favorite products. These QR codes can reveal information about the product, such as nutritional information or special offers you can use next time you make a purchase.

You’ll also find QR codes used by other businesses that need to keep a close eye on products and supplies, such as the construction, engineering, and retail industries. Postal services around the world also use them.

For example, global fashion brand ASOS have moved entirely to QR codes for tracking refunds. QR codes are also used in schools and colleges to help engage with students.

There’s no telling where and when you might come across a malicious QR code. That’s why it is essential to use a QR Scanner you know you can trust and not download a random one from the app store or online.

The scanner provides QR code authentication and alerts you to potential dangers behind a QR code, such as: Kaspersky QR Scanner still provides everything you need from a QR Scanner, such as adding contacts to your phone.
