In criminal investigation[edit] [1]

John Doe (male) and Jane Doe (female) are multiple-use placeholder names that are used in the United States and the United Kingdom when the true name of a person is unknown or is being intentionally concealed. In the context of law enforcement in the United States, such names are often used to refer to a corpse whose identity is unknown or cannot be confirmed.

Public or “Joe Public”. There are many variants to the above names, including John (or Richard)/Jane Roe, John/Jane Smith, John/Jane Bloggs, and Johnie/Janie Doe or just Baby Doe for children.

In other English-speaking countries, unique placeholder names, numbers or codenames have become more often used in the context of police investigations. This has included the United Kingdom, where usage of “John Doe” originated during the Middle Ages.

Other names, such as “Joe Bloggs” or “John Smith”, have sometimes been informally used as placeholders for an everyman in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. however such names are seldom used in legal or police circles in the same sense as John Doe.

Well-known legal cases named after placeholders include:. Under the legal terminology of Ancient Rome, the names “Numerius Negidius” and “Aulus Agerius” were used in relation to hypothetical defendants and plaintiffs.

The names “John Doe” (or “John Do”) and “Richard Roe” (along with “John Roe”) were regularly invoked in English legal instruments to satisfy technical requirements governing standing and jurisdiction, beginning perhaps as early as the reign of England’s King Edward III (1327–1377). Though the rationale behind the choices of Doe and Roe is unknown, there are many suggested folk etymologies.

The Oxford English Dictionary states that John Doe is “the name given to the fictitious lessee of the plaintiff, in the (now obsolete in the UK) mixed action of ejectment, the fictitious defendant being called Richard Roe”.

Two giants live in Britain’s land, John Doe and Richard Roe, Who always travel hand in hand, John Doe and Richard Roe. Their fee-faw-fum’s an ancient plan To smell the purse of an Englishman, And, ‘ecod, they’ll suck it all they can, John Doe and Richard Roe..

This particular use became obsolete in the UK in 1852:. As is well known, the device of involving real people as notional lessees and ejectors was used to enable freeholders to sue the real ejectors.

Eventually the medieval remedies were (mostly) abolished by the Real Property Limitation Act of 1833. the fictional characters of John Doe and Richard Roe by the Common Law Procedure Act 1852.

In the UK, usage of “John Doe” survives mainly in the form of John Doe injunction or John Doe order (see above).

The first time this form of injunction was used since 1852 in the United Kingdom was in 2005 when lawyers acting for JK Rowling and her publishers obtained an interim order against an unidentified person who had offered to sell chapters of a stolen copy of an unpublished Harry Potter novel to the media.

Unlike the United States, the name “John Doe” does not actually appear in the formal name of the case, for example: X & Y v Persons Unknown HRLR 4.

The baby victim in a 2001 murder case in Kansas City, Missouri, was referred to as Precious Doe.

He had been questioned repeatedly by airport security staff. Another man named John Doe was often suspected of being an incognito celebrity.

In cases where a large number of unidentified individuals are mentioned, numbers may be appended, such as “Doe #2” or “Doe II”. Operation Delego (2009), which targeted an international child sexual abuse ring, cited 21 numbered “John Does”, as well as other people known by the surnames “Doe”, “Roe”,”Hoe” and “Poe”.

“John Stiles”, “Richard Miles” have been used for the third and fourth participants in an action. “Mary Major” has been used in some federal cases in the US.

Less often, other surnames ending in -oe have been used when more than two unknown or unidentified persons are named in U.S. court proceedings, e.g., Poe v.

2011), whose full style is. In Massachusetts, “Mary Moe” is used to refer to pregnant women under the age of 18 petitioning the Superior Court for a judicial bypass exception to the parental consent requirement for abortion.

“Mary Moe cases”. Sometimes “Mary Doe” may be used for the individuals.

Parallels in other countries include:. In 1997, New York City police discovered a decapitated body and were not able to find the killer.

The use and selection of pseudonyms is not standardized in U.S. courts.

Currently there are no court rules about pseudonym use. The rules of civil procedure..

Rule of Civil Procedure 10(a) reads, ‘.. In the complaint, the title of the action shall include the names of all the parties..’ The rule contains no guidance as to what parties should do to keep their names confidential.

Prior to.. 1969, only one Supreme Court case, three court of appeals’ decisions, and one district court decision in the previous quarter-century featured an anonymous individual as the sole or lead plaintiff.

Personal life[edit] [2]

John Nommensen Duchac (born February 25, 1953), known professionally as John Doe, is an American singer, songwriter, actor, poet, guitarist and bass player. Doe co-founded LA punk band X, of which he is still an active member.

As an actor, he has dozens of television appearances and several movies to his credit, including the role of Jeff Parker in the television series Roswell.

In the early 1980s, he performed on two albums by the Flesh Eaters.

As a musician with X, Doe has two feature-length concert films, several music videos, and an extended performance-and-interview sequence in The Decline of Western Civilization, Penelope Spheeris’s seminal documentary about the early-1980s L.A. punk scene.

Along with co-writer Exene Cervenka, Doe composed most of the songs recorded by X. Wild Gift, an album from that band’s heyday, was named “Record of the Year” by Rolling Stone, The Los Angeles Times, and The New York Times.

He also wrote “Cyrano de Berger’s Back” for the Flesh Eaters LP A Minute to Pray, a Second To Die.

In the 1992 movie The Bodyguard (starring Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston), it is Doe’s version of “I Will Always Love You” that plays on the jukebox when Costner’s and Houston’s characters are dancing. It was released on audio cassette by Warner Bros.

He co-wrote and played on the song “Lobotomy” with Tyler Willman for the eponymous 1998 debut studio album of the band Calm Down Juanita.

Augustine”. Both recordings were included on the film’s soundtrack, and the former was prominently featured in the film, with Christian Bale (as Pastor John Rollins) lip-synching Doe’s vocals.

He then joined with Eddie Vedder on a mix of the song “Golden State” in 2008. “The Meanest Man in the World” by Doe was featured in Season 4 of the television series Friday Night Lights and included on the second soundtrack album.

Doe contributed a cover of “Peggy Sue Got Married” to the 2011 tribute album Rave on Buddy Holly.

Doe said that it was made in the desert, in Arizona, and that the genre is psychedelic soul.

The label was founded by The Grahams, who originally met with John Doe to record the session in Austin, TX at the ChurchHouse, produced by David Garza.

, Doe played Jerry Lee Lewis’s cousin-turned-father-in-law J. W.

He starred in the 1992 films Roadside Prophets and Pure Country, and in the 1998 short Lone Greasers. Other movie acting credits include Road House, Vanishing Point, Salvador, Boogie Nights, The Specials, The Good Girl, Gypsy 83, Wyatt Earp, Border Radio, Pure Country, The Outsiders, and Brokedown Palace.

With co-author Tom DeSavia, Doe wrote and compiled stories for a book about the LA punk rock scene from 1977 to 1983. The book, Under the Big Black Sun, incorporated the punk ethos of contributions from other musicians that were part of the scene, people like Exene Cervenka, Jack Grisham, Henry Rollins, Mike Watt, Jane Wiedlin and others who wrote chapters.

A sequel of sorts was released in 2019 entitled More Fun in the New World: The Unmaking and Legacy of L.A. Punk.

Doe was born in Decatur, Illinois. He was married to fellow X member Exene Cervenka between 1980 and 1985.

He revealed to Adam Carolla in a podcast in September 2011 that he resided (at the time) in Fairfax, California. He has three daughters.

Production[edit] [3]

Meet John Doe is a 1941 American comedy-drama film directed and produced by Frank Capra, written by Robert Riskin, and starring Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck. The film is about a “grassroots” political campaign created unwittingly by a newspaper columnist with the involvement of a hired homeless man and pursued by the paper’s wealthy owner.

It was ranked No. 49 in AFI’s 100 Years..

In 1969, the film entered the public domain in the United States because the claimants did not renew its copyright registration in the 28th year after publication. It was the first of two features Capra made for Warner Brothers, after he left Columbia Pictures, the other being Arsenic and Old Lace (1944).

A local newspaper, The Bulletin, is under new management, with columnist Ann Mitchell being one of the staffers dismissed to “streamline” the paper, but not before being told to write one final column. Infuriated, Ann prints a letter from a fictional unemployed “John Doe” threatening suicide on Christmas Eve in protest of society’s ills.

From a number of derelicts who show up at the paper claiming to have written the original letter, Ann and Henry hire John Willoughby, a former baseball player and tramp in need of money to repair his injured arm, to play the role of John Doe. Ann starts to pen a series of articles in Doe’s name, elaborating on the original letter’s ideas of society’s disregard for people in need.

Willoughby gets $50, a new suit of clothes, and a plush hotel suite with his tramp friend “The Colonel”, who launches into an extended diatribe against “helots”, people who are heels trying to sell things, burdening others with ownership, tying them down with responsibilities that require money to pay for them, until they, too, become helots.

Norton, to write radio speeches for Willoughby. Meanwhile, John is offered a $5,000 bribe from the Chronicle to admit the whole thing was a publicity stunt, but ultimately turns it down and delivers the speech Ann has written for him instead.

“John Doe” is recognized at a diner and brought to City Hall, where he’s met by Bert Hanson, who explains how he was inspired by Doe’s words to start a “John Doe club” with his neighbors.

However, Norton secretly plans to channel support for Doe into support for his own national political ambitions. When a John Doe rally is scheduled, with John Doe clubs from throughout the country in attendance, Norton instructs Mitchell to write a speech for Willoughby in which he announces the foundation of a new political party and endorses Norton as its presidential candidate.

He denounces Norton and tries to expose the plot at the rally, but his speech is interrupted by hordes of newsboys carrying a special edition of the Bulletin exposing Doe as a fake. Norton claims Doe had deceived him and the staff of the newspaper, like everyone else, and cuts off the loudspeakers before Doe could defend himself.

Ann, who has fallen in love with John, desperately tries to talk him out of jumping (saying that the first John Doe has already died for the sake of humanity), and Hanson and his neighbors tell him of their plan to restart their John Doe club. Convinced not to kill himself, John leaves, carrying a fainted Ann in his arms, and Henry turns to Norton and says, “There you are, Norton.

Try and lick that. “.

The screenplay was derived from a 1939 film treatment, titled “The Life and Death of John Doe”, written by Richard Connell and Robert Presnell who would go on to be the recipients of the film’s sole Academy Award nomination for Best Original Story. The treatment was based upon Connell’s 1922 Century Magazine story titled “A Reputation”.

Gary Cooper was always Frank Capra’s first choice to play John Doe. Cooper had agreed to the part without reading a script for two reasons: He had enjoyed working with Capra on their earlier collaboration, Mr.

The role of the hardbitten news reporter, however, was initially offered to Ann Sheridan, but the first choice for the role had been turned down by Warner Bros. due to a contract dispute, and Olivia de Havilland was similarly contacted, albeit unsuccessfully.

The composer selected was frequent Capra collaborator Dimitri Tiomkin, who also did the scores for Capra’s Lost Horizon, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington and It’s a Wonderful Life.

Bosley Crowther, the film critic for The New York Times wrote that John Willoughby was just the latest of the everyman that Frank Capra had portrayed in earlier films:. With an excellent script by Mr.

Capra has produced a film which is eloquent with affection for gentle people, for the plain, unimpressive little people who want reassurance and faith. Many of his camera devices are magnificent in the scope of their suggestion, and always he tells his story well, with his customary expert spacing of comedy and serious drama.

In the Variety review, there was a more critical look at the plot:. The synthetic fabric of the story is the weakness of the production, despite the magnificence of the Frank Capra-directed superstructure.

The film is recognized by American Film Institute in these lists:. Meet John Doe was dramatized as a radio play on the September 28, 1941 broadcast of The Screen Guild Theater, starring Gary Cooper, Barbara Stanwyck and Edward Arnold in their original roles.

A musical stage version of the film, written by Eddie Sugarman and composed by Andrew Gerle, was produced by Ford’s Theatre in Washington, DC, from March 16 to May 20, 2007, featuring Heidi Blickenstaff as Ann Mitchell and James Moye as John Willoughby/John Doe. Donna Lynne Champlin had previously appeared as Ann Mitchell in workshop versions of the show.

Due to this production, R&H Theatricals has licensed the show for future productions.

In 1945 Capra and Riskin sold all rights in Meet John Doe to Sherman S. Krellberg’s Goodwill Pictures, a New York distributor.

Copyright in the film was not renewed and it fell into the public domain in 1969.

studio print.

In 2001 Ken Barnes’ Laureate Presentations undertook a digital restoration of the best available European print. This was released on DVD by Sanctuary in the UK and by VCI in the US.

Linguistic role[edit] [4]

Placeholder names are intentionally overly generic and ambiguous terms referring to things, places, or people, the names of which or of whom do not actually exist. are temporarily forgotten, or are unimportant.

to de-emphasize in which event the precise specification thereof is otherwise impossible, or to deliberately expunge.

These placeholders typically function grammatically as nouns and can be used for people (e.g. John Doe, Jane Doe), objects (e.g.

Anytown, USA). They share a property with pronouns because their referents must be supplied by context.

In their Dictionary of American Slang (1960), Stuart Berg Flexner and Harold Wentworth use the term kadigan for placeholder words. They define “kadigan” as a synonym for thingamajig.

Espy, though others, such as David Annis, also used it (or cadigans) in their writing. Its etymology is obscure—Flexner and Wentworth related it to the generic word gin for engine (as in the cotton gin).

Hypernyms (words for generic categories, such as “flower” for tulips and roses) may also be used in this function of a placeholder, but they are not considered to be kadigans.

In formal speech and writing, words like accessory, paraphernalia, artifact, instrument, or utensil are preferred. these words serve substantially the same function, but differ in connotation.

Most of these words can be documented in at least the 19th century. Edgar Allan Poe wrote a short story entitled “The Literary Life of Thingum Bob, Esq.”, showing that particular form to be in familiar use in the United States in the 1840s.

Gilbert makes the Lord High Executioner sing of a “little list” which includes:..

Some fields have their own specific placeholder terminology. For example, “widget” in economics, engineering and electronics, or “Blackacre” and “John Doe” or “Jane Doe” in law.

Placeholder names are commonly used in computing:. Certain domain names in the format example.tld (such as example.com, example.net, and example.org) are officially reserved as placeholders for the purpose of presentation.

Placeholders such as Main Street, Your County, and Anytown are often used in sample mailing addresses. Ruritania is commonly used as a placeholder country.

Something-stan, where something is often profanity, is commonly used as a placeholder for a Middle Eastern or South Asian country or for a politically disliked portion of one’s own country. Example – Carjackastan for a place with high rates of automobile theft.

Timbuktu, which is also a real city in the country of Mali, is often used to mean a place that is far away, in the middle of nowhere, or exotic.

that is unlikely to have been heard of. Another example is East Cupcake to refer to a generic small town in the Midwestern United States.

Similarly, the boondocks or the boonies are used in American English to refer to very rural areas without many inhabitants.

The similar Australian English Woop Woop, (or, less frequently, Woop Woops) can refer to any remote location, or outback town or district. Another New Zealand English term with a similar use is Waikikamukau (“Why kick a moo-cow”), a generic name for a small rural town.

In British English, Bongo Bongo Land (or Bongo-bongo Land) is a pejorative term used to refer to Third World countries, particularly in Africa, or to a fictional such country.

In chemistry, tentatively discovered or hypothetical elements were assigned provisional names until their existence confirmed. They were created using the prefix eka-.

Having thought it through a bit, Google helped and I found this article on the FamilySearch Wiki that is adapted from a print article by respected genealogist, Anthony Camp. Although it is about bonds on marriage licences and the original question is about probate bonds in particular, I see no reason why what applies to one bond type shouldn’t apply to them all.

The bond, sworn “by two sufficient witnesses”.. pledged to forfeit a large sum of money (ranging from £40 to £200), if there was any consanguinity (a relationship within the prohibited degrees) between the parties or any pre-contract to another person.

The second bondsman soon became a formality, any convenient person acting. Later the second bondsman was often completely fictitious, names like John Doe and Richard Row being used.

My emphasis in italics. Thus it suggests to me that there was indeed a requirement for two bondsmen but the procedures around the second bondsman became somewhat informal, reducing, at the extreme, to fictitious names.

Personal interpretation – the risk associated with a fictitious second bondsman is surely not material. The objective of the bond is to concentrate the mind of the bondsmen on ensuring due process is followed on the marriage or probate.

The only risk is if (a) probate or marriage goes wrong and (b) the first bondsman is dead or cannot otherwise pay. Presumably the Church authorities would not accept a bond signed by a pauper in the first place so would need to feel some sort of confidence that the bondsman could pay and that this was therefore a genuine deterrent.

The “Example Man” [7]

If you don’t want to keep somebody’s name anonymous or if you simply need a placeholder, a common name to use is John Doe for men and Jane Doe for women, or Joe Bloggs or John Smith… There’s quite a list. How do we do it in Germany.

The Muster of the Personalausweis. There is only an official female version.

(Image public domain). In Germany, we almost always use two simple ones: Max Mustermann for men and Erika Mustermann for women.

Sometimes you also see Otto Normalverbraucher (Otto “Normal Consumer”). We’ve written about placeholder names before, see this post for more examples.

Unlike English, the name isn’t chosen for how popular it is. Mustermann is a rare name, and is easily recognised in Germany as the placeholder.

Apparently, there are multiple Erika Mustermann as well. The most famous use of this example name is the Personalausweis (identification card) that every German has.

However, the most famous is Erika Mustermann, since she has been used consistently in all kinds of government IDs, from soldiers to diplomats to Flüchtlinge (refugees). While all other Ausweise say she was born in Berlin, the Flüchtlingsausweis states Damaskus as the Geburtsort (place of birth).

At first, Erika was born in München (Munich), not Berlin. She was 1.76 meters in height, though she later shrank to 1.72 meters and even 1.60 meters.

There is particularly special about this day, it is probably just a random date that was chosen after the Second World War. In 1997, this changed to August 12, 1957.

Her home is in the Heidestraße 17 in München, though that changed too. In 1986 and 1997, she lived in the Nußhäherstraße 10 in München, in 2007 back in the Heidestraße 17, though now in Köln (Cologne).

Her picture changed multiple times over this period. The woman on the picture is not a real Erika Mustermann, of course.

Erika Mustermann received Liebesbriefe (love letters), and many joking articles have been written about the relationship between Erika and Max. My favourite is one from Der Postillon.

She now lives with John in Miami, while Max takes care of their 1.56 children. Who exactly is behind the picture is not clear, but since 1987 it is the same woman that decorates the model ID card.

Frau Mustermann (Mrs Mustermann) is known as Mustermann, geb. Gabler (Mustermann, born Gabler).

The example chosen for Germany is therefore the traditional image of a married woman. Not everybody is happy with that, and you sometimes see the term Musterfrau used, without a “born” label.

Though their first names are different: Maria in Austria and Alexandra in Switzerland. Muster Everything.

While the Personalausweis only makes up some of the information, any non-governmental examples often go all-out. Musterstraße 1 (model street), Musterstadt (model city) and postal code 12345.

Circumstances of Discovery [13]

This is such a strange and mostly sad story, though there are some good parts. I do follow a lot of missing & unidentified persons pages and groups on Facebook.

Some of these stories stick with you or stand out. Most are just devastating, some have miraculous, happy endings, years later.

When I started photo restorations, I wanted to be able to also highlight important stories and people that need recognition or for their stories to be told.

He was found wandering an alley in 1945, passed away in 1993, and continues to remain unnamed, and unclaimed.

Police found a teen-age boy in the early morning hours of October 11, 1945, in Jacksonville, Illinois. Unable to communicate, the deaf and mute teenager was labeled “feeble minded” and sentenced by a judge to the Lincoln State School and Colony in Jacksonville.

Deaf, mute, and later blind, the young black man survived beatings, hunger, overcrowding, and the dehumanizing treatment that characterized state institutions through the 1950s. In spite of his environment, he made friends, took on responsibilities, and developed a sense of humor.

He had a straw hat he loved to wear, and carried a backpack with his collection of rings, glasses, and silverware with him everywhere. Possible hints to his identity include his ‘scrawling “Lewis”‘ and his ‘pantomimed, wild accounts of foot-stomping jazz bars and circus parades.’.

Officials believe he was around 64 years old at the time. After reading a story about him in the New York Times, acclaimed singer-songwriter Mary Chapin Carpenter wrote and recorded “John Doe No.

Award-winning journalist Dave Bakke wrote God Knows His Name: The True Story of John Doe No. 24.

Found by police wandering the streets of Jacksonville, IL early in the morning of Oct. 11, 1945.

According to the police report, the name “George Dunkley” was written in the young man’s vest when he was picked up, so that might have been his name. However, the records also show that no one by that name was ever reported missing, so “Doe” may have gotten the vest from someone else.

He soon became blind also, possibly from diabetes but also possibly from the abuse and mistreatment he got in the institution: beatings, hunger, overcrowding, and the generally dehumanizing treatment of inmates.

During his stay in the Springfield ARC Center, the surname “Boyd” (i.e., John Doe Boyd) was assigned for reasons now unknown. In 1993, he had surgery for colon cancer, but his health continued to decline and he died of a stroke 3 months later.

His story is told in the book God Knows His Name: the True Story of John Doe no.24 (2000). Dec.

The mystery of John Doe No. 24 outlived him.

There were no answers when he died last week. He was unable to speak, his relatives could not be found and he was put in an institution.

24 because he was the 24th unidentified man in the state’s mental health system. Officials believe he was 64 when he died of a stroke last Sunday at the Sharon Oaks nursing home in Peoria.

Miller, the nursing home administrator. “You wonder how often it happens.”.

by Mr. David Bakke (Author), Mary Chapin Carpenter (Foreword).

24 through research into a half-century of the state mental health system, personal interviews with people who knew him at various points during his life, and sixteen black-and-white illustrations. After reading a story about John Doe in the New York Times, acclaimed singer-songwriter Mary Chapin Carpenter wrote and recorded “John Doe No.

She contributes a foreword to this book. As death approached for the man known only as John Doe No.

“Ah, well,” she said, “God knows his name.”. In reading the preview of the book, I read some things I hadn’t heard before.

Here are a few screen shots, There’s a LOT more info in the link to the book above. Lyrics.

24 And they all shook their heads in pityFor a world so silent and darkWell, there’s no doubt that life’s a mysteryBut so too is the human heart And it was my heart’s own perfumeWhen the crape jasmine bloomed on St.

——————————————. I’m not really sure what my theory is on why he was never identified.

There are so many unclaimed, unidentified loved ones waiting to be named out there. I do wonder if his caretaker, mother or otherwise had passed away.

Maybe they were unable to care for him and hoped for the best. but to raise him until he was a teenager and then give up, seems sort of unlikely to me.

It’s just so strange and sad. I am glad he seemed to have some genuine nurses that really cared for him in the end.

Someone had to be missing him.

4 Ways You Can Use Account Collections [14]

Did you know that you need only one email to communicate in the name of different retailers or sales reps.

You’ll save yourself valuable time and avoid repetitive workloads. How.

An account collection is a group of information (like email, phone number, name, address) about specific retailers, sales reps, customer success reps. You use this info as variables in your emails and it changes depending on your contact.

You’ll send each customer an email from the retailer or sales rep that is relevant to them. For example, if Anna lives in London, she’ll want to hear and talk to the sales rep that is located there and not the one in Berlin.

Let’s say that you have retailers in different cities across the country. Each of these retailers has sales representatives that communicate with the customers that live in its area.

To keep our example short and simple, we’ll have three retailers, each with one sales representative.

You need the email campaign to include details about the service you are promoting, plus contact information for your sales representatives.

It makes sense that each customer gets this email from the sales representative from their nearest retailer. That way they can contact the right person for more information and schedule an appointment if interested.

Here’s how that email would look when you add your retailer collection variables. Each variable that you have chosen to use in the email, will be replaced with the sales rep and retailer information that is relevant to each customer.

If Anna has bought a hybrid car from Retailer A, she’ll receive the email from John Doe and she’ll see all of John’s information, like his photo, email [email protected], and phone +12 XXX XXXX she can reach out to. This means that using the one email campaign you created, you’ll send out hundreds or thousands of personalized emails tailored to each customer based on the retailer they belong to.

There are 4 major ways you can use your account collection in Loopify: Why do we say dynamic.

Because they are variables, they will change based on the contact and the collection they are a part of. This will turn a single email campaign into multiple versions of the email, with different email senders, different images, links, and other info.

It makes the process of creating email campaigns super easy and fast while including all the necessary information for your customers. Want to see how Loopify can help you and your retailers grow based on your business’s challenges and needs.
