In my work supporting faculty, I have learned that professors always appreciate strategies to make their teaching more efficient. Many times, learning a new educational technology tool is time-consuming.

QR codes (short for “quick response”) are square-shaped codes that many of us use for restaurant menus, concert tickets, and church donations. We have seen them at bus stops, outside storefronts, and on event flyers.

QR codes can be used to share materials with students and to engage students in active learning activities. They provide a quick way to access a webpage that could be the syllabus, a poll, a list of resources, or a shared online space for a brainstorming activity.

And most students will know what to do when they see a QR code.

While everyone is arriving and getting settled, students scan the QR code and land on a page where the professor has put the agenda for today’s lesson, a couple of reminders, and an entry ticket. The entry ticket asks students to answer a question.

Davidson and Katopodis (2022) note in the New College Classroom “activities that help students think deeply about the ways in which they learn best can be among the most valuable in the entire college experience” (pp. 101-102).

They are posted on a shared digital board such as Padlet, a Google doc, or Jamboard that everyone can contribute to and read. The questions do not have right or wrong answers.

The professor starts the class by asking two volunteers to elaborate on their answers and reminds everyone that the board will remain open for all to post. Then, the instructor proceeds to conduct a short lecture where course materials such as the syllabus, slides, or videos might be shared with everyone through a QR code (see Figure 1).

They could also save the URL of the video to view for a second time. During class, the professor might pause lecturing for an active learning exercise or to check for understanding.

If students are working in groups, the QR code could lead to detailed instructions and a shared space where they are collaboratively creating a resource or documenting their discussion. This shared space could be a Google slide, a Padlet wall, or a Jamboard frame.

At the end of class, the professor displays one more QR code that leads to a short survey asking students to reflect on what they have learned, how it connects with their lives, and what questions remain in their minds. Figure 2 shows a Know-Wonder-Learn activity using Jamboard.

Students are asked to write what they already know and what they want to know about a topic. The last slide can be used at the end of a class session when students are asked to write what they have learned.

While all the activities that I propose in my imaginary class can be done by displaying a URL on the screen, it is more time-consuming and error-prone to ask students to type a long string of letters and numbers than to point to a QR code and tap on a phone screen.

If students are working in groups, it is very likely that at least one student has a phone and is able to post the outcome of their collaborative work. As with any technology used in classes, we need to consider equity, accessibility and security issues.

For example, students can show colored index cards or use American sign language to indicate their answers to multiple-choice questions. Students can also write down their answers on a sheet of paper that they hand in at the end of the class or input their answers on a digital board after class.

Asking students to work in small groups and submit one collective or representative answer is another way to allow participation for students who might not have equipment or Internet connection. Professors should ensure that all students have access and can complete QR code activities if they decide to tie participation to students’ grades.

Before clicking on web links, we need to consider who is sharing them and for what purpose. Similar considerations should be made before scanning QR codes.

QR code activities can be preceded by sharing practical tips on cybersecurity. A QR code of any webpage can be easily generated using the Chrome web browser.

The resulting image can be downloaded to a computer and added to slides, flyers, handouts, or course sites. Professors who prefer more whimsical QR codes of different colors and shapes can use online QR code generators such as QRcode-monkey, QR-code-generator or Me-QR.

Online boards such as Padlet or Wakelet also provide QR codes as part of their sharing options. Fast and accurate access to a resource saves time and prevents confusion.

Click on the scan QR Code icon and you can point your camera at a QR Code to open up the associated action. Scanning QR Codes on Android phones can be done without a QR Code scanner app if the smartphone is running on Android 8 or Android 9.

Google Lens. Google Lens is a native feature in the Camera app.

You will see a notification that you can then click on to perform the intended action.

You can also scan a QR Code from your Image Gallery with Google Lens. Open your Image Gallery and click on the Google Lens icon to open the associated link.

Hold down the Home button to activate Screen Search and click on ‘What’s on My Screen.’ This ensures the corresponding action attached to the QR Code pops up on the screen. Google Lens.

Google Lens allows users to identify more than just QR codes. Once the camera app is opened, the Google Lens must be activated for the QR Codes to be scanned.

Google Assistant. If you already have the Google Assistant, there is no need to download the Google Lens app.

On Android 7, Google Lens is not available as a native feature and you need an additional app to scan QR Codes. These apps are readily available in the Google Play Store and are free.

The Amazon app has an QR Code scan icon on the homepage that allow you to scan all QR Codes. A note is displayed that lets you know that the QR Code is an external QR Code.

The QR Code scanner is only able to scan URL or Website QR Codes. Open the Pinterest app and click on the camera icon on the search bar on top.

The app will scan the QR Code and immediately open the associated campaign. You can also save the website as a pin on Pinterest.

It cannot open other types of QR Codes. However, it allows you to import a QR Code from your image gallery.

Users can scan WeChat QR codes to add friends and all other QR Codes. Facebook also has an in-built QR Code reader.

Just like Pinterest and Amazon, you can only scan URL and Website QR Codes. While the QR code scanner can fetch the information stored in the QR Code, it cannot help you make a call or send an SMS.

iPhone users can use Google Chrome to scan a QR Code as well. The browser has a QR Code scanner icon and opens up into a QR Code scanner.

For instance, it can fetch all the information stored in a vCard QR Code but cannot help you store the information in your iPhone. As some of you may know, I’m an active member of many Facebook groups for interpreters and translators. I recently posted about how I meet my agencies’ requirement as a freelance medical interpreter for having my vaccine record on my person at all times during assignments in healthcare facilities.

Now, all I have to do is open the SMART Health Card Verifier app on my phone, scan the back of my badge, and voila. My vaccine record is displayed.

While the vaccine card holder I purchased on Etsy was super cute, it often got in the way and, because I interpret a lot in pediatrics, ended up in the hands (and sometimes in vain, in the mouths) of the kiddos I’d interpret for. Fortunately I purchased a holder made of a material that could be wiped down, but still, annoying.

This is understandable because for us in-person medical interpreters, a QR code is a far more convenient way to provide your proof of vaccination. It’s also far more tamper-proof than a hand-written vaccine card.

Whether or not you can get your vaccine record in QR code form depends on a number of factors, such as where you were vaccinated (i.e. a clinic, local health department event, or pharmacy), and what state you were vaccinated in.

Below I’ve compiled a list of the information I have at this time for which states supply QR codes directly or partner with an app or service to do so.

Carbon Health, CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, and more popular retail pharmacies offer QR code versions of your vaccine record if you were vaccinated with them (source). Consult with the pharmacy that provided you your COVID-19 vaccine(s) to see if they have this option.

Furthermore, Samsung PayCommon supposedly now has a feature integrated with CommonHealth that will generate a QR code for your vaccine card. If you try these methods out and want to share feedback on how it works, please let me know so I can post it here.

You can also generate a QR code for free of any link or file here, but keep in mind that this is not as secure as the other options mentioned thus far. It may or may not be viewable to the public and your vaccine card likely contains sensitive information you want to keep from being made public.

If none of these options work for you but you’d still like to have a digital copy of your vaccine card, you can always scan it or snap a photo of it and save it on your phone. It might not be the most high-tech solution ever, but it gets the job done.

A scam known as ‘attagging’ involves pasting new QR codes over existing ones, for example by pasting a label over the QR code on a poster. The new code could link to malicious software that might then access your camera or your personal data.

Learning QR code generation and scanning capabilities are available for the Cornerstone CSX app. Administrators can configure instructor-led training (ILT) sessions to support QR code functionality for easy session attendance tracking.

The Scan tab leverages a device’s camera, allowing learners to scan a printed or digital display of an individual session part’s QR code. Users will be asked permission for the Cornerstone CSX app to access their device’s camera in order to scan QR codes.

The instructor must submit the roster for the session in order for attended users to be marked complete.

The My QR Code tab displays a unique QR code belonging to the learner, the learner’s first and last name, and the learner’s profile photo. This QR code can be scanned by an instructor or administrator to capture attendance.

Android users can save their QR code to their device’s photos.

The Instructor tab is only available to users with either the permission to view sessions or users in the Instructor security role. When a user taps the Instructor tab, the tab displays a list of session parts the user is conducting on that day, based on the user’s device time and time zone.

When the instructor or administrator taps a session part, a scanner opens, allowing them to scan the QR codes of the session part’s registered attendees and capture their attendance.

Instead of viewing the sessions they are conducting that day, they can search for the session parts specific to a session’s locator number. Note: The Search bar respects any constraints applied to the user’s permission to view ILT sessions.

Let’s face it: QR codes are everywhere now, and they’re popping up in elementary school classrooms right and left. These nifty little boxes got some serious mojo as the pandemic shook the world, and the result is QR code mania.

How do you make a QR code for your classroom, and heck, what IS a QR code.

OK, let’s just start with the basics (feel free to skip over this section if you already know the answer here, but some folks are still saying Q-what now, and we’re here for y’all too. ).

But unlike a barcode, a QR code is 2-D instead of one-dimensional, which makes it much, much more sophisticated. QR codes can be scanned with a device such as your smartphone or tablet to access apps or coupons, make payments, and more, and you can use them in the classroom to send your students to websites, unlock information on your bulletin boards, and well … a lot of other things.

For about 20+ years, the QR code sort of languished in obscurity, but with the pandemic — and the need to reduce touching — QR codes are suddenly EVERYWHERE. And yes, that includes education.

Creating QR codes for students is pretty simple, we promise. There are plenty of free sites out there to create QR codes for your students, and you can just do a quick Google search.

A few things you’ll want to keep in mind — most free QR codes generators will allow you to make a static QR code that links to one website and cannot be changed. If you want to create what are called dynamic QR codes — meaning you’ll be able to change what they link to in the future — you are likely to be charged.

This free QR code generator is super simple to use — just enter the link you want the QR code to open or the text or file you want the QR code to show your students, and it will create the code for your kids in seconds. It will even allow you to add colorful frames and text to encourage your students to scan it.

Back-to-school is a perfect time to introduce QR codes and prepare students to use them throughout the school year. And what better way to introduce them than with a QR code-style back-to-school activity.

Create a fast-finishers’ corner or a bulletin board where QR codes reveal an extension activity when a student scans it. Color-coordinate the activities for each subject area.

Assign “prices” to items around the classroom for students, and give each of your students a budget so they can go “shopping.” You can use the coin manipulatives from your math textbook or simply give them a number that they then have to keep in mind as they “shop.”.

Extra Idea: Create a table for students to record their “purchases” and track their total spend. Make your regular old worksheets come alive by adding QR codes that take students off the page and onto a relevant website, interactive game, or video.

You can’t be there when students are doing their homework … but your QR codes can be. Create QR codes that link to the specific strategies or information needed to support student learning (for example, reading strategies, spelling strategies, or mathematics strategies).

Teaching parts of the body, parts of a machine, or even parts of the world gets a lot more fun when you incorporate a QR code activity.

The key to this QR learning activity is that each code reveals a different question or activity. Create cubes for reflection questions, journal questions, brain break activities, or fast-finisher tasks … there are countless applications.

Incorporate QR codes into student work presentations so that they can be accessed by their peers. For example, if you want to share book reviews, display a picture of the book cover with a QR code that links to the student’s review online.

My job requires me to be up to speed with every new update and feature of the most personally invasive technologies the world has ever seen. I spend my business life zeroing in on and leveraging the intersection of human nature and user data to drive desired results for my clients.

When you’re “in it” to the extent I am in your work life, it’s only natural to want to push back against technological “advancements” in your personal life. Add to that my natural affinity for all things vintage, analog and tactile, and my personal life is profoundly luddite compared to my professional life.

Until the 2020 shutdowns, I had done a pretty good job of avoiding modern conveniences away from work, but the health and safety protocols of many businesses forced me to finally confront a technology I had previously refused to be a part of: the QR code. Early into the pandemic, I ordered an item for pickup at Bass Pro Shops.

Suddenly, I was 105 years old.

” Then, a real-life geriatric pulled me aside and explained the process to me as I stood there, still scowling.

I hated being told to use it, I hated having an old man explain something I otherwise had no idea how to do, and I hated the process of using my phone’s camera to connect with my browser. Beyond hating being forced to adapt to the future (not that QR codes are particularly new), I didn’t think it was a convenient user experience, period.

If we’re supposedly living in the future, WHY AM I GOING THROUGH ALL THESE STEPS. I thought the benefit of QR codes was to make internet travel fast and easy – what the hell are all these steps about.

Once you’re forced to use a QR code against your will, you start noticing them everywhere. I truly can’t understand how they’ve become so widely used when the user experience is so poor.

How on earth does that work.

Even if you’re determined to use that code instead of just Googling the brand you see on the billboard, is it even possible.

Are you supposed to pull over on the highway and scan from the shoulder. Is anyone tracking the usage of these high-stakes QR codes.

Here’s my solution: don’t default. Choose the right tool for the job and the audience.

In a situation like a highway billboard, scrap the QR codes altogether and just get better at establishing clear URL naming conventions and using redirecting vanity domains. Sure, it might require a little more creativity, but what’s ultimately easier for the user: scanning a QR code from the passing lane, or committing a straight-forward URL (like site.com/billboard) to memory.

I’m not asking you to change the fact I was forcibly coerced into using technology – that ship has sailed, along with my dignity. What I am asking is that you match solutions to the problem.

If I’m going to be forced to step out of my comfort zone, it needs to be worth it. And right now, the QR code isn’t up to snuff.

Great. If not, I suggest we change QR’s meaning from “quick response” to “quick rage.”.

Here are some of the positives they threw in my face, and I quote: So there you have it – there are some use cases where QR codes do an okay job.

I still say there’s work to be done to clean up the user experience – like actually thinking about the use case and user.

It’s a company that uses QR codes on gravestones so that you can expand your epitaph.

Just a thought.

A few years back, QR codes, 2-dimensional “quick response” barcodes traditionally made up of black squares placed on a white square grid, were touted as the next big thing: you could use them to quickly scan a URL in a magazine or on a poster and read more information about the product. However, they never caught on and they have pretty much fallen into oblivion.

That is, in the US. In China QR codes are ubiquitous, partly due to the highly popular WeChat service, which had 700 million users in April 2016.

Our study participants also reported using the shake gesture in WeChat to interact with various TV shows and businesses, or to get more information about a song. Why are these interactions widespread in China, yet they never caught on in the US.

How do you make an interaction technique adopted by a wide variety of people. Three conditions need to be satisfied:

In the US, to scan a QR code encountered on the street, in a store, or in a magazine, you’d need a QR-code scanner — that is, you’d need to install a special application dedicated to this operation. Just taking a picture of the code with the phone’s camera won’t work.

In contrast, in China, WeChat’s mobile application has had an embedded QR-code scanner since 2012, so the millions of WeChat users don’t need to install any special app to have access to this functionality — they can simply take advantage of the preinstalled WeChat. But that is not enough — WeChat has many other features that are hardly discoverable and rarely used by its customers.

While users adopted the QR codes in WeChat because they shortened complicated processes, the adoption of the shake gesture took a different path. The shake gesture was available early on in WeChat for connecting with others who were shaking the phone at the same time, and a later plugin supported photo transfer from desktop to phone.

What made WeChat’s shake gesture popular and relatively widespread was a tangible financial motivation. Users shaking the phones at specified moments during the most popular TV show of the year, New Year’s Spring Festival Gala 2014, were offered red envelopes (traditional monetary gifts).

This campaign made the shake gesture well known to a large number of users, and afterwards Tencent could take advantage of its familiarity in other contexts and for other functionalities. Last but not least, WeChat already enjoyed a wide audience when the QR-code scanning and the shake gesture became popular — many millions of users had already installed its app.

In contrast, none of the big mobile players in the US have made any of their central functionality reliant on QR-code reading or on shaking. in fact neither iOS nor Android support QR code scanning in the proprietary apps (such as Camera) that get shipped with the phone.

The other route for increasing motivation — that of offering some direct compensation (the equivalent of red envelopes in China) to those users who perform the gesture — is perhaps less culturally realistic or appealing for American users. In our Chinese diary study we found that, while people did use shake and QR codes fairly regularly, the principal function of these interactions was, however, not earning money or responding to advertisements.

(The term “O2O” — “online to offline” — is often used in the Chinese technology press.). QR codes act as a convenient offline index into the online world: taking a picture of a QR code could expediently take users to the right webpage without having to type in any query (something that’s particularly arduous on mobile devices).

As one user put it, “I used an app which recommended their company’s official account. I don’t want to remember the name of the official account and search – there might be a lot of fake ones.

It’s easier than typing the movie name (or a movie URL) in WeChat, and it offers more information to the readers. Not only can QR codes provide quick access to websites and a replacement for URL typing, but they can also add information to physical objects.

One study participant reported, “I got a gift from a friend and didn’t know how to use it. So I just scanned the QR code to read the instructions (and awkwardly also saw the price).”.

Not only do QR codes serve as an index into the online world, but they can also act as validations for processes that happened only virtually. For instance, a QR code can be a proof of purchase for a ticket that was bought online and never printed.

The shake gesture also allows people to link the physical world to the online one and augment it, but usually the context — the timing or the location — of the interaction determines how the gesture is interpreted by WeChat. For example, people can shake their phones in the proximity of a store and WeChat will give them coupons or discounts about that store, or will provide information that is relevant to customers (e.g., parking, current sales).

Shaking the phone while a song is being played will help the listener identify the song. People (collocated or not) could shake their phones simultaneously to exchange contact information and befriend each other on WeChat — this method makes it easy for complete strangers to connect if they wish to meet new people.

Both WeChat Pay and AliPay, the two major online payment services in China, support the generation of a QR code for getting paid or sending money to a random person or business. Thus, in a store, people can scan the merchant’s QR code and pay it automatically using WeChat.

Small business with no credit card support can still enable cash-free transactions through QR codes. During our diary study, about a third of WeChat users’ activities were payments.

Many of our diary participants commented on the convenience of using QR codes for payment: “I just wanted to grab some vegetables to cook for dinner in the market.

It’s much more convenient to take out my phone in my pocket.”. “All I need to do is scan the code, no more changes and coins.

Although to a lesser extent, QR codes are also used for online payment on the desktop or on other sites (similarly to checking out with PayPal in the US): people use an app such as WeChat or AliPay to scan a uniquely generated QR code presented by the site at checkout. Once users scan the QR code, their money is sent by WeChat to the site, and the payment is completed.

The assumption is that users will be always logged in to WeChat on their smartphone. When they want to log in to WeChat on a different device (e.g., tablet or desktop), instead of typing their credentials, they could use WeChat’s phone app to scan a QR code presented on the second device.
