Aimie Allen-Atkinson (born 5 June 1987) is an English stage actress and singer. She is known for portraying the role of Katherine Howard in British comedy musical Six on the original UK tour and in the West End production at the Arts Theatre, Lyric Theatre and Vaudeville Theatre, portraying Vivian Ward in the West End production of Pretty Woman, as well as forming part of pop girl group SVN.

Atkinson was born to parents Faith Allen and Tom Atkinson in Stevenage, England. Her father played part-time in a rock band, which encouraged her to begin singing from a young age.

Having studied to GCSE level, she left school to complete a BTEC in Performing Arts at Susi Earnshaw Theatre School and then worked as an admin assistant in a music publishing company. She also ran a franchise for the Stagecraft school in Stevenage.

After agreeing with a friend whilst studying at the Arts Educational School that both should apply to the BBC Radio 2 Voice of Musical Theatre competition, Atkinson was told that she could only apply for the amateur competition. After winning that, she joined a final competition against the final professional contestants – those with at least five years of stage experience – and also won that.

Aged 19, Atkinson left Arts Educational and became a full-time stage actress, taking her first professional job in Howard Goodall’s Days of Hope at the King’s Head Theatre. She then took on various parts, before starting an intensive course in musical theatre at the Royal Academy of Music.

Subsequently, landing a part in a musical as a sassy 40-year-old singer, the producer of the show then asked Atkinson to audition for the role of Daniela in the musical In The Heights, which she subsequently played at the King’s Cross Theatre. She has since played Princess Jasmine in Aladdin alongside Priscilla Presley, Serena in Legally Blonde at Kilworth House, and Snow White opposite Jerry Hall at Richmond Theatre.

On 13 February 2020, Atkinson began playing the role of Vivian Ward in the West End production of Pretty Woman: The Musical alongside Danny Mac at the Piccadilly Theatre. The show later officially opened on 2 March 2020, but closed only two weeks later due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The show closed in June 2023 and announced a UK and Ireland tour.

Cast included Atkinson as Rem, Adam Pascal as Ryuk, Frances Mayli McCann as Lisa, Dean John-Wilson as L and Joaquin Pedro Valdes as Light. The show is due to trasfer at the Lyric Theatre in September 2023 for six additional performances with Georgie Maguire, Jessica Lee and Carl Man taking on the roles of Ryuk, Misa and alternate L respectively.

Atkinson released her debut studio album Step Inside of Love with Jay Records in 2017. As a member of the girl group Goldstone, she competed in Eurovision: You Decide 2018 with the song “I Feel The Love”.

I saw the film version of Chicago for the first time this year. While I’d tried to watch it with my family as a kid, my parents, both lawyers, turned it off, explaining that the movie did a horrible job at depicting how the law actually worked.

Chicago is incredibly realistic. If anything, it’s as dramatic as 1920s Chicago legal history, which inspired the show.

They’re inspired by the hundreds of women who committed similar crimes in 1920s Chicago, and instead of becoming pariahs, they became celebrities. In the musical, Roxie and Velma compete for the attention of smooth-talking lawyer Billy Flynn, who gets their stories on every city newspaper’s front page.

What parts of Chicago are accurate and what’s just all that jazz. Read on to find out.

Picture this: It’s 1923, and there have been three Presidents in three years. The 18th Amendment (Prohibition) is in effect, so you can’t even drink (legally) as you complain about the revolving door of leaders.

Chicago is set in this landscape, which clearly influences the musical. Velma embodies changing gender roles.

Plus, amid all that sociopolitical turmoil, it’s no wonder that people wanted something to distract and entertain them. Chicago residents didn’t have true crime podcasts or TikTok investigations back then, but they had newspapers and a willingness to devour juicy stories of sordid crimes.

The Chicago musical was inspired by Maurine Dallas Watkins’s 1926 play, which, in turn, was inspired by two real-life trials: those of Beulah Annan and Belva Gaetner. The women inspired Roxie and Velma, respectively: Beulah was a housewife cheating on her mechanic husband (she shot her lover, like Roxie), and Belva was a cabaret singer.

this was changed for the musical, as Velma kills her husband and sister. But Belva, like Velma, did claim she blacked out and doesn’t remember what happened.

Though she was as sensational a reporter as anyone, she took a satirical approach to the Chicago play, making fun of the legal system as an entertainment form. (This is probably because Watkins believed Beulah and Belva were guilty, even though they were acquitted.).

The trend began in 1919, when a woman named Emma Simpson was accused of shooting and killing her husband. Between 1921 and 1930, 186 women were accused of the same crime within Cook County alone.

Chicago isn’t just a legal history musical. The show also embraces 1920s culture, most specifically the rise of jazz music, evolving gender roles, and especially vaudeville revues.

Vaudeville revues were popular before the 1920s, with the dance style’s peak in the mid-1910s. However, women were not widely embraced in the art until the 1920s, when newspapers throughout America began advertising for all-female vaudeville groups, similar to Velma and her sister’s revue or The Six Merry Murderesses.

An emcee introduces each musical number and some scenes in Chicago, as though it was a variety show act. These “performances” include a press conference, Roxie’s trial, and even a hanging.

It was incredibly rare to be convicted for matricide in 1920s Chicago: Of the 186 accused women, only 24 were convicted, and some of those cases were overturned. Only 12 women served their full time and were convicted.

Accused women were thus encouraged to fear little from their trials, besides a possible lack of fame if someone else dominates the headlines at the same time. The American legal system is based on precedent, after all: Previous judgments on cases will be used to determine new judgments.

The true story behind Chicago may seem unbelievable, but similarities remain. Look at modern-day celebrity trials of people like O.J.

Our contemporary obsession with true crime isn’t all that different from the 1920s public’s obsession with the murder trials of hundreds of women, and that’s why Chicago is still such a popular show. It’s a satire of celebrity culture that still exists 100 years later.
