This list is constantly being updated, so use FedEx’s website for accurate information about where does and does not get Sunday deliveries. Simply enter the destination zip code into their checker, and it should tell you whether Sunday deliveries are available in that area or not.

You should get an estimate when purchasing the shipping. Pass this on to the recipient so they know when they need to wait at home for the package.

It costs FedEx more to move your package longer distances, so naturally the rates you pay go up proportionally the further away the customer is from your fulfillment center. If your package is shipping across town, then you may only pay a few dollars.

Most carriers measure shipping zones by mileage, originating at your fulfillment center and ending at the delivery destination. Though the zone structure may vary by specific service, FedEx’s standard shipping zones look something like this:

Paying more can shorten those shipping times. For example, a package shipped across all eight zones with FedEx Express will arrive sooner than one sent via FedEx Ground Economy, but using the Express shipment service will cost you.

If you’re committed to a single distribution center (DC) model, then get the most out of it. If your only DC is near Los Angeles and most of your customers are in the Midwest or on the East Coast, you aren’t doing yourself any favors.

Open more fulfillment centers. Adding more distribution centers near your biggest consumer markets will keep you from paying high prices to ship large volumes over long distances.

Skip some zones. Since FedEx charges you based on how many zones your parcel moves through, you can book a truckload shipment on your own and send your packages closer to the final destination before putting them in the FedEx pipeline.

It will save you some money and might get your packages to their destination faster as well. You can also consider services that use the U.S.

This strategy is most appropriate when shipping items under 15 pounds and when transit times may not be the driving force for the service type. Using USPS doesn’t necessarily mean bypassing the big parcel shippers.

The dust settles  [23]

It was August 20, one month since Patton had begun publicly railing against FedEx’s treatment of the 6,000 contractors — of which he was among the largest — who deliver packages for its Ground service. He had threatened to stop running his 275 trucks, launched a trade organization to lobby for contractors’ interests, and created a group-purchasing alliance to lower costs for essentials like trucks and tires.

He had also warned the whole delivery network would collapse if FedEx didn’t make financial concessions and operational changes, as contractors suffered from fuel-price surges and a poorly planned 2021 holiday season. “Some of the strategies that FedEx Ground has utilized to govern over the last 10 years is creating fear in their contractors of being replaced,” he said on stage.

That’s why we are here together.”. Patton’s talk was one of two keynotes he gave as part of the annual conference his company, Route Consultant, puts on for the many contractors who deliver packages for FedEx’s Ground service.

Days after Patton left Las Vegas, FedEx Ground canceled his contracts, taking away the 225 routes he’d threatened to stop running. It also sued him, alleging he was promoting Route Consultant “by unfairly and wrongfully disparaging” FedEx Ground with “a series of false and misleading statements.”.

“I feel like I’ve said everything that I have to say,” he told Insider.

“I truly believe that God’s given me this business to manage this opportunity,” Patton said in a conference session. “And that has given me the courage to be able to do what we’re doing now.”.

“Some people think that he’s Moses leading them into the promised land,” one veteran contractor told Insider. “There’s a lot of people saying he got what he deserved.”.

Their identities are known to Insider. Now, the question is where they go without him leading the way — and what it means for the future of an already-shaky FedEx.

A former hedge-fund manager, Patton was no ordinary delivery contractor. He owns a mini-empire of delivery-focused businesses, including a truck-leasing-and-repairs company, a driver-training school, a specialty tax-preparation business, and a minority share in a driver-recruiting company.

His company, Route Consultant, helps people launch delivery businesses by aiding with accounting, operations, hiring, and contract negotiations. It also brokers the sale of delivery businesses for contractors who want out.

Many contractors knew him from his Youtube videos. The Route Consultant channel has 6,000 subscribers and posts a webinar every week, which has turned Patton into a niche celebrity.

“I feel like my gifting is to be able to take something complex, and explain it in a simple way,” Patton told Insider in Las Vegas. His admiration of Tony Robbins is evident in his Las Vegas keynote speeches, which were just as much about fear and agency as they were about FedEx.

In Las Vegas, contractors came to the microphone in panel after panel to share similar stories, sometimes fighting tears.

One medium-sized Northeast contractor, who didn’t know if he’d last the year, appreciated hearing that even with his scale, Patton’s delivery business was suffering. “I thought, ‘Holy shit, OK, I don’t feel as bad now,'” he told Insider.

Others were skeptical, wondering if his activism was more in service of his own interests. As the revenue of other contractors has declined, so have the pace and value of the deals Route Consultant arranges.

Because if the network doesn’t survive, then none of my businesses survive,” Patton said in a Q&A session in Las Vegas.

A medium-sized contractor from the West Coast who had purchased multiple routes through Route Consultant weeks before the Las Vegas conference told Insider they weren’t made aware of the problems Patton had been speaking out about for months. “I was a little bit taken aback,” they said about the mood at the event.

When asked if Route Consultant is accurately representing the situation during the buying process, Patton told Insider: “I have thousands of hours of free content for investors, and my honest concerns about FedEx Ground’s leadership goes back nearly a year. I know Route Consultant will continue to communicate the pros and cons of contracting with FedEx Ground.”.

On a September 15 earnings call, Raj Subramanian, the CEO of FedEx, described the contractors’ issues as “more of a perception than reality.”. And FedEx isn’t the only player here who thinks that Patton is making noise about contractor distress to his advantage.

“I wonder if he’s protecting himself,” a small Southern contractor in Las Vegas said.

Patton was just trying to figure out ways to make another buck,” Jeff Walczak, a 17-year FedEx veteran who runs a Route Consultant competitor called eTruckBiz, said.

“The problem is these guys are running these businesses very inefficiently,” he told Insider. “I think it’s uncovering some folks that shouldn’t be in this business.

Regardless of their thoughts on Patton’s motives, every contractor who spoke to Insider said his descriptions of FedEx are accurate. And while the company went after Patton, it has made some of the changes he called for.

FedEx has also significantly curtailed Sunday service, which Patton touted repeatedly as a key fix for contractors’ struggles. FedEx announced some reduction of Sunday service in July, but it’s pulling back even harder now after announcing a dramatic decrease in earnings expectations for the fiscal year in September.

The ramp-down of Sunday service and a favorable renegotiation could turn some fates around. Others are still losing money and are trapped in the business by debt, truck leases, or both.

On other fronts, Patton failed to gain ground. Though he urged contractors to think twice about signing their holiday-season contracts, FedEx executives said on their latest earnings call that 96% of contractors had agreed to its terms for the peak period.

And with no more routes to stop running, Patton can’t follow through on his threat to stop service. Contractors told Insider that in Facebook groups and phone calls, some folks are still talking about taking their trucks off the road come November if they don’t see improvement.

The trade association Patton started to represent contractors as a bloc has elected leaders and is developing its plan of action. Meanwhile, another organization, ThinkISP, calling itself a “think tank” and led by prominent FedEx Ground contractors, has formed to “revitalize” the contractor model for last-mile deliveries.

Still, several contractors said they’re grateful to Patton for calling attention to the work they do, and the issues their small businesses struggle with.

And now, especially with drastic cost cuts on the agenda for FedEx, Patton said he’s not looking to ratchet up the conflict. “I really feel in my heart right now that it’s probably a good time to be quiet and let this play out,” he told Insider.

Several contractors said they received questions about their trip to Las Vegas from FedEx staff. “They want to get rid of the troublemakers.

Those that did go are potential troublemakers,” the small Southern contractor said.

Service-provider representatives are encouraged to communicate freely with FedEx Ground and have multiple avenues to ask questions, raise concerns or voice ideas, including anonymous reporting.”. Some contractors said they’re laying low and following orders through this likely tepid holiday season to let the dust settle.

A booming market sector [24]

Many traditional companies would be scared enough to find themselves facing threats from either Amazon or Uber Technologies — but FedEx is dealing with both. As the Memphis, Tennessee-based shipping giant prepares to report earnings on Tuesday, FedEx’s cancellation June 7 of its contract with Amazon to deliver packages in the U.S.

Over time, Amazon wants Amazon Prime to become the premier delivery service for Amazon’s own business, and also handle logistics for other e-commerce vendors. Uber wants to use its fleet-management software to push into the business for less-than-truckload shipping, matching trucks with available space to people who need to move more than a package but less than a trailer of goods someplace.

Deutsche Bank’s director and lead shipping analyst, Amit Mehrotra, speculated in a June 10 note that the retailer could buy companies like XPO Logistics, C.H. Robinson Worldwide and Forward Air Corp.

And S.G. Cowen’s managing director and senior research analyst, Helane Becker, thinks FedEx is likely to boost its dividend this month, hoping to offset a 40% decline in the stock since early 2018.

“We believe FedEx’s breakup with Amazon is a watershed moment for the parcel industry,” Shanker said. “[It] signals Amazon’s emergence as a player in the industry and brings new levels of risk to both FedEx and UPS.”.

Shipping and fulfillment, taken together, are a huge line item in the giant online retailer’s budget. Last year it spent $27.7 billion on what securities filings called “sortation, fulfillment and transportation costs.” But moves like last year’s order by Amazon of 20,000 delivery vans from Mercedes-Benz, as well as orders of airplanes, are driving the speculation.

Morgan Stanley has estimated that Amazon saves $2 to $4 per package when it handles delivery itself. Amazon is playing its cards close to the vest.

“We are very happy to have the delivery capacity our carrier partners can provide,” Cheeseman said in an email. “They provide a high-quality service, and our own delivery efforts are needed to supplement that capacity rather than replace it.”.

Uber’s freight business is designed to compete against FedEx’s freight unit, which the company says provides 11% of sales. The company itself is keeping mostly mum, declining an interview for this story.

Uber, especially, is just getting started and may not pose a major threat soon, says James Corridore, CFRA’s director of industrials equity research. Uber’s filings for its recent initial public stock offering notes it has relationships with about 1,000 shippers and about 36,000 carriers.

It focuses less on individual packages bound for consumers, handling lots that are bigger than a package or two but less than a truckload — a $700 billion market, according to Uber, that many shippers find expensive and inefficient. The idea for Uber Freight is similar to its ride-sharing service: Its software streamlines a process that is often done via fax and telephone.

“It can take several hours, sometimes days, for shippers to find a truck and driver for shipments, with most of the process conducted over the phone or by fax,” Uber said in its pre-IPO filings. “Uber Freight greatly reduces friction in the logistics industry by providing an on-demand platform to automate and accelerate logistics transactions end-to-end.

But this isn’t especially dangerous to FedEx Freight — at least not yet, says Corridore. “FedEx does it better because they have much better size and scale,” the analyst said.

It operates 370 service centers and handles 110,000 shipments a day. FedEx’s freight business actually has been gaining market share steadily, the company said in a presentation to institutional investors dated June 10.

FedEx details a list of what it thinks are its advantages in the less-than-truckload business. Its June 10 investor presentation says it is the only company in the category that offers both priority and economy shipping prices (95% of customers use both, it says) and that it has better integration than rivals with rail networks.

“Small and medium businesses speak simplicity and generally desire one-stop shop, and they want a transportation provider who can handle their local, national, rural and peak needs,” FedEx president Raj Subramaniam said in the company’s most recent earnings call in March. Across its businesses, FedEx is trying to deliver more flexibility, lower costs — and a dash of the future.

It will begin year-round seven-day delivery in January 2020, after being offered during the holiday rush. A voluntary buyout of employees that took effect in May is part of a larger plan to cut costs by $450 million to $575 million company-wide to cope with an unexpected slowdown in international trade, said FedEx CFO Alan Graf.

The company argues that growth in e-commerce businesses not owned by Amazon are enough to make that up. It is a view endorsed by Deutsche Bank’s Mehrotra.

But Morgan Stanley’s Shanker says pulling even a small amount of revenue suddenly could cut yearly earnings by 50 cents to 70 cents per share. FedEx’s new fiscal year began June 1.

at very short notice could result in significant decremental margins,” he wrote. But FedEx is also not shy about arguing that Amazon can’t yet match all of FedEx’s advantages.

“When you see a FedEx truck on the road, it not only is carrying those local last-mile shipments but also the other shipments that are originated from all parts of the globe, creating density for last-mile delivery and higher revenue per stop.”. The company is also rushing to make its e-commerce support services more flexible.

Customers can have packages delivered to local grocery stores or Walgreen’s outlets, through FedEx OnSite, if they don’t want them left unattended at their homes, and merchants can streamline returns with the company’s upgraded return solutions products. The company is even testing a robot it calls the FedEx SameDay Bot to make deliveries.

FedEx expects the U.S. package market to double in volume over the next seven years, to more than 100 million packages per day by 2026, Subramaniam said.

And FedEx’s recent growth hasn’t been stellar. The company saw international express revenues fall in the third quarter after a strong 2018, thanks to weakness in China and trade concerns more broadly.

For the quarter that ended in May, analysts predicted on average that FedEx earned $4.93 a share on sales of $17.88 billion, according to Thomson Reuters. But FedEx’s long-term edge is that it simply has more money than Uber and more ability to scale up and ride out economic cycles than either Amazon or the ride-hailing leader, Corridore.

UPS VS. FedEx: Different Ways of Getting an Edge [25]

FedEx may have to shift its business strategy toward FedEx Ground while maintaining its express advantage in order to stay up with the growing demand for local delivery driven by online retailers. Express, Ground, Freight, and Services are all considered separate businesses within FedEx’s overall strategy.

Since FedEx’s express, ground, and freight services are so different from one another, a uniform network strategy would be ineffective. However, UPS’s several operations revolve around the delivery of tiny packages, therefore the company finds it most efficient to use the same network for all of them.

To the untrained eye, they could as well be the same thing. Both companies may transport packages by ground or air inside the United States and to other countries.

FedEx, on the other hand, is an industry leader in international air express freight and operates twice as many planes as UPS. Countries that have access to FedEx’s International Ground service have it easy because this allows for shipments weighing up to 150 pounds to be sent.

Both carriers provide a wide range of customization choices and a solid set of standard features, so it’s time to compare and contrast them. Shipping costs are calculated by UPS and FedEx and are unique for each package based on its size, weight, distance, and projected arrival date.

For domestic shipments, UPS is the preferred alternative because of its low delivery costs, while FedEx is the priciest option. UPS’s international shipping rates are lower than those of its competitors, making it the more cost-effective choice.

WooCommerce does not offer the necessary settings under the Shipping option to enable any carrier/logistics service, let alone Ground shipping. But with the help of the following WooCommerce Shipping plugins, you should be able to do so.

Now let’s see how to use these plugins and get your online business started. Since you will be using the FedEx services online, you need to get an online account.

The developer account allows you to test the packages in a testing scenario. FedEx won’t generate any order and you can print as many labels as you wish.

A production account, on the other, is something we call a live account. Basically using this type of account, you can order a shipment delivery from FedEx and print shipping labels.

Here’s how you get the credentials for your FedEx account. Once you have installed the FedEx shipping plugin on your WooCommerce, you need to further enter the FedEx credentials.

Once you have reviewed your order and generated the packages successfully, you can now click on Create Shipment. Doing this will place an order in your FedEx account requesting to deliver this order.

You can now print the shipping label by clicking on the Print Label option as shown in the image below. Also note that you have the option to Void the shipment, which can be used when you want to cancel an order.
