Mark Elliot Zuckerberg (/ˈzʌkərbɜːrɡ/. born (1984-05-14)May 14, 1984) is an American businessman and philanthropist.

Zuckerberg briefly attended Harvard University, where he launched Facebook in February 2004 with his roommates Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. Originally launched in only select college campuses, the site expanded rapidly and eventually beyond colleges, reaching one billion users in 2012.

In 2007, at age 23, he was the world’s youngest self-made billionaire at the time. He has since used his funds to organize multiple philanthropic endeavors, including the establishment of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.

Time named Zuckerberg one of the most influential people in the world in 2008, 2011, 2016 and 2019, and nominated him as a finalist several other times. He was named the Time Person of the Year in 2010, the same year when Facebook eclipsed more than half a billion users.

In the Forbes 400 list of wealthiest Americans in 2023, he was ranked eighth with a personal wealth of $106 billion. As of January 2024[update], Zuckerberg’s net worth was estimated at $125 billion by Forbes, making him the fifth richest person in the world.

Zuckerberg’s prominence and fast rise in the technology industry has prompted political and legal attention. The founding of Facebook involved Zuckerberg in multiple lawsuits regarding the creation and ownership of the website as well as issues of user privacy.

On April 10 and 11, 2018, Zuckerberg testified before the United States Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation regarding the usage of personal data by Facebook in relation to the Facebook–Cambridge Analytica data scandal.

He and his three sisters (Arielle, Randi, and Donna) were raised in a Reform Jewish household in Dobbs Ferry, New York. His great-grandparents were Jewish emigrants from Austria, Germany, and Poland.

He was captain of the fencing team.

In high school, he built a program that allowed all the computers between his house and his father’s dental office to communicate with each other. During Zuckerberg’s high-school years, he worked to build a music player called the Synapse Media Player.

The New Yorker once said of Zuckerberg: “some kids played computer games. Mark created them.”.

He studied psychology and computer science and belonged to Alpha Epsilon Pi and Kirkland House. In his second year, he wrote a program that he called CourseMatch, which allowed users to make class selection decisions based on the choices of other students and help them form study groups.

Arie Hasit, Zuckerberg’s roommate at the time, explained:. We had books called Face Books, which included the names and pictures of everyone who lived in the student dorms.

Visitors to the site had to choose who was “hotter” and according to the votes there would be a ranking.

In addition, many students complained that their photos were being used without permission. Zuckerberg apologized publicly, and the student paper ran articles stating that his site was “completely improper”.

In January 2004, Zuckerberg began writing code for a new website. On February 4, 2004, Zuckerberg launched “Thefacebook”, originally located at thefacebook.com, in partnership with his roommates Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes.

It published its own student directory, “The Photo Address Book”, which students referred to as “The Facebook”. Such photo directories were an important part of the student social experience at many private schools.

Six days after the site launched, three Harvard seniors, Cameron Winklevoss, Tyler Winklevoss, and Divya Narendra, accused Zuckerberg of intentionally misleading them into believing that he would help them build a social network called HarvardConnection.com, when he was using their ideas to build a competing product.

While Zuckerberg tried to convince the editors not to run the story, he also broke into two of the editors’ email accounts—for which he made use of their private login data logs from TheFacebook.

The agreed settlement was for 1.2 million Facebook shares and $20 million in cash.

They began with Columbia University, New York University, Stanford University, Dartmouth College, Cornell University, University of Pennsylvania, Brown University, and Yale University.

Zuckerberg, Moskovitz and the other co-founders moved to Palo Alto, California, where they leased a small house that served as an office. Over the summer, Zuckerberg met Peter Thiel, who invested in his company.

According to Zuckerberg, the group planned to return to Harvard, but eventually decided to remain in California, where Zuckerberg appreciated the “mythical place” of Silicon Valley, the center of computer technology in California. They had already turned down offers by major corporations to buy the company.

For me and my colleagues, the most important thing is that we create an open information flow for people. Having media corporations owned by conglomerates is just not an attractive idea to me.” The same year, speaking at Y Combinator’s Startup School course at Stanford University, Zuckerberg made a controversial assertion that “young people are just smarter” and that other entrepreneurs should bias towards hiring young people.

He restated these goals to Wired magazine in 2010: “The thing I really care about is the mission, making the world open.” Earlier, in April 2009, Zuckerberg had sought the advice of former Netscape CFO Peter Currie regarding financing strategies for Facebook. On July 21, 2010, Zuckerberg reported that Facebook had reached the 500-million-user mark.

The birth of Facebook was portrayed in the 2010 film The Social Network. Zuckerberg was born on May 14, 1984, in White Plains, New York, into a comfortable, well-educated family.

Zuckerberg’s father, Edward Zuckerberg, ran a dental practice attached to the family’s home. His mother, Karen, worked as a psychiatrist before the birth of the couple’s four children — Mark, Randi, Donna and Arielle.

when he was about 12, he used Atari BASIC to create a messaging program he named “Zucknet.” His father used the program in his dental office, so that the receptionist could inform him of a new patient without yelling across the room. The family also used Zucknet to communicate within the house.

Together with his friends, he also created computer games just for fun. “I had a bunch of friends who were artists,” he said.

To keep up with Zuckerberg’s burgeoning interest in computers, his parents hired private computer tutor David Newman to come to the house once a week and work with Zuckerberg. Newman later told reporters that it was hard to stay ahead of the prodigy, who began taking graduate courses at nearby Mercy College around this same time.

There he showed talent in fencing, becoming the captain of the school’s team. He also excelled in literature, earning a diploma in classics.

Yet Zuckerberg remained fascinated by computers and continued to work on developing new programs. While still in high school, he created an early version of the music software Pandora, which he called Synapse.

Several companies—including AOL and Microsoft—expressed an interest in buying the software, and hiring the teenager before graduation. He declined the offers.

After his sophomore year, Zuckerberg dropped out of college to devote himself to his new company, Facebook, full time.

It was at that time that he built a program called CourseMatch, which helped students choose their classes based on the course selections of other users.

The program became wildly popular, but was later shut down by the school administration after it was deemed inappropriate. Based on the buzz of his previous projects, three of his fellow students—Divya Narendra, and twins Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss—sought him out to work on an idea for a social networking site they called Harvard Connection.

Zuckerberg agreed to help with the project, but soon dropped out to work on his own social networking site, The Facebook. Zuckerberg and his friends Dustin Moskovitz, Chris Hughes and Eduardo Saverin created The Facebook, a site that allowed users to create their own profiles, upload photos, and communicate with other users.

That year Zuckerberg dropped out of college and moved the company to Palo Alto, California. By the end of 2004, Facebook had 1 million users.

Accel invested $12.7 million into the network, which at the time was open only to Ivy League students.

The site began attracting the interest of other companies that wanted to advertise with the popular social hub.

In 2010, screenwriter Aaron Sorkin’s movie The Social Network was released. The critically acclaimed film received eight Academy Award nominations.

Mezrich was heavily criticized for his re-telling of Zuckerberg’s story, which used invented scenes, re-imagined dialogue and fictional characters.

In early 2018, he announced a personal challenge to develop improved methods for defending Facebook users from abuse and interference by nation-states. (Previous personal challenges began in New Year’s 2009 and have included only eating meat he killed himself and learning to speak Mandarin.).

Following a few days’ silence, Zuckerberg surfaced on various outlets to explain how the company was taking steps to limit third-party developers’ access to user information, and said he would be happy to testify before Congress.

He promised the company would investigate all of its apps, and remind users which ones they can shut off. “I’m sorry we didn’t do more at the time,” he wrote.

Amid increasing calls for his resignation from investor groups, Zuckerberg traveled to Capitol Hill and met with lawmakers ahead of his two-day testimony, scheduled for April 10 and 11. The first day of hearings, with the Senate Commerce and Judiciary Committees, was considered a tame affair, with some senators seemingly struggling to understand the business model that powered the social media giant.

Mark Zuckerberg had by this time taken incremental steps to increase its user base. As it first started by providing access to schools in the United States, Facebook now additionally offered access to universities and colleges in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and Mexico.

The growth was so tremendous that he decided to serve the company as a chief executive officer instead of a programmer. Because of this decision, Mark Zuckerberg had more time to determine the company’s strategic direction.

The operations of the site was limited to Harvard University until Mark thought to extend it to other schools. He achieved the expansion with the help of his roommate and schoolmates Dustin Moskovitz, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, and Chris Hughes.

As at December 2018, the social network had more than 2.3 billion active monthly users. Facebook went public in February 2012, with an initial public offering (IPO) $104 billion.

(NewsNation) — Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg is building a massive Hawaiian compound complete with tree houses, dozens of bedrooms and even an underground bunker, according to an investigation by Wired. The in-depth investigation by Wired said the compound is being built in Kauai, Hawaii, and reportedly cost $100 million to build.

Koolau Ranch, as it is reportedly called, sits on land purchased by Zuckerberg for $170 million. The ranch will have at least 30 bedrooms and 30 bathrooms and a network of tree houses that connect some of the rooms, according to Wired.

Sources told Wired the compound will be completely self-sufficient, with an 18-foot tall water tank and pump system and food production systems. Hundreds of workers and trucks have come and gone from the property during construction, while some workers have reportedly been fired for talking openly about the project.
