What grocery stores carry coconut milk? [1]

If you’re looking for a dairy-free, vegan-friendly alternative to regular milk, coconut milk is a great option. It’s available in most grocery stores and can be used in a variety of recipes, from smoothies to curries.

Coconut milk is usually found in the Asian food aisle or near alternative milk products. It is canned and comes in regular, sweetened, and low-fat varieties.

However, also check the international foods aisle if you can’t find it at your local shop. Most areas have an international food store, where you could find it, as well.

Coconut milk is made from the extracted juice of mature coconuts. It contains no cholesterol or lactose, and it’s rich in nutrients such as calcium, iron, and vitamins E and B12.

Coconut milk is a great substitute for regular milk because it adds a similar creamy texture to recipes. This beverage gives you all the health benefits of drinking your recommended amount of daily dairy products.

If you’re not intolerant or allergic to dairy products, coconut milk doesn’t automatically make a better choice than regular milk since both products have similar nutrients and benefits. Many people enjoy using this non-dairy beverage simply because of how tasty it is—and with the number of recipes that call for it increasing each day, there are plenty of ways to incorporate more into your diet.

Here’s how to use it in curries: When it comes to smoothies, coconut milk is a suitable choice because it adds a delicious tropical flavor.

Here’s a simple recipe for a tropical smoothie: Ingredients:

Ask an employee for help if you have trouble finding it. Your local co-op or health food store may carry it, too.

If all else fails, there are some recipes you can use to make it yourself. If you’re looking to buy coconut milk online, there are a few great options.

Another good option is Organic Coconut Milk. It’s organic, non-GMO, and comes in a BPA-free carton.

You can also buy Native Forest Organic Coconut Milk. It’s organic, non-GMO, and is available in BPA-free cans.

It comes in 32-ounce cartons. Coconut Milk is also sold online by Walmart.

There are a few reasons you might want to buy coconut milk online. Perhaps you can’t find it at your local store, or maybe you’re looking for a specific brand that’s not available in your area.

Plus, it’s often easier to order coconut milk online than track down a specific brand in-store. Some popular options for coconut milk are almond milk, soy milk, and rice milk.

Almond milk, soy milk, and rice milk can be used in place of coconut milk in most recipes. They are all dairy-free and vegan-friendly and can be found in most grocery stores.

Coconut oil is another fitting option for butter or other cooking oils because it has a high smoke point, meaning that it won’t burn as easily when heated up. Although coconut oil has a high percentage of saturated fat, studies have shown that this type of healthy fat can help lower blood pressure.

Just make sure not to use coconut oil interchangeably with coconut milk since they’re different ingredients made from different parts of the coconut tree. And finally, coconut flour is a great option for regular flour because it’s low in carbs and high in fiber, making it perfect for baking.

Can’t Find Coconut Cream? See Top Alternatives [3]

I hadn’t even heard of coconut cream until I needed it for a recipe one night. Then, I wondered where to buy coconut cream and where it might be in the store.

Is it with the milk, or do I find it with the baking stuff.

I figured it out, so you don’t have to. You can find coconut cream in the grocery if you know where to look.

You can find coconut cream at the canned section of the grocery store, usually near the canned fruits and vegetables. If you don’t find it there, you might find it in a specialty foods aisle or with the drink mixers, as sometimes, it’s included in cocktail recipes.

It’s thicker, fattier, and made from pureeing coconut flakes. So you can’t use them interchangeably.

Or you can get some online. If you’re cooking and you need a quick substitute, there are a couple of ways to go too.

Some of the chains below are a great place to try, especially if you already do your regular shopping there. Kroger offers cream of coconut from Goya in a 15 ounce can and from Coco Lopez.

Publix often has coconut cream on the shelves, but check with your local store first. Availability may vary depending on your location.

If you can find it in your store, consider making a coconut cream pie using the official Trader Joe’s Coconut Cream Pie Recipe. Of course, superstore giant Walmart has organic coconut cream in a 13.5-ounce can.

If you can’t find coconut cream in-store, check Walmart’s website. Walmart also offers same-day grocery delivery to your home depending on where you’re located in relation to their stores.

Coconut cream is a common feature in many Asian recipes, like some curries, and even if it’s hard to find at a big supermarket, a local Asian grocer is likely to have it. Amazon sells quite a few varieties of coconut cream, so check out organic 365 Coconut Cream, Native Forest Premium Coconut Cream, or Real Gourmet Cream of Coconut.

Some cities are offering same-day grocery delivery with Amazon, but this is dependent on your location. It’s a great place to buy, sell, and auction various items, but eBay also sells coconut cream.

Pure Modern Living offers Thai Kitchen Brand Coconut Cream in a six-pack of cans. They also offer various other brands, so if you have a favorite, there’s no need to compromise.

But, you’re in luck if you need a coconut cream substitute. You have three solid replacement options to choose from, and they’re all decent substitutes for coconut cream.

First, try using coconut milk. Its flavor profile is quite similar to coconut cream.

When you use coconut milk as a substitute for coconut cream, you may want to also add a splash of regular cream to thicken things a bit, as coconut milk might be too thin. Also, if your recipe calls for you to whip coconut cream, it won’t work well without a dash of cream to help fluff things up.

The whipped cream might be too thick for your recipe, so you may want to thin it out with a little bit of coconut milk to try and match the consistency and flavor of coconut cream. You might try mixing half whipped cream and half coconut milk to create the amount of coconut cream you need.

Coconut is a tree nut. So, if you have a nutty paste on hand, it can serve as a substitute for coconut cream.

So, try using almond paste. Place about four ounces of paste into a bowl with just over a cup of water.

Blend them thoroughly before adding them to your recipe. If you think it tastes too much like almond or not enough like coconut, consider putting the mixture in the blender with a handful of coconut flakes.

If you think you added too much and made your mix lumpy, add a dash of water to thin it back out again.

Snacks to Buy at Asian Grocer [5]

Learn what you should buy at an Asian grocery store and what you should buy at your local market. If you get intimidated when walking into an Asian grocery store for the first time, don’t be.

In our household, we cook American, Thai, Vietnamese, and Laotian food. I’ve been going to Asian grocery stores in Chinatown since immigrating to the United States in 1982.

Table of Contents. For your first visit, you’ll want to make sure you know what to expect.

Read my definitive list on what to get at an Asian grocery store before you go into the store. If you don’t, you may find yourself picking up products and realizing they are not in English (or even with labels misspelled), getting overwhelmed by the sheer volume of product options, and not knowing where everything is.

I’m here to guide you through an Asian grocery store aisle by aisle and share with you my favorite products that I use for my family. Are you ready to tour the market with me and allow me to share with you my recommended brands.

Produce is generally less inexpensive along with a larger variety of exotic foods.

It doesn’t mean that you have to only be serving up Asian cuisine if you stop there.

Asian grocery stores don’t follow the middleman business model like most American grocery store chains do. They order directly from the manufacturer.

From a freshness perspective, the clients of these Asian grocery stores shop and cook differently than most Westerners. They are often making trips to the stores multiple times per week rather than how Westerners shop in bulk once a week.

Let me help you out. I’ll send you a free shopping list to your email inbox that will help you navigate your next visit.

Jelly cups are delicious, and your kids will absolutely love them. They come in all different types of cannisters, including cute little animals.

You will find this at your local grocer, but they are in larger variety at the Asian grocer (and less expensive too). Shrimp chips are absolutely addictive.

The sheer amount of wafer sticks dwarfs what you’ll find any any local grocer. There are delicious sour flour cakes that are individually wrapped, sweet, and chewy that your kids will love snacking on.

I would recommend getting roasted rice powder, which is normally not found at your local grocer. You’ll find pure sesame oil at ⅓ of the price that you would at a normal grocer.

Soy sauce, fish sauce, and oyster sauces can be found aisle after aisle, variety after variety. They’ll be less expensive by half the price (and taste better as well).

Here are filtered fish sauces: My favorite fish sauce brand is the squid brand:

Oyster sauces that I love are the Red Panda version. Forget about sriracha (okay, don’t forget about it), but explore some other alternatives:

I personally love the red curry that comes in the small red can. If you are wanting to make pho, you are going to need these little stars.

Noodles are endless. There are a ton of noodles like rice noodles, vermicelli noodles, bean thread, glass noodles, and so much more.

This is my second favorite ramen: Spring roll wrappers are an amazing find here.

If you love panko over regular breadcrumbs, you’ll find it way less expensive at the Asian grocery store. There are so many flours you can purchase including rice flour, potato starch, sweet rice flour, the list goes on.

Tapioca flour, rice flour and sweet rice flour are amazing milled ingredients that can make absolutely wonderful dishes: Here’s a premade mixture for banh xeo, a Vietnamese crepe pancake:

Try getting Thai sweet rice, Thai black rice, or jasmine rice. If you buy in bulk 25 lb bags, you can save a ton of money if your family eats a lot of rice.

Dried mushrooms come in a large array of varieties in an Asian grocer. The most popular are the wood ear mushrooms, which are used in egg rolls.

Large jars are to had inexpensively. They are absolutely delicious.

Thai black rice (also known as purple sticky rice) is delicious and a great alternative to sticky rice. There is such a large variety of coconut cream that you may get confused on what to get.

The blue and brown cans are normally what I would recommend. Premade sauces for some of your favorite dishes are also available, saving you a lot of hassle from finding all the other ingredients:

There are other fruits that you can pick up as well. Make sure you refrigerate it before serving, because chilled longan is absolutely the best:

Fresh vegetables are a great find at your local Asian grocery store. You can buy a larger variety than at your local grocer including lemon grass, snow peas, bok choy, mushrooms, bean sprouts, and so much more.

Grab chinese broccoli and bok choy. Herbs are plentiful.

Fruit is cheaper in Asian markets. You can find things like persimmons, lychees, and mango.

Even if you think you’ve found an amazing gardening store locally, your Asian supermarket will have seeds for some specialty items: This is my favorite thing to get: Chinese Kale (also known as Chinese Broccoli) is used a lot in stir fry and has a taste between broccoli and cauliflower.

Fresh rice noodles come in bags and are generally used for dishes, for example pho broth. You can also get fresh rice noodle sticks as well:

In addition, there are a variety that you can choose from: These are great for banh uot and banh cuon.

If you are not a fan of weird textures, this might not be the right snack for you. If you are short on time and can’t make fresh rice sheets for banh uot or banh cuon, you can buy them fresh for a cheater banh uot meal.

Tofu is a great thing to get at the Asian grocer.

They only take about 5 minutes in the oven, but they are delicious and chewy.

You can get things like pot stickers, egg rolls, edamame, and steamed buns. Here is banh bao, which is hard to make on it’s own, but when it’s frozen, all you do is heat it up.

Mochi is a type of ice cream that is absolutely delicious. It’s a chewy dough on the inside with ice cream on the outside.

If you want to make your own dumplings and egg rolls, get some frozen wrappers where they are already sliced and ready to peel for you to roll.

The most famous of these teas is jasmine tea, especially the one in this container: Forget overpaying for coffee, there are so many varieties available at the Asian market.

You can find Asian beers and spirits readily available and cheap.

Can you substitute coconut cream for coconut milk? [6]

Confused about the difference between coconut milk vs coconut cream. Here’s everything thing you need to know about how to use coconut milk and coconut cream in recipes.

If you’ve found yourself overwhelmed in the grocery store isle wondering what the difference is between coconut milk vs coconut cream, you’re not alone. There’s now an abundance of brands to choose from and a variety of types, including classic, simple, and lite.

Much of this is due to the fact that coconut milk and coconut cream have recently become widely popular in healthy recipes. Both can be used in a variety of ways as a delicious dairy free alternative to milk in desserts, soups, and even whipped cream.

While coconut milk and coconut cream are sourced from the same raw material, there’s a simple yet important distinction between the two. Once you know this, you’ll know how to use them in recipes and be able to swap coconut milk for coconut cream (and vice versa).

Jump to: To put it simply, the difference between coconut milk vs coconut cream is the fat content.

Because of this, coconut cream has a thicker consistency, and coconut milk is thinner and has a milk-like consistency. Here’s a breakdown of each so you know how to use them.

But, you can create a milk from the contents of a coconut. Coconut milk is simply shredded coconut flesh (the white stuff you see when you open a coconut) puréed with water.

Coconut is rich in saturated fat, specifically medium chain fatty acids. So, it’s thicker and the fat is solid at room temperature.

For recipes, I recommend sticking to an organic full-fat or “classic” coconut milk with little to no preservatives. Don’t worry about “lite” coconut milk.

Similar to coconut milk, coconut cream is also puréed coconut flesh and water, but it contains just enough water to make it mixable. Coconut cream is much thicker than coconut milk.

Because of this, coconut cream has a higher fat content, ranging from 19-22%. Sure can.

Here’s how to do it: With rising popularity of non-dairy milk, coconut milk can now be found canned and in cartons.

Coconut milk in a carton is much more diluted. It also contains more additives and preservatives to keep it light and pourable.

Because it has a higher fat content and creamier consistency, it’s best stored in a can.

In general, coconut milk is a great substitute for regular milk in recipes. It’s perfect for making things smooth, creamy, and sippable.

Here are some delicious ways to use it: Note: if you have extra leftover from a can, you can freeze coconut milk and use it later.

Coconut cream is great when you’re looking for a texture that’s more creamy and solid. My most favorite use for coconut cream is coconut whipped cream.

You can also add it to smoothies, curries, or soups to make the consistency thicker and creamier.

Here are a few things to consider when purchasing: Coconut cream and coconut milk have similar ingredients and allow you to enjoy all the delicious health benefits of coconut.

Have a question about a specific brand. Let me know if the comments below.

How Is It Used? [7]

Coconut products have burst into popularity over the last few years, including coconut milk, coconut oil, etc. Coconut milk has long been a key ingredient in Southeast Asian cooking, and in this article, we’ll talk in more detail about how it’s made and used, and what to buy.

Producers extract coconut milk from the pulp of a mature coconut by grating the pulp, soaking it in water, and pressing the liquid. You can find it in the cuisines of Southeast Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America.

There are various types that differ by fat content. Thick coconut milk, often labeled coconut cream (don’t confuse it with “cream of coconut,” which has added sugar), has the highest amount of fat and a thick consistency similar to yogurt.

Regular coconut milk has a consistency closer to dairy cream. Note, however, that when it separates, it will look like gray water with a thick white layer at the top (this is the coconut “cream”).

Some confuse coconut milk with coconut water, which is the liquid that comes from non-mature coconuts (i.e. when coconuts are green rather than brown and fuzzy).

Coconut milk adds richness to sauces, braised dishes, curries and noodle soups. Just shake the can before opening and using.

We use it in our Thai curries and our Chicken Adobo. (Note: while traditional Chicken Adobo doesn’t usually contain coconut milk, we think it adds a richness to the sauce, and rounds out the sharp and salty flavors of the vinegar and soy sauce.) Our favorite noodle soups using coconut milk are our Malaysian Curry Mee and Woks of Life reader favorite, 15-Minute Coconut Curry Noodle Soup.

Coconut milk can also be used in desserts like our Coconut Peanut Mochi or Coconut Tapioca Dessert.

Coconut milk is usually availabe in cans. We like to buy the regular 13.5 ounce (400 ml) cans as well as the smaller cans (5.4 ounce/160 ml) if we just need a little bit in a recipe and don’t want leftovers that we have to use up quickly (because of its high fat content, it can go rancid quickly.

You can also purchase it in cartons, but beware that this type is for drinking or for use in cereal, etc. and may also contain preservatives, sugar, and other additives.

Avoid “low-fat” or “light” coconut milk, which is simply a watered down version. It’s usually the same price as the regular stuff, but you’re getting more water than coconut.

You can find coconut milk in Asian markets as well as regular grocery stores. Always check use by dates and as with any canned foods, beware of damage, dents, and bulges.

Store in a cool, dry place. Once opened, transfer any unused milk to a tightly sealed container and refrigerate.

If unable to use it within that time, freeze it.

Don’t get confused [11]

First, it’s not really milk. I mean, you can’t milk a coconut.

And why are there so many similarly named coconut cans and products in the grocery store now. No worries, here are some answers on how best to use this creamy and delicious nut.

The coconut meat and milk inside the shell are part of the seed’s endosperm to help it grow. Coconut milk is great source of nutrients like manganese and copper.

But can also be used for so much more.

You can shake up a can before opening to recombine the layers.

The non-dairy “milk substitute” that people use for smoothies and cereal is not the same as the canned coconut milk used in cooking. The carton coconut milk is just extremely watered down coconut milk.

Don’t buy the light stuff. Lite coconut milk is just watered down.

Also, don’t confuse it with coconut cream. This is essentially just the separated “fat” layer from the top of the can.

It will add volume not thin out any sauce. Finally, coconut water that is exploding in popularity is not coconut milk and no watered down coconut milk.

If you open a can but only need a little for a dish, you can store the remaining liquid in a container in the fridge for a week or freeze for up to six months.

Now that you know a little more, try a few of my favorite coconut milk recipes. Mango ginger frozen yogurt.

Why buy in an Asian supermarket? [13]

Post Content. Sometimes grocery shopping can be a daunting task.

Instead of a task, I feel like I’m on vacation. I need to remind myself to look at my grocery list often, otherwise, I just drift off into exploring mode.

It’s just so exciting to explore and find out what you can taste or incorporate into your cooking. I’m always so inspired while grocery shopping, a lot more than I can handle at home.

New May Wah is precisely that, on steroids. It’s so incredible.

Single. Time.

You’d think my favorite Asian supermarket would be in Chinatown, but to be honest, it’s not. The fact is that Chinatown is lovely to visit, but it’s also a huge tourist attraction.

Chinatown shops are smaller, and it’s hard to find a “one-stop-shop” for groceries. If you’re going there, consider store-hopping.

I have to admit that I’ve yet to visit this store since it’s south of the city. I have almost everything I can think of within 10 minutes, walking distance from home.

New May Wah, on the other hand, is located in the Inner Richmond, the neighborhood where we’ve been living in the last 2 years now. It’s also called “The new Chinatown”.

This is why I love this neighborhood and started taking groups to discover this fantastic gem through my Inner Richmond Food Tour. For individuals as well as restaurants, it has it all:

Many of the restaurants in the neighborhood (and outside) are getting their products from this store. Sea Urchin (Uni) isn’t always available here, but usually, you can find it in little bamboo trays, and the quality varies.

one of my favorite cooking hack. you can get those for a few bucks: rounded, squared, thin, thick, yellow, green, you name it.

I can write a designated post just about the beverages aisle here. If I try a different beverage every day, I’d probably be tasting new drinks for well over a year.

When soaked in water, Basil seeds plump up to this translucent ball with a black eye in the middle. It acts similarly to flax seeds or chia seeds and very good for digestion and adds a good texture to the drink.

This fish snack is baked to crispiness, covered with sesame. It makes a great sweet and salty snack to eat with sake or beer.

Thai Chili Paste with soybean oil – I discovered this amazing condiment on our Thailand trip. I brought a few jars back home just to discover they are available 5 minutes from home in New May Wah.

Amazingly works with any stir fry, or as a base for a Thai dipping sauce. Here’s a video of how that’s made from scratch (and why I don’t bother).

It has the most fat-content to volume ratio of all other coconut milk brands. This means it has less water, and you need to use less of it for any recipe, and you can always thin it down with if necessary.

It’s made by fermenting green chilis with the peel of the yuzu citrus. The result is a super fragrant spicy paste that makes everything taste sharp.

It also works great with vegetables, meats, cooked fish, marinades, salad dressings, and anything that can use a good flavor punch. You can make your own satay peanut sauce, but this is a welcomed shortcut.

Just use as-is adding to chicken, pork, beef, vegetables, stir fry or mix with coconut milk to make a marinade. The Chinese greens aisle is a magnificent aisle to browse.

The Chinese Cauliflower is another must-try if you see it in season, it has a longer pale green stems and smaller florets. It holds its shape pretty well, and it has a very delicate asparagus-cauliflower like flavor.

there’s a good selection of fresh mushrooms here. I love to get the black fungus for stir fry, it adds a crunchy earthy texture.

You can also find enoki, beech, king trumpets, and crimini here. Don’t forget to stop by the dried mushroom section and get a bag or two, since it’s a pantry staple and can be added to so many dishes to give it a bit of an extra umami flavor.

The small red Thai chilis are my favorite, and I keep a bag of them in the freezer. They keep for a long time, and whenever I need a bit of a spicy kick, I take a few frozen chilis out of the freezer, and by the time I clean them from the seeds, they’re thawed.

I keep a jar with red chili peppers ready to be added to a stir fry, a broth, or a stew. The frozen section here is impressive.

The dumpling and Dim Sum selection is striking. It’s easy enough to get fresh Dim Sum from around the neighborhood but not so much in the evenings.

If you’re a mayo-person like me, and still didn’t try this one – it’s a must-try. Kewpie is the Japanese version of mayonnaise, made with egg yolks and rice vinegar, and has a smooth and creamy texture.

We already got our Dim Sum. now we need the chili oil.

It is the perfect condiment to add to anything that needs some chili and garlic: pizza topping, stir fry, fried chicken, mix it with mayonnaise to make spicy mayo. The possibilities are endless.

I’m not a Bamboo shoot fan. I always ask to remove any bamboo shoots from my Ramen because I can’t stand the after-taste.

You can get 2 variants of the bamboo shoots here (long and short), or ready-to-eat bamboo in saltwater. This is a major important thing to know.

So I need bones. Chicken carcasses aren’t sold in every supermarket (you can probably ask the butcher).

Here in New May Wah, there’s always a big pile of chicken bones to fill yourselves a big bag for less than $1 a pound, and you can ask for beef bones for cheaps, cut to your likings. I always keep a bag of bones in my freezer for when I’m out of stock.

the fruit section here is so great. Do you miss some of the amazing fruit you last tried in Thailand.

And here is a good place to bring all that back. It’s not going to be as cheap or abundant, but you can get the best in-season fruits here and some magnificent fruits imported from Vietnam, China, Thailand, Mexico, and more.

They’re both a bit similar to lychees, but each has its own distinct charm. You can also get fresh Jackfruit, Durian (the notoriously stinky fruit), Mangos, Asian pears, kumquats when in season, and Dragon fruit are all usually available here.

They also have a selection of Vietnamese “fancy meats,” which is a fancy way of saying “ham” that is great for sandwiches, especially Banh Mi. Jackfruit coconut roll, honey walnuts, mung bean filled mochi, sesame cookies, dried squid… There are so many snack options here, and none of them are your conventional potato chips.

They also have a selection of Vietnamese “fancy meats,” which is a fancy way of saying “ham” that is great for sandwiches, especially Banh Mi. Love your crab cakes.

What is the difference between coconut milk and coconut cream? [14]

So many choices, and so little time. Let me help you choose the best coconut milk to buy.

There are so many coconut milks on the market right now, and not all are created equal. Let me walk you through some of my favorite coconut milks that are a good option.

Skip regular milk and learn how to use coconut milk for cooking and mixing in your favorite recipes. This is a great way to get away from dairy milk but also receive the health benefits of coconut.

I love using coconut milk for rice pudding to stir in and help to add a splash of liquid for a creamy base. Coconut milk that is in a carton can be used as a milk substitute.

Stir your coconut milk into smoothies, pour over a glass of cereal, or even mix into recipes. You will enjoy regular coconut milk as it offers a great taste.

This type of coconut milk is often used in baking and can be used in place of whole milk, double cream, and half and half. You can read more about this in my full explainer on the differences between canned vs carton coconut milk.

The answer is no, they are not the same. Let me help you understand the difference between the cream and the milk.

The big difference is the ratio of coconut to water. So for a coconut cream you will use around four parts of coconut to one part of water.

Coconut cream can be used in Asian cuisine for savory dishes. I find that coconut cream can be similar to a heavy cream in a recipe.

The creamy consistency will really enhance a variety of dishes. Lite coconut milk is lower in fat and isn’t as thick as full fat coconut milk.

You can use this type of coconut for light recipes but do nut use for heavy recipes that call for full fat coconut milk. This is my favorite brand of lite coconut milk.

(And you can just keep them in your pantry – no need to take up valuable refrigerator space.). Once coconut milk is opened, you should store it in the refrigerator and plan to use in 7-10 days.

Natural value is one of the cleanest brands of coconut milk. You’ll only find simple ingredients in their BPA Free canned coconut milks.

Ingredients: Organic coconut, water. Pros.

NATURAL VALUE. My favorite brand of coconut milk.

Coconut Mama’s #1 pick.

High-quality organic coconut milk. This is a great-tasting coconut milk made from the first pressing of fresh organic coconut meat and is mixed with only filtered water and a tiny amount (less than 1%) of guar gum from the seeds of the guar plant.

Ingredients: Organic Coconut Milk (Filtered Water, Organic Coconut, Organic Guar Gum). Pros.

NATIVE FOREST. This is a great-tasting coconut milk made from the first pressing of fresh organic coconut meat.

Shop on Amazon. Trader joe’s organic coconut milk is a great choice if you shop at Trader Joe’s.

Trader Joe’s has one of the best canned coconut milks available and I love how affordable it is. Ingredients: Organic coconut milk (water and organic coconut).

TRADER JOE’S. Pure coconut milk that doesn’t have odd fillers like guar gum and xanthan gum.

Shop on Amazon. This is a good choice for anyone looking for a good budget-friendly natural coconut milk.

This is the brand I use for all my recipe testing because it’s the same consistency as my favorite brands, but at a cheaper price. Coconuts are not a heavily sprayed crop so you don’t have to worry about buying organic if it’s not in your budget.

Ingredients: Coconut, Water, & Guar Gum. Pros.

THAI KITCHEN. Great budget-friendly coconut milk option.

Shop on Amazon. This is unsweetened coconut milk with a thinner consistency that is good for eating with cereal, and baking.

Ingredients: Water, Coconut Cream*, Contains 1% Or Less Of: Coconut Water Concentrate*, Gellan Gum, Guar Gum*, Natural Flavor, Sodium Citrate, Tricalcium Phosphate, Vitamin D 2, Xanthan Gum. Pros.

PACIFIC FOODS. This drinkable coconut milk has a mild coconut flavor and taste great alone or added to smoothies or beverages.

Shop on Amazon. I tested lots of different brands of carton and canned coconut milk and the one’s listed below didn’t make my top 5 cut, but are still great options.

Thick full-fat coconut milk is great in curry and adds both flavor and texture to this delicious dish. Yes.

It depends on your dietary values and your preference. Coconut milk blends well in coffee, especially if you use a coffee frother to blend it in.

But seriously, if you like thick creamy coconut milk, use canned full-fat coconut milk in your coffee. If you want a coffee creamer that resembles half and half, I suggest using Coconut Milk Barista or NutPods.

Yes, coconut milk is gluten free and dairy free. Always check labels to make sure that the brand of coconut milk you’re purchasing is made in a factory that doesn’t handle gluten containing products.

Yes, I love to keep organic coconut milk powder on hand for adding to soups and curries. Learn more about coconut milk powder and how to use it here.

So drinking your coconut milk in moderation is key. Coconut Curry Chicken | This Coconut Chicken Thai Curry recipe is perfect for a family dinner or a quick weeknight meal.

All you need is full-fat coconut milk, red curry paste, curry powder, fresh ginger, sweet potatoes, cilantro, chicken breasts, or tofu. Coconut Ice Cream | This coconut ice cream recipe is made with coconut milk, vanilla, honey (or sweetener of choice), and toasted coconut.

Make this tasty treat with simple ingredients and you don’t need an ice cream machine to make it either.

I enjoyed this white rice dish in Hawaii and Mexico, served with tropical fruit and fish.

Avoid: Clarified Butter [15]

Who doesn’t love to pop into Trader Joe’s and grab a few healthy and delicious groceries. Some people do all their shopping at Trader Joe’s, while others only stop in to get a few specialty items, but no matter what your relationship to Trader Joe’s is, this is good info to know.

We also include a few other things that you should avoid altogether.

Crazy, right. Not so much if you take a look at the ingredient list on a lot of other brands of coconut milk, you’ll see added sugars, preservatives, and weird things like xanthan gum.

There are so many health benefits of apple cider vinegar. One of the more poular brands is Bragg’s, but the Trader Joe’s brand is not only cheaper, but has a ton of added benefits because each bottle contains the “mother,” which is basically a host of good bacteria and probiotics.

Almonds are a must when you stop my Trader Joe’s. Sure, it might be tempting to get the huge four-pound bag from Costco, but chances are you won’t eat nearly that much by the time they go bad.

Another great nut to get is macadamia nuts. Usually, these are hard to find, and when you do find them, they are ridiculously expensive.

[sc name=”content-ad-horiz-3″]. Clarified butter is a rich, high-quality butter that is made from boiling the water out of regular butter and using only the butterfat solids.

Plus, the fillers and additives make it no less healthy than regular butter. You can actually make your own clarified butter by boiling regular butter and collecting the butterfat that floats to the top.

Using cauliflower as healthy or gluten-free alternative has become very popular over the last couple of years. Many people choose cauliflower crust because they think it is low-carb, but one look at the back of this box shows that this isn’t the case at all.

Watch the video below for more helpful shopping tips for the next time you’re in Trader Joe’s. [media height=”270″ width=”480″ provider=”youtube” type=”iframe” src=” ad=”true”].

I’m going to let you guys in on a secret… this is a juicy milky one. What if I told you that for just $2.50, you could have at least 6 cups of coconut milk AND 2 cups of coconut flour.

Today, I’m sharing the easiest, quickest, and most inexpensive method of making homemade coconut milk and coconut flour. There are plenty of homemade coconut milk recipes out there, but in my clearly biased opinion – mine is the best.

Making homemade coconut milk using a fresh coconut is obviously ideal, but I don’t have access to fresh coconuts/don’t have the time/shouldn’t be trusted to crack coconuts with a hammer. Instead, I use unsweetened frozen coconut – the only ingredient is coconut.

Many south Indian recipes (especially Kerala dishes) call for coconut, so pretty much every Indian store will carry this product. They also carry whole spices in bulk for cheaper than you’ll find anywhere else.

To make coconut milk, add the frozen coconut and water to your blender and let the coconut soak for 30 minutes or so. Blend for a minute or until the water is nice and creamy, then strain out the coconut pulp using a strainer or a nut milk bag.

Once the pulp is completely dry, put it into a blender or food processor to make it into a fine powder. While I haven’t tried baking with my homemade coconut flour, it definitely makes makes a great addition to smoothies or shakes.

This coconut milk is free of additives and preservatives, so drink it within a few days. Pour yourself a cold glass of this milk on a hot day, and I guarantee you’ll never opt for store bought again.

I tried the recipe and seems the frozen coconut doesn’t mix well with water. The coconut floats to top and doesn’t blend in with water all that much.

Is that what is suppose to be done.

I have and love my vitamix but a blendtec works too. Hi, I dry the coconut in the oven and use it when i make protein balls, just roll them in there.

Have you used your homemade coconut flour yet. I am curious to know how it compares to store bought.

Love your blog.

I mainly use the homemade version for recipes like smoothies, homemade cereal or I add it to chocolate. Two questions…have you found a good brand that is organic or Non-GMO for coconuts.

I was thinking it probably wouldn’t, since it’s already dehydrated…. I don’t believe gmo coconuts are being field tested at the moment, so I think* all coconuts are non-gmo for now.

I prefer to use frozen (as suggested in the recipe) because it’s faster, easier and cheaper. Hope that helps.

You are so right about it. I never realized how easy it was to make and how much cheaper this is.

I have found out that I also benefit from eating grain free and your page is the best.

Katelynn, thank you.

Okay – I’ve been making my own coconut milk for about a year but I’m having trouble using the flour. It does not work as a 1-1 replacement for store bought coconut flour because it isn’t as dense.

I’m wondering if it needs to be weighed instead and if so, what would the weights be.

Exactly what Marie said. Your ideas, recipes and tips are a delight.

Thank you. Oh, and “Hi” my sweet friend Marie.

Thanks, Karen. Sorry for the late reply – but I really appreciate your kind words 🙂.

Less waste, fresher ingredients, real food. You are awesome.

Thank you.

Thank you.

I hope you loved the homemade coconut milk 🙂. […] making homemade almond milk or homemade coconut milk is a simple process, it’s not always possible to […].

You can use these unsweetened coconut flakes in the dish, but I suggest going to your local Indian grocery store to buy thick slices of frozen coconut. It’s inexpensive and delish – plus you can use the frozen coconut to make my homemade coconut milk.

Making Sweetened Coconut Flakes [18]

There are many Caribbean recipes that use coconut milk from delicious main courses, sweet desserts, and thirst quenching drinks. The amount of coconut milk you’ll get from a coconut depends on its size and ripeness.

You want to be able to hear the water sloshing around inside it.

This makes about 1/2 cup of undiluted coconut milk. Check your recipe and purchase the right number of coconuts.

Follow these steps to open and extract from your coconut:. These steps will help you make extra coconut milk:.

Gather 5 cups coconut meat and 2 1/4 cups white sugar. Place both ingredients in a pot and cook rapidly over medium-high heat for 5 minutes.

Be careful not to burn the flakes. Let them cool.

Confirming my suspicion [19]

The American packaging of Aroy D coconut milk says “coconut milk 100%” which makes you think it is additive free. But it is false, Aroy D coconut milk contains E435 additive.

It is not AIP compliant and anyone with an autoimmune condition or a leaky gut should stay away from it.

Please note that I am not accusing those websites, they have been fooled like anyone else. A few months ago, out of curiosity I wanted to try this specific brand’s coconut milk as it has great reviews.

As you may know, I’m a French food blogger who blogs both in French and English and a large part of my readers are American. So I’m always navigating between American websites and French websites.

When I first checked Aroy D coconut milk on an American online grocery store the first thing that caught my attention was the ingredient listed on the package: “100 % coconut milk”.

For me “coconut milk” is not a primary ingredient. Coconut milk is the result of coconut and water.

Growing up with a father who is an ingredient expert, I’ve been raised to read all labels very carefully. He has also taught me to read between the lines, looking for cheats.

After checking the Aroy D coconut milk on the American online grocery store I went on a French one. And I discovered that the ingredients for Aroy D coconut milk are not the same.

Then I went on a British online grocery store and checked Aroy D coconut milk. It had the same ingredients as in France.

And if you look at this European packaging, it’s translated in German and Polish also with emulsifier (E435). First, I think the ingredient list “100% coconut milk” doesn’t make sense.

That’s weird.

I had this at the back of my mind for several months but didn’t know how to prove my suspicion. Until last night when the penny finally dropped.

As I was searching for coconut milk for a new recipe I’m working on I came across one of Aroy D coconut milk carton online.

Only thing I had to do was go to my local Asian grocery store in Paris and buy a pack of Aroy D coconut milk and see for myself if what I was suspecting was true. And here is a video of the result, so you can see for yourself.

As you can see on this video, I removed the sticker that had the ingredients written in French on it. It clearly says: extrait de noix de coco (70%), eau, émulsifiant (E435).

Underneath this sticker was hidden the American version of the ingredient list: “100% coconut milk”. Which makes you think that it has no additives but it is false.

Dear American readers, this coconut milk contains E435 and you are not told about that.

E435, also known as Polysorbate 60, is used in foods as a stabilizer and emulsifier.

It may also contribute to gut dysbiosis and auto immune response.

And if you are following the autoimmune protocol (AIP), as you might have guessed, in reality this coconut milk is not AIP compliant.

(By the way I highly recommend reading her article Food in America compared to the U.K. (Why is it so different.

First of all, ask yourself if the ingredient list makes sense. Like in this case “coconut milk 100%” when it should be at the very least “coconut and water”.

Thanks to the internet and online stores it’s pretty easy to do that. Even if I don’t speak German nor Polish, I can figure out what it says.

And of course, you can also contact the brand to ask. The question will then be “can you trust the answer.

And if you have any doubts (for example if the texture looks “too good to be true”): don’t eat the product. Please share this post with all of your family members and friends.

More people are ditching alcohol in their quest to live a healthier lifestyle. A few years ago, Ocean Spray discovered that people were filling wine glasses with juice to mimic the sophistication of drinking wine without the hangover, said Clark Reinhard, Ocean Spray’s vice president of global innovation.

Ocean Spray debuted its “mocktails” this spring. Repeat rates, which show whether customers are continuing to buy a product, have been strong, Reinhard said.

“It’s definitely a hot space, and overall we’re delighted with how it started out,” Reinhard said. Greek yogurt.

Customers are now exploring brands from other parts of the world. Greek yogurt surged in popularity as shoppers started sampling healthier food options.

Sales fell 4.6 percent from the year before, according to Nielsen data. Brands like Siggi’s, an Icelandic yogurt, and Noosa, which has with Australian roots, are growing.

“I absolutely think Greek yogurt really invigorated the category from both a retailer and consumer perspective,” Thomae said. Both companies have also benefited from people’s changing eating habits.

Noosa’s yogurt is full fat, which Thomae said people are more accepting of than they were when the product launched in 2010. Last year, Noosa’s sales reached $170 million, Thomae said.

Shoppers aren’t completely ditching rice, but some are swapping out traditional grain versions for vegetable versions. B&G Foods’ Green Giant debuted riced vegetables last fall.

The products have been so successful that the company is introducing two new flavors in September, said Green Giant vice president Jordan Greenberg. “I think this is just the beginning of the trend,” Greenberg said.

Green Giant will continue to invest heavily in developing innovative vegetable products, he said. The company simultaneously debuted veggie tots when it introduced riced veggies.

The ice cream aisle is crowded these days. From “healthy” ice cream to non-dairy ice cream to mochi, the industry is undergoing a transformation.

The brand’s pints range from 240 to 360 calories, the equivalent of about one-half cup of traditional ice cream. Unilever’s Ben & Jerry’s released launched pints made with almond milk earlier this year.
