Friends did a surprisingly good job of filling in the backstories of its six main characters. By the time the series wrapped, fans had learned that Ross Geller, Monica Geller, and Rachel Green all grew up on Long Island.

Chandler Bing explained where his propensity to use sarcasm as a coping mechanism came from, too. The one thing Friends fans never learned was where Ross went to college.

Ross was proud of his Ph. D, and well, he should be.

D in a science field is no easy task. Although his alma mater is almost never mentioned, Buzzfeed News alleges he earned his doctorate at Columbia University in New York City.

The Ph. D program only accepts a handful of students each year.

Ross and Chandler never actually mention where they earned their undergraduate degrees from. All fans know is that they went to school together.

Since Monica is supposed to be about two years younger than Ross, it seems unlikely that Jack and Judy Geller would have sent her off out of state to visit Ross. Still, some fans have reason to believe Ross and Chandler were Hawkeyes during their college days.

His SAT score of 1250 would have also been enough to get him into the school. While it is a competitive score, it certainly wasn’t competitive enough for an Ivy League school, like Columbia or Yale.

Friends fans have spotted some inconsistencies when it comes to Ross’s educational pursuits. Namely, he seemed too young at the start of the series to have already earned his Ph.

In the earliest episodes of Friends, Ross was grappling with his divorce from his first wife, Carol Willick. He mentions that he’s “26 and already divorced.” By that point, Ross was working and had already earned his doctorate.

According to CBS News, the average Ph. D student is 33 years old before completing their program.

While a student could complete a Ph. D in five to six years, Ross would have still been pretty young.

Ross would have needed to breeze through both undergraduate and doctoral studies to be established in his career when the show started. While it’s possible, Ross is never depicted as a genius who skipped multiple grades, making his lightning-fast collegiate career seem unlikely.

When Rachel returns to her friends, putting her life back together after leaving her ex-fiancé at the altar, Ross soon realizes that his old feelings for Rachel never left. A complication emerges early on at the revelation that his ex-wife Carol was pregnant with his child.

but before he can, Rachel meets neighbor Paolo during a blackout. The two start dating, and Ross, ever the jealous one, becomes increasingly frustrated with his situation.

Rachel eventually breaks it off with Paolo, but then swears off men entirely, so Ross is no better off. Nevertheless, Ross persists.

They land on the name Ben for their son.

Rachel gradually realizes she has feelings for Ross, but can’t reach him while he’s abroad. She decides it’s best to move on, but can’t shake her feelings.

David Schwimmer is holding tight to memories, and just shared one any Friends fan will immediately recognize. After the passing of co-star Matthew Perry last month at the age of 54, the actor posted a picture of the two of them in character as Ross and Chandler, respectively, during a Thanksgiving flashback to their days as college roommates in the 80s in Season 5, Episode 8’s “The One with All the Thanksgivings”.

After Monica and Chandler’s wedding, Chandler discovers that he can’t find the photos from the day. He knows that Monica will be devastated if all her wedding memories are gone, so Ross suggests that they re-take a few photos so Monica doesn’t know that the real photos are gone.

It’s clear that he really cares about him. Every time Joey has to part ways with Chandler, he finds it extremely difficult.

As fans soon discover, Chandler was actually comforting Joey. Joey’s dependence on Chandler and reluctance to let him go shows how much he truly loves him.

This September, the pilot episode of the long-running NBC sitcom Friends — titled “The One Where Monica Gets A Roommate” — turns 25 years old, which is coincidentally Joey’s age in the show’s universe when the episode aired.

This episode is most memorable for Ross’ outlandish costume and parenting technique. An unfortunate turn of events at the office leads to a dystopian turn of events for a very strung-out Ross: “Someone at work ate my sandwich.

Any die-hard friends fan knows that “One must have total awareness to defend oneself,” or Ross’ secret weapon, Unagi, which he garnered over years of karate classes. In true early-aughts fashion, Phoebe effortlessly rocks a bandana as Ross tests her and Rachel in a series of cringeworthy fake attacks.

In a plot line that seems like a strange Hail Mary from an alternate universe, Ross kisses Charlie, Joey’s ex-girlfriend, and Joey kisses Rachel, Ross’s ex-girlfriend. Chaos ensues as Ross, who insists he’s “fine,” invites the other new couple over for a double date.

This episode employs comedic game at the expense of Ross, and it works flawlessly. Ross gets a spray tan, and after three mishaps in multiple tanning booths, he is four shades darker than he had planned to be.

This episode inaugurates the flashback sequences in the Friends universe by way of a home video of Monica, Rachel, and by extension, Ross, as they get ready to prom. (Shout out to Ross’ bold mustache and his music career that never was.) After witnessing present-time Ross and Rachel share a passionate kiss after they see the video, Phoebe utters those words that define the couple’s 10-season, on-again, off-again love story: “See.

Ross mediates and judges a Jeopardy-style competition that tests Rachel and Monica’s knowledge of Chandler and Joey — and vice versa. Audiences get a closer look at the complexities of the members of the gang as they contemplate the some truly adult milestones: Phoebe’s artificial insemination and eventual surrogacy of her brother’s children.

Chanandaler Bong. We had to wait 15 whole episodes to finally see Chandler and Monica go public with their relationship, which quickly becomes the strongest partnership in the Friends universe over the remaining five seasons.

The main plot of this episode is that Joey is asked to semi-reprise his role of Dr. Drake Ramoray on Days of Our Lives after his longtime character receives a brain transplant.

Watch the bagpipes performance for yourself so you’ll understand why this is episode in the top three, and also Lisa Kudrow’s favorite episode. If you truly believe that Ross is Rachel’s lobster, then this episode brought happy tears to your eyes.

With the lights down low, the tension between the two is palpable. He storms out, and then comes back just in time for the two to (finally) kiss for the first time ever.

Monica and Chandler got down on one knee to propose to each other a whole 19 years before Angel and Papi did it on the POSE Season 2 finale. It was a proposal that showcased the way in which the series’ writers were able to create such a dynamic and heartfelt relationship between the two characters: “I thought that it mattered what I said or where I said it.

Plot: Rachel’s older sister, Amy (Christina Applegate), crashes Monica’s Thanksgiving dinner after her plans fall through and manages to insult everyone in her signature manner. Then she gets upset when Rachel and Ross say they wouldn’t leave Emma with her if they both died.

Chandler encourages Monica to use their wedding china for the big meal, but she goes to extreme lengths to protect the plates only to faint after an unfortunate incident. Why: The introduction of Amy is a welcome one, but her obsession with what would happen to Emma if Ross and Rachel died overtakes the Thanksgiving theme.

Best Home Moment: We bet you know someone who can relate to Monica’s stress about using her fancy plates. Hopefully that person’s husband isn’t a Chandler.

The friendship between Ross and Chandler is an interesting one. There are a lot of things that happened between them that never really made a lot of sense.

For example, the friendship between Joey and Phoebe is much different than the friendship between Monica and Rachel. And both of those friendships are far different from the friendship that Ross and Chandler share.

Ross and Chandler have the type of friendship that has stood the test of time since they have been friends for so many years. They have also overcome plenty of difficulties between the two of them, including having crushes on the same girl and arguing over which man is stronger.

We’ve noticed that there are a few things about their friendship that don’t really make sense.

There is an unspoken code that goes between friends to prevent this sort of thing. Friends who truly care about each other wouldn’t kiss someone that their friend was attracted to or had feelings for.

After Ross kissed a girl that Chandler liked in college, Chandler decided to get revenge by planting a kiss on Rachel. He knew that Rachel was the object of Ross’s affection which is why he decided to do what he did.

At one point in time, Ross pretty much lost everything. He was financially suffering and due to his hardships, he moved in with Joey and Chandler.

When he moved in with Joey and Chandler, he totally inconvenienced their apartment setup and their lives.

Ross infamously made a “pros and cons” list about Rachel, listing the best qualities about her and the worst qualities about her. What some people might forget is that Chandler is actually the person who gave him the idea to make that list in the first place.

In order to make himself look better in front of his parents, Ross blamed the substance use he briefly was part of in high school on Chandler. He didn’t mind if Chandler’s reputation got messed up with his parents because he wanted to stay in his parents’ good graces.

When Chandler and Joey were tired of Ross living at their apartment, they did their best to try to convince Ross to move somewhere else. They even were willing to try to convince Ross to move into an apartment that was totally unsuitable.

After Chandler kissed Rachel during a college party with a lot of alcohol, he left her laying on his bed. Ross missed the memo and thought he was giving Rachel smooch when really, he was accidentally giving his own sister, Monica, a kiss on the lips.

As an online joke, Chandler thought it would be funny to write that Ross had passed away. This joke goes way too far and pushes the boundaries of what is acceptable and what isn’t.

This is not something that Chandler should have joked about on the Internet.

He started yelling in anger. He marched over to Monica’s apartment to break them up.

He had a major crush on her. Ross is the one who actually ended up making the situation weird because he also found himself attracted to his own cousin.

Ross and Chandler were dealing with their own egotistical problems when they decided to challenge each other to an arm-wrestling match at a Halloween costume party. They were trying to convince themselves and each other of who was the stronger man.

After Ross’ son, Ben, came into the picture, Chandler and Joey ended up taking Ben out for the day in New York City to help them try to pick up women. During this time, Chandler and Joey accidentally left baby Ben on the bus.

He should have offered some advice and insight on the fact that Ross wasn’t making the best decision by marrying Emily. Chandler should’ve spoken up..

At one point, Ross actually kissed Chandler’s mother. Talk about inappropriate.

He did exactly what he felt like doing at the moment without thinking about Chandler‘s feelings. During season three of the show, Chandler planted a kiss on Ross’s mouth when he was drunk.

But.. the fact that most members of the cast have kissed each other at one point or another makes this much less of a big deal.

No one on Friends could drop a sarcastic comment with the finesse and precision of the late Matthew Perry. Actually, few actors in sitcom history have been able to time and deploy an acidic remark better than Perry did during his ten-season run as Chandler Bing.

But his quips are only one element in what makes all these half-hours outstanding. These are the episodes that feature some of the actor’s strongest work.

Basically, if someone asked which Friends episodes they should watch to get a sense of what Chandler was like and how Perry inhabited him, these would be the ones to stream on Max, the place where all of Friends currently lives. Perry’s skills as a physical comedian pop in this episode, where Chandler and Phoebe make a pact to break up with their respective partners at the same time.

Fox but also distinctly Perry’s own thing. “How many of those have you had.

“Oh, I don’t know — a million. ” he responds.

Chandler gets separated from the core ensemble in a story line that traps him in an ATM vestibule with supermodel Jill Goodacre during a power outage. Much of Perry’s performance involves a voice-over narration in which Chandler berates himself for not flirting with Goodacre, commentary that syncs up perfectly with his pained physical reactions to the circumstances.

And in this season-two episode, where Chandler desperately tries to kick his freaky roommate, Eddie (an unhinged Adam Goldberg), out of their apartment, he is gobsmacked over and over again that Eddie does not seem to understand that he needs to move out. Perry’s beyond-perturbed delivery of the line “This is not out of the blue.

” is an all-timer. This bottle episode — in which Ross is trying to get to a museum gala on time and no one is cooperating — is a strongly written and performed piece all across the board.

Consider this one: “Joey, I wrote a little song today. It’s called ‘Get Up.’” Hand this to 10, 20, even 50 actors.

” But Perry doesn’t do that. He takes the line and writes his own melody that slides up and down the syllabic-emphasis scale.

A lot of Friends episodes contain antiquated jokes about homosexuality and gender. This one, in which Chandler starts listening to hypnosis tapes to help him quit smoking, falls under that general umbrella.

To Perry’s credit, he never goes too girly and over the top in his performance. He seems to be having so much fun with it, in fact, that his charm manages to supersede the story line’s somewhat sexist concept.

It’s a simple premise that gives Perry the runway to have a very funny, prolonged panic attack about keeping his forgetfulness a secret from Joey. Also, even in his post-party, hungover state, Chandler still manages to drop perfect little ironic bombs.

As noted in this essay/appreciation of Perry, this is a great Chandler episode because it demonstrates how much he is still felt in every scene, even when he’s technically not visible because he’s stuck in a box to prove how much he values Joey’s friendship. Do you think we could make a list of the best Chandler Bing episodes and leave out the one where Chandler reveals that the fine folks at TV Guide believe his name is Miss Chanandler Bong.

At first it seems like Chandler has fallen back in love with Janice … until Chandler announces to his friends, “I hate that woman.” Then he plans a preemptive strike: To avoid breaking up with Janice, Chandler tells her that he’s being forced to move to Yemen for work, a ridiculous plan that blows up so badly in his face that he actually ends up going to Yemen.

I’m sure there are people who have planned trips to Yemen without saying, “I’m going to Yemen” in Chandler-speak. I also know that if I ever decide to go to Yemen, I will not be one of those people.

So when Chandler finds out that Monica’s new secret boyfriend is “the best sex she’s ever had,” he starts gloating for Monica’s benefit, a process that involves doing an absolutely ridiculous dance on top of Monica and Rachel’s coffee table. As silly as Perry gets to be in this episode, he and Courteney Cox also seize the opportunity to establish how strong the relationship between Chandler and Monica is turning out to be.

What is arguably the best Friends episode ever — personally, I think that’s a tie between this and “The One With the Embryos” — also happens to be a showcase for Perry’s (and Chandler’s) greatest gifts. While engaging in a game of sex-chicken with Phoebe, we get to see Perry’s goofball physicality (the awkward chest thrust he does while demonstrating to Monica how Phoebe is coming on to him), his exasperation (“Did you clean up in here.

Perry never won an Emmy for his work on Friends, and it’s episodes like this that make that fact seem extra-egregious. This is also the one where Monica refuses to accept that she’s sick and tries to get Chandler in the bedroom so she can prove how healthy she is.

The way he imitates Cox’s congested voice — “I would like to stay in the pribe of libe,” he says, making the words sound even more garbled — is funny every single time he says it. And some of us have seen him say that line at least 25 times.

Admittedly, there’s a lot going on in this episode — pregnancy-test mishaps, Joey almost missing the wedding, a drunk Gary Oldman — but the heart of it is the journey that Chandler goes on to remind himself that Monica is the love of life. Saturday Night Live’s Chris Parnell guest-stars in this episode as a colleague of Chandler’s who has labored for several years under the delusion that Chandler’s name is Toby.

Because it got too awkward for Chandler to correct the guy. It’s always fun when Chandler gets to show off his self-constructed work persona — see also season five’s “The One With Chandler’s Work Laugh” — but he’s especially good here, especially when Parnell’s character realizes some guy named Chandler Bing doesn’t want him to get a promotion.

The final episode of Friends includes the big reveal that somehow Monica and Chandler’s surrogate, played by Anna Faris, has been carrying twins the whole time and no one told her. The shock of suddenly having two babies to care for gives us one last great Chandler freak-out — Monica: “Chandler, you’re panicking.” Chandler: “Uh-huh.

” And in the final moments of the series, when the friends leave Monica and Rachel’s apartment for the last time, Chandler gets the last word. “Should we get some coffee.

“Where. ” Chandler responds.

And few spoke it better than Matthew Perry as Chandler Bing.

For fans of Friends, and for the characters themselves, there is a constant debate: who is Chandler Bing’s best friend. Is it Joey Tribbiani, his roommate.

These two men love Chandler more than anything and just want to see him happy. Who can forget the infamous bracelets that Joey gets for Chandler.

However, in the episode’s b-plot, Joey finally makes enough money to thank Chandler for all the head-shots and food he’s paid for over the years. When Joey gives Chandler a tacky gold friendship bracelet, he thinks he loves it, only to later overhear Chandler mocking the bracelet.

The Flock of Seagulls haircuts that Chandler and Ross rock back in college are hilarious, but they were inspired by the band in more ways than one: they have a band, too. Their band, called Way, No Way, is mentioned in the season ten episode “The One Where the Stripper Cries,” in a flashback.

True fans of Friends may remember Way, No Way for such hit songs as “Emotional Knapsack,” “She Feels Weird Since I’ve Been Gone,” and “Betrayal in the Common Room.” That kind of emotional vulnerability can only truly come between two best friends. In all fairness to Ross, it’s difficult to come between co-parents when they’re so involved in their children’s lives.

) while they were living together. They adopt The Chick and The Duck in season three, much to Phoebe’s concern, but it turns out she doesn’t need to worry.

When Chandler has nowhere to go for Thanksgiving in college, Ross invites Chandler to come back and celebrate Thanksgiving with his family instead. Now, Chandler and Ross make it clear to Ross’ parents that Chandler hates Thanksgiving and doesn’t eat any Thanksgiving food.

He’s even invited back for multiple Thanksgivings throughout college, as we can see this Thanksgiving and a later one in the season five episode “The One With All The Thanksgivings.”. When Chandler and Monica are getting married, who does Chandler turn to.

He turns to his best friend Joey, who almost doesn’t make it in time. The entire episode, entitled “The One with Monica and Chandler’s Wedding,” Joey is trying his best to rush through a scene with Gary Oldman.

he rushes to the wedding and makes it just as the ceremony begins, still in costume. That’s true friendship.
