ZANESVILLE − On one stool sits a tattoo artist with enough experience to be able to tell which hand a fellow tattoo artist uses by looking at the tattoo. On another sits an artist whose career is entering its third year.

Dunlap has dabbled in painting and art for most of his life. It wasn’t until he was awarded the top prize in the 2020 Ronna Bucci/Dr.

“Around three years ago I started dabbling in tattooing. Jason Ayers got hold of me and told me to stop in and he would tweak my work and help me figure out how to do things the right way,” he said.

Both men want the shop to have a relaxed atmosphere, for both the artists and the customers. “We are just looking for a vibe where you can sit down and be comfortable, and each artist can focus without being easily distracted,” Ayers said.

It is important for a tattoo artist to be completely focused on their client, Ayers added. “You want them to get what they want and know the artist is fully focused on them.” That may mean fewer clients per week.

“We want you to be proud of what you are wearing, and we want to be proud of what we do as well.” Ayers said. Overall, there are seven artists at the studio, and nearly any style of tattoo can be found among their work.

I want to be diverse.”. Ayers has been tattooing for more than 20 years.

Some times he tattoos the grandchildren of his earliest clients. Ayers said tattooing creates a bond between the artist and the client, and even if the name fades from memory, the tattoo never will.

“Lawyers and professors also tend to be able to get away with more visible tattoos,” Mikey has noticed. “It’s often the more successful independents that can get blasted and still pursue their careers.

But as companies begin to shift their policies, our artists are getting a lot more requests for hand tattoos in particular. Neck and face tattoos continue to be more of a rarity, but we still get the opportunity to do these pieces on occasion.

“Sometimes we’ll get a brazen eighteen year old asking for a tattoo in a highly visible spot,” Mikey notes. “But I’ve found that typically it’s either the young-and-rebellious or the middle-aged-and-over-it crowd.”.

“I don’t have my face or neck tattooed, so it’s hard for me to talk about that kind of discrimination,” Mikey tells us. “But I do have my hands and fingers blasted.

I think people find it interesting, actually, when a tattooed, successful, articulate, and sociable person is communicating with them. The tattoos become mystic because the stigma of tattoos and the derelict expectation are both crushed.”.
