Why should you watch Squid Game? [2]

The No. 1 show on Netflix at the moment is a Korean series with an odd name.

Squid Game is the first Korean drama to hit the No. 1 spot on Netflix, reaching the milestone just four days after its release, and now marks the company’s biggest series launch ever.

Here’s what to know about the wildly popular show. Warning: Minor spoilers ahead, though I’ll only explain the basics of the show, not who lives or dies.

17, focuses on a desperately indebted group of people in South Korea. They’re first tricked into a deadly tournament of children’s games, but then many of them volunteer to come back, realizing the games may be their only chance to win the money they need to survive.

But the odds of survival aren’t good. Think The Hunger Games, only featuring contests such as Red Light, Green Light and marbles.

But Squid Game doesn’t feel like a copycat — it’s a well-done drama/horror series. Rich backstories are developed not just for the desperate contestants, but for those running the game.

You can watch the trailer here: In the first episode, main character Seong Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae) explains that Squid Game was a game kids in his neighborhood once played on a squid-shaped court.

No spoilers, but the Squid Game itself eventually comes up in the deadly tourney. No question the show has a dark theme and blood spurts freely.

But the characters are well-developed and the action moves quickly and never lets up for long.

And he’s not alone — other contestants include an elderly man who becomes the grandfather of the group, a North Korean refugee, a gangster with a snake tattoo on his face, and a highly educated man who was the pride of his hometown, but didn’t quite live up to his potential. The characters are introduced quickly and smoothly, and then the games are on.

And then.. that ending.

(Read more about Netflix and how to get it here.). Squid Game is a Netflix original drama, made in South Korea, but it’s dubbed into English.

Viewers never forget the show was originally in Korean, but the voice actors, many of whom are experienced American voice actors of Korean background, are excellent. The show doesn’t suffer when watched in English.

Some of the creepy guards in Squid Game have their own plotlines. All nine episodes of Squid Game are on Netflix already, so if you have nine hours to spare, go ahead and binge it.

It’s up to you if you want to see that in a nine-hour binge, or if you’re going to need to space out your watching and take mental health breaks. (The marbles episode is especially heavy.).

Writer/director Hwang Dong-hyuk told Variety he may return to big-screen movies before thinking about a Squid Game sequel. “I don’t have well-developed plans for Squid Game 2,” he told Variety.

But if I were to do it, I would certainly not do it alone. I’d consider using a writers’ room and would want multiple experienced directors.”.

It’s also reminiscent of Battle Royale, a 2000 Japanese film where junior high school students must fight to the death using random weapons. It’s also somewhat like the 2014 film Snowpiercer, in which people fight to survive on a never-stopping train steaming through a frozen apocalyptic world.

Some are claiming that Squid Game is suspiciously similar to a 2014 Japanese film, As The Gods Will, directed by Takashi Miike. That film itself is based on Japanese manga.

Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk told IndieWire he thought up the idea behind the show in 2008, inspired in part by real-world events. “At the time, there was the Lehman Brothers crisis.

“Over the past 10 years, there were a lot of issues: There was the cryptocurrency boom, where people around the world, especially young people in Korea, would go all in and invest all their money into cryptocurrencies. And there was the rise of IT giants like Facebook, Google, and in Korea, there’s Naver, and they are just restructuring our lives.

And in 2016, a new world event sparked Hwang to further develop the show. “And then Donald Trump became the president of the United States and I think he kind of resembles one of the VIPs in the Squid Game,” he said.

After all these issues happened, I thought it was about time that this show goes out into the world.”. People want to mimic some of the events in Squid Game — minus the murder.

Two teams of 15, wearing T-shirts featuring the show’s logo, played Red Light, Green Light, the Dalgona candy challenge, marbles, and the paper-flipping game Ddakji.

Kids who apparently watched the show even though it’s supposed to be for adults played Red Light, Green Light, and beat up those who lost. The school alerted parents and is cracking down on this behavior.

Expect to see plenty of sweatsuit-clad contestants and red-clad guards on the streets and at Halloween parties this year. There wasn’t enough warning for the big costume companies to crank into gear, so people are assembling the outfits themselves or turning to Etsy and other artist marketplaces.

What Is the Story of Squid Game Season 2? [5]

Netflix’s confirmation that Squid Game Season 2 will happen has led many to wonder when it will premiere on the streaming service.

This is on top of all the high praise from fans and critics since its arrival. Ahead of Season 2, there have been many updates about the follow-up to Squid Game’s highly-talked-about first season.

Alongside the announcement, Squid Game executive producer, director, and writer Hwang Dong-hyuk shared a heartfelt statement about the Season 2 renewal:. “Thank you for watching and loving our show.

The Front Man returns.Season 2 is coming. The man in the suit with ddakji might be back. You’ll also be introduced to Young-hee’s boyfriend, Cheol-su. Join us once more for a whole new round.”.

However, in May 2021, Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk told Vanity Fair that he anticipates that the second season could premiere on Netflix “by the end of 2023 or 2024.”. Hwang also revealed that he only has about “three pages worth of ideas” that he plans to turn into a script for Season 2 before teasing that there will be more games in the upcoming batch of episodes:.

The Squid Game creator also confirmed that Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae’s lead character) is “definitely” coming back while the mysterious Front Man from the first round of games is also expected to return.

“‘Squid Game 2’ will begin filming in the summer and the filming will likely last for about 10 months. We were working on Season 1 for about 10 months as well, but that was with delays caused by COVID-19.”.

The Squid Game lead star then teased that Season 2 will be “bigger in scale,” hinting that filming might end up being longer than Season 1:. “But seeing as Season 2 will be bigger in scale, it will probably take longer to complete.”.

It is unclear if or how Season 2 will be impacted by the events since Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk is a South Korean filmmaker and it is unknown if he’s even part of the WGA.

Squid Game Season 1 finished in an open-ended way, teasing many storytelling opportunities for Season 2. To recap, the season ended with Gi-hun turning back and not getting on the plane to the United States, indicating that he might return to the games.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter in October 2021, Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk acknowledged Season 1’s ending, but he noted that it served as a “good closure” for the whole story: “It’s true that season one ended in an open-ended way, but I actually thought that this could be good closure for the whole story, too.

And that was, in fact, my way of communicating the message that you should not be dragged along by the competitive flow of society, but that you should start thinking about who has created the whole system — and whether there is some potential for you to turn back and face it.”. The creator also teased that he wanted to explore the Front Man’s storyline with his brother in Season 2:

For example, the story of the police officer and the story of his brother, the Front Man. So if I end up creating season two, I’d like to explore that storyline — what is going on between those two brothers.

Hwang also mentioned that he would like to focus on the story of the game’s recruiter and Gi-hun’s arc:. “And then I could also go into the story of that recruiter in the suit who plays the game of ddakji with Gi-hun and gives him the card in the first episode.

So, I don’t know yet, but I’ll just say there are a lot of possibilities out there for season two storylines.”. Looking ahead, Hwang spoke with Korean broadcaster KBS, via Korea Times, to confirm that he’s already in talks with Netflix about developing Squid Game Season 3:.

We will come to a conclusion any time soon.”. In Netflix’s TUDUM event in June 2023, the streaming service, via IGN, officially announced that Season 1 stars Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-Hun, Wi Ha-jun, and Gong Yoo will all return in Season 2.

The original cast will join newcomers Yim Si-Wan, Kang Na-Heul, Park Sung-Hoon, and Yang Dong-Geun. As it stands, the future of the Squid Game franchise is brighter than ever.

Squid Game Season 1 is streaming on Netflix.

Episode 1: Streaming as of November 22 [6]

If you’re a Netflix subscriber, you know how big of a deal the South Korean drama Squid Game became.

Is it a weird, dystopian idea. Definitely.

Squid Game: The Challenge will be just like the scripted series, featuring 456 contestants who each have the chance to win $4.56 million. The series will join Netflix’s library of unscripted shows, which spans dating shows Love Is Blind to a rebooted version of The Mole.

Audiences’ interests are piqued, not just because they want to see real people try challenges they’ve only seen actors pretend to do, but because the show has already amassed controversy. The Sun reported contestants had been injured while playing challenges, and experienced freezing temperatures amidst the show’s famous “Red Light, Green Light” game.

As the Gods Will  [7]

Squid Game is now the most watched Netflix series of all time, which is to say that no matter what country you’re from, you’re connected with millions of other people around the globe with a shared love for stressful, high-stakes narratives that hinge on life-or-death situations.

If you’re hungering for more tense, nail-biting drama with a splash of gore, look no further. Here’s a list of the best dystopian Japanese movies and series for fans of Squid Game, including two titles that series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk referenced as inspiration when interviewed by Variety about his show.

Released in 2000, this gory cult classic by father-and-son duo Kinji and Kenta Fukusaku is one of the most talked about films in Japanese cinema. It’s a 113-minute bloodbath in which a group of junior high-school students are taken to a remote location under the guise of a field trip and told they must fight to the death.

It’s mindless, incomprehensible violence that at its core exposes the victims for who they really are, bringing out their best and worst traits. Based on a book and manga, it’s a film that defined its own genre, inspiring countless other movies, video games and TV series – and Squid Game is (unsurprisingly) one of them.

Available on Netflix. Children’s playground games where the losers die on the spot.

In the story, high schooler Shun Takahata feels disillusioned with his everyday life, which is dull in comparison to the violent video games he plays on a daily basis. One day, Shun finds himself trapped in a school, forced to partake in a peculiar series of games that resemble familiar childhood pastimes, but come with dangerous consequences for the losers.

Available on Netflix. Okay, no exploding heads in this one, but when the characters in this series stand to end up ¥100 million in debt in a win-or-lose challenge, the circumstances are fraught enough to make your palms sweat as if it were a matter of life and death.

The series begins with a sweet but naive young nurse called Nao Kanzaki. One day, Nao is given a suitcase filled with ¥100 million and told she must return it in one month, thus becoming a contestant in a competition called Liar Game.

Nao learns that her opponent is one of her former teachers, and while she is quick to trust him at first, she soon learns that surviving the game means becoming more ruthless than she’s ever been. Another Netflix production that took Japan by storm.

When their mischief catches the attention of nearby police, the trio escape into a bathroom only to discover they’ve suddenly been transported into what appears to be a real-life video game. Live-action Netflix adaptations of manga or anime are typically poorly received by audiences, but this series packs a punch.

Available on Netflix. The teenagers in Gossip Girl don’t hold a candle to the cut-throat ruthlessness of Hyakkaou Private Academy students.

Students who come away with all the winnings are heralded as the world’s future leaders, while those who lose and end up in debt are forced into servitude and become the ‘pets’ of their more competent classmates. The anime series, which is adapted from a manga, is every bit as twisted as it sounds, leaving you with a similar sense of dread to what you felt when you thought about the villains who invented the ‘games’ of Squid Game.

Available on Netflix. More from Time Out.

Boat and breakfast: this Yokohama Bay cruise comes with brunch at Bills. Kyoto’s Kiyomizu-dera Temple is now open at night for a special autumn light-up.

The teamLab digital art sauna in Roppongi now offers discount entry. Want to be the first to know what’s cool in Tokyo.

What should you know about “Squid Game” before watching? [8]

Bye, bye “Bridgerton.” See you later “The Crown.” Netflix has a new top-show — titled “Squid Game” — and it’s not even in the English language. Since its release on Friday, Sept.

“There’s a show on Netflix right now that is the number one in the world. Like, everywhere in the world.

“It’s only been out for nine days, and it’s a very good chance it’s going to be our biggest show ever.”. Well, this already may be true.

(It’s number two in Denmark.). Here, we break down everything you need to know about the addictive thriller if you haven’t already watched it.

Remember when we were kids playing games, the consequence to losing was dying. Well, take that idea, but make that fictional outcome a reality for adults.

“Inside, a tempting prize awaits — with deadly high stakes.”. 456 people, all who have financial struggles, are invited to participate in a mysterious survival competition to risk their lives to win the ₩45.6 billion prize ($38.5 million USD).

The two-minute-long trailer of the show gives viewers a sneak peek as to what they can expect from the series, including the lethal twists given to some of the childhood games as well as tense moments between contestants determined to win the prize money to settle their financial struggles. (Warning: the trailer contains some violence and gore.).

The trailer gives just a small taste of some of the gore and violence that occurs throughout the series as the competition is underway. But that is nothing compared to what actually takes place in the series.

Netflix first announced plans in September 2019 in a news release that director Hwang Dong-hyuk would produce a new original Korean series, initially titled “Round Six.”. The release shared a similar premise to the official summary, explaining that the game would take place in an unknown location while the participants are locked up until there was only one winner to claim the prize.

One of those games include the titular challenge, which is a literal translation of its Korean name, described as “a type of tag where offense and defense use a squid-shaped board drawn in the dirt.”. Though some viewers have drawn comparisons to films like the “Hunger Games” series, “Battle Royale,” and “As the Gods Will,” Hwang told Variety that the series was initially conceived as a film in 2008.

“When I started, I was in financial straits myself and spent much time in cafes reading comics including ‘Battle Royale’ and ‘Liar Game.’ I came to wonder how I’d feel if I took part in the games myself. But I found the games too complex, and for my own work focused instead on using kids’ games.”.

‘There’s an irony in our most beautiful and innocent memories being changed into the most horrifying reality,” he added. After starting the series, we couldn’t stop watching.

There aren’t currently any plans for a second season of the series. Hwang said that he’d consider making more feature movies before creating a second season of the show.

“It is quite tiring just thinking about it. But if I were to do it, I would certainly not do it alone.

As The Gods Will [9]

Squid Game, the Korean survival drama series from writer-director Hwang Dong-hyuk, has dominated the Netflix top 10 for weeks. But with only nine episodes in its first season, there’s a newfound demand for shows and movies similar to Squid Game, to help fill the void.

Squid Game has frequently been compared to such films as 2000’s Battle Royale and Bong Joon-ho’s Oscar-winning 2019 thriller Parasite. But we’ve plumbed the depths of our queues and collections to select the best movies and TV shows that are a bit more off the beaten path.

The premise of this Brazilian dystopian thriller series resembles that of Squid Game, with its focus on a desperate population putting themselves in mortal danger for the chance at a better life.

There’s a resistance group known as “The Cause” that’s trying to take the society of the 3% down from the inside through infiltrating the Process, as well as a murder mystery at the heart of the supposed perfect society. Barring these differences, 3% might just be what you’re looking for if you’re aching for a more sci-fi inflected take on Squid Game’s more contemporary depiction of the struggle between the haves and have-nots.

Alice in Borderland was one of the first recommendations mentioned by fans of Squid Game, in the wake of the show’s meteoric rise. It’s not surprising, given that they’re both available to stream on Netflix.

The three are mysteriously transported to a seemingly abandoned version of Tokyo, and forced to compete in a deadly series of games in order to survive. If any of the participants attempt to escape the boundaries of the play area while the game is in-progress, they are swiftly executed with a shot through the head by a mysterious laser from the sky.

The show has a very similar bent to Squid Game with its emphasis on surreal challenges, violent consequences, and heartbreaking performances. Alice in Borderland is available to stream on Netflix.

Based on the first arc of the manga series (written by Muneyuki Kaneshiro and illustrated by Akeji Fujimura), Takashi Miike’s As The Gods Will follows the story of high schooler Shun Takahata, an underachieving student who expresses boredom with the tedium of his everyday life.

As The Gods Will is more explicitly supernatural than Squid Game. Shun and his classmates are pitted against each other in a series of increasingly bizarre scenarios, such as trying to throw a bell into a hoop attached to the collar of a giant cat trying to devour them, or being killed by lasers shot by floating wooden dolls.

As The Gods Will is available to rent on Vudu. At first glance, Darwin’s Game appears very similar to Alice in Borderland, albeit with a few crucial exceptions.

He soon finds himself embroiled in a brutal life-or-death battle with a homicidal “player” in a panda suit, one who possesses their own unique supernatural ability known as a “Sigil.” When one of his friends, a fellow player, is killed while defending him from his attacker, Kaname swears to find the creators of Darwin’s Game and take his revenge on them.

It’s a decent watch if you’re itching for some more action in the vein of Squid Game, though with far less emphasis on strategy, skill, or any critique of the perniciously predatory nature of capitalism. Darwin’s Game is available to stream on Netflix, Crunchyroll, Hulu, and Funimation.

The series follows Decim, a mysterious bartender on the fifteenth floor of an impossibly large tower, who oversees the “Death Games.” This contest of randomly selected games, like darts or pool, is played from the afterlife: Recently deceased souls compete for the chance to either be reincarnated on Earth or banished to a void of non-existence.

If you’re looking for a heady, philosophical, and thoroughly entertaining survival drama that plays out like a mix between Saw and The Seventh Seal, Death Parade is an absolute must-watch. Death Parade is available to stream on Hulu.

The film centers on a group of six strangers — a college student, a grocery store worker, a stock trader, an Iraq War veteran, and an escape room enthusiast — who each received a puzzle box containing an invitation to a brand-new immersive escape room experience. It’s only after they arrive that the group realizes the escape room is deadly — and that each of them share something terrible in common.

Escape Room is available to rent on Amazon, Apple, and Vudu. The revelation at the end of the 8th episode of Squid Game — the mysterious “Front Man” behind the twisted competition was none other than Detective Hwang Jun-ho’s long lost brother In-ho, played by Lee Byung-hun — was a terrific surprise for fans of Korean cinema and television.

Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Red 2, and 2016’s The Magnificent Seven. He’s also famous for his work in Korean films like Park Chan-wook’s Joint Security Area and Kim Jee-woon’s The Good, the Bad, the Weird.

In the film, Lee stars as a secret agent who embarks on an unrelenting manhunt to find, torture, and murder the serial killer responsible for the death of his fianceé. The excellent film thoughtfully asks how much one is willing to become a monster in order to bring another monster to justice.

I Saw The Devil is available to rent on Amazon, Apple, and Vudu. Based on Nobuyuki Fukumoto’s manga series of the same name, both Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor and Kaiji: Against All Rules tell the story of Kaiji Itou, a jobless loiterer who becomes responsible for a 3 million yen loan left to him by a former friend who mysteriously disappeared.

It’s only after Kaiji agrees to play and boards the ship that he realizes the dire mortal circumstances he’s inadvertently gotten into. Kaiji might be the closest show on this list to Squid Game in terms of their respective premises, with a group of down-and-out debtors being forced to stake their very lives in contests of chance, cheating, and psychological manipulation in order to pay back their debts.

The 2016 techno-thriller Nerve has only one “game” in play: an online mediated series of “Truth-or-Dare” challenges that grow exceedingly more dangerous as players progress. The film follows Venus “Vee” Delmonico (Emma Roberts), a timid high school senior who downloads the online reality game “Nerve” at the insistence of her friends.

Doggone Dalgona! [14]

Listen up, players. A robotic voice shouted into a giant dormitory stacked to the gills with 456 bunk beds.

If you’re reading this, you probably know where I was: on the set of Netflix’s brand-new reality show, Squid Game: The Challenge.

Well, I didn’t. When I watched the South Korean drama—which follows a down-on-his-luck man who is invited to play a series of games with fatal consequences—I thought to myself, I would die immediately.

Why, you may ask. Well, Netflix staged a reality competition series, called Squid Game: The Challenge, where players would compete in games inspired by the show for a $4.56 million jackpot.

Cut to Thanksgiving week, when The Challenge premiered to the tune of more than a million viewers in the first five days. After releasing another batch of episodes this week and whittling down its playing field to just three players, The Challenge is gearing up for its endgame—which debuts next Wednesday.

Hell, I even wondered how a reality show that removed the serious social commentary of Squid Game would even work. So, after a comfortable (non-drugged) ride to the The Challenge’s production lot, I—along with a group of journalists—were prepped to start our two-day-long tour.

He was just as bewildered by the detailed recreation of the Squid Games sets as us. I asked him what it takes to win Squid Game.

Yikes. Could this possibly be the most grueling competition series to ever exist.

When we arrived to the set, we received our green tracksuits and designated numbers. For the next two days, I wasn’t Sirena He—I was 388.

In place of, you know, death—The Challenge gives each player a vest with an ink pack, which explodes when they lose a challenge.

They were fully in character. No matter how many jokes I made about competing in the “Squib Games,” the faceless guards didn’t crack.

When we signed our liability waivers that morning, we were told to be careful while climbing the beds. Cut to me a few hours later, nailing my head on a bunk bed railing.

One clause claimed that the show can’t be held liable if I suffer any “emotional damage,” prompting the natural follow-up question: What kind of emotional damage will I experience in The Challenge.

Later that day, the guards led us through the pastel-hued staircase until we reached two large doors. They pushed them open, revealing the sprawling marbles set.

Anupam Tripathi, who played the beloved Ali from the original Squid Game was present with us. “I feel like I am right back on set,” Tripathi tells me.

But we didn’t have much time—it was time to play. Just as in the original show, we would have ten minutes to play.

My partner was was another journalist from a fashion outlet. We decided to play a game from the show—the one where you put your hands behind your back, clasp the marbles in one hand, bring them in front of you, and your partner guesses which hand the marbles are in.

“Hurry up and pick already. ” he said.

Well, the thing was—I was taking my time to try to make him anxious. Because my partner had a tell.

I won all of his marbles, and since I knew that a guard wouldn’t actually shoot my friend, I did a little victory dance.

The guards handed us candy tins, and I placed my palms over the box and tried to manifest a triangle shape. By some brush of extraordinary luck—just like Director Hwang said I’d need—when I opened my tin, a neat little triangle was inside.

He didn’t react. The 10-minute countdown began.

Almost immediately after I switched to the needle, my dalgona split and took a chunk of the triangle shape with it. Even with the best candy shape, I still lost.

I heard my number, 388, over the intercom. And the squib.

SPLAT. Cold, black ink spurted out all over my chest and neck.

There she was: Younghee, the giant schoolgirl with laser eyes. The next day, we found ourselves on one end of a football field-sized playground with dozens of cameras peering in through sky-painted walls.

Here’s why: in the show, The Challenge edits the game to appear as if it’s only five minutes long. Really, contestants have to remain frozen for an indeterminable amount of time, while a group of impartial panelists analyzes the footage and decides who moved and who didn’t.

When the countdown began, I immediately broke into a sprint. My heart was pounding hard, as if Younghee’s eyes could actually shoot lasers.

Thankfully, I stopped my right foot planted on the ground, ready for my next step. I fought back a yawn.

) A voice called out the numbers of the players who were eliminated. Eventually, I reached the halfway point, clenching every muscle.

Just as I ran past the middle of the field, I heard my number over the intercom. I had to accept my fate.

This is when I went full reality-TV diva mode. “This is rigged.

“Check the video. I didn’t move.

When they finally managed to bring me backstage, I spied on my fellow contestants through the gaps in the walls where the production crew propped the cameras. “The cameras caught you moving,” a production assistant informed me.

“But.. I don’t think I moved,” I insisted, though I was beginning to doubt my own recollection.

You definitely moved,” the production assistant said.

And I just didn’t have any luck. Though I’m still considering filing a formal complaint to Netflix.

The Squid Game games [15]

Without any doubt, Squid Game has officially become one of the most successful shows on the biggest streaming service on the planet, making it a next-level, must-watch endeavor. The numbers prove that the majority of Netflix’s extensive subscriber base has seen it, but there are still some people that have continued to opt out of experiencing the addictive South Korean survival drama.

With many favorable reviews garnered, Squid Game has earned the coveted Certified Fresh designation on Rotten Tomatoes and received much-deserved praise from several prominent outlets within the industry. And when it comes to fan reception, more than 111 million people have seen the well-crafted series following a group of people in immense debt competing in children’s games repurposed where contestants’ lives are literally on the line.

There are very many reasons to get excited about Squid Game, but the main one is pretty obvious. The redesigned family-friendly games meant for young ones are what truly keep audiences on the edge of their seats, excited to see what comes next.

Still, they somehow manage to keep that somewhat enchanting and whimsical vibe one experiences when walking through the parks at Disney. Overall, Squid Game proves that execution is everything in more ways than one.

Can a 12-year-old watch ‘Squid Game’? [16]

It’s official: “Squid Game” is Netflix’s biggest series launch ever, but with so much hype around the show, parents are left wondering whether the series is OK for kids to watch. “Squid Game” is a Korean thriller that adds a deadly twist to classic childhood games all in the pursuit of a top $38 million cash prize.

The short answer is simple: “Squid Game” is not appropriate for kids under the age of 17. The age rating for “Squid Game” on Netflix is TV-MA, which means for mature audiences only.

This program may contain one or more of the following: crude indecent language, explicit sexual activity, or graphic violence.”. Some parents may have more specific questions, especially when it comes to handling kids who are begging to watch the violent series.

“I still think for that age range it’s not appropriate.”. Knight said that because our brains are not fully developed until age 25, allowing graphic violence, such as that shown in the Netflix series, can feel overwhelming.

“But children cannot differentiate as much as we think. So when we’re sending in these images and expecting them to do what an adult can do, it’s unrealistic for them.”.

“They’re taking childhood games that they’re playing on the school yard, like red light/green light and tug of war, so children are actively playing these games with their friends,” Knight said. “Now they’re being exposed to it in a way where killing is involved and it’s life-threatening.”.

“Many children won’t verbalize that, because they still want to watch it,” Knight said. “They won’t tell their parents that (the show) is freaking them out and they’re not sleeping at night.”.

“They want so badly to be involved in this mature activity, and to be included,” she explained, adding that a lot of times parents feel like they need to give a “yes or no” response. “If they just say no, their kids will act out or be fully disappointed and they don’t want the guilt trip that comes with it.”.

“Have a family meeting, sit down together as a family, and talk about, ‘OK, this is really important to you. Your friends are watching a show called ‘Squid Game.’ What do you know about it.

“That doesn’t mean that the parent isn’t going to hold the firm boundary, but by inviting a child into the conversation and really being curious with them, it’s not so one-sided.”. The mom of two and educator noted that this approach can work with other topics as well.

“Kids are really smart. When they’re asked these questions and they’re using their critical thinking skills, they will often come to the conclusion you wanted.”.

This is not an uncommon parenting situation. “Kids can feel especially left out if their friends are doing it,” Knight said.

What is the plot for season 2? [17]

Netflix’s Squid Game, a hugely successful breakout series that first aired on the streaming platform in 2021, tells the eerie story of a secret contest where debtors risk their lives to play a slew of children’s games in hopes of winning a massive cash pot.

It was also nominated for 14 Emmys in 2022, and raked in six wins across categories. People truly couldn’t stop obsessing over the show, going so far as to dress up as the characters from the show for Halloween that year.

So, of course, people have been super excited to hear that Netflix will be dropping a second season at some point. The show’s director actually confirmed the news on X (formerly Twitter) way back in June of 2022.

And what happened at the end of season 1 again. Here’s the deal.

Squid Game’s inaugural season starts out with divorced dad Seong Gi-Hun getting invited to play a series of children’s games for a chance at win a massive cash prize. He’s taken to a mystery location and put in a green tracksuit, along with 455 other players.

They’re all watched over by masked guards in pink jumpsuits, along with the Front Man, who wears a black mask and black uniform. When people lose a game during the competition, they are killed, and more money is added to the cash pot.

At the end, Gi-Hun, Sae-Byeok, and Sang-Woo are the only ones left. Sang-Woo stabs Sae-Byeok in the dormitories after a celebratory steak dinner and she dies.

Sang-Woo ends up killing himself and asks Gi-Hun to take care of his mother as he dies.

But fans also learn that the games are a form of entertainment for a group of uber-wealthy people, and that the Front Man is the missing brother of one the police detectives working on the case, Detective Hwang. The Front Man ends up shooting Hwang, who falls off of a cliff (it’s unclear if he dies).

He ends up turning back, seemingly to get revenge on the Front Man and the people behind the Squid Game.

You can watch it here: The official plot of season 2 hasn’t been revealed.

“I have no idea what will happen or the scale of it, but the only thing [director Hwang] did tell me was that Seong Gi-Hun is going to be in the show again, and he’s going to be playing in the arena again,” he said.

The teaser trailer shows the dormitories, arena, and guards in pink uniforms, along with a lot of players in green tracksuits. Plus, the director wrote on X in 2022 that, “the man in the suit with ddjakji might be back” and “you’ll also be introduced to Young-hee’s boyfriend, Cheol-su.”.

if her “boyfriend” is involved, it definitely sounds like there are more games to be played. There are a few characters who will returning for a second round, according to an X statement from series creator Hwang Dong-Hyuk: Gi-Han (played by Lee Jung-Jae), the Front Man (played by Lee Byung-Hun), and “the man in the suit with ddakji” (played by Gong Yoo).

A Netflix cast announcement also includes these members: The Squid Game universe also includes a reality show called The Challenge, where people compete to win a $4.56 million cash prize.

So, if you’re seriously interested in taking part in the reality show while you wait for the OG Squid Game season 2 to drop, you can visit SquidGameCasting.com to learn about next steps. Nope.

Stay tuned for more updates here as the director and Netflix share more insights.

When is ‘Squid Game’ Season 2 coming? [18]

Attention all players: Netflix’s “Squid Game: The Challenge” might not be what you’re expecting. The streaming giant on Wednesday unleashes the follow-up to creator Hwang Dong-hyuk’s 2021 South Korean viral series, “Squid Game.” But it’s not another harrowing chapter of the chilling survival drama depicting contestants getting killed in a bloody secret contest filled with macabre children’s games.

22) is a 10-episode reality series featuring 456 real contestants playing the same children’s games for a cash prize of $4.56 million. So that means no blood (thankfully) and obviously, no one dies.

29 and the finale on Dec. 6.

Netflix’s most-watched series received 14 Emmy nominations and won six, including best lead actor in a drama series for Lee Jung-jae, who played contestant Seong Gi-hun, also known as Player 456.

“It was almost inviting this unscripted series to be made.”. The entire “Squid Game” set was recreated on six massive stages around London for the 456 primarily British and American contestants, which include a mother-son duo.

“It’s a very immersive world that people genuinely didn’t leave,” says executive producer Tim Harcourt. “People showered, used the restrooms, ate there.

The memorable “Squid Game” features are all in “The Challenge.” Contestants leave the dorms and walk through the eerie labyrinthine stairwells guarded by distinctive masked guards. The most horrifying and memorable “Squid Game” sequence, the Red Light/Green Light game, was constructed in a separate 100,000-square-foot former airplane hangar.

But there was no shooting as on the original series. Each player wore tracking devices, and if they moved after “Red Light,” a black dye-pack canister on their uniform exploded, eliminating them from the game as they were instructed to roll over and play dead.

“The prize, the biggest in Netflix history, compensates for the fact that obviously we weren’t going to shoot our contestants,” says Lambert. “We needed something of a huge scale so that (players) could be invested.”.

The dorm piggy bank fills with ever more money the more people are “killed” off. An elaborate computer graphic effect on “Squid Game,” the clear piggy bank was fully constructed for “The Challenge,” filling with the equivalent of $10,000 with every elimination.

Backlash around “The Challenge” has centered on two issues: Disappointed fans were expecting a new drama season ― the first streamed more than two years ago, in Septmber 2021 ― but instead get a reality show built around children’s games. The series has received mixed critical reviews, with a 63% positive rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

Lambert calls the claims “completely untrue,” saying that the welfare of the participants was paramount and the games were “rigorously checked. It’s very easy when you’ve been eliminated from a game to anonymously make all kinds of claims,” says Lambert.

The idea that Netflix would contemplate giving away their largest prize ever, and not ensure it was scrupulously fair, is just ridiculous.”. If you’re not into “The Challenge,” creator Hwang is working on the second “Squid Game,” which started filming in July.

However, fans will have to wait until at least late 2024 for the series to come to Netflix.

This is the Oct. 5, 2021, edition of the Wide Shot, a weekly newsletter about everything happening in the business of entertainment.

If you’re enjoying the Wide Shot, tell us. Or better yet, tell your friends.

It’s been a remarkable few weeks for Netflix.

Netflix, which rarely makes major acquisitions, continued its aggressive push for dominance by making two intriguing deals in successive weeks, announcing the purchase of late author Roald Dahl’s catalog and the Glendale-based game company Night School Studio.

The brutal show went viral after its Sept. 17 premiere, producing innumerable memes that, like so many things on social media, are incomprehensible to anyone not in the know.

Perhaps most surprisingly, the series’ unexpected popularity even caught the attention of rival Jeff Bezos, who raised eyebrows over the weekend when he shared his praise of Hastings and Sarandos on Twitter.

“Impressive and inspiring. (And I can’t wait to watch the show.)”.

“Something’s up,” tweeted Franklin Leonard, founder of the Black List. To clarify, Bezos answered: “No, just simple admiration.” (For what it’s worth, if you thought Amazon was going to get regulatory heat for its MGM deal, just imagine what would happen if it went after Netflix.).

Sarandos has spoken admiringly of Disney+, for example. Virgin Galactic’s Richard Branson tweeted his congratulations to Bezos for his Blue Origin space flight.

Still, the embrace of “Squid Game” is a clear validation of Netflix’s approach to global productions, after previous successes with non-English-language shows including “Money Heist” (Spain), “Who Killed Sara. ” (Mexico) and “Barbarians” (Germany).

Sarandos told Kara Swisher at Vox Media’s Code Conference that “Squid Game” could deliver record viewership for the service, in any language.

“It’s only been out for nine days, and it’s a very good chance it’s going to be our biggest show ever.”. Chalk up another win for global TV head Bela Bajaria, who has played a key role in helping Netflix generate large audiences for its non-English-language original series, including dramas and reality shows.

subscribers watched at least one non-English title in the last year, as my colleague Wendy Lee recently wrote. “We just want shows to represent the world as it is,” Bajaria told Lee about the international push.

The global focus makes sense, given that only 35% of Netflix’s subscribers are from the U.S. and Canada and that most of its subscriber increases are international.

We’ll learn more when the company reports third-quarter earnings Oct. 19.

Netflix’s worldwide focus was on display during the company’s three-hour fan event last month, where, among other things, it featured a bevy of Korean programming. Korean content, in particular, has increasingly enjoyed crossover success, reflected by the popularity of K-pop and the Oscar victory of Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite.”.

Naming the occasion “Tudum,” an onomatopoeia of the chime that rings before Netflix’s originals, was a play on the company’s global brand, implying that people around the world recognize that sound, even if they don’t necessarily know how to spell it. There’s a simple reason for Bezos to express his admiration for Netflix: Amazon, like other streamers, is also investing in global streaming growth.

Internationally, the number of Prime members streaming Prime Video grew about 80% in 2020, compared with the previous year, and international customers doubled the hours of content they watched, according to the company. Next year, Amazon Studios will have more than 160 local productions.

Hollywood crews have voted overwhelmingly in favor of waging a strike if their union cannot agree to a new contract, setting the stage for an extraordinary showdown with the major studios, Anousha Sakoui reported. The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees said 52,706 members, or nearly 99% of those who cast ballots, voted in favor of a strike authorization.

Union officials strongly encouraged members to vote in favor, noting that a failed authorization vote would reduce leverage in negotiations. These numbers mean the threat of a strike is serious.

IATSE and the group representing studios and producers, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), are set to resume negotiations Tuesday. Read more about what the vote means.

Ever since its premiere on Netflix, Squid Game has enraptured and disturbed so many viewers around the world that the streaming giant already predicts that the Korean dystopian thriller will become its most popular show, ever. Of course it’s not hard to see why.

Netflix’s record-breaking hit made history at the Emmy Awards. Star Lee Jung-jae took home the prize for Lead Actor in a Drama Series, becoming the first Korean actor to win in the category, while the show’s creator Hwang Dong-hyuk won the statue for Best Directing in a Drama series, making Squid Game the first foreign-language series to nab the award.

If you happen to be one of the only people left on the planet who hasn’t binged the series, now is your chance to catch up—Netflix announced last summer that the show is coming back for a sophomore season (see below) and director Hwang even teased a few details of the plot on the Emmys red carpet, telling Deadline that Lee’s character Gi-hun, winner of the grisly games in season 1, will be driven by revenge in season 2.

For those who have yet to binge all 9 episodes, the Hunger Games-meets-Parasite premise of Squid Game is that 456 people who are desperate for money are invited to a creepy facility where, over the course of six days, they’ll play various children’s games (some are specifically Korean, like the Dalgona candy challenge and the titular Squid Game, while others are more universal, like Tug of War).

At the center of the story is protagonist Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae), an unemployed gambling addict running from loan sharks who appears to grapple most deeply with the grotesque moral compromises these players are forced to confront as the games progress. But there can only be one winner, and ultimately it’s Gi-hun.

Still, Squid Game leaves several questions unanswered. First is the origin story of the Front Man, the mysterious masked presider who, as it turns out, was himself a winner of the games several years ago.

Second is the greater conspiracy behind the whole purpose of it all, which is for rich, white “VIPs” to seek entertainment and sick pleasure from watching poor Koreans kill each other for money.

The show’s creator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk originally had no plans to write a sequel, he recently shared a few ideas for a sophomore run with the Sunday Times. “While I was writing season one, I thought about the stories that could be in season two if I get to do one—one would be the story of the Front Man,” he said.

I see it on the global news that the police force can be very late on acting on things—there are more victims or a situation gets worse because of them not acting fast enough. This was an issue that I wanted to raise.

Thankfully, Squid Game will be returning for a second season. In a letter to fans, Hwang Dong-hyuk, Squid Game’s writer, director and executive producer, wrote, “It took 12 years to bring the first season of Squid Game to life last year.

As the writer, director, and producer of ‘Squid Game,’ a huge shout out to fans around the world. Thank you for watching and loving our show.”.

The Front Man returns. Season 2 is coming.

You’ll also be introduced to Young-hee’s boyfriend, Cheol-su. Join us once more for a whole new round.”.

They will be joined by twelve new cast members:. Details on their roles have yet to be shared publicly.

We can expect Squid Game season two sometime in 2024, and Squid Game: The Challenge will premiere this November. Watch Squid Game on Netflix.

Who are the English dubbing voice cast? [25]

But for many watching in the English speaking world, the question on everyone’s lips (beyond will there be a Squid Game season 2) has been what language was originally on the actor’s lips in the show. The answer to this question is yes, Squid Game is dubbed into English.

A series of voice actors have dubbed the show into English so that those who don’t speak Korean do not need to switch subtitles on, however, it is possible to change the settings on Netflix to hear the original actor’s voices with subtitles should you so choose. Sign up to receive the freshest reviews and recommendations for Streaming and On Demand.

You can unsubscribe at any time. Beyond the original Squid Game cast you see on screen, there are a series of voice actors who have performed the English language version of the show for dubbing.

Read more about Squid Game: Not everyone loves dubbing, with many preferring to watch a show in the original language with subtitles.

It’s simple. First find Squid Game on Netflix and press play on episode one.

Here, select “Korean (original)” and the show will play in the original language and default to English subtitles. You can also select the subtitles to be in a selection of other languages should you so wish.

All of Us Are Dead [26]

Park Hae-soo, Lee Jung-jae, and HoYeon Jung, Squid Game. Squid Game took the world by storm when it premiered in Sept.

The dystopian Netflix thriller combined interesting characters, high stakes, relevant themes of class conflict, and a distinctive visual style in a way that turned it into the biggest TV hit of 2021, connecting with millions of viewers all over the world. It gives hope to TV creators that original ideas can still be massive hits if they’re executed right.

And part of the secret to Squid Game’s success is that it’s not actually that original. There are a lot of other shows and movies that will remind you in some way or another of creator Hwang Dong-hyuk’s series about a game where debt-ridden people compete to the death for an enormous sum of money.

While you wait for Squid Game Season 2, check out these other shows and movies, many of which hail from Korea and other parts of Asia. They feature high-stakes games with major consequences, or are bleak tales of morality.

Physical: 100. The reality competition series Physical: 100 is essentially a real-life Squid Game, minus the gory deaths and string-pulling behind the scenes.

The Korean series puts a premium on the perfect human body, enlisting bodybuilders, MMA fighters, military personnel, and more, creating of roster of intense, ripped Adonises whose muscles have muscles. The competition is fierce, and with the various disciplines on display — strongmen vs.

— it’s also reminiscent of the Jean-Claude Van Damme classic Bloodsport. Yes, there’s an actual Squid Game reality show coming, but Physical: 100 got here first and there are no reports that people nearly died competing in it.

Olivia Scott Welch, Panic. This young adult series came out on Prime Video a few months before Squid Game.

It’s set in the small, dead-end town of Carp, Texas. Every summer, graduating high school seniors compete in a competition called “Panic,” where they perform dangerous challenges to try to win $50,000, enough money to get the hell out of Carp.

-Liam Mathews. Lee Yoo-mi, All of Us Are Dead.

It’s Netflix’s third-most-popular series not in English ever. The jolting thriller about a zombie virus outbreak at a high school follows students as they desperately fight against flesh-eating monsters — some of whom had been their human friends just minutes before.

All of Us Are Dead, which is based on the webtoon Now at Our School, is a fresh take on the zombie genre with its centering of teen characters and its setting that transforms ordinary classrooms into vicious battlegrounds. As the virus spreads beyond the walls of the school, the show’s exploration of Squid Game-esque themes including the corruption of authority and the abuse of power also becomes increasingly apparent.

Hellbound. If Squid Game was your first Korean drama, then be sure to give the new Netflix thriller Hellbound a whirl to see what else Korean TV producers do best.

When angels begin to descend upon Earth to let sinners know when they will die and that they’re being taken to hell via a trio of smoking creatures who beat the victims to a bloody pulp before frying them, the rest of the world begins to take notice, especially a religious cult who see this as God’s answer to our growing ambivalence of right and wrong.

More recommendations: Lee Sun-Kyun, Dr.

For the next level of Korean dramas, be sure to check out Dr. Brain, a psychological sci-fi thriller that debuted on Apple TV+ in November 2021.

It is, like Squid Game, absolutely insane as it deals with tapping into the minds of the dead and living and visualizes what that might look like (answer: like a psychedelic nightmare), but it’s also rooted in emotion that drives the story.

It’s possible that the creators of Squid Game watched the anime Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor and decided to make a live-action series based on it, because the similarities are uncanny. Its lead is a man in debt who’s offered the opportunity of a lifetime to compete in a series of games with others who are in the red to pay off what he owes.

Like Squid Game, it’s brutal, with characters facing extreme risks, but there’s even more trickery going on as competitors try to outdo each other to shave down their debts.

If you simplify Squid Game down to “you play and win a game OR YOU DIE. ,” then the Japanese Netflix series Alice in Borderland is the perfect follow-up.

Unlike Squid Game, the challenge is solving problems rather than competing against others, and once the games start, they keep coming. As does the grisly violence.

#Alive. If you enjoyed the rare glimpses of humanity in Squid Game between Seong Gi-hun (no.

001), you’ll probably enjoy Netflix’s #Alive, a Korean zombie thriller about a young man who locks himself in his apartment during a zombie apocalypse. Amidst the carnage and chaos, he discovers another survivor not too far away whom he bonds with.

Park Kyu-young, Sweet Home. Need more of that dark, bonkers Korean drama energy that Squid Game has.

There are no shady corporations pulling strings on games, but like Squid Game, there’s good interpersonal drama when there’s not insane action. (Also, there are monster fights.

Battle Royale. It’s not the original “put a bunch of people together and have them kill each other to survive” movie, but it’s one of the earliest to really define the genre’s meaningless violence for today’s audiences.

The 2000 Japanese film is set in a time when a totalitarian government takes very extreme measures to curb juvenile delinquency: a high school class is taken to an island where they’re told to kill each other until one person is left alive. It doesn’t sound like that great of a plan, but it is that great of a movie.

The Purge. There are no games of life and death to be played in USA Network’s The Purge, but if they did happen, they wouldn’t be illegal.

Admittedly, the series isn’t America’s crowning artistic achievement, but if the mayhem of Squid Game is what you’re after, then The Purge will provide it. (Just don’t look for much else.).

Adults shouldn’t have all the fun in competing against each other for prosperity. The Brazilian young adult series 3% is set during the reign of a — say it with me — totalitarian government in which 20-year-olds have one chance to escape living in poverty and live among the rich and happy on an island paradise.

The tests range from a simple interview to solving fake crime scenes to deciphering hallucinations caused by gas. But like Squid Game, the objective is to make it to the next round.

Squid Game: The Challenge Episode 10: When Is Squid Game’s Final Episode? [27]

Green light: new episodes of Squid Game: The Challenge are streaming on Netflix. The controversial reality competition series dropped a new batch of episodes after last week’s “Trick or Treat” cliffhanger — and the stakes are even higher in episodes 6-9.

Contestants who survive this next round of eliminations will compete in the Squid Game: The Challenge finale for Netflix’s largest cash prize in reality television history: $4.56 million.

New episodes of Squid Game: The Challenge release globally at 12:00 a.m. Pacific Time.

Squid Game: The Challenge Episode 6, “Goodbye,” premiered Wednesday with episodes 7, 8, and 9.

Squid Game: The Challenge’s last episode, “One Lucky Day,” premieres Wednesday, December 6.

As the money piles up, another elimination test looms.

As the clock ticks, the players move quickly to get to the other side of the bridge. Back in the dormitory, evading elimination becomes a dicey mission.

Emotions run high in a guessing game centered on trust. Who will make it to the final round.

The Squid Game: The Challenge winner is revealed in the finale.

Squid Game: The Challenge episodes 1-9 are now streaming on Netflix.

Who are the final contestants in Squid Game: The Challenge? [28]

Everybody loves Squid Game. When it first debuted on Netflix during the pandemic in 2021, the world couldn’t get enough of the South Korean battle royale series.

The competitors would compete in a series of children’s games such as Red Light, Green Light, with success advancing them to the next level and failure resulting in certain death. Doesn’t sound like great material for a reality show, right.

The successful series has been transformed into a reality competition series called Squid Game: The Challenge. Just like the show, 456 players will compete in a series of challenges from the show along with new games for a chance to win, you guessed it, $4.56 million.

But when is Squid Game: The Challenge‘s season one finale streaming. Read below for the answer.

ET/6:00 p.m. PT on Wednesday, December 6.

Out of 456 contestants, only three remain to complete in the final episode: Who will win the 4.56 million jackpot.

Squid Game: The Challenge becomes the latest reality television series on Netflix’s roster. Popular reality shows on Netflix include Love Is Blind, Is It Cake.

Netflix has recently expanded into live sports the golf competition, The Netflix Cup. The streamer has produced several popular sports documentary series, including Formula 1: Drive to Survive, Full Swing, Quarterback, and Break Point.

The ad-supported plan – Standard with ads – remains at $7/month. Almost all movies and television shows on Netflix are available on this tier, but some will be excluded due to restrictions.

The price increased for the Premium tier, which moves from $20/month to $23/month. This ad-free tier features unlimited programs on six supported devices.

Squid Game: The Challenge will attempt to recapture the magic of Squid Game by trying to replicate the look and feel of the popular Netflix TV show. Many of the same games from the show will be played in the reality series, including the iconic Red Light, Green Light game, with the giant doll overseeing the contestants’ movements.

Players must form alliances in the competition, similar to how Seong Gi-hun worked with Cho Sang-woo and Kang Sae-byeok. As the synopsis states, players will make “friends and enemies to make millions.” Only one person will be left at the end of the competition and walk away with a record $4.56 million, the largest single cash prize in reality television and game show history.
