But to me, this chapter was more of a stepping stone than anything else. That saddens me a bit.

What I couldn’t help but notice though is that the King put Momoze in that coffin of sorts and that room looks a lot like the Greed Island control center. Early the King said that the 200,000 passengers were sacrifices, and I’m beginning not only to think their are constraints as Kurapika postulates, but the entire zone of the Black Whale has been instilled with basic nen rules as Greed Island was.

How that power manifests, what the King’s purpose is, and how that will eventually alter the courses of so many other characters goals will be fascinating to see. I can’t help but feel, that along with many deaths, we might see some strange partnerships form amidst the coming maelstrom.

It reminds me of the idea of a”Gu” mentioned a few chapters back. Two hundred thousand poisonous monsters (where the monsters are humans, and the poison is Nen) killing each other in a closed container during the course of 3 (weeks.

oh well) until it’s all concentrated into the next King.

One theory going around is that the Spider metaphor came about because Chrollo’s plan was effectively to transform Meteor City in a “web” for criminals. They enter the place believing it to be a lawless free-for-all devoid of any consequences, and get caught in the Spider’s web.

He wants to become a big baddie precisely to steer people from coming to this place and messing with its inhabitants. Why would he want to draw them IN the place, it seems self-contradictory.

Though obviously what actually happened would be serious overkill if that was the case. I think he the overkill is because Sarasa was only an example highlighting the underlying problem.

After nearly 20 years of garnishing all the hype an anime can possibly garnish, Hunter X Hunter has spent the last two years on hiatus and this is not the first time fans have had to wait for new issues of Shonen Jump to continue on with the story. The Phantom Troupe, a group of thieves, who had slaughtered Kurapika’s clan, are also gathering at Yorknew City.

Leorio and Kurapika leave again, returning the focus to Gon and Killua. Gon and Killua are able to join a team hired by the billionaire, Battera, to play the game.

As the story progresses, a player nicknamed the Bomber is blowing other players up. Gon, Killua, and Biscuit team up with other players and take the Bomber out.

After leaving Greed Island, Gon and Killua meet up with Kite. They’re all hired to investigate a strange insect leg that washed up on a beach.

The Chimera Ants proceed to wipe most of the population out and spawn hundreds of offspring for next generation before Gon, Killua, and Kite arrive to stop her.

A new Hunter chairman is needed, so the Zodiacs are gathered to establish a new election for their new Hunter chairman. Ging Freecss, one of the Zodiac members, is leading the establishment.

These events act as a backdrop to the efforts of Killua and his servants, who wish to revive a hospitalized Gon using the Nen ability of Alluka Zoldyck. Illumi, aided by Hisoka, attempts to stop Killua due to the potential dangers attached to using Alluka’s powers.

Under the patronage of the Kakin Empire, Isaac Netero’s son launches an expedition to the forbidden Dark Continent. The return of Hunter X Hunter has been welcomed with enthusiasm by manga fans worldwide, but after four years of hiatus, readers can be understandably confused about what’s going on in the story. The fact that the new chapter picks up right where the previous one left, while logical, also hurts Hunter X Hunter’s return because it plunges readers into the middle of a very complex storyline.

However, the beloved mangaka has been suffering from poor health for a very long time, which made Hunter X Hunter’s serialization sporadic at best. The current story arc in the manga, the Succession Contest arc, began in 2014, and it’s nowhere close to its conclusion.

Hunter X Hunter resumed serialization in October 2022 with chapter #391, which picks up right where the previous one left, in the middle of the deadly succession contest between the fourteen princes of the Kakin Empire, aboard the Black Whale ship headed to the Dark Continent.

Each one of the families is sponsored by one of the princes, so they get involved in the succession war. Chapter #391 shows three members of the Xi-Yu family fighting against and easily dispatching three members of the rival Heil-Ly family while searching for Hisoka, who is hiding on the ship.

Quite simply, there are too many storylines developing at the same time. After the revelation of the existence of the Dark Continent and the announced expedition to colonize this mysterious and dangerous new world, fans expected that this would be the next setting of the story.

On the ship, the Kakin princes fight for succession, while Kurapika (the only “main” character appearing in this arc) searches for the eyes of his murdered clan. Meanwhile, the Phantom Troupe and Hisoka are playing a cat-and-mouse game on the ship, trying to kill each other.

This is all incredibly intriguing and interesting, but such a complex scenario is not best suited for a manga that has just resumed serialization after four years. Togashi is well aware that his health issues prevent the regular publication of his manga.

The confrontation between Kurapika and the dreadful prince Tserriednich, for example, is one that readers have been looking forward to, just as well as the final showdown between Hisoka and the Phantom Troupe. While the introduction of new characters (and their Nen abilities) is interesting, ultimately fans of Hunter X Hunter want to see the overarching story of the manga progress, along with its main characters.

The chapters of the Hunter × Hunter manga series are written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi and first published by Shueisha in the Japanese magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump. The first chapter was published on March 2, 1998, with subsequent chapters released with intermittent breaks ranging from one to seven weeks.

The TV series is based only on the first 11 volumes of the manga, as frequent delays in the publication of the manga and an unwillingness to produce low quality “filler” episodes resulted in a lack of content. Three DVD OVA series were produced by Nippon Animation, adapting subsequent chapters of the manga up to Chapter 185.

Instead of continuing the story from the OVA series, it restarted the story from the beginning of the manga in an attempt to adapt it more accurately. The series was produced by Madhouse and aired on Nippon Television for 148 episodes from October 2, 2011 to September 24, 2014.

The current manga chapters have been compiled into 36 tankōbon volumes in Japan by Shueisha. The first tankōbon was released on June 4, 1998, the most recent on October 4, 2018.

His previous Tweet, announcing that he finished work on Chapter 400, is dated November 22, 2022, preceding that chapter’s December 26 publication by about a month.

Furthermore, Togashi goes on to state that he has not yet finalized a system for producing new work, but is still happy that he’s been able to gradually increase his ability to remain at his desk. It’s a question all fans of the series have asked: Who are the strongest or most powerful characters in Hunter x Hunter. And, considering all the characters involved, the answer isn’t quite that simple.

Yoshihiro Togashi’s Hunter x Hunter universe is arguably one of the strongest of any anime. Incredible displays of strength and skill with weapons are riddled throughout the series from the first arc to the last, with many peaks in the story.

With so many strong characters, it is difficult to compare them collectively and deduce exactly which ones stand above the rest. This list will help fans better understand the hierarchy of power within the series and the true capabilities of the strongest Hunter x Hunter characters.

Razor is one of the Game Masters in The Greed Island arc, and he is a powerful Emitter who can also make use of Manipulation. He has a lifetime debt to Gon’s father after he bravely saved him from execution and enlisted him.

He doesn’t feature higher on the list because he is eventually defeated during an unlikely game of dodgeball, but he is no less an incredibly powerful character that deserves to be on the list. Feitan Portor is one of the more unsavoury characters in the Hunter x Hunter universe, serving as an interrogator and torturer for his group, the Phantom Troupe.

He is a man of few words, only further helped by his usual use of a bandana that covers his mouth. When he is angered, his words are unintelligible, as he speaks in a language that isn’t known or common in the world of Hunter x Hunter.

This one might be surprising to most people. If you look at “Bisky”, you would never think that she is a Double-Star Stone Hunter who earned her way into being one of the most challenging combatants of the Greed Island Arc where Razor stands as the game master.

She has a few forms throughout the series and manga, one of which is a young girl resembling a porcelain doll with cute blonde hair and a pink dress. This feminine and girly portrayal is her favoured appearance.

She is a tall, very muscular woman, wearing the same dress that is now almost impossible to fit around her extremely muscular body. He might only be a Single-Sea Hunter in the Hunter x Hunter universe, but he is also the master of both the Beast Hunters Knuckle Bine and Shoot McMahon.

Calm, patient, and experienced as a hunter, Morel is a skilled planner who has the time and the willingness to wait and see whether his plans will come to fruition before trying to come up with another one. Of all the characters introduced in the series, Ging Freecss, the father of Gon Freecss, is likely the most mysterious when it comes to his power.

Although the majority of his missions were focused on restoring ruins, his power rivals the strongest hunter which gave him the potential to serve as the heir to Chairman Netero. And for that reason, he is one of the most powerful characters in Hunter x Hunter.

His unique Nen abilities allow him to transform his body into a rubber-like substance he refers to as “Bungee Gum.” In addition to his Nen powers, his mercilessness makes him even more deadly. Formerly a member of the Phantom Troupe, Hisoka makes several character changes throughout the series, taking turns as a supporting character and even as a secondary antagonist.

The legendary assassin is the head of the Zoldyck family. Silva is immune to all poison and can swiftly kill an individual in a moment by removing the heart.

His children include Killua Zoldyck, Illumi Zoldyck, Zeno Zoldyck, Kalluto Zoldyck, and Alluka Zoldyck. Founder and leader of the Phantom Troupe, Chrollo demonstrated his incredible power as he fought on even ground against the team of Silva and Zeno Zoldyck.

Chrollo has the incredible power of Specialization, allowing him to use a Skill Hunter ability. This frightening ability allows him to steal abilities from others, which he has done with abilities like Teleportation, The Sun and Moon, and Black Voice.

Furthermore, his strong wits and craftiness allow him to fight in unconventional ways. It should come as no surprise that he was a part of the Chimera Ant King’s Royal Guard, a testament to his strength and skill as a fighter.

It’s because of his power and strength that he was one of the Chimera Ant King’s three Royal Guards in his day. The strongest of the three Royal Guards of the Chimera Ants, Pitou was the quickest and could deliver the strongest blows with her muscular legs and sharp claws.

Netero spent years alone training to perfect the speed and strength of his chop. This eventually evolved into one of the most diverse and most powerful sets of attacks in the series, known as 100-Type Guanyin Bodhisattva.

His downfall ultimately results from a change of heart after observing a blind Gungi world champion named Komugi. Although Meruem was naturally the strongest character in Hunter x Hunter (2011), Gon Freecss surpasses his power through limitless rage after the death of his friend and mentor, Kite.

While there are many who are able to master the trait, these characters are the most powerful Nen users. Although he is proficient in multiple Nen-types (including Emission, Conjuration and Enhancement), Hisoka is known as master Transmuter.

Seeing as he is the main character of Hunter x Hunter, it’s probably not surprising that Gon is one of the most powerful Nen users in the anime. With more than one Nen ability, Gon is an Enhancer with Emission and Transmutation techniques.

As a result, he is able to master just about every Nen type there is. He has even fought other Nen users like Hisoka and Silva Zoldyck.

Gon’s father, a Double-Star Ruins Hunter, is also a strong Nen user. In fact, Netero believes he is one of the most powerful.

Even though he is a fairly old man, Zeno Zoldyck is incredibly experienced in Nen. He is not only super quick, but he has years of experience as an assassin.

News: A recent interview with mangaka Togashi has stirred up the anime community, particularly those who follow the beloved manga series Hunter x Hunter. In this leaked interview, Togashi dropped a bombshell by expressing his desire to unveil the manga’s conclusion in the unfortunate event of his own passing.

Due to his ongoing health challenges, Togashi has faced difficulties in finishing the latest installments of Hunter x Hunter, fueling concerns among fans that the series may remain incomplete. Note: at the time of writing, I have watched through episode 76. I was about to start off this post by saying I didn’t know why I began watching Hunter x Hunter, but I remembered before I started down that erroneous path.

Now, I had heard good things (not great, but good) about Hunter x Hunter before, but when someone asked this question and people began saying that HxH was the better of the two, I was intrigued. Why.

While there are a few anime which I personally like more than FMA: Brotherhood, I have not yet seen another show that deals with the diversity of themes, portrays the range of emotions, has the intensity of suspense and action, all in one, like it. I understand the basis of the comparison. Gon and Killua have a camaraderie that almost nears the level of Ed and Al, but it’s not quite there.

Don’t get me wrong, I have enjoyed every moment of HxH so far (well, almost every moment), but it is nowhere in the league of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. So now that this question has been settled, what did I think of Hunter x Hunter.

My first thought was that I was happy to be watching a long shounen again. It is always a fun ride to latch onto a colorful, personable group of characters and ride along with them through adventure after adventure.

Each arc has either successfully and seamlessly lead into the next one, or has possessed aspects and hints and movement towards another arc. One of the best examples of this is during the Phantom Troupe arc, during which Gon and Killua begin to hunt the Phantom Troupe, just as Kurapika is, but with the intention of winning a bounty so they can buy a copy of Greed Island, which in turn is a step towards Gon finding his father.

My second thought was that Hunter x Hunter is littered with archetypes. That’s ARCHETYPES, not stereotypes or cliches.

Because with sharply defined genres, such as fantasy writing or the shounen series, the audience is entering that piece with a series of expectations that it expects to be met. Archetypes resonate with the audience on a fundamental level, which is why they are so powerful and why having more of them makes a work stronger.

The important distinction to make is that archetypes are skeletons, upon which the writer’s creativity can be grafted. I want to mention just a couple of the archetypes I picked out, and briefly examine the creative flourish given to each.

It doesn’t take much watching of Hunter x Hunter to learn that Gon and Killua have “UNLIMITED POTENTIAL.” Teachers and more powerful characters repeatedly harp on the point that the two boys are exceptionally powerful for their ages and that they have no ceiling for potential growth. This is a very common archetype, and a very useful one for a writer.

However, if the two were just regular talents, well, they’d be long dead. How has this been dressed up in HxH.

His father is shown to be one of the most powerful individuals in the entire world, so Gon’s power, although growing greater against the enemies he faces, is taking minute steps towards equality (and meeting) with Ging. With Killua, the archetype has been disguised by his unusually high starting level of power.

This makes his growth seem more realistic. It also helps that Killua has never been pitted against a major boss, and so we haven’t really seen his true strength.

Kurapika’s revenge story, which is dealt with during the Phantom Troupe arc is another archetype that caught my attention. Although the purpose behind it was pretty normal (his tribe is slain, he wants to avenge them), the way his tale unfolds in the story has several interesting twists.

The troupe and its leader are still alive, still functioning, but Kurapika takes what seems to be a sort of time out from fighting them. I haven’t yet decided if his fury has abated, or if he is just biding his time.

The second surprise, for me, was when Kurapika actually killed Uvogin. In many stories like this, the hero does not kill their enemies, but works for a kind of reconciliation or change.

But that pales in comparison to the final wrinkle, which is Pakunoda. I was incredibly impressed by how sympathetic Pakunoda was by the time of her death.

I expected her to be released somehow, but she was not. I didn’t like it, and I didn’t expect it of Kurapika.

There was some definite tension between Kurapika’s rage and his internal boundaries. It was well-done, and atypical of the archetypal revenge plot.

If you’re a Hunter x Hunter fan, you’ve surely heard the news: The beloved manga series is, at long last, making a comeback. The latest manga chapter was released in November 2018 before the series went on yet another extended hiatus.

When an anime remakes its original series, often, it’s not an exact duplicate. From stylistic changes to the storyline, revamps of the original will either fall short or be better.

And that’s what the two versions of Hunter X Hunter do. One of the most noticeable differences between the ’99 Hunter X Hunter and the 2011 Hunter X Hunter is the events of the Hunter Exam.

There, the contestants search for treasure to pay for their rooms. In these few episodes, the audience learns a lot about the characters.

This part of the exam forces the contestants to work together more than ever before. While the Zevil Island portion of the Hunter Exam is only a few episodes long, it seemed to change the dynamic between characters completely.

Since this portion of the Hunter Exam was removed in the 2011 version, the audience is missing the character development. So when deaths and incidents happen later to those characters, it’s confusing why the audience should care so much.

Though physically he’s not present, there are plenty of flashbacks and notes to remind the audience that this was the reason Gon started his journey in the first place. Gon wants to meet his dad and try to understand why being a Hunter was so important to his father.

And as viewers meet more characters who know Ging, it only becomes more evident how important he is in the Hunter society. While Ging does make a few appearances in flashbacks during the ’99 version, his presence doesn’t seem to be as noticeable or as strong of a driving force for Gon like it does in the 2011 version.

From an early stage, the audience sees the type of relationship these two have. With Ging out of the picture, Kite seems to have stepped up as a father figure for Gon.

In the 2011 Hunter X Hunter, the audience doesn’t meet Kite until the end of the Greed Island arc. Therefore, his and Gon’s relationship seems very new and fresh.

While the 2011 version does seem to rush through some important moments, it’s because the series had characters and a storyline already established from two sources: the ’99 version and the manga. So when it comes to details, other characters received more attention because they would have larger roles later in the series.

In the 2011 version, because they had both the original and the manga to go from, small additions were made that impacted the characters. For example, Killua is an assassin-raised boy in both versions.

He has moments where the audience truly sees how being raised in his family impacted how he views others and values lives. But the main reason is boiled down to how he was raised.

On the other hand, the 2011 version knows that Killua, while he was raised to be an assassin, is also fighting the needle Illumi placed in his head. This needle impacted how he viewed his worth, viewed fights, and how he felt about his friendships.

At this point, all that fans have to go on as far as who to expect in the voice cast are the social media messages from Mariya Ise and Megumi Han. Funimation, thankfully, has translated these messages to give English-speaking fans an idea of what they might mean for the future of the series.

Hello, Enzo. I’m sorry if I’m beating a dead horse or it’s not relevant to the chapter, but what do you think the FLAWS of the Chimera Ant Arc are besides episode 94.

Both in the arc overall and specifically in Palace Invasion. Also, you’ve expressed in the past how you prefer the “simple and profound” aspect of anime storytelling, but Hunter x Hunter manages to perfectly hover in the “epic and profound” region.

I personally hope that this guy’s creative density breaks physical dimensions and creates a singularity, effectively creating a new technique of plotting from scratch by aligning weird and complicated patterns together. Like, an amalgamation of complicated little patterns effectively forming whole simple basic trends that have never surfaced this planet before.

Ah, I love it when storytelling becomes incomprehensible. Togashi makes it work.

I don’t think the Byzantine nature of Togashi’s arcs are a negative in and of themselves. The issue with Dark Continent, to me, lies in the fact that it’s ill-suited to erratic releases.

If Togashi were releasing chapters every week and you figured he’d finish this arc in 18 months or two years, that’d be a different matter. Yeah, you mentioned something about it not being perfect in your “Greatest Shounen Arc”, MAL piece.

Because that arc is structurally breathtaking. Everything is “spontaneous” but in insight a chess piece on the right side of the table at the right time.

Something that I found very fascinating this chapter is the unconscious nature of all of the princes’ new nen powers. None of them seem to realize that they are in use or even that they’re there at all.

That might be why the King seems so indifferent to Halkenburger “dropping out of” the succession contest. He’s confident that the new uncontrolled powers will drag the princes in regardless of what it is they think they want.

There’s so much going on here and I can’t wait to see what comes of it, regardless of how long it may take. I only re-read the last chapter before the new one and boy, that wasn’t enough.

I had to google Halkenberg after reading to really remember his role. I guess it’s something I’m just going to have get use to now that I’m reading it in as it comes.

I’m pretty intrigued about the prospects of Kurapika working with Pariston (or Beyond, but moreso Pariston) since Bill’s plan requires either of them. With Kurapika having taking over his spot in the Zodiacs, and the two having that little indirect tee-off with the Hunter Exam, I’m really looking forward to those two interacting.

I suspect a lot of H x H readers all over the world had that experience. So if anyone is having trouble remembering all the characters and such involved, this is helpful:

The line about “allies” was translated as such by Mangastream: Kurapika: “I’m fine with allies.” Izunabi: “You mean you’re fine with collecting pawns you can just sacrifice when convenient.”.

Kurapika: “By gathering allies, do you mean collecting pawns I can dispose of when convenient. ”.

The mistranslation (if I go by the Japanese script) makes it sound like Kurapika has gone to the dark side.”. My Japanese certainly isn’t strong enough to read raws, so it was the translation.

For me at least it doesn’t fundamentally change the way I view that scene. I still think, either version, that Izunavi is trying to caution Kurapika against becoming a lone wolf (which in fact is his natural instinct).

And Kurapika still basically views allies as disposable, which is a conflict for him where the boys are concerned. He’s come to know them and can’t think of them that way, and isn’t comfortable fitting kids into his idea of “allies” generally.

He’s ok having “allies” like Hisoka, that can provide intelligence if the circumstances are beneficial to both. Izunavi then misinterprets this detachment as selfishness.

In the mistranslation, Kurapika implies “an ally” to be a temporary construct, and in the actual line he says it’s impossible for an ally to be anything but, if the circumstances arrive. Because the concept of exposing true allies to his lonely & painful journey would require lack of care for their welfare, but Kurapika is too empathic for that.

The only collateral is Izunavi coming off as inconsiderate in the mistranslation. How exactly is Gon’s and Killua’s story unfinished.

Gon started the journey to find his dad, well he found him. Killua never had a goal to begin with he just followed Gon because he is the first friend he had.

Is it so bad that we now shift focus to Kurapika and Leorio.

Their friendship is the central relationship in the series, and it’s been broken by events in Chimera Ant. You can not like Gon & Killua and he happy the focus is on others, and that’s fine.

After the One Punch Man artist confirmed the legitimacy of the account, Togahi’s Twitter gained more than one million followers in a day. There’s a reason why people continue to hold out hope for Yoshihiro Togashi to eventually return and put the bow on the beloved series.

Oh, the places you’d go. HxH might start off as a stock-standard shonen protagonist story: Gon Freecs, a curious 11-year-old boy, aspires to be a titular Hunter.

Every place is fantastical, filled with expansive cities and exotic locales. Every person has their own goals, moving around the world to put them into effect.

While Gon is ostensibly the main character, the story is never shy about putting him on the sidelines, or when we need more context on the world’s happenings. Or simply because the other characters can be so fun to follow.

At first glance, several of Hunter x Hunter’s characters look like they could be from Saturday morning cartoons. Wide-eyed, innocent protagonists, facing off against a litany of ditzy villains with more colors on them than a Twister mat.

All of them are so distinctive that a silhouette is enough for the average viewer to identify a character. Nearly every character looks like a caricature, but dig just a little deeper, and the complexities fall over to reveal themselves.

) hide motivations that border on tragedy. Every person lives their own myriad web of relationships, expertly woven to meet or clash with each other when the stakes are at their highest.

Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. It’s a fundamental law of physics often ignored in anime, because the rule of cool is always in effect.

Nen’s rules tie each power to a linked hexagon. Six different power systems exist within it, which determine the type of effect a character’s unique powers can have or don’t have.

Knowing the boundaries and limitations of each character makes fights interesting. Watching two gods punch it out is the same thing as watching two peons slap fight, and flashy effects can only do so much to cover that up.

What matters is knowing when people choose to go all out — and the inevitable consequences that follow. It’s been almost four years.

Yoshihiro Togashi’s magnum opus has been on hiatus for so long, that even slow readers that consistently forget when chapters release (i.e. me) are caught up.

One of the best parts of following an ongoing series is the healthy discussion that ensues between each break. One example is JoJo’s Bizarre Adventures.

While both versions of the Hunter x Hunter anime are inspired takes on the beloved shōnen manga series, the 1999 adaptation reigns superior to the one from 2011 for a variety of reasons. Since there are two versions of the Hunter x Hunter series available, it’s not uncommon for fans to compare them.

These can extend even beyond their visual differences in style and animation, up to and including the inclusion of additional “filler” content. The two of them even tackle similar plot points differently.

The fight between Kurapika and Phantom Troupe member Uvogin is significant regardless of which adaptation it takes place in. However, the 1999 version puts a huge emphasis on how the fight affects Kurapika in the aftermath.

It’s true that he’s probably exhausted a lot of energy, but more than anything this battle and the subsequent killing has had a huge psychological impact on him. It’s not something he wanted to do.

He doesn’t address anyone in the room—he appears exhausted and gaunt and has even vomited on himself before returning—as he makes his way into his room. Shortly after, viewers see him sitting on the edge of a bed, hunched over and reciting a prayer for his clan.

This happens right as he’s starting to say the words “and carry the burden of their sorrows”, which continues to give viewers insight into how difficult this all is for him. Although both versions of the anime discuss Leorio past in unique and moving scenes, the 1999 version takes it one step further and gives additional context.

Because of this, viewers watch him struggle with scenes that manifest his past trauma, involving the illness-related death of a close friend from his childhood that he blames himself for. Leorio clearly grapples with a lot of guilt about the situation, and these scenes provide the additional devastating context and the full complexity of his feelings.

After his friends help him snap out of it, these moments help create an organic segue into Leorio revealing the truth about his motivations for becoming a Hunter to Kurapika, which brings them closer. Kurapika is also exposed to the same plant and ends up reliving the devastating events involving the massacre of the Kurta clan.

These difficult scenes simultaneously pull at viewers’ heartstrings and convey the gravity of these traumas on the lives of Kurapika and Leorio as they continue forward. Many might consider the style of the 2011 version of Hunter x Hunter’s animation to be better overall because time has allowed for advancements in technology.

Presently, because of its distinct style, this adaptation also invokes a powerful feeling of nostalgia for many fans. The 1999 version of Hunter x Hunter shows off many of the strong characteristics and the definite charm viewers see in a variety of anime series at the time.

The narrative of Hunter x Hunter definitely takes on some big tonal shifts depending on the stage of the series. There are certain arcs, and even moments within arcs, where the overall mood becomes something darker and more somber.

The art and animation style of the 1999 version allows for those fluctuating states to be seamless to its viewers. Brighter moments feel brighter and darker moments feel darker.

During the Zoldyck Family Arc, Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio are met with many obstacles, including a series of increasingly heavy gates. In both versions of the anime, they’re eventually able to open the gate after some extensive training.

Both Gon and Kurapika were able to push open one gate, which is equivalent to two tons or 4000 pounds. Leorio is revealed to be able to open two gates, which equals out to four tons.

Depending on the anime, and whoever is watching it, a slower-paced series is not for everyone. Some viewers appreciate being able to focus on only the main components of the narrative and some don’t mind the wait.

The 2011 version has 148 episodes and covers more of the story beyond where the previous one ended. There are likely a lot of factors that contribute to why the older version has the pacing that it does, but, regardless, said pacing allows viewers to spend more time in the world with these characters and reminds people that it’s okay to take your time.

Due to the inclusion of additional arcs throughout the Hunter exam in the 1999 version, viewers get to learn more about some of the side characters. With such a large cast of characters in the Hunter exam, it can be difficult for viewers to make any kind of connection with characters outside of the main four.

This might even help viewers discover that they appreciate characters that they initially wouldn’t have even thought about. There are some arcs in the 1999 version of Hunter x Hunter that are referred to as filler.

Take, for instance, the arc between the Trick Tower and Zevil Island sections of the Hunter Exam. Although this arc only lasts a couple of episodes, there is a lot for viewers to enjoy.

After their initial encounter in the older version, where Kite saves Gon from a mother foxbear after Gon finds himself in its territory, there are scenes of Gon and Kite spending time together. There are impactful scenes such as Gon’s vowing to raise the foxbear cub left behind by the mother’s unfortunate death and scenes that explore their conversations about Ging and Hunters in general.

There’s no denying that the main four characters have all developed strong friendships throughout the series. after all, those connections are one of the main themes central to Hunter x Hunter.

Gon and Killua are shown to have an especially meaningful connection, as are Leorio and Kurapika. Again, those connections exist in both versions of the anime, and viewers can catch a great many scenes in the 2011 version showcasing those relationships.

For instance, during the Abandoned Warship Arc, Kurapika and Leorio share a significant moment involving the burning of a Kurta clan ship in the setting sun. Toward the end of the Yorknew City Arc, Leorio playfully calls Kurapika’s phone when they’re in sight of each other and both seem lost in that cherished moment between them.

For this reason, both the 1999 and 2011 versions of Hunter x Hunter have plenty of viewers to speak to their success. It’s fascinating to note the differences and similarities that exist between two versions that are within roughly ten years of each other, to note what changes have been made, possible divergences, unique in.

In creating the protagonist of the Hunter × Hunter manga series, Yoshihiro Togashi initially thought that Gon’s characterization should be that of an ideal son who would easily become the series’ most popular character. However, the more he elaborated on the series’ story, his idea of Gon changed as he did not see Gon as a nice person as he originally envisioned.

Gon and Ging were meant to be similar characters with Gon often sharing a nervous feeling when developing in the story. This led to a major change in of the main character of the series and leave his scrapped nature to another unspecified member from the series.

Gon’s personality was kept addressed by Togashi during fight scenes where Togashi scrapped his sensitive side and give the manga a more entertaining side. Togashi feels glad with how he transformed Gon into the series’ protagonist due to the fact he could deal with his personality that much.

In dealing with Gon’s abilities, Togashi had the idea of having the cast’s abilities connect with their personalities such as Kurapika’s chains which are connected with his tragic backstory. Gon’s abilities were also connected with his abilities with his instinct.

However, similarities with Kazuki Takahashi’s Yu-Gi-Oh led to this being scrapped. Nevertheless, examples of fights using cards can be seen during the Greed Island story arc, where Gon and Killua often use cards.

Gon was first voiced by Rica Matsumoto in the 1998 Japanese film, and Junko Takeuchi in the 1999 series. Elinor Holt voices him in the 1999 series in English.

In Madhouse adaptation of the series, Gon is voiced by Megumi Han who found it as a unique experience when compared with other works most notably Sumire from Chihayafuru. Voice actress Erica Mendez originally read for Gon, Killua, Kurapika, and Menchi during casting of the series by Madhouse.

However, she still did not like how Gon often put himself in dangerous situations like a common hero and does not care for his own well-being. In voicing the character, Mendez adds raspyness to sound more believable to the audience, but because of the way they set him, he does not have a lot of rasp unless he is in a tense situation so sometimes he comes across as feminine, naïve and happy.

Gon Freecss is an athletic, naïve, and friendly boy. Having spent a lot of time in the woods as a child, he gets along very well with animals and has superhuman senses such as heightened sense of smell and sight, as well as very keen taste.

During the Hunter Exam Gon befriends Killua Zoldyck, Kurapika and Leorio Paradinight. After successfully becoming a licensed Hunter, Gon and Killua learn about Nen from Wing and later train and competes in a tournament test his new powers against his nemesis, the Hunter Hisoka.[ch.

60] Although Gon loses the match, he manages to return his debt to Hisoka. Both Gon and Killua return to the former’s homeland to greet Mito, who reveals to him a recording from Ging and becomes interested in trying his Greed Island video game.

After Kurapika quits his fight, Gon and Killua enter into Greed Island where they further train under Biscuit Krueger. Gon develops his Hatsu is called Ja Jan Ken (ジャジャン拳) a play on “Janken”, the Japanese word for rock-paper-scissors.[ch.

145, 193, 209]. After becoming one of the first people to beat Greed Island, Gon returns to the outside with Killua and meets Kite.

When the Chimera Neferpitou nearly attacks them, Killua knocks Gon down and escapes with him while Kite fights alone. Still believing in Kite’s safey, Gon continues training with a group of Hunters to face the Chimeras.

Enraged Gon confronts Neferpitou, but he finds it unfair that his enemy is instead healing a wounded human. This causes Gon to wait for the healing to end while throwing Killua guilt in his tanctrums.

305, 306, 324] After returning to normal thanks to Alluka Zoldyck’s ability, Gon has lost the ability to use Nen.[ch. 333, 334] Gon meets his father, Ging, who tries to confort him and learns that Kite is still alive through a Chimera.[ch.

Following the meeting with his father, Gon decides to return to Whale Island and reunites with Mito. However, he realizes that that ever since his encounter with the Chimera, his Nen has disappeared.[ch.

In 2023, an planned ending that takes place after a time skip, years into the future, featured Gon’s granddaughter, Gin. Togashi expressed a desire to create a satisfying enough conclusion so he would not have to resort to endings A, B, or C.

While acknowledging ending A as a “safe”, noncontroversial option, Togashi personally preferred ending C, despite expecting significant criticism from fans.

in Hunter × Hunter: Phantom Rouge (2013) Gon and Killua search for Pairo’s location to restore Kurapika’s missing eyes. Gon ends up meeting and befriending a young puppeteer called Retsu and when Killua reunites with him, they realize that Retsu is a girl.

When night falls, Leorio and Kurapika are approached by Hisoka while Gon and the others are attacked by Uvogin, who was presumed to be dead and saved by Nobunaga and Machi who defeat him. It is then revealed that Uvogin was revived as a puppet by Omokage, a former member of the Phantom Troupe who was defeated and replaced by Hisoka.

Gon has his own eyes stolen. Omokage sends the Pairo and Illumi dolls to attack the Hunters, but Gon and Kurapika defeat them with Leorio and Killua’s help and retrieve their eyes.

In Hunter × Hunter: The Last Mission, Gon and Killua take a break from their expeditions with Kite to pay another visit at Heaven’s Arena and cheer for their friend Zushi in the Battle Olympia Tournament with Wing and Biscuit.

Gon has also appeared in several video games based on the anime. He is also playable in the crossover game Jump Ultimate Stars, and Jump Force.

Gon Freecss is a popular character with fans, coming in third place in the series’ first two popularity polls. In a IGN article, Gon was listed as one of the best anime characters of all time with comments focused on how his characterization is marked by his absent father.

Initial critical response to Gon was positive with Charles Solomon, a writer for The New York Times and Los Angeles Times, praising the moral seriousness of Gon, a quality that gives the protagonist “an appeal his relentlessly upbeat counterparts lack”. On the other hand, DVD Talk said that Gon was one dimensional when compared to the rest of the protagonists as he does not have a deep reason to become a Hunter.
