A cheque, or check (American English. see spelling differences), is a document that orders a bank (or credit union) to pay a specific amount of money from a person’s account to the person in whose name the cheque has been issued.

The drawer writes various details including the monetary amount, date, and a payee on the cheque, and signs it, ordering their bank, known as the drawee, to pay the amount of money stated to the payee.

By the second half of the 20th century, as cheque processing became automated, billions of cheques were issued annually. these volumes peaked in or around the early 1990s.

In an increasing number of countries cheques have either become a marginal payment system or have been completely phased out.

Both the drawer and payee may be natural persons or legal entities. Cheques are order instruments, and are not in general payable simply to the bearer as bearer instruments are, but must be paid to the payee.

Cheques are a type of bill of exchange that were developed as a way to make payments without the need to carry large amounts of money. Paper money evolved from promissory notes, another form of negotiable instrument similar to cheques in that they were originally a written order to pay the given amount to whoever had it in their possession (the “bearer”).

Check is the original spelling in the English language. The newer spelling, cheque (from the French), is believed to have come into use around 1828, when the switch was made by James William Gilbart in his Practical Treatise on Banking.

In American English, the usual spelling for both is check.

Etymological dictionaries attribute the financial meaning of check to come from “a check against forgery”, with the use of “check” to mean “control” stemming from the check used in chess, a term which came into English through French, Latin, Arabic, and ultimately from the Persian word shah, or “king”.

The cheque had its origins in the ancient banking system, in which bankers would issue orders at the request of their customers, to pay money to identified payees. Such an order was referred to as a bill of exchange.

There is early evidence of using bill of exchange. In India, during the Maurya Empire (from 321 to 185 BC), a commercial instrument called the adesha was in use, which was an order on a banker desiring him to pay the money of the note to a third person.

These cashiers held the money for a fee. Competition drove cashiers to offer additional services including paying money to any person bearing a written order from a depositor to do so.

This concept went on to spread to England and elsewhere.

Cheques, a type of bill of exchange, then began to evolve. Initially, they were called drawn notes, because they enabled a customer to draw on the funds that he or she had in the account with a bank and required immediate payment.

In 1717, the Bank of England pioneered the first use of a pre-printed form. These forms were printed on “cheque paper” to prevent fraud, and customers had to attend in person and obtain a numbered form from the cashier.

The suppression of banknotes in eighteenth-century England further promoted the use of cheques.

Clerks of each bank visited all the other banks to exchange cheques while keeping a tally of balances between them until they settled with each other. Daily cheque clearing began around 1770 when the bank clerks met at the Five Bells, a tavern in Lombard Street in the City of London, to exchange all their cheques in one place and settle the balances in cash.

Provincial clearinghouses were established in major cities throughout the UK to facilitate the clearing of cheques on banks in the same town. Birmingham, Bradford, Bristol, Hull, Leeds, Leicester, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham, Sheffield, and Southampton all had their own clearinghouses.

In America, the Bank of New York began issuing cheques after its establishment by Alexander Hamilton in 1784. The oldest surviving example of a complete American chequebook from the 1790s was discovered by a family in New Jersey.

It is thought that the Commercial Bank of Scotland was the first bank to personalize its customers’ cheques, in 1811, by printing the name of the account holder vertically along the left-hand edge. In 1830 the Bank of England introduced books of 50, 100, and 200 forms and counterparts, bound or stitched.

In the late 19th century, several countries formalized laws regarding cheques. The UK passed the Bills of Exchange Act 1882, and India passed the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881.

In 1931, an attempt was made to simplify the international use of cheques by the Geneva Convention on the Unification of the Law Relating to Cheques. Many European and South American states, as well as Japan, joined the convention.

In 1959 a standard for machine-readable characters (MICR) was agreed upon and patented in the US for use with cheques. This opened the way for the first automated reader/sorting machines for clearing cheques.

Cheque volumes continued to grow. in the late 20th century, cheques were the most popular non-cash method for making payments, with billions of them processed each year.

In 1969 cheque guarantee cards were introduced in several countries, allowing a retailer to confirm that a cheque would be honored when used at a point of sale. The drawer would sign the cheque in front of the retailer, who would compare the signature to the signature on the card and then write the cheque-guarantee-card number on the back of the cheque.

From the mid-1990s, many countries enacted laws to allow for cheque truncation, in which a physical cheque is converted into electronic form for transmission to the paying bank or clearing-house. This eliminates the cumbersome physical presentation and saves time and processing costs.

Bank mergers and acquisitions are one of the reasons why a bank account and routing number might change. Consolidations are another reason.

Even so, if the bank where you hold your account is going through a merger or is being acquired by another bank, here are some things that you should keep in mind: Those who want to pay into your bank account will need to know your bank account number.

You’ll also need your routing number if you want to pay a bill online or make a wire transfer to another account. All bank accounts have a number.

Choosing the right bank [28]

Almost every dime that comes into your business flows through your business’s checking account (at least that’s what should happen). Whether it’s cash collected at your cash registers, payments received in the mail, cash used to fill the cash registers, petty cash accounts, payments sent out to pay business obligations, or any other cash need, this cash enters and exits your checking account.

Finding the right bank to help you set up your checking account and the controls that limit access to that account is crucial. When evaluating your banking options, ask yourself the following questions:

Does this bank operate at times when I need it most.

Most banks have secure drop boxes for cash so you can deposit receipts as quickly as possible at the end of the business day rather than secure the cash overnight yourself. Visit local bank branches yourself, and check out the type of business services each bank offers.

The type of personal attention you receive. What type of charges may be tacked on for this personal attention.

Some banks require business account holders to call a centralized line for assistance rather than depend on local branches. Some banks are even adding charges today if you use a teller rather than an ATM (automatic teller machine).

Many have charges that differ for business accounts, and most have charges on printing checks. If you’re planning to accept credit cards, compare the services offered for that as well.

For example, you need different checks depending upon whether you handwrite each check or print checks from your computerized accounting system. If you plan to write your checks, you’ll most likely use a business voucher check in a three-ring binder.

This arrangement provides the best control for manual checks because each check and voucher are numbered. When a check is written, the voucher should be filled out with details about the date, the check’s recipient, and the purpose of the check.

If you plan to print checks from your computerized accounting system, you’ll need to order checks that match that system’s programming. Each computer software program has a unique template for printing checks.

You can see there are actually three sections in a blank computerized check: the check in the middle with two relatively blank sections on either side. For one of the blank sections, you set up your computer accounting system to print out the detail you’d expect to find on a manual voucher — the date, name of the recipient, and purpose of the check.

In the other blank section, you print the information that the recipient needs. For example, if it’s a check to pay an outstanding invoice, you include all information the vendor needs to properly credit that invoice, such as the amount, the invoice number, and your account number.

Send the check and portion that includes detail needed by your vendor, employee, or other recipient to whoever you intend to pay. Initially, when the business is small, you can keep control of the outflow of money by signing each check.

Many small business owners set up check-signing procedures that allow one or two of their staff people to sign checks up to a designated amount, such as $5,000. Any checks above that designated amount require the owner’s or the signature of an employee and a second designated person, such as an officer of the company.

You also need to deposit money into that account, and you want to be sure your deposit slips contain all the needed detail as well as documentation to back up the deposit information. Most banks provide printed deposit slips with all the necessary detail to be sure the money is deposited in the appropriate account.

(If you don’t get that stamp from the bank, be sure to have one made as soon as possible.). Whoever opens your business mail should be instructed to use that “for deposit only” stamp immediately on the back of any check received in the mail.

If you get both personal and business checks sent to the same address, you need to set up some instructions for the person opening the mail regarding how to differentiate the types of checks and how each type of check should be handled to best protect your incoming cash, whether for business or personal purposes.

Customers or others sending checks to the business mail checks to a post office box number that goes directly to the bank, and a bank employee opens and deposits the checks right into the business’s account. You may think that making bank deposits is as easy as 1-2-3, but when it comes to business deposits and multiple checks, things get a bit more complicated.

Costco offers better security than Compuchecks.com. The major differences would be the prices, exclusive membership discounts, and the minimum order quantity of 500 checks.

Moreover, its check security features are commendable because they can prevent check fraud. Available quantities: 50, 250, 500, 1,000 and 2,000.

Intuit’s Secure Plus checks offer 23 security features, including heat sensitive ink, photocopy prevention, true watermark, and antitampering features. However, you can get better security features with Secure Premier checks, which has 29.

Intuit is a direct supplier of checks for QuickBooks since it owns QuickBooks. You can order your checks from within your QuickBooks Online account by clicking on the Settings cogwheel in the upper left corner of your screen and then selecting “Order Checks” under Tools.

If you value check security, we recommend Intuit. Available quantities: 50, 100, 150, 300, 450, and 600.

You can use a template with different variations of the design and personalize the check by adding the company name on top, changing the font, and modifying the background design. However, there’s no option where you can choose a higher level of check security features.

We recommend choosing Vistaprint if you don’t need high-security features in checks and have a diverse set of printing needs. Its checks focus more on customization but have a “lock icon” in the check.

We still recommend Intuit for added security features. Available quantities: 100, 250, 500, 1,000, 2,000, 3,000, and 5,000.

Check designs in Checksforless.com are detailed, but not as extensive as those by Vistaprint. You can choose different designs and template variations, and the checks have basic security features like a warning band, security pantographs, padlock icon, security screen, and heat-sensitive ink.

Though its security features aren’t as robust as Intuit or Costco, we think that the security of checks at Checksforless.com is already a bargain for the price you pay. Checksforless.com meets industry security standards for checks, with features like warning bands, padlock icons, and thermographic heat-sensitive images.

Every check has its purpose and use. Knowing which check to use can save you time and money since not all checks are priced the same.

They come with one check on top and two pay stubs below it. Using voucher checks is a great way to establish document trails.

Standard checks are printed three-to-a-page and are more economical than voucher checks. With standard checks, there are no attached vouchers.

Wallet checks—as the name suggests—are checks that fit perfectly in your wallet. They also print three-to-a-page and contain stubs on the left.
