How do Featured Snippets affect CTR? [6]

SEO is hard, y’all. It can take a while to start working, and then, once you get used to seeing double-digit growth in organic traffic year over year – suddenly you hit the dreaded plateau.

I remember the days where there were lots of spammy tricks you could use to get mediocre content to rank. (Not that I myself would ever create mediocre content.

No way.) That’s not so easy anymore – in part because Google’s algorithms have gotten a lot smarter, and in part because the competition is simply greater. There are more sites and businesses, but the first page of results hasn’t gotten bigger.

Recently, doing my SEO reporting, I’ve noticed a few cases where a page on our site has seen a dip in organic traffic. However, when I check to see if we’ve lost our ranking, we’re still on the first page, or even ranking at #1.

I suspected that changes to the Google SERP, such as the introduction of fancy new SERP features, were lowering our organic click-through rate (CTR), so I did a little digging to find out what exactly was going on. For this study, we looked at 24 keywords (from our own site) where we’ve maintained the same or very close to the same ranking for about two years (between May 2015 and April 2017) according to Search Console data.

Results were not filtered by device or country. I would characterize the majority of these keywords as informational.

More on what these keyword categories mean here. And thanks to my smarty-pants colleagues Meg Lister and Josh Brackett, who are approximately 9 million times better at Excel and statistics than me, for helping me analyze this data, and to our new designer Kate Lindsay for pretty-ing up the graphs.

CTR only went up for three keywords in the set (by 3%, 4%, and 37%). For all the others, CTR went down.

It’s important to note that I didn’t cherry-pick keywords to fit a narrative. These were the first 24 keywords I found where our ranking hadn’t changed significantly in two years.

Clicks only increased by 21% in the same time period. Bummer.

For these keywords there was an average position change of 0% and a median CTR change of -39%. That means even with the coveted Featured Snippet, organic CTR for a #1 ranking is lower in 2017 than it was in 2015.

For keywords without a featured snippet (6 of the 24), median CTR change was only -32%. This suggests that the featured snippet is actually associated with a decrease in CTR(.

This would make sense for simple question-type keywords that can be answered right on the SERP, like “how tall was Abraham Lincoln,” “when is the Super Bowl” etc. See also the recent kerfuffle over Celebrity Net Worth – a website that has taken a major hit due to Google’s Featured Snippets making it largely unnecessary to click through to discover what a celebrity is worth.

But most of the keywords I looked at weren’t simple questions, or phrased as questions at all. So there’s actually no reason to assume that people were looking for a quick answer.

they’re looking for multiple ideas or a complex strategy, not just a definition. Here’s the tricky part: Why is this happening.

It would be easy to assume that organic CTR has fallen because Google has increasingly moved to monetize the SERP – for example, just last year Google increased the number of top ads from three to four (while simultaneously removing the right-rail ads). Old enough to remember when there were ads there.

Two of the keywords triggered just one top ad, and one triggered no top ad but a panel of sponsored results on the right (on desktop). Incidentally, the keyword that now triggers four ads showed exactly the median drop in CTR (-32%).

Long story short, ads are definitely not the whole story here. There were a few cases where the keyword triggered a Featured Snippet but the Featured Snippet wasn’t ours (even though we had the #1 ranking).

In a different industry, we might have seen a lot more features in the results – images, videos, knowledge panel, local packs, card-style carousels at the top, etc. That wasn’t the case in this particular keyword set.

People do a Google search and then click nothing. Says Rand Fishkin:

I wouldn’t be surprised to find that over time, we get closer and closer to Google solving half of search queries without a click. In other words, Rand predicts that CTR will continue to fall even for #1 rankings as Google releases features that make clicking any result unnecessary.

I download reports from Search Console monthly, but not device reports, and at this point I can’t go back and get that data from 2015.). On mobile, organic CTR looks a little different than it does on desktop.

We’ve always suspected CTR on mobile is lower than on desktop, and now it’s confirmed. For mobile devices, 40.9% of Google searches result in an organic click, 2% in a paid click, and 57.1% in no click at all.

So well more than half of mobile searches don’t result in clicks. Here’s another source – according to Advanced Web Ranking, “ranking #1 in Google has a 23.5% mobile click-through rate, down from 28.6% in 2015.”.

None of these explanations (more and larger ads, other organic features, or shifts in mobile usage/behavior) fully explain the dip in organic CTR that we’re seeing, but it could be a combination of these changes along with other, smaller ranking factors.

The results may be very different for different industries. I can actually imagine the average CTR falling much more for industries that do less content marketing than we do, meaning more of their keywords are going to be commercial vs.

Wait, but what exactly is the Billboard Effect? [7]

I mean isn’t it.

But, it’s a phrase that summarizes my thoughts on tendencies in the industry.. Maybe this article should have been titled: Thoughts on the Billboard Effect.

In 2009, Cornell University published a study coining the term, and it’s been a central topic of discussion ever since. In a few words: The Cornell study in 2009 found that by listing on Expedia, a certain hotel chain saw between a 7.5% to 26% lift in reservations vs when they weren’t listed on Expedia.

The argument is that travelers see your property in more places (like real-life billboards), and that increases the total number of bookings across all your channels. It’s now interpreted to mean: The more OTAs you list on, the more total reservations you’ll get.

The explosion of new OTAs. The contagious recommendations from one hostel owner to another: Need more reservations.

Just list your hostel on more channels.

It’s easy to see how the Billboard Effect has gotten into hostel manager DNA. It’s pushed every hostel manager to list their hostel on as many channels as possible.

Listing on more channels has become so important, that hostel owners seek out Channel Managers with the largest number of connected OTAs. The thinking is that by listing on 150 channels (I haven’t seen this yet.

They will be on their way to reservation heaven in no time. Not so fast there cowboy.

You see, like with most things: Quality & Relevance is more important than Quantity. Let me explain.

And today, people see these billboards on Google’s search results, right. Think about it like this: When someone searches “hostels in [your city]”, they browse the first few links.

The key here is the first few links. Who actually gets to the second page of results on Google.

Remember: “The Best Place to Hide a Dead Body is Page Two of Google”. That applies to your listing (or billboards.

With today’s hyper-competitive world of appearing on Google’s first page (especially in travel. ), new OTAs can’t compete against the monster OTAs in main search volume.

If you’re in those niches (like beach hostels for surfing), then some OTAs may make sense for you. But generally, that means that when you list your hostel on that new OTA, when someone searches for “hostels in [your city]”, that listing is going to appear on page 50.

Nobody. Yikes.

By now, you should be able to tell if you’re already listed on some OTAs like this. The biggest clue is that you’ve been doing everything right (good photos, high property score, competitive pricing, etc.) and have received 1 or 2 reservations in the last 6 months.

The Billboard Effect, in this regard, is dead. Listing on more channels does not equal more reservations.

Listing on more channels can be a distraction. Be wary of the channels you decide to list on.

Let me explain. The thing is that the Billboard Effect may actually be useful if we focus on the first page of Google results.

Instead of thinking about “Listing on as many channels as possible”, think about being on as many quality & relevant channels as possible. Or on as many Google first page results as possible..

It’s more and more common for Facebook pages and Instagram accounts to appear in the top results. These social networks can rank extremely well on Google due to their domain authority (an SEO thing, but basically it means that because facebook.com/ is really important, it also brings up the search ranking of all its internal pages as well, like your Facebook Page).

The market is always in flux and you need to be able to adapt. Try them out and if they don’t work, get rid of them and close your account with them.

A few years ago, we noticed that a little over 90% of channel reservations came from only two OTAs. Only two OTAs.

So, what did we do. We went ahead and connected to those two important channels, and are working on making those connections even more powerful.

Let’s face it: Getting more reservations is a hard problem to solve. The first step to getting more reservations is acknowledging that fact.

Instead of only investing time and effort into listing and maintaining more and more OTAs, invest that same time and effort into your direct strategy. That doesn’t mean just having a Booking Engine available on your website.

Investing in your direct booking strategy means continuously working on new initiatives to bring visitors to your site and converting them to guests. This topic is huge and merits a separate book, so I won’t dive deeper than this.

Find out what 2-3 channels (max) work in your area. Get listed on them and make sure you have an incredible profile.

Build your website (with a Booking Engine of course), then create a Google Place, a Facebook page, and an Instagram account. Start reading into and thinking about different ways of improving your direct bookings.

It doesn’t solve your reservation problem. There are only a small handful of OTAs that will move the needle for your business.

The single-page application passed all unit, integration, and end-to-end tests. It was BEAUTIFUL.

Ever heard of it. No.

Me neither. Know why.

In other words, its developers didn’t know much about SPA SEO (Search Engine Optimization). Lucky for YOUR awesome SPA project, I know enough about single-page application SEO to make sure your project ranks on Google.

I don’t care if your edgy developer friend told you Googlebot executes JavaScript like a champ. I’ve read dozens of articles by researchers, developers, and industry insiders.

You should at least use prerendering or server-side rendering to make SPA content easier to discover, understand, and index for search engines. That’s the gist of it.

Some tried-and-tested simple practices will go a long way in boosting organic traffic. Before dominating the SERP (Search Engine Results Page) with your SPA, you’ll need to master these SEO basics:

Content quality requires expertise and research—if your client’s industry is alien to you, you can’t help here. But you can definitely help with content discoverability, i.e.

Here’s how: The following meta tags will help search engines better understand your content:

Viewport—enhances mobile user experience. Title tag.

Keep it < 70 characters. Differentiate it from competing titles on SERP.

Meta description. Include 1-2 main keywords.

Include a call-to-action to click on the page. Demonstrate you understand the searcher’s intent (i.e.

Social tags—increases social shareability of content. Define at least Open Graph tags (Facebook) and Twitter Cards.

Target keywords should appear in Title tag, URL, H1, and, with moderation, page content. Image titles and ALT tags should be descriptively named.

If you have an existing SPA, you can go to Google Search Console settings to see when your indexing crawler switched to mobile. It’ll evaluate both usability (font size, buttons spacing, responsivity) and performance.

However, be aware that your mileage may vary on mobile connections. A further section will address mobile performance for SPA.

Mobile SEO. Gone are the glory days of backlinks as the #1 SEO ranking factor.

It weighs user-centric factors more than ever. Website speed and user engagement signals are the two big ones here.

Online searchers are quick to abandon sites and carts. Google wants to please its users, and slow-loading pages aren’t pleasing at all.

Consider Googlebot’s impatience: the crawler typically won’t wait longer than 5 seconds for a script to execute. Miss that timeout, and you’ll risk content rendering and indexing issues.

Modern development practices for performant, SEO-friendly SPA abound—and they’re all described in a further section. Google now adapts to user-level signals.

Time on page, pages/session. Back-and-forth between results & SERP (frequency + speed).

Social signals. Freshness + popularity factors.

Google has become incredibly adept at tracking user engagement to ensure its users are getting the results they’re looking for the first time around. Further reading.

Single-page applications have a few drawbacks. They are, after all, full of JavaScript, AKA the infamous double-edged sword of web development.

Some users even disable JS in browsers. Accessibility, too, can be tricky.

I’ll assume you have pages that actually need to rank on Google. In other words, that some important parts of your SPA aren’t safely hidden behind a login.

Client-side rendering SEO is tricky. See, by default, a SPA serves an empty container to the browser.

In a SPA, it’s JavaScript that adds content to this browser container. More often than not, an AJAX call will request page content from the server:

The content is all there, thanks to our SPA. But Googlebot, as you may have started to suspect, sees the first version of our two examples.

A simplified heuristic here: → Synchronous content = crawled.

That crawler, while it requires the same URL you’re serving to users, is not a regular, browser-visiting user. You need to make sure it can access the content on pages you want to position on the SERP.

We’ve been hearing this since 2014. Still, all the best-ranked articles on JavaScript SEO (see what I did there) recommend NOT relying on Googlebot for JS crawling.

In today’s digital world, getting on to page 1 – and to the top of Google search – is not only important, but it can be the difference in your business thriving or merely surviving. My website was launched around three years ago, but up until May 2020, I focused on offering Social Media Management services.

I was good at it and was recognised nationally as a finalist in four categories at the NI Social Media Awards. But I didn’t enjoy it.

Managing a 24-hour, seven days a week, social media operation for dozens of clients is challenging. Imagine the number of notification pings I was getting every single day.

And you’ve all had that moment where a social media post goes “a bit viral” – that’s a phrase I’ve just made up on the spot.

But I mean when a post you’ve shared does a lot better than you expected. In your eyes, it’s gone “a bit viral”.

Your first thoughts are, “Aww no, did I make a mistake or cause some kind of controversy. ”.

We’ve all had a mini heart-attack when a post does better on social media than we expected.

As a result, during lockdown #1, I decided to focus on what I’m great at. writing.

I’m 34 now, and it took me all this time to figure out where my passions lay, even though it screamed out at me every day. Anyway, I’ve digressed, apologies.

And if it’s not, it should be. After doing a bit of research, these were the terms many business owners, marketing managers, and communications officers were searching for when looking for help with content writing for their websites and marketing material.

I wanted to rank on Google search for these three search queries.

And although my ambition was to get on the first page of Google locally, I managed to be the first result on the first page on Google for Northern Ireland Copywriter and NI Copywriter, and fourth result for Freelance NI Copywriter. Honestly, it’s been my most significant achievement in 2021 (four weeks in.

I’m buzzing like a second-hand radio. I can hear you mumbling, “You’re a bit dramatic there, Paul.

So, why am I delighted.

In the last nine months, I’ve crept on to Google’s first page of results and up to the top of the page.

By doing the following nine things consistently over the last year. But before we get into that, it’s helpful to know why getting on the first page of Google and getting to the top of the search results is essential.

For news, entertainment and education. And for odd queries that hit you at night like, “Why isn’t 11 pronounced as one-ty one.

Or, “What would a chair look like if your knees bent the other way. ”.

Or what about this one that my clients always ask me.

Nearly 22 million searches for that. Surely not.

21,900,000 results for that.

Thanks, Google, I am 6 foot 6. Globally, Google has around 90% of the search engine market.

Nine out of every ten people you know use Google every day. Even more mind-blowing, people use Google search over 60,000 times every second.

Around 1.6million people in Northern Ireland use Google search every single day.

So, if 90% of people in Northern Ireland use Google every day, that’s around 1.62 million people. Now, wouldn’t you like to reach every single one of them when they’re searching for a product or service you offer.

As a meme from a few years ago puts it, “The best place to hide a dead body is on page 2 of Google search results.”.

I’d bet only about 2% of the time.

The message is: If you do not appear on page 1 of Google, then you’re missing out on significant traffic, and ultimately, sales. So, without further ado, here are the nine things I did in the last nine months to rank at the top of page one on Google.

That algorithm is continuously updated and has the power to make or break a business. But despite all the algorithm tweaks over the last decade, one thing has remained: Google prioritises websites that are up to date.

Number one every single time. And Google favours it too.

Because things change, situations evolve. Accountant #2 has no information about the pandemic, Brexit, the Northern Ireland Protocol, the furlough scheme or all of the Covid-19 funding and grants.

I regularly update my blog, which helps Google’s robots find and rank my content.

It means a commitment to sharing content regularly on your blog/news page to reap the rewards. And it means writing content about issues that your ideal customer is probably talking about or worried about.

But imagine Accountant #1 created a helpful piece of content that went live between Christmas and the New Year when the dark clouds are hanging over all of us about completing those returns. A blog title could be, ‘7 Things You Can Claim For in Your Tax Returns’ or ‘5 Top Tips For Completing Your Tax Returns’.

The Tall Paul Marketing website has enjoyed over 22,000 page views in the last twelve months. And guess what they’re coming to read.

They’re reading my regularly updated blog and news content. And they’re not just reading it.

The knock-on effect of that is those nearly 22,000 now know about Tall Paul Marketing. It’s not uncommon for website visitors to read one of my blog posts and then click on ‘About’ or ‘Services’ – I’m now on their radar.

To sum up, every business owner, Marketing Manager, and Communications Officer should prioritise updating their blog or news page regularly. The take-home message: What Google wants, Google gets.

Updating your website isn’t just about publishing a blog article or news story once a week. It involves making tweaks too.

It wasn’t a “tear it down and start again” kind of thing. Instead, it involved adding new pages to my website.

How did I know what they wanted.

From student project to commercial game [11]

This article is available in: French. During Laval Virtual 2023, we met the team behind Hide The Corpse, a VR game created by students from French digital arts school Isart Digital.

You wake up in a hotel room you’ve never seen in your life and right in front of you is a dead body… Quick. The police are on their way.

No way they’ll believe you. Only one solution: hide the corpse.

Here is the trailer, followed by more information about the project. Developped for Meta Quest 2 using Unity, Hide the Corpse is available for free.

Hide the Corpse is first and foremost a ragdoll simulator. You will have to move the body and hide it, and the dead body reacts in a realistic manner, unlike most ragdolls in videogames.

Their goal was also to let the player feel how heavy a dead body can be, and that moving it is far from easy. They managed this with two tricks : haptic feedback thanks to the Quest 2 controllers, as well as visual feedback on each hand, showing the force/weight carried.

We had to carefully balance the force between our two hands and pull the body slowly across the room to avoid this.

Hide the Corpse caught the eye of Realcast, a studio developping VR/AR/MR games and experiences. Some members of the team joined the company, and a fully-fledged commercial game is on the way.

Of course, since the twelve former students were co-creators of the game, they all received a sum of money when Realcast acquired the rights.

In the meantime, you can still play Hide the Corpse for free on Meta Quest 2.

SEO for ecommerce addresses the initial barrier to acquiring new customers: driving traffic to your site. A few interesting facts:

When people search for products you sell, you want to rank as highly as possible to attract more visitors. Ecommerce SEO typically entails optimizing your headlines, product descriptions, meta data, internal link structure, and navigational structure for search engine optimization and user experience.

Each product you sell should have its own page optimized to attract visitors from search engines. However, you should not overlook static, non-product-focused pages on your website, such as the following:

Hot tip. For your specific DTC industry, let’s say beauty – study the website structure, site pages, page content, and keywords for which your competitors’ pages rank for.

If your website is absent from the SERPs, you lose access to qualified and interested customers. Your products may have an online presence, but are they discoverable.

This is where ecommerce SEO comes into play. It allows you to reach your target audience without paying for advertisements.

Yes, you can also acquire traffic through paid search, but SEO is much more cost-effective. In addition, ad blockers and ad blindness can reduce the effectiveness of paid search, so you should optimize for search anyway.

Implementing ecommerce SEO may seem like a daunting task, especially if your site sells a lot of products. Yes, it may take time, but you can accelerate the process with a sound plan:

Importantly perform research on a keyword before using it. Know how often people search for it (keyword search volume), how competitive it is in paid advertising (cost-per-click, or CPC), and what people are looking for when they use it.

Search volume indicates the level of consumer interest in a particular keyword. A high search volume indicates greater popularity, which means that the keyword will receive more active searches.

A high CPC indicates heightened levels of competition. Consider a long-tail alternative if the keyword you wish to target is extremely competitive.

Suppose a customer types “shower” and then presses Enter, are they seeking information regarding shower installation, shower repair, baby showers, wedding showers, or something else entirely. Add additional words to the search string if you cannot determine the user intent behind a given keyword.

Sprinkle latent semantic index (LSI) keywords throughout your product pages. These are related keywords that help Google understand your product page(s) in context.

To help paint a picture, take the words “frizzy” and “hair care”. When separated, these words represent two very independent definitions, but when brought together, their formation creates a brand-new concept: “frizzy hair care”.

If you have no idea where to begin with on-site SEO optimization, your competitors are your best source of information. Your bigger competitors have likely already optimized their sites, and you can discover many of their secrets by visiting their sites.

Specifically, you should analyze the keywords on their homepages and leading product pages. You can start by using the Moz browser extension to see the SEO title and description your competitors use in their title tags.

For instance, this is what the organic research on SEMrush displays for Stitchfix and their top 5 competitors: Do not limit your research to keywords alone.

The homepage is typically where the majority of SEO budget and effort is allocated. So, you should optimize your homepage for SEO effectively.

Homepage title tag. The SEO title tag is one of the most crucial components of on-site search engine optimization.

This title tag should contain fewer than 70 characters and be appealing to search visitors, as it will appear in search engine results. Home page meta description.

So, write it in a way that compels people to want to visit your website. Burrow has optimized both the title tag and meta description really well as is evident here:

The content on your homepage should provide visitors with clear and concise information about your brand and its products. Avoid overwhelming visitors with excessive content.

For instance, The Mountain has a simple navigation bar containing the primary product categories that encourage exploration. The hero slider features the most recent seasonal goods and promotions and encourages further exploration.

As you add more products and categories to your online store, keep in mind the importance of site architecture for SEO. You should have a distinct navigational hierarchy from your homepage to your product categories to the products listed within them.

The rule of thumb for search engines and visitors/customers is to ensure that everything is accessible within three clicks. There should be no more than three clicks required from the homepage to reach any product on your website:

Due to its lack of scalability, you are required to analyze and organize the items each time you add new categories or products. And the most significant flaw is that, in deep site architecture, the authority passed by your site’s homepage is weakened until it reaches the product pages.

In the case of Site B architecture, the required page (product page) can be accessed within three or fewer clicks. It not only improves the user experience, but also ensures that product pages receive the appropriate authority from the homepage and makes it simpler for search engines to categorize and index the pages.

Internal links serve two principal functions: Linking to related products or blog articles that are rich in information can improve ecommerce SEO and make your site more enticing for deeper exploration.

Product Detail Pages (PDPs) are the lifeblood of your business, so you will need to devote a substantial amount of effort to their SEO optimization. Please don’t just include a few lines of text and an image or video for each product.

Here are the specific objectives you wish to pursue: Include product name in description.

In most cases, it is also used in the page’s SEO title and URL. Consider including a common search term or keyword phrase in your product descriptions.

Thus, the keyword will also be included in the SEO title and URL: Additionally, when people share your product on Facebook or Pinterest, the keyword will be included in the shared post’s title.

Images are a crucial component of your PDP. Consider your customer’s perspective for a moment.

Images are not only important for your customers, but also for search engine optimization. To optimize your image files for search, begin with the filename.

Digital marketers have a complex job justifying ROI for SEO to clients or leadership teams. This is because the return is usually much harder to estimate than for paid marketing.

For this article, we will assume that you have some knowledge of ROI for SEO. So we’ll jump straight into the main focus of this article.

Yet, veterans of SEO have the advantage of keyword search volumes that provide insight into what people are interested in, information that is not available to new entrants. Understanding the impact of SEO is essential, especially for SEO managers hoping to convince leadership that the investment is worthwhile.

Yet, there is a proven way to calculate SEO by keyword, which can help. Most SEO operations begin with keyword research.

All you need is the keywords you want to target and their respective search volume data. Go to Tools and Settings, Planning, then Keyword Planner.

On the right of the screen, you can download keyword ideas as a csv or directly in Google Sheets.

Let’s say I want to do a campaign that targets the search term ‘healthy food delivery’ or ‘healthy meal delivery’. You want to compare the list of keyword search terms and estimated volume against what we are currently ranking for.

What you need to do is get 12 months of data for all keywords to get to that ROI for SEO. If you have access to a tool that allows you to see keywords in google analytics your list will be more realistic.

Armed with a list of relevant keywords note down the total volume for these keywords. Next, multiply the keyword volume by a realistic organic click-through rate for your industry and mobile/desktop.

From position 9 onwards, CTR falls below 2. By roughly predicting your potential traffic number (calculated below) you can multiply it by your average conversion rate for each product/ service type.

First, identify current device percentage use by mobile and desktop via Google Analytics. Get average desktop/ mobile search volumes from SEMrush or Ahrefs.

Find your average CTR for the top five positions on Google Search Console. You want to find out if you rank in the top five for a given set of search terms, and whether that presents an opportunity to invest resources.

Do this for desktop and mobile to use the relative CTR for each later on. Pull the top keywords for the last 12 months from GSC into Google Sheets.

Use averageif excel formula (=averageif) on CTR for all top 10 positions (averageif pos = 1, averageif pos =2, etc.). Average the top 5 position averages for a relative average, if you rank in the top 5 positions.

From Google Analytics get the device traffic divided by mobile vs desktop. You need these for the final equation.

Keyword data can be for existing rankings (current market share/ footprint). And/or for new terms you want to chase (gap footprint).

Data needed = search volume and current ranking position (if pulling for current footprint). For organic CTRs, it makes sense to use 39% for mobile and 65% for desktop (feel free to tailor this to your own site preferences).

This equation can be applied to every keyword you rank for, not in the top 5 (e.g. position 6-100).

You can then use this to compare against other metrics, like the difficulty to rank for a certain keyword.

By clustering, you get a better understanding of the topic opportunity and risk/ rewards. when looking at keyword difficulty and revenue opportunity.

Remember that Google Search Console provides keyword data for your site as a whole, and not for individual pages. Performance data from GSC is a measure of what’s happening on Google itself, and not necessarily what is happening on your site.

Hence, if you add hundreds of subdirectories to GSC, the increase in data precision can be valuable to draw the curtain on analytics not provided. Like any single source data point, it needs to be combined with others to verify its validity.

As of today, the world’s population has reached about 8 billion. And every single day, Google processes about 8.5 billion searches.

Search engine usage is therefore essential for us as users, searchers, and consumers. It is also essential for eCommerce companies looking to reach their audience and increase their brand’s visibility.

There’s a famous quote in the Search Engine Marketing Industry that goes: “The best place to hide a dead body is on page 2 of Google.”. This piece of fairly dark humor is, in a way, accurate.

I mean, how many of us scroll past page one. Statistically, 95% of searches do not go past page one.

So if an eCommerce company really wants to increase its revenue and become an industry-leading brand, it will need to appear on page 1 at some point. But how.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It’s a way of helping a website appear on page 1 on Google without paying for ads.

Until the early 2010’s, you could easily push any website to page 1 of Google if you knew your way around SEO.

It was a chaotic period in the SEO industry because companies were constantly jumping on and off of page one. From a customer perspective, it wasn’t an obvious situation either, due to the constant shuffling of websites on page 1.

In the past years, Google has made many algorithmic updates to make sure not just any website can be on page one. Today, once a website is in the top results on page 1, it becomes fairly difficult to just come and take its place.

Companies know that once they are positioned on page one, there’s a fair chance they’ll be there for many months and years. So let’s go through the 4 main points that influence the SEO performance of an eCommerce store.

As an eCommerce store, it is necessary to identify: Keyword volume & search intent are therefore essential.

For instance, let’s imagine you’re selling a liquid product that is very efficient for cleaning carpets. Would it be better to target users who search for “carpet cleaner” or “carpet shampoo”.

If you’re a service company that goes from place to place to clean carpets, the ideal keyword would be “carpet cleaner.” It refers to someone who cleans carpets. But what if you’re an eCommerce store selling a liquid formula that cleans carpets–or helps to clean them.

You’ll have a higher probability of generating transactions and revenue from this keyword. So a well-managed keyword strategy is the first element that will influence the SEO performance of an eCommerce store.

Once you define your keyword strategy and selection, use your keywords on the pages you want to promote. To illustrate how to do this, let’s take the example of a store selling “decorations”.

As a good SEO practice, they’ll want to include the keyword “Christmas lights” in their meta tags, URL slug, as well as on the actual page, in the header tag for instance. By doing so, they’ll not only:.

The third element that influences SEO performance is backlinks. A backlink is a link from another website to your website.

The more quality backlinks you have, the better your SEO performance will be. Good quality backlinks count as votes.

Last but not least, the fourth key element that influences SEO performance is User Experience. Google’s search engine algorithm analyzes how users interact with your website once they click on it in the search engine.

For example, page loading speeds, the time users spend on your website, the number of pages they visit, and so on. You can view these metrics in your Google Analytics dashboard.

The websites that perform the best, and offer the better UX, will generally do better in the search engines. In other words, there’s a clear correlation between good user experience, and good SEO performance.

This then enables Google to determine whether your site can indeed offer a positive experience to human users. If these robots encounter numerous issues such as page errors, broken links, slow loading pages, very thin pages (practically empty) or duplicate pages, there’s a fair chance your SEO performance will suffer.

“The best place to hide a dead body is page two of Google.”. You’ve probably seen this meme floating around the internet a while ago.

Is it because we find everything immediately. (lol) Because we don’t want to look any further.

And yet, the web is full of digital rabbit holes that underline unlimited opportunities and endless discoveries that will leave you in awe. That’s where Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) comes in handy.

But just because open source is free or publicly available doesn’t mean it is easy.

a universal tool for search in western countries. But, while everyone uses or has used it at some point, few know how to use it correctly, or at least efficiently.

You will, like most internet users, opt for one of these three solutions:. 1- A classic search such as “Last name + first name + email” and all its variants.

Relatively effective, but not necessarily speedy.

3- A smart search thanks to Google’s operators/commands and wise tricks. If you type the query below and the email you are looking for has been published online, you will find it.

However, you must know the trick.

Here are two articles to catch-up. This one here (the entire blog is actually worth the read) or this one, more for the mainstream public.

To track specific pages within a website, (or how to use Google to search any other site): site:reddit.com “social audio”.

site:facebook.com “image may contain dog”. To find similar sites:.

To target Google Docs on a particular subject (another one of my fav’ hobbies ) : site:docs.google.com “emerging trends.”.

This term, coined in 2002 by security researcher Johnny Long, refers to queries that aim to reveal security holes. Something key to take into account: there are thousands of open-source search engines.

On the “newsletter search engine” part alone, a good thirty are missing.

They must have methodological rigor, a strong analytical capacity, a form of creativity — the term “hacking” is often used to. And yes, if you search like everyone else, inevitably, you will find the same thing as everyone else.

Let’s illustrate my point. When I review pitch decks, I examine the competition/market slide thoroughly because I like to understand the specificities of each player.

It is then advisable to carry out your competition mapping using OSINT tools. Here, again, there are several ways of doing things:

That’s already good, but it won’t necessarily provide visibility for newcomers.

Long story short: I’ve never found a gem this way. Of course, there can be more quality results with sites like Product Hunt Betalist, Hype Urls, Launching Next, but this is not my first reflex.

I search for keywords related to the sector I’m interested in on Twitter / Instagram bios, thanks to tools like Followerwonk or Searchmybio. Why do I do this.

If I know the company’s website, I will type the URL as it is in the Twitter search engine or via its name. For two reasons: if it’s an emerging actor (my favorite subject, weak signals, trends..), I want to know who shared the link, to determine which profiles are interested in the subject, perhaps these people specialize in the subject and worth watching closely.

Second reason: Listing market players is recurrent on Twitter. Often, people will tweet lists, so if you find one, you often can easily identify several of them in this way.

Two important points: if you spot someone who has already published a map, chances are, they are a practitioner of the technique. It is probably worth adding them to a dedicated list on Twitter because they will probably start again.

Another example is Eric Peckham’s public media investor database on Airtable. These initiatives should increase thanks to the development of the creator economy and the trend of low-code/no-code tools that greatly facilitate the creation and updating of databases on certain sectors.

Another very personal way to find inspiration on Twitter: I type the query “who is building”.. which brings out interesting entrepreneurial personalities and start-ups.

As she explains in her Twitter bio, she is “obsessed with niche search engines, search tools and discovering new ways to find information online.” I asked her what her favorites are and why. She told me these three:.

It searches several social networking sites, dating sites and forums.

Pimeyes and Pictriev, which use facial recognition technology to find similar “faces.”. I then asked her what the most unusual niche search engines she encountered were.

Lumendatabase, a searchable database of legal complaints and requests for removal of online material.. a good legal resource, but quite hysterical.

For my part, I’m going to stick to the SOCMINT field, aka social media intelligence.

I’ve listed more than a dozen of them, which I haven’t explored enough yet to recommend any in particular. If the subject interests you, this video should give you some very relevant tips.

Buzzglobe allows you to search via all social networks. I have also created my own social media search engine: it’s not rocket science, you just have to build a custom search engine (CSE) in which you indicate all the sites you want to follow and that interest you.

I recently discovered StartupLynx, which allows you to identify similar start-ups around the world. I spoke with founder Karl Verger who explained to me that he has been working on this project for two years now (NB: StartupLynx has just opened a beta version with 100,000 companies, but should soon launch a new version with more than 400,000 companies.) His goal.

But sourcing so many companies is quite a challenge. qualifying them implies an AI engine trained on the users’ experiences and based on their feedback.

Facing competition like Product Hunt, StartupLynx is unique in that it can detect similar start-ups to determine the actors who have a similar idea. The service has been enriched with a presentation of companies through time, whether they are active or dead.

I grew up in Syracuse, New York which is known for two things: snow and Syracuse University sports. While most people are familiar with the longtime Syracuse basketball head coach, Jim Boeheim, but my favorite thing about Syracuse University is football.

Now, chances are likely that you don’t have as deep of pockets as Budweiser, Doritos, or Pepsi, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t take advantage of advertising around the Super Bowl with digital ads on a local level.

8 Stuffing A Body Into A Wood Chipper [20]

Whether it’s stuffing a body in a vat of acid or forcing a snitch to dig his own shallow grave, almost every movie with a body in it has its own way of getting rid of the corpse. Hollywood has expended more creativity into thinking up ways to hide a body than into writing a good script.

As part of our ongoing effort to see how much we can put into our Google search histories before the FBI breaks down our doors, we’ve investigated all the most iconic ways to dispose of a body and found out exactly what would happen if somebody tried these methods in real life.

Breaking Bad makes getting rid of a body look easy. According to Walter White, all you have to do is throw a body in a vat and fill it with hydrofluoric acid.

In reality, though, it doesn’t quite work out that well. As far as acids go, hydrofluoric acid is actually a weak acid and is especially ineffective at breaking down bodies.

That’s a lesson that some people have learned firsthand. When three killers in France tried Walter White’s approach, they quickly found out that all the acid really did was make their victim’s body stink to high heaven.

When the police found the victim, she’d been in a vat of acid for 10 days and her body was still intact. A team of German chemists wrote a paper on White’s theory and suggested that you could get better results with different chemicals.

Believe it or not, somebody’s tried acting out Weekend at Bernie’s in real life. The movie is an ‘80s comedy where two men take their dead boss’s body out for a weekend of partying.

They threw their friend in the back seat of their car, took his dead body barhopping through three separate venues, and closed off the night by blowing $400 of their dead friend’s money at a strip club. Unlike the movie, they didn’t actually drag their friend’s body into the club.

So it’s not entirely clear why they bothered dragging his corpse around at all. When the night was over, they called the cops to report that their friend was dead.

The paired ended up in jail on a pile of charges, including abusing a corpse.

The most memorable moment in Fargo has to be when Steve Buscemi’s killer is caught stuffing him into a wood chipper. Believe it or not, that wasn’t just a scene from the Coen brothers’ imaginations.

Wood chippers really are strong enough to pulverize human body parts, including bones, and Crafts’s plan actually worked out fairly well. He was able to get rid of enough evidence so that most of his wife’s body still hasn’t been found.

Even if they never found her whole body, crime scene investigators found fragments of hair, fingernails, teeth, and bones scattered around the crime scene. Blood had also soaked into the carpet and the furniture.

It wasn’t particularly subtle, either. His neighbors definitely noticed when he rolled in a massive wood chipper and started running it without bothering to gather any wood.

The Wild West classic is to hold your victim at gunpoint and make him dig his own grave. It’s a fine way to avoid a little backbreaking labor.

In some ways, this works better than you’d think. It would seem that most people, when armed with a shovel and staring their own death in the eye, would fight for their lives rather than dig.

In most real-life accounts, the victims appear to be resigned to their fates and dig. It takes an awful lot of time, though.

And that’s in ideal conditions. If the soil’s hard and the person digging has every reason to take his time doing it, digging a 1.8-meter (6 ft) grave could take days.

The best you’ll get is a shallow grave, and police are experts at finding them. They have “cadaver dogs” that are specially trained to sniff out buried bodies, and they know how to spot the subtle variations on the surface that give away where a grave is hiding.

Technically, the specialty of Psycho’s Norman Bates wasn’t getting rid of bodies. He just left his mother’s body right where it was, sitting in her house, and went on acting like she was still alive.

Timothy Fattig got away with it for the better part of a year. When Fattig’s mother died of natural causes, he was too distraught to call the police.

When friends and family asked where she was, Fattig would tell them that she was in the hospital. It worked for a surprisingly long time.

When the cop said he knew that she wasn’t in the hospital, Fattig broke down and told the truth.

Believe it or not, the real-life Norman Bates was allowed to return to society. Well, for a few years anyway.

As it turns out, a person who leaves his mother’s dead body in the house and pretends that she’s still alive tends not to be mentally stable.

The Mafia doesn’t really pour concrete on their victims’ feet and throw their bodies in the river despite what you’ve seen in the movies. For one thing, concrete takes hours to dry, so they’d have to get their victims to stay still for the better part of a day to pull it off.

Gangsters have tried this in real life—just not Italian ones. In 2016, Peter Martinez, a member of the “Crips” gang, was fitted with a pair of cement shoes and thrown into Brooklyn’s Sheepshead Bay.

Air bubbles in the concrete caused Martinez’s body to float back up nearly as soon as he was thrown in. The tidal flow then knocked him around and sent him washing up on the coast of Manhattan Beach, where a group of families trying to enjoy a nice day out with their kids found him drifting up to the shore.

In movies, the mob usually has a professional on hand just for this job. Men like The Wolf in Pulp Fiction are always just a dial away, ready to use their expertise to make the crime scene spotless.

We couldn’t find a single example of a person making a living by cleaning up crime scenes before the cops could find them. Scrubbing the scene of a death takes an average of 9–12 hours.

Crime scene cleaners often have to tear apart the whole interior of a room to get it back to normal.

Professionals have large machines and specially formulated chemicals for that purpose. However, even with their equipment, they aren’t always able to get rid of the stench of blood and guts.

For example, Phyllis Simmons spent several days trying to scrub her floors after she stabbed a man to death. When the cops caught her, there was still evidence left over at the crime scene.

According to the movie Snatch, there’s no better way to get rid of a body than to feed it to pigs. “They will go through bone like butter,” the character Brick Top says in the movie.

Theoretically, his idea should work. Pigs really will eat anything.

One group of pigs attacked, killed, and ate the farmer who owned them while he was giving them food.

It has to be a lactating sow, though. If you use other types of pigs, it can take weeks.

In most cases, the pigs have left gnawed-up bones or scattered body parts behind. Even serial killer Robert Pickton, who made feeding his victims to pigs part of his signature, had a wealth of evidence lying in pens, untouched by the pigs, when he was arrested.

One classic way to clean up a crime scene is to get rid of it altogether. In countless CSI episodes and horror films, people have disposed of bodies by just burning the people’s houses to the ground completely, taking all the evidence with them.
